Chapter One: Taking It Easy
Location: Ceres Space Docks
Part of the wealth of Ceres came from the vast array of pylons, girders and struts that extended out from the surface of the spherical planetoid many kilometres into space. These constructs were in a constant flux of building, repairing and restocking the hundreds of craft that passed through every month. Incoming vessels loaded with materials, fuels and components docked, either off-loading their raw goods for processing, or simply just stopping off on their way further in or out of the system. As well as the tangle of space docks and ship yards was the inevitable constructs catering to a ship's more organic component; its crew. Giant ring-like structures, rotating slowly and providing everything a credit-laden spacer required, they were just as vital to the economy of Ceres as the ships and cargo they brought. The larger cargo freighters and military vessels generally heaved to a few kilos off and used transfer shuttles to bring people over, but smaller craft had the benefit of docking directly and using some of the station's own rotational movement to provide gravity on-board, typically one-quarter Earth’s gravity.
The view from the board room looked out over one such craft; the SS Saxifrage, a stubby cylinder with long fuel tanks and the distinctive cone of a drive exhaust jutting out from the back. A few drones circled around the ship, identifying micro-meteorite damage and repairing the tiny holes in the whipple shield, whilst tubes and pipes affixed the vessel to the berth beside it. Within the room was a large table, big enough for over a dozen people to be seated, and a selection of pictures and schematics of the Saxifrage, putting it in more detail. Two people were already in the room; seated at the table with a tablet in his hand was an Asiatic man, dark hair pulled up into a top-knot and vivid make-up around his eyes. He was dressed in up-market Belter gear, complete with the fashionable ‘fold away emergency vacuum suit’ that was currently vogue, despite its near-uselessness. Standing by the window looking out at the view, was a woman, olive-skinned but still Asian in appearance. Her clothing was far more functional; a dark grey flight suit with the harness still attached on her back. Black hair cut short and devoid of any other embellishments, arms folded across her chest.
The man spoke first, gesturing to the seats. “Why don’t you sit down and get comfortable? You’re going to put people off standing over there. She isn’t going to vanish as soon as you turn your back, don’t worry.”
“Hrmph,” the woman snorted. “I don’t trust your ‘friends’ as far as I can shove them out an airlock, why you couldn’t sign us up with a regular maintenance crew I’ve no idea.”
“Ah, but my girl..”
“Do not ever call me ‘my girl’.” The woman interrupted, “I’m not your girl, if anything, you’re my man, or bitch, or lapdog. How shall we call it? I’m Captain Kone, or Ember if you must insist on being informal.”
The man looked distinctly uncomfortable. “There’s no need to be rude. We’re all professionals here.” Ignoring Ember’s muffled snort, he continued. “I told you before, these guys are cheaper, and until you get some jobs under your belt, we need to save money.”
“Don’t worry, the money will be rolling in soon,” Ember replied. “I’ve high hopes for these guys. Not your usual crowd of Belter degenerates looking to get to Earth. Most of them look like they're avoiding it.” She moved around to the table and sat where she could still see outside, glancing between the doorway and the window.
OOC
Here we go. Post arriving, give a character description and we'll go from here. I'd appreciate putting your character's name in a header of the post, so then I know who's who. If you're going to put images in, do so in a spoiler box, that way the thread doesn't fill up with pages of images. Put OOC comments in a box, particularly if you want to perform an action that affects other characters (including NPCs). Any questions, queries, comments or complaints, TG me!
