Desperately trying not to be Big Damn Heroes

The rock had drifted on its own for a long time, slowly tumbling on a course that appeared random, but had been carefully planned. Up until now, its only companion had been the barely visible pinprick of light that was Ceres, holding the smaller asteroid in tenuous orbit. Not more than 200 meters to a side, the fragment of carbonaceous material looked almost entirely normal aside from the small docking port and airlock in one side betraying its artificial origins.

Light shone out, illuminating the asteroid in a broad beam that swept across the rocky surface before focusing in on the man-made anomaly.

“Jackpot.”

A small spacecraft approached the asteroid, looking like a short cylinder with two long robotic arms. Plumes of blue fire sparked from manoeuvring thrusters as it positioned itself near the docking port and the arms reached out to clamp themselves to the appropriate hard points. With the two objects now linked, there was a few minutes pause before a hatch opened in the side of the ship and two suited figures emerged. They made way to the asteroid’s incongruous airlock fixing their magnetic boot soles to the small ledge outside it. Another pause followed as one of the figures used a handheld device to hack the code and open up the 2 meter round doorway, revealing a cuboid room about 4 meters to a side.

“See, it’s all working out. It was right where I said it would be, there’s still some residual power and the codes are working.” One of the figures said over the radio.

“I’ll admit, I was sceptical,” the second figure replied. “Let’s hope the rest of it is as good as you think.”

The first figure entered the airlock and pressed a few buttons on a panel there. “Seems like there’s still air inside,” it said. “But we should keep our suits on; going to be a bit stale after all this time.”

The second figure followed and the airlock cycled closed, opening up into the interior; an enclosed corridor, about ten meters in length, to what seemed like another airlock door. Everything was dark, the only light from the lamps of the two suits. Making their way with the peculiar lurching motion of magnetic boots, they soon reached the other door and the process that opened the first door was repeated revealing the interior of another airlock.

“See, I told you,” the first figure said. “It’s just sitting here, waiting. It’s been in dry-dock all these years. Pressurised, and the reactor in low power mode.” A few more buttons were pressed. “Wouldn’t have lasted much longer though, few more years and the tank would be dry.”

“I’ll reserve judgement until we’ve checked all the readouts,” the second one replied, entering into the airlock. “But if anything, you’ve found us some good salvage.”

The airlock led on to the interior of what was evidently the deck of a spacecraft, arranged in the classic upright way, with the reactor and drive at the bottom. A long ladder well, difficult to descend with a full suit on, led to an engineering level and the detailed information that made the trip worthwhile.

“Shifted the reactor into full power, air system is working again, although the bioreactors will need replacing; the algae all died a long time ago. Air supply is good for a few days though, give us time to get it fixed.” A few more screens were pulled up and consulted. “All looks good, how do you plan on getting it out of this rock? I’ve no idea how they managed to seal it up like this.”

The other figure was checking out some other screens. “It seems like they planned for that; the currently fitted module is a mining laser. Should make short work of the thin crust and then we’re free. You say you can get us more modules?”
“Certainly can, I’ve got contacts at Vesta who found a store of them and are looking to sell on the cheap.”

“Well, I guess all I’ve got to find now is a crew.”

Welcome to Spacepunk, a character sci-fi RP based in our own solar system as humanity recovers from an unspecified system-wide cataclysm. Whilst this the OOC thread, I'll be looking for semi-IC character apps, done in a resume/job application format, but feel free to ask OOC questions about the theme, which can be found on this page (partially a work in progress, apologies). Have a good read before applying. Whilst nominally associated with the Axiom region, and whose members will get first refusal, it's open to any competent and reliable RPers.

When dropping in a character app, in addition to the above information, include a brief character description, some back story about them (including why they want to join up) and any other pertinent information you think might bring them to life. Remember that different parts of the system confer certain physical traits.

Notes on the theme:

Spacepunk is set in a realistic world, where fuel and delta-V rules, and space travel is long and dangerous. Most civilisations have spacecraft, but aside from the more powerful nations' military, a lot of spaceships are privately owned (think the way shipping is done on Earth at the moment). The system is littered with the relics of a lost Golden Age and most people only remember it as legend; it's long enough ago that it's way beyond living memory, although the exact time is unspecified. The major powers rule their homelands, but out in space, beyond the reach of whatever authority they claim, everything is there for the taking.

Main NPCs

Name: Ember Kone
Position: Captain
World of origin: Unstated
Nationality:: Unstated
Previous experience:Unstated
Other info: Ember Kone is the current captain and apparent owner of the SS Saxifrage but aside from that, she is very reticent about disclosing anything about her background. Her height and build mark her down as either an Earther or Venusian, with her accent and mannerisms more of Earth. Her Asiatic ethnicity makes her nationality probably UTF or one of the American states, but the diaspora of Earth cultures prior to the cataclysm makes this difficult to determine. As well as speaking Standard English, the lingua fracas of the system, she also displays a good knowledge of Chinese, Hindi and Spanish. Her knowledge of the Saxifrage and its systems is quite comprehensive, and she evidently has a great deal of affection for the ship. Her current attitude to the crew is quite mercenary though; they do their job, they get paid.

Name: Wi Chen
Position: Fence/Handler/Black Marketeer
World of origin: Unknown
Nationality:: Unknown (currently claims to be Ceresian)
Previous experience: Unknown
Other info: Wi Chen is the Saxifrage's on-shore contact, who relays potential jobs to the ship from 'customers'. The exact nature of his relationship with Captain Kone is unknown; the two know each other well, but their conversation is often belligerent and Kone is often dismissive of Chen's opinions. He claims to be a 'Big Man' in the Ceres-based criminal gangs and also have contacts in the Ceres Corporation organisation, having lived there all his life, but his physiology is that of a planet-dweller, not a Belter, so no one takes this too seriously.

Bold. I like it. What's the status of cybernetics and prosthetics in this RP?

Good start, a few points though:

Io is currently uninhabited, the radiation from Jupiter and geologically unstable surface have rendered it so. There might be opportunities in the future, but for now, it's fairly barren.
Your character's nationality should be one of the existing factions in the background information.
The Kuiper Belt is a long, long way off. Current drive technology is good, but it would still take almost 2 years to get there and back. The Asteroid Belt is far easier. I'm not saying there's nothing out there worth getting, but there's no commercial activities as of the moment.

If your character is from a faction with a comparative tech level of V, then cybernetics are fairly ubiquitous and advanced, often improving on the norm. Tech level IV will see some basic function replacement with no loss of control or ability. Tech level III prosthetics are clumsy and obviously artificial. Below that and you're looking at what we have these days.

Some links to some examples:

Rashanda smiled as she answered. "I've spent the better part of 50 years in a hospital environment fighting diseases new and old, mending broken limbs, and performing complicated surgeries. While I love what I do, it becomes monotonous after a time. Helping keep a crew safe and healthy in space would not only be a change of pace, but present new challenges and opportunities that I might otherwise miss in a surface hospital."

Re-using a character from my now (sadly) dead science fiction RP. Shame, too, because it was a wonderful thing.

Some other questions:

Are there any sub-Tier III civilizations out there in space? The ones you have only seem to be on Earth, and as nice as Earth is, I think it'd be more interesting to have space savages than regular Earth savages.
What happened to Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (which is a planet, dammit) and the Kuiper Belt, if it takes so long to get there?
Was the Oort Cloud ever reached?
Are starfighters a thing?
Exactly how knowledgeable are you about the tabletop game Traveller?
Why the sparse app? There's not even an Appearance section. Nothing wrong with it (one of the most fun RPs I've ever been in had a sparse app) just curious.
If you haven't put it in, can we decide the descriptions for nations?

Name: Nokai Kozlov
Age: 29
World of origin: Europa
Nationality: Europian
Position(s) applied for: Engineer [navigation and sensors]
Relevant skills: Data analysis, systems engineering, software development, electrical engineering, robotics, basic neuroscience
Previous experience:
- One year employed as an orbital flight planner on Europa
- Five years spent working with autonomous probes and submersibles as systems engineer under KRTK (Kvartsevyy Robototekhnika, Tekhnologiya i Kosmonavtika)
- Four years spent studying physics and engineering at YSU
- Nine years of experience reconstituting meals, brewing improvised caffeine beverages, and producing mysterious broth via unknown processes. (Suspected ingredients include dead lab rats, various microbial cultures, and salt water.)

Backstory:
Nokai Kozlov grew up in one of many subsurface stations in the shallower waters of Europa's oceans, the youngest child in a family of four (formerly five). Nokai's mother Saydiina Kozlov worked as one of the many technicians who maintained the massive filters on solution miners used to collect both minerals and fresh water for the inhabitants; as a result, Nokai gained early exposure to a great number of drones and submarines that were used in construction and maintenance throughout the colonies, stoking an early interest in autonomous systems, electronics, and robotics— something that often came in useful when it came to fixing damaged or malfunctioning drones that zir mother occasionally recovered to sell to others who needed them. Not only did this allow Nokai to gain a background in amateur robotics and systems engineering, but the supplementary income was helpful for supporting the family after the death of Nokai's father Dalan Kozlov, eventually helping to fund Nokai's college and university education. After finishing zir tenure at YSU, ze spent a year working from home as a 3rd-party orbital flight planner before finding a job at KRTK designing and maintaining a plethora of autonomous systems, vehicles, and probes, a few of them relics remaining from the pre-Cataclysm era. After a short while, however, KRTK nearly entirely cut off funding for the sector that employed Nokai, forcing zir to find work elsewhere; the recent spike in opportunities for freelance spacecraft operators has prompted Nokai to seek employment aboard the Saxifrage.

Description:
Nokai Kozlov's penchant for automation and robotics shows through even at first glance. Frequently, one can spot small drones following zir around, whether it be by land, by air, or by sea; if one is near the cluttered workshop that is zir home, one can observe veritable cloud of palm-sized robots performing various tasks either for testing purposes or simply to make Nokai's life a little bit easier— or harder, depending if they feel more uncooperative than usual. Typically donning a pocket patchwork of a utility cloak over a worn coat, Nokai is prone to carrying random bits and bobs that often come in handy when engaging in makeshift engineering. Among these ever-present scraps exists a baseball-sized computer and a number of peripherals; while the design was rather outdated even in the first years of the Digital Renaissance, it is still quite useful to Nokai. Nokai is a rather plain, 1.59m-tall Asiatic Europian with brown eyes and black hair.

Minor civilisations exist, I'll probably drop a few in as the theme fleshes out, but tier III is about minimum for survival on an unterraformed world.

What happened to Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (which is a planet, dammit) and the Kuiper Belt, if it takes so long to get there?

The far outer planets were reached and exploited, but the cataclysm that affected the entire system hit hardest on those places that relied on external supplies and trade. If there are still existing communities out there, they're small and very isolated.... hey, perhaps that's an upcoming plot hook....

Was the Oort Cloud ever reached?

Probably. The pre-Cataclysm civilisation was very advanced.

Are starfighters a thing?

I'll pin my colours to the mast now; space fighters are silly. Drones, perhaps, but small manned fighters like in Star Wars, no.

Exactly how knowledgeable are you about the tabletop game Traveller?

Until I started planning this, I'd never heard of it. Now I have. It pops up a lot in researching this kind of thing. Suffice to say, I'm interested.

Why the sparse app? There's not even an Appearance section. Nothing wrong with it (one of the most fun RPs I've ever been in had a sparse app) just curious.

I envisaged fleshing out the characters once the intial concept was agreed on.

If you haven't put it in, can we decide the descriptions for nations?

Yes, so long as I think it fits the theme. Tbh, I was struggling for original ideas, so the input would be valued.

Pity, I wanted asteroid savages. Ah well, there's always weird asteroid sun/darkness/cargo cults.

Space Fighters a la Star Wars or Space Battleship Yamato probably wouldn't be a thing, yes, but something similar could exist - either space torpedo plane like vehicles that drop a big KEP on a target and run like hell, or 'space fighters' that are really just atmo fighters capable of working in space, kinda like the VFs from Macross but with lessened space capability and no mechness.

Xah wrote:I envisaged fleshing out the characters once the intial concept was agreed on.

Yeah, I can see the reasoning for that, but it may turn away some of the people who prefer a more detailed app, some of whom are pretty damn good.

Name: Quil Ortèa
World of origin: Earth
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Nationality: Luna Republican
Position applied for: Chief Engineer
Relevant skills: Vehicular engineering, moderate software coding, soldering, simple mechanic roles, torch drive mechanics, material sciences.
Previous experience:
- Worked as Second Engineer on Lunar comet retrieval programs, part of the design and testing teams for multiple comet trajectory redirection prototypes.
- Worked as a researcher for the Lunar Republic's R&D for the above job.
- Worked as XO on father's merchant vessels.
- Worked as ETO on father's merchant vessels.

Backstory
Quil Ortèa comes from a once-wealthy merchant family and was the third of seven children. His father, Brano Ortèa, spent the majority of his life competing against other familial businesses; he dealt particularly in transporting food to Martian states and ore back to Earth. This period of his life was when his love for tinkering was stoked - many improvements were made aboard his father's ships, proving his ingenuity and ability to maximize his resources. Quil worked as the ETO on his father's first and primary vessel, the Crocus, before he decided to pursue bigger ambitions. Winning an engineering competition at 16, he was granted a spot to study at a prestigious university in the Lunar Republic, partially funded by his share in the family business and partially by the Lunar Republic in the form of scholarships. Graduating yielded several positions, most notably from the Republic's government. In his profession, Quil traversed to the inner reaches of the Asteroid Belt, part of a research mission to investigate the revival of comet redirection to revive Luna's atmosphere. He has some experience with craft integrity, but largely specializes in engines and electronics. Unfortunately, after a disagreement with the program's director concerning testing results, he was dismissed with six years of experience under his belt. At 27, he still has a lot to look forward to in life and wishes to continue his space-faring occupation.
Quil is looking for a new take on the implementation of his experience, and going freelance on an MMT is as close as anything to his work prior to Luna. Quil's passion for pre-Cataclysm technology will be put to good use. Additionally, his knowledge and work aboard ships gives him plenty of experience to draw from.

Description
Quil chose to replace his left eye with a cybernetic 'enhancement' during his time in university on Luna, and also supports a spinal implant that allows for compatibility with 'smart' wearables, as well as magnetic implants in his fingers that enhance his senses. As a forward (or past, in this case) -thinking tech enthusiast, Quil doesn't shy in the face of new technology. He sports olive skin, grey eyes, dark hair, and stands at 1.82 meters.

In this universe, physics is king and I'm playing the realism card quite heavy when it comes to space travel. Small fighters would lack the delta-V to do anything other than buzz past the target, release weapons and then try to stop or turn around. Not only that, but pilots are subject to g-forces and radiation, and require prohibitively massy life support. Just ditch the pilot altogether and get a computer instead.

As for atmosphere-to-space vehicles, the delta-V to escape the gravity well pretty much exhausts most fuel tanks, it's why all the big planets have space elevators and most ships stay in high orbit. There's specialised craft for going down to the planet.

Question. What do the different tech categories mean? Like, what techs do level V civs have that level IVs don't, and what do IVs have that IIIs don't?
