History of the House since 282 AC Following the peace at Riverrun, Rhaegar returns to the capital to oversee the deposition of his father and predecessor, Aerys II, the Mad King. A few exciting hijinks ensued as Rhaegar and the other lords hunted down and executed Aerys' pyromancers, who remained faithful to the Mad King's schemes to wreak havoc and destruction throughout the city. The caches of wildfire posed a problem to Rhaegar; he could recognize, intellectually, the power they had as a weapon, but he felt a deep emotional revulsion at the thought of leaving the wildfire caches where they were. His solution, like most of his reign, was a compromise: some of the deposits would be excavated and carefully extracted from their tunnels and caverns and basements beneath the Red Keep and carried onto ships, packed in sand, to be sent to the deep caves beneath the ancestral Targaryen home of Dragonstone. Other deposits, ones that were in more populated areas, or too deep underground to be safely removed, were instead filled with sand. Thousands of pounds of sand, dirt, and manure were brought into King's Landing and used to completely encase the caches. In this way, Rhaegar hoped, the danger of the wildfire would be minimized, and their presence forgotten.

Along with the wildfire, the Royal Fleet carried the Mad King to Dragonstone. Kept docile by constant heavy doses of milk of the poppy forced down his throat by several sers under the supervison of Grand Maester Pycelle, Aerys was hauled deep inside the walls of Dragonstone, there never to return. Visits to see the Mad King are carefully noted by gaolers paid by the Iron Throne, and few - if any - Aerys loyalists are allowed onto Dragonstone. Aerys is also kept under sedation most of the time by a maester of Oldtown, the better to manage Aerys' constant hallucinations and ravings, as well as to keep the former king quiescent and docile. Ravens from the island, however, have indicated a steady decline in the Mad King's health, and it seems that Aerys will soon shuffle off of this mortal coil.

With the threat of Aerys and his wildfire dealt with - following the execution of various pyromancers for crimes against the North and the Realm - Rhaegar turned to healing the deep divides in the Realm. Meeting with envoys from the Iron Bank, and drawing on the overflowing treasury left by his father, Rhaegar spent lavishly - but prudently! - to repair the damage of the Usurper's Rebellion. The territories of the rebels were mostly left untouched, with a few noticeable exceptions - the Darrys, the Freys, the Conningtons, among others - and so Rhaegar had little other than coin with which to appease his supporters. Traveling frequently with his retinue of loyal lords and sers, he broke bread with dozens of lords, rebel and supporter alike, in an effort to hear their grievances and convince them that he was no Mad King, that they need not fear him or his rule. His Small Council, dominated by the Tyrells and the Lannisters, did much the same over the course of 13 long years.

A decade and a half...Rhaegar's rule was fair, just, and above all else, peaceful. This is not to say that he did not face his challenges, both personal and political: his marriage with Elia Martell was a sham; his Small Council was fraught with tension between rival factions; his subjects, the Greyjoys, rebelled violently. Yet, despite all these challenges, Rhaegar proved to be very much a good king, a blessing after the turbulent rule of Aerys. The Greyjoys were violently smashed by a coalition of the Reach, Westerlands, and Riverlands, with Rhaegar casting the Greyjoys down and raising House Harlaw in their place. The Ironborn were broken, their wealth taken, their ships burned, their lords scattered as wards to the great houses of Westeros. A Grand Tourney was announced in Lannisport following the successful campaign, and Rhaegar held court there for several weeks before embarking on yet another tour of his realm. Yet, for all his tours, he never once set foot in Dorne, out of fear of the anger of Elia's family and House. He did not fear a Dornish rebellion - Prince Doran was far too sensible for that - but he feared the animosity of his wife's brother, the Red Viper, and above all else, he feared the awkwardness, the barely suppressed anger of the Dornish nobles.

You see, Rhaegar had been able to heal some of the wounds and divides in the Realm with the help of his Small Council, but he had never managed to heal the divide he inflicted within his own family, and with the Iron Throne and Dorne. Elia could have forgiven Rhaegar for his indiscretion with Lyanna - this was not abnormal for the Dornish after all! - but she could never forgive Rhaegar for legitimizing the bastard son Lyanna bore him, placing the son of a paramour on an equal level with her own Aegon, and above her daughter, Rhaenys. Rhaegar attempted to reconcile with Doran, showering him with titles, praise, coin, and honors, just as he attempted to reconcile with Elia herself. Yet in both cases, he proved unsuccessful; Doran remained civil, although icily so, while Elia flung his gifts back into his face, accusing him of trying to buy her as if she were a cheap whore.

For now, Rhaegar's family remains divided; Aegon, Rhaegar's son, is the Prince that was Promised in Rhaegar's eyes, and has faced an immense amount of pressure to hold to the ideals that Rhaegar enforces on him. He has been taken along every tour with Rhaegar, forced to train from a young age with the sers in the courtyard, the maesters in their libraries, and the septons in their septs. Rhaegar constantly ordered Aegon about, forcing him to spend time with the merchants in the harbor, the goldcloaks patrolling King's Landing, and the farmers in the field -- in this way, Rhaegar believed, Aegon could learn about his people, and truly become TPTWP.

Rhaegar has not necessarily been neglecting the other members of Hosue Targaryen, but they certainly do not command as much of the King's attention as the Realm, nor the Prince that was Promised. Viserys has been half-heartedly set along the same path as Aegon, but always without his father's omnipresence, allowing him to slip away from his duties and responsibilities in a way that Aegon cannot. Similarly, Daenerys and Rhaenys Targaryen, Rhaegar's sister and daughter respectively, have largely been left to fend for themselves in courtly intrigue, falling loosely under the wing of Elia Martell, who - despite her acrimonious marriage to Rhaegar, bears no ill will to her daughter or sister-in-law. Recently, however, Rhaegar has embarked on another usual tour of the Seven Kingdoms, stopping at Riverrun, the Eyrie, and Winterfell before heading to the Wall to see his pet project, the Night's Watch, and observe the Wall for himself. With him rode Viserys and Aegon, along with a great retinue of hedge knights and landless sers sworn to the King, while Daenerys, Rhaenys, and Elia remained behind in King's Landing to oversee the court. While Rhaegar took the most favored prophets and mystics and septons with him on his journey, a great multitude remained behind to irk Tywin Lannister and the other members of the Small Council, and a veritable army of ravens follows the King's caravan wherever he goes.

I did make her look more Targaryen than Martin implies in his blog post, mostly because I want to write a conflict between who she is as a Targaryen and the appearance of one, despite being raised almost solely by her mother, Elia, and accompanying her on long trips to Dorne -- a contrast to Daenerys, who looks and embraces being Targaryen. I'm helped by the fact that Rhaenys was only 3 when she died, Aerys II was quite literally insane, and GRRM's last word on this was a half sentence nearly two decades ago....

I was just wondering why the lord in your WIP app was named Aenar as opposed to Lucerys or Monford, since I think one or both of them should be alive in this alternate timeline
