Character Biography: Erland was born of the union between Lothar vas Drechsler, Grand Count of Palan's Landing, and Catherine Belmore, an Anglarikan noblewoman. As is often the case, this was an arranged marriage, many of which are not happy unions. One could say this was such a case.

It certainly began happily; Catherine was with child and gave birth to Erland all within two years of the marriage. But Lothar's behavior began to take a turn for the worse. Whether through excess drink, creeping madness, or both, Lothar gradually morphed into a violent and erratic man who often physically beat his wife and son. Such was the extremity of his behavior that life for Catherine and Erland was a living hell whenever he was around; they often made plans or invented excuses to be elsewhere whenever possible.

Erland was not bereft of friends: he had many in the castle and city of Palan's Landing. He received all the education and training required of a high-born son. But Lothar was of course the final authority, and soon his own father was making life unbearable. The last straw was when Lothar's violent beating of his mother turned into brutal rapes. When Erland was twelve, Catherine spirited herself and her son away to the Great Vale and the safety of Anglarika. Thereafter he was raised amongst the Belmores; his mother's family.

He grew tall and stout over the remaining years of his childhood, and learned to use a bow as skillfully as one might play a deadly harp. Erland got on well with his half-brothers and sisters, but as he was not of the main Belmore line, there were few prospects of becoming a landed noble. Thus, when he was nineteen, Erland set off to make his fortune in the wider world. He spent the next decade adventuring, first in the northwest and then in Engar, before venturing as far east as the Kurdan Mountains.

Erland pledged his bow to a number of lords during this time. He spent two years in the service of the city of Thorn, fighting Volyoria and Eranc alike. Three years passed in the Paletine legions, where Erland fought against the desert-dwelling Anotans. Over the years he has fought many a battle, some lost, most won, and has gained experience beyond his thirty-six years.

But at some point, it was time to return home. When he finally did return to the Great Vale, his mother was ill and fading fast. Before she died, Catherine Belmore made her son promise that he would take vengeance on Lothar vas Drechsler, that he would punish his father for a childhood of abuse. Erland never spoke the words before she passed. But now, two years later, he finds himself at the gates of Palan's Landing, with an axe to grind against one of the Empire's most powerful nobles. Only one friend stands beside him . . .

The Belmores, meanwhile, are the kin of Erland's mother, an Anglarikan house of the middle gentry of that kingdom. They have sizable estates on the northern edge of the Vale.

Character Dynastic History (History of your family): The vas Drechslers were mere barons for centuries after the landing, but gradually built up their power base after the founding of Alfheimr. A series of well-placed marriages and some admittedly suspicious deaths allowed them to inherit the glorious city of Palan's Landing in 547, which they have held ever since.

The history of the Belmores is less prestigious. They were simple landed knights for as far back as records go. It was not until the 600's that they gained any prominence, with the rise of well-known Anglarikan knights like Stephen 'the Red' Belmore and Cartyr 'Swordsong' Belmore, both of whom did much to advance their house until it was one of the major landholders of the Great Vale.

From the beginning, like his father and grandfather before him, Severian and his brothers were destined for the Paletine military. Severian enlisted at age nineteen and was soon thrust into action against the constant threat of Anotan incursions. He proved himself an able soldier but never rose past the rank of junior officer.

Fate did not bring Severian and Erland together until 770, when their two units (Severian's scouts and Erland's auxiliaries) ran into one another in the Kalerthei Forest, where they dug in and gave battle to pursuing Anotans, who outnumbered them 2 to 1. In the ensuing combat, which lasted much of the day, Severian was dealt a near-mortal wound. Erland not only stood over and defended his comrade, but later bandaged him during a lull in the fighting. Severian was taken aback and deeply moved by the lengths that a foreign auxiliary would go to help him. Thereafter, they were inseparable.

Severian's brother Bardas was by this time a more prominent commander than he, and the family fortunes were safely invested in the more visible and more politically savvy older brother. Severian figured that he might never make a name for himself in a Paletine army overcrowded with ambitious officers. When his six-year service expired, Severian tagged along with Erland during the latter's more recent adventures. Now he has decided to help his friend take vengeance on a brutal father, and cause a bit of a stir in Palan's Landing.
