To add on *really late*... CLs are generally not considered "capital ships", by definition. Heck, said term is generally reserved for ships of battlecruiser tonnage and above. (Deutschland-class cruisers and Alaska-class cruisers are occasionally considered the exceptions... except the Deutschlands are effectively sporting battleship armament ANYWAY - hence the "pocket battleship" moniker, and Alaskas are effectively battlecruisers except for the fact that the USN didn't recognise the classification).

There technically isn't a formal criteria. The Washington Naval Treaty uses one that I think includes battleships, carriers, and battlecruisers. But in general, a good rule of thumb would be:

"These characteristics define a capital ship: if the capital ships are beaten, the navy is beaten. But if the rest of the navy is beaten, the capital ships can still operate. Another characteristic that defines capital ships is that their main opponent is each other." ~ William S. Lind, "America Can Win", p. 90

Side note: Possible AACL coming up in a bit.

Well, Washington did define the upper limit for what is a cruiser in general: 10,000 ton maximum displacement and 8-inch guns. London, however, did define Heavy and Light Cruisers, to quote Wikipedia: "Light cruisers were defined as cruisers having guns of 6.1-inch (155 mm) or smaller, with heavy cruisers defined as cruisers having guns of up to 8-inch (203 mm). In both cases, the ships could not be greater than 10,000 tons." (Source.)
Design and operation practice in the war saw light cruisers as the larger work horses to the small work ponies that were destroyers, frigates and corvettes, which is a good metaphor, if you ask me.
However, the definition of capital ship, that you quoted, is true as well. Without them, the Navy can't fight (effectively).
In short, I'd say, that it depends heavily on doctrine, equipment and a few other factors as to what a light cruiser, heavy cruiser, battlecruiser, cruiser killer and so on is, what it does and how it does it.

I look forward to the cruiser!

It's also a matter of doctrine to some extent. US uses her CLs mostly as AA escorts (iirc), while in contrast, the Japanese developed CLs first and foremost as "destroyer leaders", effectively flagships of small fleet action. So if you take even a CL of both nations, and tweak the definition around, a Japanese CL could well be closer to the definition of "capital ship" then US. Perhaps.

And app!

Personnel file - Operational Sector Wide Sea - South West

Name: IJN/HIJMS Yuubetsu
Type: Light Cruiser
Class: Nagara-class (modified)
Role: Fleet escort, surface action, anti-aircraft
Nation of origin: Japan
Year commissioned: 1944
Image or description of the ship girl/boy:
Image

Gender: Female
Character:
Timid, easily startled, with serious self-esteem issues due to her perception as being "outdated" coupled with her service history, which was effectively repeated air raids that she was expected to take on.

Special abilities:
As one of Japan's first anti-aircraft specialists, she is pretty much the definition of overspecialised, sporting a vast array of AA armament to the extent of not actually carrying torpedoes. While her main 10 cm/65 Type 98 naval gun is capable of taking on light foes, it is vastly inadequate when faced with tougher opponents due to diminished armour penetration capability.

Technical Description of the vessel:
Image

The last Nagara-class hull had her fitting out delayed for more than two decades in order to abide, nominally, to the Washington Naval Treaty's agreement on cruiser construction. In the midst of the Pacific War, Japan (or rather, the Naval Provinces) found themselves in need of additional anti-aircraft vessels when the crippling of the carrier fleet meant that air superiority was no longer guaranteed. Finding the mothballed hull in Kure Naval Arsenal, a decision was made by Hashirajima to arm her for this new task despite the existing technology on board already being outdated at that point in time. Eschewing for the first time torpedo armament due to size limitation, Yuubetsu was instead given in the place of the torpedo tubes the newly developed 76.5 mm/115 3rd Year Type (Model 1914) Kihô, or 12 cm 28-tube Rocket Lancher, in addition to the newer Type 96 25 mm AT/AA Gun for light AA and a main battery of 10 cm (3.9inch)/65 cal. Type 98 AA guns.

Technical Data
Displacement: 5,659 t (5,570 long tons) (normal)
Length (overall): 162.1 m (531 ft 10 in)
Width (it's Beam, ya'know): 14.2 m (46 ft 7 in)
Draught: 4.8 m (15 ft 9 in)
Propulsion: 4 shaft Gihon geared turbines; 12 Kampon boilers; 90,000 shp (67,000 kW)
Speed: 36 knots (41 mph; 67 km/h)
Complement: 450
Armament:
18 × 10 cm (3.9inch)/65 cal. Type 98 AA guns (9x2)
112 × 12 cm (4.7") AA Rocket (4 x 28)
28 × 25 mm (0.98 in) Type 96 AA guns (14x2)
12 × 7.7mm machine guns
Armour:
Belt: 60 mm (2.4 in)
Deck: 30 mm (1.2 in)

Notes:
A heavily-AA oriented vessel, this ship generally should not see surface combat against foes of over light-cruiser classification.

No, it's not fine. 1950 is max.
And please also write a short description of the aircraft carried by the carrier.

To my knowledge, Japanese CLs were much faster and carried lighter armaments because as said, they acted as small-fleet flagships to provide slightly heavier firepower to the destroyer squadrons. American CLs were designed with fast-firing DP guns and a lot of anti-aircraft, but generally had a good deal more in the armor department (comparing the Cleveland-class and Ooyodo, two later war cruisers. Speaking broadly, CLs are not intended to be capital ships because they are not designed to lead larger fleet operations, the lightest ship class intended to do so would be a heavy cruiser since they generally were intended to engage other heavy ships and have the facilities to support an Admiral when he is conducting planning.

But then again, Kancolle threw this out the window when it let Fubuki be flagship in a formation with a fast battleship and two fleet carriers. So figuring that in, whoever wants to be flagship certainly can be. :)

Class: Tokai carrier
Role: Main striking carrier
Nation of origin: Higher Japan
Year commissioned: 1937
Image or description of the ship girl/boy: https://tinyurl.com/y8dg677m
Gender: Female
Character: Due to her nature as a light carrier, people look down on her which gave rise to an ideal of proving her worth, although she could be compared to a regular girl when not in combat or being compared.
Special abilities: Her cannons can engage surface targets.
Technical Description of the vessel:

A highly experimental carrier which was essentially an earlier version of the Taiho, Tokai was the first armored carrier to be built and purpose built for it with armored flight decks and a heavy anti air armament that could also double as anti surface weapons when needed. When she was first launched, she was plagued with problems even at the first voyage. The moment she launched, her engines failed to power her port propellers mid way through her first voyage which left her listing and to be hauled back to port for repairs. Thus, delaying her released until early 1937. She was said to be the first step into a new era as she was the first carrier to be fielded into main engagements, even being assigned to defend the imperial palace from air attacks.

She had a wide array of planes only given to her in 1943 (Since in our timeline, we still built them but they were built earlier with better materials and better environments). Before then she was known to field planes that were old, even during her time in defense of the palace.

After an unfortunate accidental collision with one of the Kokai's, she was ultimately scrapped. But her insignia, a crest at the bow of the ship painted on was forged out of her steel and now resides in a museum. The Kokai survived.

What about more aesthetic things such as electromagnetic catapult or steam catapult instead of a hydrologic one?

*thinks about it* then again, it could be interesting to make a steampowered crossbow.

Considering our ships are <1950s era, EM catapults wouldn't likely fit especially on older warships because nuclear powered supercarriers weren't a thing (which are big and complex enough to operate them.) Steam might work since it was a technology in use at the time.

Designed as a trump card to be used during the outbreak of the Parcian-Volkstradi war, he was used, in conjunction with the vast cruiser fleet of Rome, he served as the Imperial navy as a heavy combat vessel. He is most well known for sinking 3 of the 4 of the Volkstradi Battleship squadron from 12 miles outside their gun range, making use of his advanced radar and fire control computer as well as his super heavy AP shot to devastate them in a few salvos.

He suffered extensive damage during the battle of Cairo, we he was caught out of position and ambushed by the Volkstradi cruiser squadron while anchored. While suffering heavily from the oncoming fire, he held his position and covered various Imperial military and civilian assets out of the neutral country. Luckily the cruisers smaller guns were unable to penetrate his impressive armor plating (owing to the Krupp designed plate).

His return fire was able to sink or heavily damage 8 enemy ships. This last stand at Cairo was immortalized across the world as a massive blow to the Volkstrdi war machine. he spent the rest of the war in a dockyard in Rome. His total kill count came to 4 enemy battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 8 light cruisers, 23 enemy mercantile ships, 12 Enemy destroyers, and 2 submarines (moored in dock) as well as over a hundred enemy aircraft.

The shipgi--I mena ship boy, came it to being when the abyssals made them selves known. As a person, he is rather shy and secretly afraid of living up tot he reputation of the ship he is named after, but it prepared to do what he hast to do. "Super AP" - Making use of Steel jacketed, tungsten cored rounds, Monty can fire a few salvos of "Super AP" rounds, capable of shattering the armor plate of most known warships of his time. Rounds are custom forged in Parcia, at the Imperial Arsenal in Rome, and have to be issued as ordered.

Exactly.

Well, I actually haven't considered that for now, but it will have something to do with the salvage operations: With the ressources gathered there, it should be possible to get something up and running. From there, things will develop within the confines of the tech-frame (so even if your ship was later equipped with cruise missiles, you still won't have them). The precise mechanics will be worked out at a later date, but for now, major remodels will have to wait (a few more AA-guns, for example, are fine, but entirely new superstructure or something, no).
Also, we could use a repair ship for that... *hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, say no more*

Novaya Equestria wrote:Alrighty! But we'll need a Fairy app! And another KanColle based RP, this time involving la fairies!

I wanted to handle the fairies a bit less formal, so if you would direct your attention to the rules-spoiler again, you'll see the corresponding amendment.
As for a fairy RP... maybe in the future.

I'm not good with subtle references...... And repair ships, as in like a dedicated ship? Is there such a thing?

Parcia wrote:Finished up my app. Wanted ask what was the possibility of him using the W23 Shell.

While I am in no way an authority in this RP, see the italicized and underlined words. It's the OPs. Not to mention, if going by real-world time, the W23 wasn't developed until 1956, even then the shell it was from the W19 also wasn't made until 1955.

The Selkie wrote:First: No nuclear vessels or shells. That'd be mean - both to the Abyssals and, more importantly, to poor Caty, who then has even less reasons to be around if everyone of cruiser size could throw nukes at those poor buggers. Sorry.

Not to mention, your response to the question "Have you read and understood the rules?", would indicate that you did not read all of them or didn't read it at all.

Character: A genial and helpful individual off-field, he’s more likely to brew up some moonshine, jam away on his guitar, and party the night away rather than fight. But on the field, he is a quiet coordinator and a deadly shot.

While technically not deployed against any sovereign nation, the Partisan Wars of the 1940s gave rise to hidden convoys and improvised submarines used by the communist revolutionaries. Thus, the Telcontar was ultimately designed to not only protect and detect threats out at sea, but also hunt down convoys. It served with distinction, being the first flagship of his class with the honorable kill count of 12 Improvised Submersibles, 20 enemy mercantile ships, 5 light cruisers, 3 heavy cruisers, and 2 Battleships (moored in dock). After the Partisan War ended in ‘48, he ultimately was used as a training vessel for members of his class, until obsoleted by Telcontar-IIs, and later vessels of his class until he now rests at the Royal Naval Academy Museum in Sol Invictus.
Special abilities: True Target: Using his vast radar array, he can scan ships to discern weaknesses, and communicate them to his allies. Chance of finding critical weak points increases with intel or experience against said vessels. True Target can also be used to help salvage or discover items in the sea.

We need more destroyers, so here's one.

Postby Rynagria » Tue Sep 26, 2017 10:51 am

Personell file - Operational Sector Wide Sea - South West

Name: RNC Aveugle "CanCan" (DD-167)
Type: Destroyer
Class: Fletcher-class destroyer
Role: Fleet Escort, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Aircraft Warfare, Surface Warfare, and Scouting
Nation of origin: Design from United States of America, built in Rynagria
Year commissioned: 1942
Image or description of the ship girl/boy:
Image

Image

Gender: Male
Character: Amiable by default, he would like nothing more than to be friends we everyone that he met, having gone so far as to attempt to openly communicate to the Abyssal in several occasions. Despite this, does not prevent him from enjoying combat, getting a massive rush from it. In some cases, getting so carried away that, he will continue to fire on the target until his ammunition is out. And in the case that anyone should turn against the fleet he's in, will have no hesitation in trying to sink you with a hail of 127mm shells and torpedoes.
Special abilities: Jack of All Trade- While not excelling at any specific field, it's versatility allows to fill in certain roles in a fleet and diverse spread of weaponry can tackle most enemies that can potentially be encountered in the sea.
Technical Description of the vessel:
While not the first Fletcher-classed destroyer in the Rynagrian Navy, he was the first to be created in Rynagria, with many following shortly after. Finished by December 1941, he was commissioned shortly after in February 1942. Mockingly named the "CanCan", due the cramped living space in the ship, similar to that of a can and the Captain choice of music he played for the crew when they would go off for a patrol in the Rynagrian coast. However, with the war in the pacific well in their way, Aveugle was quickly deployed into the Pacific Ocean in a destroyer fleet. Primary actions against the Japanese was primarily limited to anti-submarine warfare, using more than 120 total depth charges during their time in the pacific. With all Rynagrian Fletcher-class destroyers supposed to be stay there until the end of the war, that would not be the case during a particular scouting mission. In the process of crossing an open expanse of Aveugle's fleet sector, was discovered by a returning flight of B7A2s and was engaged. Torpedoes already spent, the flight the torpedo-bombers resorted to strafing the deck with their 20mm gun, which would leave 8 dead and 60+ injured. The most damage was done when a particular daring Japanese pilot decided to buzz the bridge, which was disabled by an accurate 20mm gunner, sending the plane's left wing crashing into the bridge and grazing the side of the bridge.

With a third of bridge rendered inoperable, they made their way to the nearest docks and made temporary repairs, the process taking almost two years to get Aveugle to combat ready status. And despite the repairs not being entirely finished, "CanCan" made its way to Rynagrian waters along with the majority of the destroyers deployed in the pacific. Becoming part of the Rynagrian Invasion forces for Arhimenstein, the crew of the Aveugle would experience their most tensest situations. In five separate occasions, the destroyer found itself practically within point-blank ranges for naval encounters in 1944 with Type 34 destroyers, all occurring at night. Choosing diplomacy first, the crew offered truce between crews or surrender their ships. Of the five instances, three surrendered while the other two refused, which were sunk with accompanying submarines. Not long after that, their destroyer fleet was involved in the sinking of an Arhimenstein Scharnhorst-class battleship. From there on out, Aveugle would be relegated to fleet escort duty.

Perhaps the defining moment of his career is the February 1945 friendly fire incident, when during a night patrol, a friendly light cruiser fired upon them and another Fletcher-class destroyer. Gravely damaging his partner, Aveugle fired several torpedoes and the majority of the five-inch guns in retaliation and sunk the friendly cruiser. As a result, the Captain of Aveugle was court martialed and the crew given leave, while the ship was decommissioned. Aveugle's decommissioned status would last until 1947, where it was given a refit for the changing times, such as a more advanced radar system and a more effective sonar. Then in 1989, was given FRAM II modifications, fitting more anti-submarine warfare equipment to help counteract the growing reliance of modern navies in submarines. Finally, Aveugle was decommissioned in 2008 and replaced by Arleigh Burkley-class destroyers, and was scrapped in 2010.

Considering our ships are <1950s era, EM catapults wouldn't likely fit especially on older warships because nuclear powered supercarriers weren't a thing (which are big and complex enough to operate them.) Steam might work since it was a technology in use at the time.

Actually EM catapults take up less space, though energy consumption might be an issue, their main advantage is that they can launch aircrafts at different set speeds allowing for a more diverse collection of aircraft to be launched (mostly a modern advantage since we have drones nowadays).

Looking into it, it is smaller and takes up less energy, but it is incredibly complex and was only just put on the most cutting edge aircraft carrier. Electromagnetic (propulsive) technology is fairly recent, it would not have a place on carriers from the 1950s.

In her initial service, he was equipped with a catapult launched Be-4 float plane as a spotter. However, in 1941 the Sergei Malinokov engaged the Turkish light cruiser, Suleiman III, and heavy cruiser, Mehmed V, off the coast of Haska. With the aid of the coastal batteries at Haska Fortress, both ships were sunk, but the Malinokov sustained heavy damage and was moored at the naval base near Voleningorad. After repairs and refits in the summer of 1943, the Malinokov returned to service for the rest of the war. Her final refit occurred in 1957 where the number 3 turret was removed to make room for the Dragon 1 Anti-Ship Missile System and the number 4 turret was removed to mount a Sa-2 Anti-Air Missile system and a landing pad for a Kamov Ka-27.

Special abilities: Advanced firing computer - The Montgomery, "Monty", makes use of an advanced firing computer, when used in conjunction with its powerful search radar (limited to 45 miles), Monty can make full use of his 31 mile gun range and rain hell down upon his foes with impunity from over the horizon.

Looking into it, it is smaller and takes up less energy, but it is incredibly complex and was only just put on the most cutting edge aircraft carrier. Electromagnetic (propulsive) technology is fairly recent, it would not have a place on carriers from the 1950s.

Please just leave the EM-catapults at home.

The Leaba-class of Destroyer Tenders was one of the most underestimated ships in the history of the SDF-Navy, mainly because it didn't feature, what people usually associate with mighty warships. She neither had big guns, nor aircraft, not massive arrays of torpedo tubes... what she had were the workshops and facilities to support, supply and maintain a small division of torpedo boats or a flotilla of destroyers, including more tasking repair jobs.
In their time, the SDF-Navy built three of these vessels, Leaba, Imeall and Ámóg, lovingly called Amy by her crews and the crews of the torpedo boats she worked with.
The Amy was commissioned in 1922 and almost immediately send to support a division of torpedo boats in the waters of the Archipelago, where she had a long and mostly unassuming career in hunting down and destroying wanna-be-privateers with her boats, with much success. Refitted in 1942 to carry more AA-armament and loosing some of her capabilities in that refit, she remained in service until 1991 - even participating in the Second Vellenge War, where she acted as a transport and repair workshop for the land-push of Operation Summer Sun. When she was put out of service, the legend goes, her first Captain stated, that the love of his life was going.

Reathaí-class Torpedo Boats, also called 'The Fleet's Runners', were small, wooden-hulled torpedo boats with a steelen skeleton. Bringing a bit less then a hundred tons of weight onto the table, these 33.5 metres long, 4.9 metres wide and 1.48 metres deep boats were armed with two torpedo tubes, later increased to four (Reathaí Mark II), and three 20mm AA-guns (they could also carry 10 mines). A round-bottomed hull and two small rudders by the side of the main rudder provide the so-called Lürssen-Effekt, when employed, allowing the seaworthy hull to sustain speeds of 45 to 50 knots for short times, three Diesel Engines providing 3,000 kilowatts of Energy (cruising is done at 15 to 20 knots). The living conditions were cramped, staying at sea with such a boat for longer then a day was highly uncomfortable, but their operational worth was increased with radio, better torpedoes, improved tactics and simple luck.
Oftentimes, Reathaí-class Torpedo Boats operated together with a tender, for example... Amy.

Nowadays built to scale and operated by fairies, the Reathaí-class Torpedo Boats are still a very powerful asset to any fleet.

So... thoughts? EDIT: Hold onto them, the boats are missin'!
