Hmm, it's fine to me if this application is denied but I'm curious about why you denied this application. Is it because he is called General? Is it because he is some distant relative of a Shogun even though they don't know each other? Is it because of poor grammar like what the Cristo guy said? I want your remarks.

Would it be erroneous to assume that the shogunate has a policy similar to the Tokugawa's which bans the reading of Western literature?

For the most part no. However, if it has to do with warfare or strategy it's mostly fine.

Name: Hakuren (Japanese: 白蓮)
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Allegiance: Herself, nominally the Hongan-ji sect.
Physical appearance: See pic
Identifying Marks: None
Languages Spoken: Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, English, Sanskrit

Equipment: Naginata, Makarov PM, steel darts, combat knife, medical kit, prayer book.
Skills: First Aid, Charm, Musician, Dancer, Singer, Assassin
Personality: Compassionate, melodramatic, zealous, unhinged, empty
Weaknesses: Weak on defence. Generally can't fight too long in melee. May underestimate opponents.
Likes/dislikes:
  • Likes: Buddhists, good people, evangelizing, 'punishing' unbelievers
  • Dislikes: Unbelievers, evildoers, arbitrary behaviour, hypocrites, losing, people calling her by her ID number
Interests: Reading scripture, meditating, preaching, toying with others
Fears: People rejecting her, being a monster

Bio: Hakuren is a woman of many contradictions. Embodying the beauty and grace of a seasoned courtesan, Hakuren has the gifts to charm any weak-willed man. With dark silk hair and pale skin, she was a forbidden gem locked away in the halls of Ishiyama Hongan-ji, formerly Osaka Castle before the nuclear apocalypse. But those gifts were no accident, as was her transformation into a pious, dedicated nun. A woman devoid of any purpose she could claim to be her own, she still seeks answers for her existence, and mannerisms that border on the inhuman.

There is not a lot Hakuren knew of herself. A child from a military-run orphanage in Maizuru, Hakuren had had to live under the mind-numbing indoctrination of the Japanese communists. From a young age, she and her fellow girls was educated in all manners of intrigue, from music, to ballet, to silencing a man on bed. She generally felt bored of such lessons, and while she excelled in her skills, she disliked playing the little darling for party cadres visiting the orphanage. But her one true thrill was torture, impressing her ideas onto a victim in various creative means. She could sense something was wrong about her, and what excites her filled her with dread as well.

As a spy, Hakuren had had many names, all of which were meaningless aliases to hide her affiliation. Shogunate, Imperial and yakuza clans alike had arranged for hits on her, but none could identify the mysterious swallow sent to incite Marxist insurrection in their ranks. But Hakuren felt empty, the cheap thrill of ending a life worn off too quickly with the speed of the assassination. She wanted a purpose to call her own, something that could quell the savage within her. And Marxism provided no answers to it, a manifesto of gutter buzzwords with no promises of existential reward. But one mission soon gave her the answer. Sent to the Western Honganji temple in Kyoto to implicate the powerful priesthood, the woman with a thousand names was turned in an instant. Centuries of religious thought and art was able to move what decades of unchanging ideological dogma could not. It brought meaning to nothingness. It answered to the void in her heart. And most importantly, it had a response for the darkness inside, the sickness of relishing the pain of others.

She became Hakuren.

Her desertion from her post, unsurprisingly, was met with retaliation. As Hakuren devoted herself to the study of scripture and blade, her former comrades made regular examples of the clergy. Temples were razed, priests strung up on town squares, and hit squads constantly harass every refuge she took to. But Hakuren was unmoved, unfettered by the attempts on her life. What irritated her, however, was how little they cared for sacred relics and sites, and acted accordingly to safeguard them. This time, there was no one to rein her in. Before, her handlers would demand swift execution. Now, they got to experience how their maniac treats godlessness. The temple authorities, frightened of her behaviour, chose not to provoke her, and warlords who hear of her exploits eagerly pour alms on her feet. But Hakuren is a servant to no one. In search of an answer to the madness and lifelessness of her soul, she now devotes herself to the scriptures of Amida Buddha, and as some fear, her own bloodlust.

Additional Info: The warrior monks (Japanese: 僧兵, Sohei) of the new Japan are very much like the old. Escaping much of the nuclear exchange in their rural hideouts, the monasteries' rearmament were initially a response to the cruel realities of the post-apocalyptic world. Roaming bands of bandits routinely threaten the temples and nearby villages, and many took to salvaged arms to defend both their homes and the innocent under their protection. Steadily, the monasteries gained political and spiritual influence throughout most of Japan, maintaining an independent presence in the region alongside the various factions that had formed. Not surprisingly, relations with the communists were far less amicable than the rest, owing to their atheist stance and intolerance for theocratic 'warlords'.

But the monasteries were far from unified, and rival sects often competed for influence over the populous as much as the warlords did. Ambitious rulers often traded autonomy and tithes to a monastery in exchange for a few elite warriors and spiritual morale in their armies. The Empire commands the loyalty of several temples in Kyoto, all vying for favour from the Emperor. But the Shogunate is not far behind, with the Shogun and his vassals trying to win valuable support in Kansai. The Mitsuzaru yakuza care little for the affairs of the monasteries, though hefty donations are still paid for as a means to gaining popular approval. Only the USFJ and PRJ had sought to rein the monks in, the former trying to uphold its secular laws, and the latter often sacking temples outright out of ideological zeal.

  • Skilled Martial Artist
  • Stealth
  • Geisha (Music, dance, conversation)
  • Seduction
Personality: Confident and playful. Calm and composed under most circumstances, but hostile when upset or frustrated, especially when the lives of her sisters are at risk. Prone to mocking and taunting her opponents. Ruthless and somewhat sadistic too in that she is not above playing with her 'food' before delivering the decisive blow. Very sympathetic to the working poor, and increasingly resentful against the current PRJ leadership.
Weaknesses: Lightly armored. Has no firearms.
Likes: Communists. Fairness. Violence.
Dislikes: Capitalists. Monarchists. Religion. Greed. Corruption. Incompetence. Guns.
Interests: Reading Marx. Charity. Music. Kendo.
Fears: Death.

Bio: Tsuki has no recollection of her parents, nor her real name for that matter. Raised in Kyoto by her distant relatives, she was often abused and neglected for her distinct heritage, learning at an early age that her blue eyes were unnatural, the mark of a Gaijin (Japanese: 外人). Despite efforts to by the Empire to stamp out racial discrimination, other kids in her age group treated her little better, giving her the nickname Ainoko (Japanese: 間の子), meaning 'crossbreed' as an insult. The name stuck, and she spent much of her childhood depressed and ashamed of who she was, made even worse by her toxic environment which only further intensified the self hatred.

Everything came to a head when she ran away from home at age twelve with only a small pack of provisions and the clothes on her back. During the journey, she ran afoul with a band of bandits and was forced to spend a number of months as their captive as they wandered across the Kansai region. She was eventually freed when the bandits were ambushed by a PRJ patrol near far flung Tottori, practically an entire world away from her previous home. During the engagement, she suffered a head injury that resulted in some minor memory loss that forever deprived her of her birth parents and her real name. The memories that remained centered around the suffering she endured at the hands of her relatives and the other children because of her mixed race heritage.

By the time she awoke, she found herself beneath the sheets of a warm bed at Kawahara Castle during the twilight of the waning sun. There she met mistresses of the castle, a warrior sect of Communism, a sisterhood known as the Hannya. The following conversation is now a blur to her, no doubt because of her drowsiness at the time, but she distinctly remembered two things: The first being that the Hannya would raise her as one of their own from then onward. The next, in light of her memory loss, involving a rebirth under a new identity just as the dusk turned to starry night illuminated by the light of the full moon.

Thus, she was thence reborn under the new name Tsuki (Japanese: 月), after the moon.

It was only under the tutelage of the Hannya that Tsuki learned to truly come into her own. Despite starting at the late age of thirteen, at least seven years behind her peers, she jumped into her new lessons and training with zeal, becoming particularly enamored with the teachings of the Communist Manifesto and Karl Marx like a moth to a flame, with the principles of equality and community really appealing to her. Despite the accelerated training regimen, and the backbreaking work that came with it, she never once complained or relented, both for her own self-fulfillment and in fear of disappointing her newfound caretakers. Her efforts were rewarded when she caught up with the rest of her age group in less than two years.

Her positive environment also did wonders for her development. The neglect and mistreatment she suffered in Kyoto because of her heritage became a thing of the past as her new sisters easily integrated her within their social circles, with any disagreements stemming from genuine character flaws rather than genetic pedigree. Her caretakers were careful to instill in every girl the spirit of equality and fairness as Marx envisioned, lessons which Tsuki took to heart. These experiences eventually helped her overcome her past of self-hatred, and led her to become fully accepting of herself while also largely recovering from her hampered social skills thanks to constant social interactions with her new family.

Through intense training and indoctrination, Tsuki gained a new confidence as she developed formidable swordsmanship and espionage abilities alongside an almost religious fervor for Communist philosophy. As part of her initiation, her new skills were tested in the trial every aspirant had to go through, each uniquely tailored to each individual.

Hers was to return to Kyoto. To kill the distant relatives that mistreated her as a child and make it look like an accident. A rather unique coming of age that she enjoyed more than she should.

By the time she reached twenty one, she was well on her way into becoming a prodigal daughter of the Hannya as one of the school's most skilled warriors at her age, with various missions ranging from bandit suppression to assassinations well under her belt. She was less fond of the latter however, finding the seduction tactics involved in covert missions as particularly demeaning, enjoying only the musical aspect in the undercover work. She much preferred the rush of battle and open combat where she could make use of her sword skills.

Tsuki is utterly devoted to the Hannya and the Communist ideology. With the Hannya, she discovered the true meaning of love and family that she always craved, while Communism taught her equality and fairness that she was deprived from as a child. By definition, this loyalty should also technically extend to the People's Republic due to the Hannya's affiliation with the faction, and while she is indeed loyal to the citizens, she is personally discontent with the government, the JCP in particular, due to their passive approach in spreading Communism and their inaction (and culpability) in addressing the famine and corruption that has left the working class suffering.

She now tries to do right by her sisters and adhere to the tenets of Communism to the best of her ability. She has recently joined the campaign against the Sohei, hoping to find fulfillment in her work in the post-apocalyptic hellscape left behind by the bombs.

Additional Info: Named after the envious demonesses of Japanese folklore, the Hannya (Japanese: 般) are a sisterhood of mercenaries and assassins closely affiliated with the PRJ. Their history is tied closely to the military-run orphanage based in Kawahara Castle (Japanese: 河原城) in the edge of Communist territory in Tottori, where young girls were indoctrinated in Marxist thought and trained as warriors and assassins during the burgeoning stages of the Japanese Communist Party in Kansai, shortly after the death of the Original Generation. Early disagreements in doctrine led to a mutiny, in which zealous students turned on their former handlers, establishing the Hannya as an independent school of martial arts and assassination in the process, largely considered to be a fringe and extreme element of Japanese Communism.

Despite their origins however, the Hannya have historically enjoyed close ties with the PRJ, largely being known as protectors and unofficial crack troops for the fledgling People's Republic at a time when bandits and other warlords threatened its existence. The nature of their work has placed less and less emphasis on assassination over time, turning the group more into a school of mercenaries by 2183.

A generation later, the Hannya still operate in Kawahara Castle, largely tolerated by the PRJ as semi-autonomous vassal state, if not elite warriors in its army. While not officially sanctioned by the JCP as a whole due the sisterhood's aggressive ideological leanings, their services have become vital to various politicians and figureheads in the PRJ and elsewhere, operating under indefinite contract through underground channels as an unofficial paramilitary arm of Communist thought in Japan, clamping down on any internal and external threats to the PRJ that can't be handled by normal means. In return, the Hannya have been granted nominal authority over the military-controlled orphanages in Tottori, ensuring that the school is never short on fresh recruits at any given time.

Outside of official jobs, the Hannya are also known to escort and ferry travelers towards various cities across Eastern Tottori and Northern Hyogo, providing protection from bandits and other dangers in the more vulnerable and less developed roadways. Their influence, while considerable, is mostly limited Tottori proper however, where they have become minor folk heroes in the eyes of the working poor in light of the group's protection services and charity work.

To its enemies however, the Hannya remain ruthless killers and zealous ideologues, with each woman easily identified by a featureless Noh mask and distinct robes draped in Communist red. They have been recently waging a campaign to wipe the Sohei from areas under the control of the People's Republic, often sacking Buddhist temples and melting down sacred artifacts as part of their efforts.

Funny, I have a fanfic idea of setting up Madoka and co. in the Gryps Conflict, but they're AEUG, not Axis Zeon. Her opponents, though, are Titans, and from a franchise much closer to Gundam than an actual Magical Girl show. :p
