WORLD OF TESLA
by The Free Territory of Makhnovia

It's January, 1930 and the world looks like something from an early science fiction stories one could find in The Weird Tales magazine - zeppelins roam the skies above huge art-deco skyscrapers, jazz performed on theremins flows from the juke-joints, while gangsters fight with electric guns. It is a World made by Telsa, although not the world he might have dreamed of. How did it all started?

In 1893 Nikola Tesla makes an interesting allience- he is approached by Charles Yerkes, baron of mass transit. Yerkes shows great interest in development of wireless broadcast thinking it can give him some edge over his business rivals. The first wireless transmitter is built in 1902. with Yerkeses money and world entered a new era. After Yerkes died in 1905 Yerkes- Tesla foundation continued to work to make world a better place, now working for benefit on mankind and not for Yerkes financial interests. Flood of inventions came into the world: radio, electrotherapy, microwaves, huge electrically powered factories that increased production by hundred-fold while reducing the amount of human work needed. But no amount of technology can eliminate man's greed and ambition. And some events happen no matter what. Again, it was the murder of Austrian heir to the throne that had opened Pandora's box of destruction.

In 1914 World War started raging with new destructive power as all sides involved used Tesla's invention to kill and destroy. It kept on for full five years, destroying much of what's been build and changing the face of world. It ended undecisively, with a victory for US backed Entente powers, and World Council was put in place to take care of the world peace. However, behind the curtain of new world diplomacy arms race rages on. There are new states that are eager to play the field, old empires trying to keep balance of power suits them. There is Yerkes- Tesla foundation torn between profit and will to benefit mankind and there are neo-luddites that blame technology for recent bloodshed and economic recession in 1929 that hit technologically underdeveloped countries the hardest.

OOC

Discord

Technological inventions that are around
Airships of different varieties, now using safer helium and better diesel and electrical engines

Tesla's World Wireless System is implemented in most of the industrialized world. USA is covered by rows of Wardenclyffe Towers. however, due to the war in Europe there had been setbacks to installing them there. So radio, TV, wireless phone and fascimile all exist.

The devepment of radio led to development of first radio-controlled planes. They are small in size and mostly used as spy-crafts.

During the Great War Austro-Hungarian and Serbian army both researched eloctro-magnetic rifles and cannons. Technology is still somewhat unreliable and cluncky but is being further developed by many military complexes.

The advancements of electrical energy resulted in larger investment in improvement of internal combustion engines made by automotive industries resulting in better combustion engines. Germans, USA, and recently USSR, Japan and Scandinavia are leading in this kind of development.

In 1920's first electrical computers named "Electro-brains" have been developed by Yerkes-Tesla. They go under the names of EB I to EB VII. They are capable of performing complex mathematical calculations and they take up entire rooms.

Cellar, Tsing-Hua Restaurant, Bar, and Tea House
British District, Shanghai International Settlement, Japanese Empire

"I think I hear shooting. Could you go check that out while I pry this dead moron off the equipment? Even in death he's annoying, damn."

"Sure thing, Sven. Don't drop it on your foot. I'm not being your personal nurse again."

Between the clashing power of the Japanese Empire and the British Empire, between the dual influence of European culture and Asian culture, and between the ancient civilisation and the latest technologies, lies the Shanghai International Settlement. In this vast horizon filled with homes and businesses, some twenty-seven thousand Scandinavian citizens have made their home. Most of them lived here, in the British District. It was a somewhat nicer and better maintained district, as it happens, than was really typical in Shanghai, but any European would have called it a slum with good reason.

"There's no blasted time! The constabulary is here, now! We need to get out of here!"

"...and waste a year's effort, Chang? I think not! Go ahead if you're so cowardly. Johanna and I can carry the equipment with us."

Theoretically, Scandinavia, as one of about a dozen treaty powers with co-jurisdiction in the city center, had the security of its citizens living within the borders of the International Settlement guaranteed by the Shanghai Municipal Council. Theoretically, the Shanghai International Settlement was ruled by no one nation and was a haven for men of all colours from every corner of the globe.

Theoretically.

The cooling corpse of the engineer lay bleeding through his leather headgear into the wooden floor of the cellar. The smell was both overpowering and awful. Johanna peeked around the corner. The ping-ping of pneumatic gunfire greeted her. She turned back around quickly, and blindly fired all six rounds of her revolver down the corridor. Sven did slightly better. He picked up the mysterious device off the floor next to the engineer, and, with effort, rattled it out into the corridor. It was an experimental electric bunker assault coil, still somewhat fresh from the press in Detroit - such good weapons were hard to find in Shanghai, and was therefore in high demand with every criminal gang in the city. Unfortunately, it also weighed some thirty kilograms.

Everybody knew that the two Japanese members of the Shanghai Municipal Council mattered more than the other seven, of course. They didn't really care about Shanghai's residents, either. Especially not the foreign residents of the Shanghai International Settlement.

With the reckless negligence of the Shanghai Municipal Council, it was no wonder that the Shanghai International Settlement was such a centre of crime, and in the British District, the Tsing-Hua Tea House was the worst. It was technically a part of the Shanghai International Settlement, but fronted a road that led right into the French Concession and was rather close to the racecourse with its endless supply of alcoholics. The British soldiers of the garrison that were supposed to patrol this area were more likely to drop by and ask to rent a girl for a night than to actually arrest the bar owner, and the Americans... well, no sane American in Shanghai wanted to leave the American District. Not even the strong men of the 4th Marines.

"Well, you're not getting out that way. Hurry, we'll leave through the back alley. Before the constabulary makes their way through that corridor."

Johanna lifted the cover off her watch. The intricate clockwork told her that it was a little after eight in the evening.

"...and preferably before our ride leaves without us, too."

Legally, any Scandinavian citizen resident to or visiting the Shanghai International Settlement was subject to only Scandinavian law and SMC law. That, however, never stopped the Japanese from vigorously trying to enforce the Imperial Laws of Japan on foreign residents in Shanghai. This meant, among other things, that harsher punishments were levied upon Scandinavian criminals than was really appropriate by Scandinavian law.

More importantly, it also meant that the possession of armaments of any sort by private citizens were often "strongly discouraged" by the Japanese - a recommendation that they sometimes enforced through sheer intimidation and violence.

The creaky garbage collection door opened into the street. Sven struggled to pulled the machine up, with Johanna and Chang pushing from the inside. With a few seconds to spare, the three people disappeared into the French Concession.

As for the weapon?

The little machine stolen by a French shipping clerk from an American industrial company, then stolen by a Japanese criminal gang from the French shipping clerk, then by a corrupt officer of the Shanghai Municipal Police from the Japanese criminal gang, then by the Tsing-Hua Tea House from the corrupt officer, and finally by a couple of plucky Scandinavian petty assassins with a little help from a translator disappeared back into the night.

"Gentlemen," Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald boomed, "this is a year that has held a great amount of trouble for Britain. Mohandas Gandhi is as strong as ever in his mission to create an independent India; we are facing the beginning of a stunning worldwide Great Depression; and, as you know, the Labour Party is losing faith in my ability to govern, which I find ridiculous. Now, to add to the heap of worries, a new, advanced technology weapon has been stolen from other thieves in the Shanghai International Settlement."

"But Sir," says a shadow cabinet member, "surely, that is in Japanese territory?"

"It was in the British Dsitrict. They haven't discovered who the current thieves are yet, but this will just worsen our relationship with the Japanese Empire. You know who they'll suspect. I don't want to start unnecessary...warfare.

"To avoid such measures, the British government has 48 hours to address the issue and give some expalanation. I don't know exactly what to say."

"Sir," pipes up the cabinet member, "the weapon in question...do you know of which company it is?

"Don't be incompetent," says another member, "there's only one company who could have created such advanced weaponry."

"I suggest," says MacDonald with a wry smile, "we write a curt little letter to the Yerkes-Tesla Foundation asking for an explanation, shall we?"

The Thirtieth of July, One Thousand, Nine Hundred Twenty Nine (1929)

To the Yerkes-Tesla Foundation,

As you definitely know, at precisely 11:00 last night, the [CONFIDENTIAL] weapon created by you was stolen from original thieves at the Shanghai International Settlement, in the British District. I believe this was a heist pulled by a nation or assembled organization to frame the British government. We are already under fire for our soldiers being negligent while the [CONFIDENTIAL] weapon was stolen. I know that it is your company that created this [CONFIDENTIAL], and was ordered not to sell it publicly. It is of my understanding that you have illegally been doing so. Therefore, it would not be surprising if it is revealed that you were behind these thieves, whomever they may be. I am giving your foundation 24 hours to reply to this document with an explanation, unless you would like me to create suspicion of your company when I speak at my press conference about this issue in 2 days. For the sake of your company's profits, which seems to be all you care about, I suggest you choose the former.

Regards,
Ramsey MacDonald

Headquarters of Yerkes-Tesla Foundation, New York City

On the 23th floor of "Legacy Tower" meeting of the Board of directors was taking place. President Manfried Watts, a stout portly man, totally bald and with thick brown mustache, adorning his round face read the letter of British PM to group of people. Several murmured expressions of outrage could be heard.

Yerkes-Tesla foundation's board of directors had 5 members- President Watts was inventor himself, dedicated to development of Electro-Brains. Harris Yerkes, distant cousin of one of the founders decided to continue his cousin's career in public transit. Edwin Longfellow was another industrialist who owned "Longfellow Solutions" chemical industry based in Kentucky. There was Nikola Tesla himself, oldest member and youngest member, aspiring aeronautical inventor Howard Hughes. They were mostly unanonimous in their recent decisions and most of the assumed it was going to stay this way as long as Telsa was alive. The aging Serbian scientist still spent most of his days in his Colorado Springs laboratory working on new patents but he was decisive voice of authority if any kind of dispute broke out.

Harris Yerkes spoke: "This is outrageous accusation. Accusing us of development of secret weapons. We were the ones that always protested use of technology for anything else but peace."

"And to think that they can blackmail us in such way!" Tesla spoke firmly. "This British PM seem to have lost his mind. It's a plain provocation, nothing else. And we will make sure it's adressed the right way."

The 30 of July 1929

To the Ramsey MacDonald Prime Minister of UK

Esteemed Sir

We had received your letter and we are sorry to say that we don't appreciate the tone or accusations voiced in this letter. First of all, projects on which our Foundation is curremtly working on are peacuful in nature and Yerkes-Tesla never produced weapons or machines of war. It is possible that some aspects of our advanced technology were later used by some government for production of this machine gun you are talking about, but no Yerkes Tesla funds were directed to such projects and none of our scientists worked on it.

From the day it was founded Yerkes- Tesla always promoted peaceful use of advaned technology that would benefit to all of the mankind - the national governments often subverted our goal, so this kind of attack is a perfect example of hypocrisy. We can assure you that your letter and this answer of yours will go public, because we intend to show the world and your voters how far are you ready to go in your attempts to insult honorable name of businessmen and scientist that run Yerkes- Tesla Foundation.

Regards
Board of directors of YTF.

Prime Minister MacDonald sat comfortably on his green leather sofa, across from newly inaugurated President of the United States of America, Herbert C. Hoover. To be frank, the British prime minister didn't have much respect for the new president, but he had requested his help promptly after receiving the impertinent reply from the YTF. He had only one day before his press conference, and already his letter was going to go public. Instead of having the intended effect, his letter had been political suicide.

"So, you see, President Hoover, the YTF has threatened to release my letter, very soon. Can't you threaten them with an increase in tax, or some stricter regulations on it? After all, the bloody business is an American enterprise." Says PM MacDonald.

"It's unfortunate, Mr. MacDonald, but I'm afraid I have as many domestic issues on my plate as you do. For god's sake, I'm dealing with a Depression started in America! Besides, regulating the YTF would be against my platform. I ran as a pro-business candidate. I am a former businessman."

Prime Minister MacDonald took out his handkerchief and wiped his forehead. "Can you at least stop the letter from being released?"

"No can do, chief. Freedom of the Press and speech! Can't infringe on it, pal. Good luck!"

And with that, President Hoover promptly and rudely left the room.

"Let me be very clear, Roger: You are going to legally visit Scandinavia. I managed to get a guy to put a tracker on those two knuckleheads. Did they really think they could steal the weapon for themselves? Right in front of Thomas Edison's nose? Hah! After you go to Scandinavia, you'll find the two petty thieves. If any problems arise, you use this new invention of mine:

"What does it do, Mr. Edison?"

"It can drain the electricity from the source of any building's power. They won't find you in the darkness. Meanwhile, I'll be using the divide and conquer strategy. The International community suspects the British Government of stealing the weapon, the Brits suspect that scum Tesla, and the Americans suspect the Scandinavians. While they're all bickering and pointing fingers, I'll steal the weapon from under their noses. And then, I can utilize that weapon's technology for....my plans." He snickers.

"Yes Mr. Edison." Says Roger, the thug.

"Don't fail me, mmm? If you succeed, I'll pay you promptly. If you don't, god help you."

"Excuse me..... I need to get to my seat.... Thanks...." The man took his seat. "Damn these players are good. Seriously they should consider making a professional baseball league."
"Look, Kawasaki, these are good players. But the success of the Tokyo Baseball can't just be replicated. It'll take lots of work. Beside so lots of big cities have problems, take Shanghai....."
"Oh! Did you see the newspapers. They said that this huge robbery happened. Some artifact got stolen or something like. They say it was some British or French soldiers."
"Bullshit! That's just the papers, the robbery just happened near those districts. Probably just another big Gang. The paper said they'd been fighting all over them for a whi..."
"Salted Edamame! Salted Edamame anyone!?"
"Oh right here!" Said Kawasaki.
"200 Yen!" Said the Vendor.
The exchange occurred and the conversation continued.
"Anyway...Mmmmmm" he stuffed the Edamame in his mouth. "I..."
"Homerun!!!!!!" screamed the crowd. As a ball soars over the stands into the street behind the park.

"Move out, Move out!" The soldiers jumped into their cockpits. "Alright, if this wasn't a drill you would have failed. Seriously 1:45 Seconds before ready for take off. Better! Come on. Go eat lunch. We'll do fitness training afterwards."
The men left disappointed. He knew that if they weren't ready in a weak. Then they wouldn't be ready for the mobilization. Troops were already slowly moving to new positions, who were they mobilizing against. He didnt know maybe it was a show off strength. He just didn't know. He had a headache. So he decided to take a break and just eat lunch.

"I am sorry, Secretary Henderson. I cannot help you. You are the Foreign Secretary, you must take care of your own problems. Now, I must excuse myself. I am getting late for a class —"

"You must help us, Professor Clarke! The country needs you! Prime Minister MacDonald needs you! At least see if you can find a way to locate the weapon!"

"I am sorry, but I'm a professor of engineering at Cambridge University, not a Nikola Tesla! Now, if you please —"

"You're a professor at one of the most prestigious and best universities in the world, especially at the sciences! This college has so many notable alumni, at least get me in touch with one of them —"

"FINE! Jospeh Larmor was an excellent student at St.John's. Heard of him?"

"Vaguely."

"He studied physics here, at Cambridge, and has made breakthroughs in understanding electricity and electron theory of matter; he's a contemporary of Tesla. However, instead of starting his own company, he took to teaching at Cambridge."

"He teaches here?"

"Of course! Mathematics. You'll find him either teaching at the Maths department, or he's hobnobbing with great minds at the Royal Society of London. Now may I take your leave?"

"Yes, thank you very much! I hope he can locate the weapon!"

Roger scurried through the streets of Copenhagen. He took a glance at Edison's tracker. The three thugs were in A.X.E. The tallest building in Denmark. Not to mention the most heavily guarded one.

Roger pulled his hat over his head and straightened his flowing trench coat. He casually strolled over to a phone booth.

"Boss, I'm here. Yup. Right outside A.X.E. You bet your ass I'll steal that shit."

He puts down the phone, and slips into the building. Gunshots are heard. People scream and scram. Minutes later, Roger re emerges from the building, unscathed. With the weapon in his duffel bag, he leaps into a private jet promptly sent by Mr. Edison, and vanishes into the skies...

"Henry, you're the Secretary of State, man. We have to find the whereabouts of that dratted weapon!" Shouts President Herbert Hoover.

Henry Lewis Stimson, Secretary of State, looks at the stout president's unruffled, round face which bore a heavy scowl, and replied calmly:

"Herbert, oh Herb. I know where it is. Believe me, that weapon hasn't left the Settlement!"

"You don't understand, Henry! That weapon is of severe importance! It doesn't matter where it is! That isn't any old assault coil. If properly utilized, I believe that could drain the power of one whole city! I didn't tell the British. It's fine if the blame is in their backs. But we need that weapon!"

"Ok, I'll see what I can do. Maybe send in some spies to retrieve it. We'll see."

ROGUE GUNMEN IN DOWNTOWN COPENHAGEN - 6 CONFIRMED DEAD

COPENHAGEN - The Copenhagen Police has announced this morning that the yesterday afternoon at about 14:00 local time, three unknown gunmen attacked the city towers, firing indiscriminately at the civilians present. 5 died immediately at the scene, with one more receiving severe injuries that she would eventually die from at a nearby clinic.

The identity of the gunmen, who have not been apprehended and is believed to have escaped Scandinavian territory, is known to Border Control, but police believes that these identities may be aliases. The perpetrators are believed to be American in nationality, and the Foreign Office has already submitted descriptions and known aliases of the three gunmen to the League of Nations with the request that these men be extradited to Scandinavia to face trial for their crimes should they ever be found.

The object of the crime appeared to have been theft, and the gunmen succeeded in robbing the towers of several boxes of electrical and mechanical components. The Copenhagen Police stated that it is not believed that the gunmen has achieved the objectives of their incident, noting that it is unlikely that what was stolen was what the terrorists were intending to steal, and has further stated that they believe that these terrorists were part of a broader organisation in an effort to acquire whatever they were seeking, and were not working independently.

"This incident has been a most heinous act," responded Statsminister Hansson in a press conference last evening. "Nothing can justify the indiscriminate killing of women and children that these terrorists committed to advance their interest in crime, and the Scandinavian Commonwealth will pursue these perpetrators to the fullest possible extent, and administer Scandinavian justice." He further added, however, that "all responses by the Scandinavian Commonwealth will follow strictly the letter of the law" with "no retributive measures" and that "innocent Americans going about their affairs in the Scandinavian Commonwealth has nothing to fear from the Commonwealth's investigations."

Council Room, Rådshuset,
Stockholm, Scandinavian Commonwealth,
Two days after the Copenhagen incident

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT --------------------------------

Honourable Chairman, respected Members of the Council, ladies and gentlemen of the Scandinavian Commonwealth, greetings.

I stand here before you today to address a problem that has always plagued the Scandinavian Commonwealth: our openness to foreigners of poor credentials, or often enough no credentials at all. Today, any man, from any corner of the world, can, bearing nothing more than a passport issued by some government or another that may or may not be entirely legitimate, find himself a home within the Scandinavian Commonwealth.

After what happened in Copenhagen two days ago, I do not believe I would have to explain why that is problematic.

A member of a terrorist organisation should never have even been allowed to enter Scandinavia, much less be permitted to leave the country after such a brazen terrorist attack.
No man affiliated with a person as suspect as Edison should have been permitted to enter the country with merely a passport, nor should the borders have stayed open after the attack. The Copenhagen police failed to even put an international travel ban for potential suspects present at the scene after the incident. This represents a massive policy failure, and should be addressed as soon as possible.

The proposal that our party has put forth for deliberation will address this failure. By demanding that all non-citizens arriving in Scandinavia from abroad acquire proper documentation of their identity and purpose of visit and continue to regularly renew such paperwork during their stay in the Commonwealth, the Scandinavian government will be able to monitor in much greater detail activities engaged in by foreign residents and visitors in Scandinavia, and consequently be able to identify suspect activity much more effectively.

No Scandinavian should ever have to fear for his safety in a restaurant, on the street, in his home, or during work. No Scandinavian deserves to have death visited upon him by a foreign stranger that he cannot protect himself from and does not even know! With both terrorist organisations and foreign states seeking to undermine the Scandinavian Commonwealth, stricter border control is necessary for the preservation of the freedom and security of our brother peoples.

I hope that everyone gathered here will support the measures proposed.

Thank you very much.

"...is something wrong, Johanna?"

"I'm... I'm just concerned. The towers... this attack..."

Johanna paused, looking back down at her soup. She was a slow eater at the best of times; it was starting to cool quite a bit. There was silence in the room, except for the barely audible hum of the device, which they have stowed away in the basement. They were trying hard to sell it, but buyers were hard to contact anonymously.

"My twin sister works there, you know? She's a clerk at the center tower. I wonder if she is alright."

"Were you close to her?"

At that, she finally broke out.

"Are, Sven! Not were! I am close to her! I got a telegram from her last week, even. She'll be okay, right? Lots of people work in the towers, and only six died... so... probably? I hope? She's okay..."

With that, silence reigned again. Johanna shoved another spoonful of soup down her.

"...I think she'll be alright. You're sister is a hardy woman. I remember her well. Sigrid, right?"

"That's her."

What little appetite Johanna had at the beginning of dinner was long gone. She rose to put her plates away, and Sven pushed their chairs in back under the table, returning to the little messy corner that he called his office.

"Nothing to do but wait, is there?"

"Pre-industrial military thought has been about the accomplishment of one or two victories: using the army to capture the enemy's cities, or using the navy to starve the enemy's cities. But no military will survive for long without effectively grasping the newly emerging third way of victory: using the air force to make the enemy's cities cease to exist."
- Torsten Friis (1914), then Swedish Air Force

Scandinavia's New Army Reforms, 1921 and onwards

Introduction

The Scandinavian Armed Forces has made several drastic revisions in its military structure and doctrine in the 1920s, aimed primarily at adapting the Scandinavian Armed Forces to what Chief Friis of the Scandinavian Air Force has once described as the "incredible pace of industrialised warfare." The revisions are collectively referred to as the New Army Reforms, which has by and large accomplished two major aims: improvements in internal communications, and the tight integration of the air force to the rest of the Scandinavian military. Although the effectiveness of the new military doctrines have never been seen in battle against another industrialised power, most observers agree that the aggressive pace of the reforms, kept up throughout the entirety of the '20s, have left Scandinavia with the most flexible and mobile military in the world.

Causes

Although the New Army Reforms did not begin until 1921, certain factors in play before that time contributed heavily to the decision of the Scandinavian Armed Forces to undertake this reform and to the sheer pace of the reforms once it began. Without these factors, it is questionable whether the New Army Reforms would have been possible or, even if possible, effective.

Image
Propaganda calling for Swedish volunteers, 1917
The first and perhaps the most important factor is the abolishment of conscription in Scandinavia in 1919. The number of soldiers available to the Scandinavian Armed Forces shrank drastically. This created a strong necessity to produce force multipliers, or means of allowing a small military to be as effective as a larger one, which forced the Scandinavian High Command to introduce innovative doctrines and equipment that they have not yet otherwise considered in order to make the small Scandinavian military competitive. Furthermore, the abolishment of conscription freed up a tremendous amount of military resources. Without the necessity to feed, clothe, house, and arm tens of thousands of conscripts every year, the Armed Forces had the resources necessary to commit to some highly expensive ventures. In many ways, ironically, the downsizing of the Scandinavian Armed Forces provided both the necessity and the means of building a much more effective military force.

The second and perhaps equally as important factor is the rapid advancement of technology, including military technology, in the late 19th and early 20th century. Military aeronautics, armoured vehicles, wireless communications, poison gas, electronic mass production, and airships were all introduced to Europe in the years between 1890 to 1920. New technology enabled the use of new tactics, around which new doctrines could be created. Because of Scandinavia's comparatively high military spending when compared to the number of soldiers it actually fields, the Scandinavian Armed Forces were always faster than other militaries in adopting these latest equipments, and therefore has had a longer period of time to establish these new doctrines. This was especially so because during the chaos of the Great War and its aftermath, many of the European great powers had to dedicate huge resources that might otherwise have contributed to innovation to simply maintaining their massive conscripted armies.

The third factor is the Finnish War of Independence, 1917-1920. Although officially, Scandinavia remained a neutral party to the war between the Finnish revolutionaries and the newly emerged Soviet Union, unofficially, thousands of Scandinavian citizens, including many reservist or retired soldiers and officers of the Scandinavian Armed Forces, volunteered to fight in favour of Finnish independence in the difficult years after the Great War. This resulted in the introduction of a great deal of first-hand experience in a highly mobile war where communication and infrastructural difficulties seriously constrained the effectiveness of military units. The natural result was a growing perception, within the military, of a strong necessity to solve what many returning volunteers saw as flaws in the Scandinavian military.

The fourth and final factor is the creation of a unified Scandinavian military force in 1914. This resulted in a haphazard merger of three different military forces with different customs, doctrines, cultures, and traditions. The new military force, with no established traditions, naturally had a much smaller conservative impetus to preserve those traditions and was much more open to the establishment of unconventional doctrines and structures. Free and open discussion about what sort of traditions and doctrines should be introduced into the military, something that is usually not possible in the rigid hierarchical structures of most modern militaries, resulted in the rapid adoption of those doctrines made possible by the advancement of technology.

1. Aerial Infantry and the Quest for Air Superiority

Those changes in the Scandinavian military that are now called the New Army Reforms began with the Scandinavian Air Force's decision to purchase ten 230-ton commercial airships from Kongsberg Aerospace and, instead of spreading these out across supply elements across the Scandinavian Armed Forces as would have been usual by Great War standards, simply creating a new transport wing with these ten airships. Collectively capable of transporting a brigade of infantry, along with its support elements and equipment, from Bergen to Viipuri in a day, the new transport wing gave the Scandinavian Army unprecedented mobility. It was not very long before High Command realised the strategic potential of such capabilities. The two regiments of Guards that the Scandinavian Army maintained, considered somewhat of a relic of the past at that time, was given a new role. It was a role never seen before in the history of warfare: that of aeronautical infantry.

Chief Torsten Friis of the Scandinavian Air Force famously remarked in 1921 that "one cannot build trenches in the sky." Consequently, he believed, the sky presents the ultimate potential for unstoppable flanking and infiltration manoeuvres. The reformed Guard regiments were given landing capability. Theoretically, in time of war, the Guard regiments could, under intense air support from both the transport wing itself and the rest of the Scandinavian Air Force, conduct a rapid landing in hostile territory, and create a pocket of friendly territory deep behind enemy lines, wreaking havoc with enemy communications and logistics. Such a pocket could then be supplied and maintained by that very same transport wing and, when deemed no longer necessary, be evacuated again by air. At the time, this was a revolutionary doctrine.

"Danmark," the second aerial fortress of the samväldet-class, delivered 1924
The potential represented by this new means of waging warfare was so great, in fact, that the Scandinavian Armed Forces deemed it absolutely unacceptable that Scandinavia did not possess the means to protect itself should the enemy use this very same doctrine against it. The fact that no other nation had that doctrine or could use it effectively was, ultimately, of no concern to the Scandinavian Air Force. The Scandinavian Council approved a massive increase to the budget of the Scandinavian Air Force, at the cost of the Navy. Holding air superiority in any war became a priority. The Scandinavian Air Force grew from 47 combat craft in 1919 through 260 combat craft in 1923, then again to 510 combat craft in 1925.

The greatest drawback of the transport wing, however, was its vulnerability. Relying as it did on large helium balloons for lift, the transport airships were vulnerable from attack by even those enemies that could not seriously contest Scandinavian air superiority. The solution to this came in the form of custom-ordered Samväldet-class aerial fortresses. They were heavily armoured vessels capable of sustaining its own lift via electric means, by which Scandinavia could project with relative safety air superiority deep into hostile terrain. Consequently, since the transport wing would stay on the fortress during the transport and be used only in liftoff and landing, the risk from interception by enemy aircraft and anti-air artillery was dramatically reduced.

Over the years, both the size and quantity of the transport airships commissioned by the Scandinavian Air Force grew, and as of 1930 stands at 38,400 tons of total lift capacity - enough to transport an entire infantry division with ample supplies if need be.

2. An Army on Wheels and Spjutspets Doctrine

At the same time, mobility on the ground was greatly increased. No army could be useful if it could not be present at the location of the battle. With the development of faster, oil or electricity powered warships and, even more concerningly, durable airships, the Scandinavian military leadership began to realise the futility of defending Scandinavia's long coastline with traditional infantry and artillery. The coastlines were painfully long, and no amount of air superiority could repel an enemy landing once it was already on Scandinavian territory. Consequently, the Scandinavian Armed Forces made the decision to completely motorise the coastal artillery brigades.

Image
Stridsvagn m/23, one of Scandinavia's early armour
After a series of contests, in 1924 a design for a 175mm howitzer that could be carried on a standard four-wheeled military cargo truck was developed, and production began the very next year. The idea was that no ship could approach well-prepared coastal defences armed with ferocious artillery pieces and, if the artillery pieces themselves were mobile, then any stretch of suitable coast could be prepared into such defences.

At the same time, the idea of motorised infantry was developed overseas, and spread into Scandinavian military thought. The strategic mobility provided by a rapid infantry army in being able to attack unexpectedly and avoid hostile breakthroughs could not be underestimated. Furthermore, the superiority of British and French armour to their Scandinavian equivalents greatly concerned the Scandinavian military high command. The possibility of a lightning armoured campaign overwhelming Scandinavia's ability to react to such an attack remained. Although Scandinavia's growing air force provided one solution to this problem, the Scandinavian High Command nonetheless decided to reform the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions into Motorised Divisions. Several real changes to the division's equipment was made to accompany the name change. Over 1923-1926, the entire army was motorised. Infantry and all of its support elements could simply be loaded on a truck and relocated elsewhere. Armoured cars were also provided for lead elements that may have to move under hostile fire. To maximise the offensive potential of these new and mobile divisions, what little armour the Scandinavian Army possessed were concentrated into these two divisions in 1925 and when rocket artillery was first introduced to Scandinavia in 1928, these divisions had the first priority on the allocation of this new weapon.

The new equipment introduced into the Army resulted in the creation of new doctrines. The Spjutspets doctrine focused on the crushing concentration of intense firepower. Instead of spreading offensive elements across the front, offensive elements like rocket artillery and armour would be concentrated into their own brigades, which could be used as spearheads to destroy a limited section of the enemy front, leading to a breakthrough and hopefully an encirclement. At the same time, the aerial fortresses and the transport wings could be used to disrupt enemy operations deep into enemy territory and establish pockets of friendly territory whenever necessary. The result aimed for was an incredibly mobile and brutally rapid campaign that would utterly overwhelm the enemy's ability to respond through mass encirclements and severe disruptions of enemy communications, logistics, and leadership.

3. Communications: A War of Information

Both the development of aerial warfare and highly mobile ground warfare could only be effective if certain conditions were met: that the involved units themselves could actively react to the rapidly developing situation. Speed was wasted if the units did not know themselves where they would be the most effective. The Scandinavian High Command, therefore, was greatly concerned with improving the military's ability to rapidly adapt to shifting circumstances.

The first few policies passed to that effect were purely mechanical. Each regiment was provided radio equipment in 1922. As the years passed by and smaller, cheaper, and more effective communication equipment developed, smaller and smaller units came to boast their own communications. Each unit on the field could keep their headquarters informed of the latest situation on a virtually minute-to-minute basis, and the headquarters could therefore co-ordinate separate units to accomplish certain very temporary goals on a minute-to-minute basis.

The effectiveness of artillery, especially, was drastically improved. With any company in the four Scandinavian divisions able to call for divisional artillery support and reporting the latest assumed locations of the enemy, Scandinavian artillery would never have to stay idle for lack of targets.

There was, however, a certain limit to how much operational efficiency could be achieved only through equipment and protocol. By 1926, the very way the Scandinavian Armed Forces operated was beginning to change to adapt to highly mobile warfare. To prepare against decapitating strikes, the structure of communications were themselves changed from hierarchical to interconnected. Regiments did not just report to the brigade headquarters, but also kept in communications with the division headquarters, as well as other regiments both in that same brigade and elsewhere. Lines of communication could form based on actual proximity instead simply by some theoretical organisation chart.

Furthermore, army protocol was changed in 1926 and again in 1927 to permit greater autonomy to officers. Officers were, unlike in earlier times, informed in great detail as to the purpose of the task that they were ordered to accomplish. If an opportunity to accomplish that task or its purpose more effectively at a lower cost emerged, they were encouraged to act upon it instead of waiting for many minutes or even an hour for permission from headquarters, by which time that opportunity could very well have disappeared. Initiative, intelligence, and creativity became the sought-after trait for Scandinavia's military officers, rather than simple obedience. Military culture changed, almost paralleling the liberalisation and democratisation of Scandinavian society itself.

4. The Third Path to Victory: Strategic Warfare

Honorable Member of Parliament Baldwin of the United Kingdom once remarked in 1928, after reviewing the latest airship-bombers of the Royal Air Force that “there is no power on earth that can save the average man on the street from being bombed." The same nature of the air as a battlefield - the fact that one cannot build trenches on it - that allows the deployment of aeronautical infantry also brings every city to the forefront of the frontlines.

The concept of strategic bombing - aerial bombing aimed at reducing the enemy's abilities to wage war by damaging the enemy's centres of industry, leadership, population, and culture - is neither new nor unique to Scandinavia. It was first used on a mass scale, in fact, in the Great War as early as 1915. Early strategic bombing was, however, relatively ineffective. Although the strategic bombing conducted by both sides against major cities caused mass terror, killed thousands of civilians, and contributed heavily to the cultural horrors of the war, in terms of destroying enemy industry, leadership, and infrastructure it was relatively impotent.

Image
Strategic bombing was used to great effect during the Second Sino-Japanese War
Like many other militaries in Europe, however, the Scandinavian military leadership realised the long-term potential of the concept of strategic bombers. With the growth of the aeronautical industry as well as the steady development of 2-engine and later 4-engine airplanes, it became possible to deliver heavier and more advanced munitions against enemy centres of population. This was especially so after the Scandinavian Air Force decided in 1927 to adapt its aerial fortresses to be capable of bombing and close air support if necessary as well as being used as carriers.

The Scandinavian Air Force also saw the large potential in another invention of the Great War: poison gas. It was theorised that, considering Scandinavia's likely air superiority in any war against any of its immediate neighbours, there was great potential in combining the technology of poison gas with the doctrine of strategic bombing to effectively paralyze the enemy's capacity for military production. Aerial attacks using poison gas against centres of population, it was theorised, would effectively neutralise both the enemy's ability to effectively defend that centre of population and the ability to produce war materiel in that centre of population. Naturally, poison gas was effectively integrated into the Scandinavian Air Force for use in both strategic bombing and aerial landings. Although, with the ascension of the Scandinavian Commonwealth to the Geneva Protocol on 1928, Scandinavia effectively scrapped all doctrines and tactical plans that required the use of poison gas and destroyed most of the 37,000 tons in its stockpile, Scandinavia does continue to maintain thousands of tons of poison gas in its armament stockpiles for purposes of deterrence.

Another tool in Scandinavia's arsenal of strategic weapons was the regiment of Strategic Artillery, created in 1926. The Strategic Artillery's mandate in wartime, according to its charter, is to "utilise artillery pieces of very high range" to deliver "destructive agents" into "hostile centres of production." It is, in effect, an attempt by the Scandinavian High Command to produce the effects of strategic bombing in conditions where using the Air Force for such a purpose becomes impractical or impossible. The 21 225mm cannon pieces in the Strategic Artillery regiment has a range varying from 142km to 190km, putting within range key cities such as Leningrad in the Soviet Union, Hamburg in the German Reich, or Tallinn in Estonia within range from artillery pieces stationed within Scandinavian territory.

The New Army Reforms of the 1920s, inspired by the rapid technological advancement of the late 19th and early 20th century, resulted in the creation of an incredibly mobile and tightly co-ordinated military, backed by heavy air power. Throughout the entirety of its reforms, the Scandinavian High Command was highly desirous of shifting the focus of warfare back from attrition to manoeuvre to minimise Scandinavia's chief disadvantage in wartime - its small population and its consequently small ability to reinforce its existing army. Due to this concern, with highly mobile units at its disposal and with the extreme shortage of manpower its chief concern, the Scandinavian High Command developed doctrines that utterly overturns the established wisdom of the Great War and adopted weapons to support that doctrinal thought and, in doing so, created a military unlike any other.

Many of the changes made in the New Army Reforms, it is hoped by the Scandinavian High Command, would result in the Scandinavian Armed Forces being able to rapidly attain victory over its enemy with minimal losses, while avoiding the trench battles of heavy attrition that dominated the Great War. Spjutspets doctrine, made possible by unprecedented air and ground mobility, could theoretically push the focus of warfare away from the front and therefore avoid long engagements through hostile fortifications and military assets, instead rapidly overwhelming the enemy by creating a situation that it cannot respond effectively to. Strategic warfare presented means to destroy the enemy while it was still in the recruiting centres, the assembly lines, and the airport hangars instead of having to destroy it in the battlefield. Better communications, then, was a natural necessity for this new, rapid, and mobile form of warfare that the Scandinavian High Command envisioned.

Reaction from other countries have leaned towards the negative. Although strategic warfare is now a strong consideration with many European militaries and tanks have entered mainstream military thought as a means of advancing through hostile positions, the assumption of rapid, overwhelming warfare where victory was determined by the speed of manoeuvres and the robustness of communications around which the Scandinavian Armed Forces have based their entire doctrine is harshly questioned by many other nations. Many military experts believe that this is a fruitless venture, nothing more than an expensive fantasy of the Scandinavians. They claim that when war visits Europe again, the Scandinavian Armed Forces will find itself bogged down in the frontlines just like every major power found themselves in 1914. On the other hand, many other military experts believe that new technologies must necessarily reshape the ways of warfare, and that the Scandinavians have discovered how to fight wars of the future. Until the Scandinavian Armed Forces is tested in battle against another industrialised power, it is difficult to know which side is more right.

But what cannot be doubted is that regardless of whether the rapid and mobile form of warfare envisioned by the Scandinavians ever come to be, the New Army Reforms have still left Scandinavia with the most adaptive, flexible, and well co-ordinated army in not just the European Continent, but quite possibly the world. Meanwhile, the reforms continue.

Edison sipped his cup of coffee, and, while grinding his teeth, forcefully read the front headline of the Nordens Nyheter. He crumpled the paper in his fist, whipped in half, and chucked It into the wastebasket next to him. Just then, Roger sauntered through the doorway, looking extremely pleased with himself.

"Watcher, Boss! How's the morn going for you?"

"Dimwit! You've got my bloody name all over the papers! I'm the prime suspect! After all these years undercover, a halfwit, dumbass little rascal —"

"Ay, but Boss, I got the artifact! Just see:"

He hands over an electric, bulky object.

"Great! Come over here, a bit closer, Roger my man!"

Glowing ear to ear, Roger strolled over to Edison. He failed to notice the cocked pistol behind Edison's back.

"Just a little closer, so I can give you your reward..." and with that, Edison shot Roger dead.

"THIS PILE OF SHIT IS USELESS! THIS ISN'T THE WEAPON!!"

Revolutionaries of India, 1900 onwards

Introduction

The Indians have always been a brave, bold and fiery people, actively attempting to free themselves from the oppressive British forever, despite not having access to the plethora of advanced tech weapons utilized by Europe and the rest of the world. As the freedom fighters liked to quote, "Faith is the bird that feels the light while the dawn is still dark." They courageously barge into the fight, with shouts of "Vande Mataram!" (I bow down to you, Mother!) and "Jai Hind!" (Victory to India!") to liberate their homeland from all colonizers and evil.

1900-1908 - Start of Revolutions, Bengali Origins

Bengal is famous for being the home of countless Revolutionaries, at this time the most notable being Bagha Jatin, Khudiram Bose and Aurobindo Ghosh, amongst other bravehearts. These bold souls gave up all for their country, despite not owning much and nit having many weapons to fight the superpower that was the British Empire. Using their scientific minds they used to manufacture bombs at home, or secretly while working at their normal jobs in factories. ImageBottle Bomb

Khudiram Bose, only 18, and Aurobindo Ghosh were soon brutally beaten and arrested by the British for the Alipore Bomb Case, when they were discovered manufacturing bombs out of house materials. Meanwhile, leaders of the Jugantar Association, a revolutionary party, like Bagha Jatin, were arrested for murdering British leaders. These freedom fighters were soon murdered by being fired at by electro magnetic cannons, meeting the most brutal and revolting deaths ever.

World War 1 - The Indo-German Movement

The Indo-German movement, also referred to as the Hindu-German Conspiracy or the Ghadar movement (or Ghadr conspiracy), was formulated during World War I between Indian Nationalists in India, United States and Germany, the Irish Republicans, and the German Foreign office to initiate a Pan-Indian rebellion against The British Empire with German support between 1914 and 1917, during World War I. The most famous amongst a number of plots planned to foment unrest and trigger a Pan-Indian mutiny in February 1915, in the British Indian Army from Punjab to Singapore, to overthrow The Brits in the Indian subcontinent. This conspiracy was ultimately thwarted at the last moment as British intelligence successfully infiltrated the Ghadarite movement and arrested key figures. The failed Singapore mutiny remains a famous part of this plot while mutinies in other smaller units and garrisons within India were also crushed.

However, during this brief alliance with the Germans and other Europeans, many Indian revolutionaries, originally from small slums in Bengal or South India, suddenly gained access to things like radio and other tech further developed by the YTF. The freedom fighters utilized radio controlled planes to spy on the British. All of a sudden, the Britishers found themselves one step behind the Indians.

Central Assembly Bomb Case - Present (1929)

This is where the revolution for Independence really became advanced and high tech for the Indians. Armed with electro magnetic rifles and cannons, Baghat Singh and Batukeshwar Datta, along with an army, chucked an experimental electrical combustible bomb into the British assembly house. They robbed the members sitting there, getting the cash they needed to further develop their weapons in the near future...

TRANSCRIPT: PM PRESS CONFERENCE

My British comrades,

Today I speak to a crowd where suspicion, confusion and anger reigns. I speak to a crowd who appears to be bogged down by the obstacles in front of us. I speak to a crowd who seems...defeated. But you know this isn't true. I would like to prove to the skeptical international community that the British Empire isn't intimidated by their accusations, that the Empire is as United as ever, that the King has not given up in his mission to guide a country that is leading in business, leading in militarization, leading in safety and wealth. This, we have not been doing for a long time. We have been losing to America in business, losing to Scandinavia in militarization, losing to Japan in wealth. But, I promise you, we'll be victorious. We'll be victorious, but only by being vigilant. And, my friends, vigilance flows in the British Blood! [Magnificent Applause, Standing ovation]

So, my allies, don't be afraid, don't be susceptible to the lies of the world. We know who's the culprit in this weapon business. We know that the Yerkes-Tesla Foundation can't get away with this! Yes, it's true. I am very sure, and many agree, that behind their lies of maintaining peace, the YTF is really illegally selling these experimental weapons to thugs and gangsters. Not unusual of a business. They only work for profits.

So, to conclude this conference, I'd like to just say: we won't get anywhere by being suspicious of each other. We need to stick together. We need loyalty. We need bravery. We need vigilance. For, remember, in this land of trouble, there's always light. There's never a hopeless case without hope.

Tesla stood before the shining TV screen watching the report from the Ramsey Macdonald's press conference. There was worried frown on his face, frown that added to the layers of fault lines made there by age. He rose from his armchair and walked to the window. His wireless phone lay on the small end-table there. He rarely used it these days but this time he used it to call Manfried Watts:

"Watts are you watching this?" old man spoke abruptly, as soon as he heard Watts receiver being raised. "This guy. This son of the devil... he wants to paint us as some kind of threat to the world peace."

"Papa Nick,I don't think he knows what's he doing. Everyone got worked up about that weapon deal. I believe he had his fingers in the pie and is now looking for a scapegoat. I'm gonna call British press tommorow and tell them every damn muckraker can come and check our projects. We never built weapons and never will."

"I don't like it. I don't appreciate some polititian taking a crap on everything we did. It happened once and it was a bloodbath."

"Well there's nothing more we could do. If he keeps up with that he will draw condemnation of scientific community upon himself. And we will eventually pull most of our projects out of UK. I got another deal going for government of Germany. They got hit by this crisis pretty hard and our deal will feed many mouths."

"Alright. You'll tell me in the morning. I'm going to work a bit now."

"Take care Papa Nick."

From Yerkes-Tesla Foundation
To: Government of Republic of Germany

Esteemed dignitaries
We have a serious business proposition for your government. Our foundation is planning to finance a new prototype- a submarine engine using electricity as main power source. Those submarines would be great for exploration of deep sea marine life and they could refuel using Tesla wireless energy transfer every time they resurface. Our "Nautilus" projects is meant to be conducted in discreete shipyard in country in which such endaour would be viable. If you would allow us to conduct our new submarine propulsion experiments in our Baltic ports, we are certain that we could create at least 50 000 work places and revitalize your economy. Your scientists will be welcome to take part in the project and willbe fully paid by Yerkes-Tesla Foundation. Also, we are prepared to give you a loan of 30 million dollars that should be spend on modernization of your shipyards.

"Professor Larmor...this...all of this...it's incredible! Revolutionary! Mind-blowing! Look...look at this, you've made ray guns, particle beam cannons...plasma weaponry! My goodness, Tesla never even thought of utilizing high energy ionized gas! You have to start a company!"

"Secretary Henderson, brilliant minds often like to keep their work...to themselves." Joseph Larmor smiled.

His vast office was chock full of technology - apart from incredible, telescope image enhancing computers, there were the weapons that Lewis Henderson described, as well as a plethora of vehicles run on high-power electricity.

"Now," Professor Larmor continued, "you came to me to track a weapon..."

"Forget about the damned weapon! We don't need it! But that bullshit company, Yerkes-Tesla, they've apparently made a deal with the Germans...providing them with some stuff, I don't know what. It'll leave Britain behind in the dust. The YTF has already retracted all projects from our nation. Our army, usually pretty high tech, won't be a match for Germany. But with an undiscovered mind like yours...what discoveries have you made as of recent?" Henderson demanded.

Larmor, looking only too pleased, replied, "Well, I figured...you know those EB computers, right? They run on a whole lotta data. That company practically relies on the EBs. But, I've created a new concept. I like to call it "Cyber Warfare." I have made very rudimentary, but fast developing discoveries into how to get access to and steal information from those computers through a worldwide network. This design, its only theoretical, but very...plausible. I like to call it...the GlobalNet. And this...this theoretical link between computers can be hacked, and manipulated. Fascinating, isn't it?"

Henderson, jaw wide open, had practically peed himself. "My goodness! We need you on our team, and fast. We'll give you millions in pounds, but in mere days, we'll have ruined that Tesla! Just wait! My goodness, my god. Good heavens! You're a genius! Will you be willing to serve your country, albeit very secretly?"

"Of course, I'll be honored to serve."

"Albert Einstein. It is a pleasure to meet you, my friend." Charles G. Dawes, Vice President of the USA, stuck out his hand to Einstein's. They shook.

"It is of severe surprise to me," Dawes continued, "that such an accomplished and intelligent scientist such as you have not been up to much for the past few years. You received the Nobel Prize only a few years ago, for your theory on the photoelectric effect. And now..."

"Your theory that I haven't been doing much is very incorrect. Vice President Dawes, I've made amazing new discoveries with my photoelectric cell theory. I've created night vision devices, sensors of all kinds...it's quite different."

"Would you be willing to provide this to the government?"

"Unfortunately, no. I can't trust you'll use it for the good of mankind, but rather to create wars. I'm a firm pacifist."

"But, Mr Einstein -"

"I'm sorry, but I won't."

The Republic of Germany

Deutschland Über Alles

The Chancellor of Germany, the former Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenberg stared silently out the window of the few automobiles left on German streets, frowning. Outside the window, German people wearing rags and with dirty faces picked through the rubble of one of the streets of Berlin, looking to scavenge something to sell. Weary faces looked up at the vehicle as it passed, some scowling, some blank eyed.

Hindenberg pulled up to his office in the Reichstag and quickly got out of the car, hurrying up the many stairs, two aides flanking him. " Herr Chancellor, we have recieved a letter from the YTF, it could help Germany!" Hindenberg looked at the aide. " Very good! Take me to it immediately!" The aide rushed Hindenberg to his office where he sat at his desk, ready to reply to the letter.

Gluten Tag freunde! The Republic of Germany has recieved your letter and gratefully accepts on one condition. When the "Nautilus" project is completed, Germany will be given two submarines equipped with the latest underwater warfare weapons. If this is accepted, the German Reoublic will begin preparing a sector of the port of Kiel, the Heaquarters of our battle squadron, to be put aside for your valiant research. The German Republic looks forward to working with the YTF in the present and future for the betterment of both entities.

To your good tidings and health,

Mesage From the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Germany

To-The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

I come to you today with urgent news; my advisors predict that the German republic will collapse by the end of the year into either Communsim or anarchy unless something drastic is changed from the current pace of things. Germany is wrapped in an economic crisis where upwards of half the German population is out of work. Hundreds of thousands clutter the street of our cities. So, I am asking you for immediate economic and monetary support. Unless this can be provided, Germany will fall. Please send immediate support.

To your good tidings and Health,

Paul Von Hindenberg

Courtyard, Tre Kronor airship plant,
Karlstad, Scandinavia,
1930 September 14th

"Vi blir aldrig slav igen!"

Image

Jan Sörensson unfurled the banner from his third floor window. Weighed down by a paperweight sewn into the fabric at the end, it fell cleanly, stopping short about a man's height from the ground. There was little doubt about what it might represent, even though the banner did not have anything on it. Not even a single word. Its bright red colour said it all. Without his cracked and foggy goggles impairing his sight, he could clearly see the storm gathering outside the fences of the factory from his perspective from the third floor.

"Birger! Birger, the strike-breakers are here! Accompanied by the police!"

"Thanks for the heads up, Jan!"

The Great Depression has not been friendly to anyone, least of all the industrial workers scratching a living in the grimey factories. The underside, as it were, hidden by the glamorous shimmer of the new Scandinavia. Trouble was brewing here for at least six months, starting from the day when the plant's owners made the decision to cut the number of workers in the plant by laying off nearly a third of the workingmen manning the assembly lines.

The Chief of the Constabulary stepped out of his long car, his aide holding the door open for him. He sniffed the air, and frowned. To him, this was an annoyance. The constabulary didn't like being called down to the dirty industrial district, and this was especially for its chief. The wind was doing no favours, either - the chief had to hold on to his black police hat to keep it from flying away.

An officer passed the chief an electronic loudspeaker. In that buzzing, whining sound so characteristic of such loudspeakers, the chief began to speak.

"Illegal occupiers, you are surrounded! Leave the building unarmed and with your hands up, immediately!"

Nobody responded but the screams of passing winds. From the courtyard between the fence and the plant itself, Birger adjusted the shoulder straps holding his workpants up, watching the barricade be slowly eroded by the strikebreakers.

The union immediately got to work after the announcement from the planet management, of course. But it was nothing but stalling action. The managers wanted to get rid of the surplus workers, and everybody knew it. When Karlstad took to the streets during the May Day demonstrations to protest declining labour conditions, Arlanda Aerospace responded by shaving the wages of all who participated. Negotiations between management and union fell through two weeks after that, and a general strike was called.

Canisters of tear gas came flying across the barricade. Soon the courtyard was fogged with hazy white smoke, and the rush of men putting on their masks. From above, thought Jan, it is almost like looking at clouds. The calm before the storm, one might be able to say.

Birger had slightly different thoughts. We work with toxic gases all the time, he thought. Especially with this newest line of airships. The police seriously think that a little tear gas can flush us out?

Behind the thick fabric of the mask, Birger broke out into a grin.

A day before the general strike came into effect, Arlanda Aerospace closed down the plant, and dismissed all of its workers. That would put an end to the strike, the management thought. That would be the end to the demonstrations.

But they ignored, to their great detriment, just how dangerous desperate people can truly be. Even mice will attack cats, when they feel cornered enough. Arlanda Aerospace bought themselves a week of peace, until the union moved in and physically occupied the plant. Now, they had the eyes of the nation trained upon them.

Coughing, sneezing. Birger snapped back to attention, and looked around. A couple people had masks that looked slightly strange. Johan...

Is he missing his filter? Christ. The company guys have really been neglecting our safety for months, haven't they? Imagine if we had an industrial accident.

Birger ran over to the panicked man, but it was of no use. Johan ran and ran - anywhere to avoid the smoke. He climbed himself up the barricade, screaming, and... with a flash of blue and a spark of lightning, Johan would never scream again in this life. Everybody looked at the body slumping back towards the ground, shocked.

Then a line of police vehicles rolled over the fence.

POLICE CLASH WITH KARLSTAD STRIKERS - VIOLENCE CONTINUES

Image
KARLSTAD -- After a prolonged period of tensions, the Karlstad constabulary has advanced against the strike and demonstration by the workers of the Tre Kroner manufacturing plant. As of two o'clock in the morning today, the police have advanced into the premises and have captured the supporting facilities as well as the central courtyard, although the police have failed to press their way into the plant itself before they were ordered to cease their advance against the strikers by the Hansson administration.

The confrontation turned violent almost immediately after the beginning of the advance, and 19 of the plant's workers have been shot by the police, despite the Karlstad constabulary not having the authorisation to open fire. It is not known how many of the 19 injured have died. Similarly, it has been reported that during last evening's advance, three police officers have been killed or injured by protesters throwing rocks.

"The officers involved have acted in self-defence," announced the Chief of the Karlstad Constabulary. "The hooligans have acted in a manner that threatened the safety and security of our officers and therefore, in accordance with protocol, the Karlstad Constabulary took measures to secure the lives of its officers and establish order in the area."

Nearby witnesses, however, agree that the police have shot at unarmed protesters before the incident even began, and some claim that the strikers did not act violently until the incident was well underway. The position of the police has been that these witness reports are lacking in key details, due to the general chaos of the scene.

The strikes could not be reached for comment, due to the police restricting access to the site.

Statsminister Hansson has expressed great concern for the situation. "Among the many rights that we have fought for in the past few decades," he noted in an emergency statement released last night, "is the right to peaceably assemble to demand redress for grievances. It is terribly unfortunate that this fundamental political right that all men deserve is still not recognised by certain elements of Scandinavian society."

With the Swedish Industrial Workers' Union threatening to call for a nationwide strike should the issue at Karlstad not be adequately resolved, the government has offered to mediate another round of negotiations between all parties involved.

The situation at Karlstad is, furthermore, rapidly becoming unstable. There is a petition rapidly gaining support demanding the resignation of the Chief of the Karlstad Constabulary. Although the situation at the site itself has calmed somewhat, tensions between the police and the strikers remain very high, and the possibility of another incident cannot be ignored. Furthermore, the local blue-collar community, themselves suffering badly from the economic situation, has gotten very agitated.

Although the Karlstad Constabulary has requested military aid to help suppress the increasingly unstable situation in Karlstad, Supreme Commander Mannerheim has made it very clear that "under no circumstances will the Scandinavian Armed Forces turn the arms of our soldiers against the citizens they exist to defend," further adding that "all present evidence regarding this situation suggests that the strikers are not acting in rebellion against the Scandinavian state."

Council Room, Rådshuset,
Stockholm, Scandinavian Commonwealth,
1930 September 17th

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT --------------------------------

Honourable Chairman, respected Members of the Council, ladies and gentlemen of the Scandinavian Commonwealth, greetings.

The Scandinavian Left Party, of which I am proud to be a member, has always stood for a free, modern, and civilised society in Scandinavia. From the beginnings of the Scandinavian Left Party, dating back to the days when all we had was a movement that went under various national leagues as an assortment of free traders and liberals, we have fought for the liberation of the Scandinavian people from oppressive governance. Our movement has always stood for a Scandinavia where a free man can go about his own personal business without being told what to do by the state.

The approach of the government towards the mediation of this dispute is, therefore, dissatisfying in the extreme to the Scandinavian Left Party. By recognising the Karlstad rioters as a legitimate interested party in this dispute, and even more so by unfairly favouring them during the negotiations, the Hansson administration has made clear its tolerance, if not support, for violent hooliganism. Here, we have a government that states that certain parties have a right to force a contract with another, disinterested party. Here, we have a government that refuses to accept that a changing society must necessarily entail pain to many of its members. Here, we have a government that states clearly for all the world to hear that the Scandinavian government recognises physical occupation of another's property is an acceptable method by which to press a political advantage.

These actions hence stand contrary to our values of a free, modern, and civilised Scandinavia. Although we have so far stood with the Social Democrats in pursuit of political liberalisation, the Scandinavian Left Party cannot accept nor support these actions undertaken by the Hansson administration by continuing our current political co-operation with this administration.

Therefore, it is with great regret that I have to announce here today that the Scandinavian Left Party shall no longer be supporting the Hansson administration, nor will our party continue to participate in the coalition government of which we have so far been a part. I myself have tendered my resignation as the Minister of Commerce.

Although our movement and the values that our movement has always stood for has suffered a setback today at the hands of socialist hooligans and a government willing to accept it, the values of liberty, modernity, and civilisation are eternal and untarnishable. The Scandinavian Left Party will draw new strength from this temporary setback and fight with renewed vigor for the liberation of the Scandinavian brother peoples.

I beseech everyone gathered here to fight with us.

Thank you.

London, England, United Kingdom (UK)
It was a day in London. People walking down the streets and to shops. They are gentle and poverty seemingly not affecting them despite the Great Depression. Well, not at least for a man in his 30s dressed in a gentleman uniform with jacket, hat and gloves. He was seemingly hidden from the folk due to a reason: He is a New Luddite, belonging to a secret leaderless group of technophobic extremists who remained hidden from many people. Their leadership is unknown, their numbers (number of individuals) are unknown and their whereabouts are unknown, but their goal is known to the public: They seek to rid the world of technology, industry and corporations. Once this is done, the world is returned to it's pre-industrial form where everyone are equal and fine.

The man, named "Alphonse McGee", entered an alley where he meets a New Luddite from Germany, Edward Schutzel. Schutzel was a veteran in the Great War and despised technology for it alongside the Great Depression and the corruption within many corporations. Schutzel was in the same uniform as Alphonse, but his uniform is black while Alphonse's uniform was brown, plus Schutzel has a Watson-esque hat of black color. Both began talking until Schutzel announced to Alphonse about the next plans in their anti-technological campaign.

"Okay, Alphonse", Schutzel explained. "There are homeless people in London who suffers so hard, both financially and emotionally. I have tried to track down some greedy Englishmen that we should assassinate, especially if they have ties to corporations. We must do anything to stop corporations from ruining our world with technology. Technology ruined my life during the Great War and when it ended I despised the technology to the point I really want to destroy it. That's why I became a New Luddite. This paper here shows a list of targets for our campaign. Those are MIT, Trinity College, Yerkes-Tesla Foundation, Technocracy Incorporated, Shanghai and Poznan. We will strike MIT again, but this time with success, plus we attack Poznan if it ever holds a tech fair again after it was delayed since our first attack in 1926. We will also strike some Jewish businesses, Princeton, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Rothschilds, Rockfeller and other corporations in the world such as Ford, Volvo, Colt and Mauser. We will also aid the Indian Revolution as some people in India are New Luddites such as Miriam Kalibana and Timothy Pelton. The British government is becoming more pro-corporatist and pro-technological, so we must weaken it through colonial revolution, social support, political intimidation and violent extremism in order to achieve our goal of de-technologize the UK. We are the New Luddites. We continue and will finish what the Old Luddites had started over a hundred years ago."

"Okay", Alphonse understood and took the paper.

"Don't show it to anyone who aren't New Luddites", Schutzel added. "If it happens, we are screwed and technology can continue to oppress mankind without anyone who can stop that oppression. All governments loves technology and opposes those who seeks to de-technologize the world. Don't trust anyone except for me and other New Luddites in and outside the UK. We are a secret organization. We must remain secret until we are victorious."

Schutzel then left Alphonse, who in turn left the alley with the paper deep in one of his trouser pockets. He went through the masses in the streets of London. He made it to his home in downtown London.

Meanwhile, a New Luddite had made a message and sent it to the British government.

The message goes like this:
To: British Government
From: New Luddites
Subject: Technology, Industry and Corporatism
Encryption: Enigma

Dear Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, the New Luddites have some things to explain regarding technology, industry and corporations. You see that technology is bad for mankind. It exists to produce things so deadly such as guns and bombs. The Industrial Revolution was extremely bad for us all. Living in a pre-industrial world was considered by us to be safe and calm, but it died out thanks to technology and now it looks like corporations are taking control of the world. Your government will fall in corporate hands one day if you don't agree with our ideologies regarding technology and social hierarchy. We, the New Luddites, are a group of unknown individuals spread across the world with the goal of eradicating machines and corporations. We demand that you do what we say or else we will commit an act of terror against you far more worse than our previous acts such as the YTF bombing in England and the fair massacre in Poznan, Poland. We are unknown to you: You don't know our names, you don't know about our leadership, you don't know about our origins and you don't know when we strike. But you know what our goals and ideologies are. We demand that you follow and accept these following.
1. Shut down all factories and criminalize discrimination against the lower class (including peasants and factory workers), homeless people and minority groups.
2. Financially support the homeless people of the British Empire
3. Condemn and blacklist the Yerkes-Tesla Foundation (it seeks to advance technology and later make machines take control of the world, bringing mankind under slavery and genocide)
4. Recognize Nikolai Tesla as a terrorist (because he financed the Black Hand, who started the Great War, and sold weapons to Zionists, American crime syndicates and the USSR)
5. Ban businesses who are friends with the Yerkes-Tesla Foundation and other technology-manufacturing corporations
6. Abolish technology and return the UK to the pre-industrial era.
7. Recognize India as a sovereing state (it's people has enough and threatens genocide against your brethren there)
8. Order all institutions, including Trinity College, to stop projects that involves weapons and other forms of technology.

When this is done, you will be spared and forced to support our campaign against corporations and technological advancement. If you refuse,
we will strike you hard and cripple your government. Anarchy reigns and an aristocracy will rule the UK under our revolutionary ideology. The British nobility is on our side, so you have no chance of persuading nobles into helping you, your government and the corporations who have doomed us all with technology. Do you understand, sir MacDonald?

Sincerely, Sir Crypt

Prime Minister MacDonald tentatively wiped his forehead. He thought he had just made a victory by discovering Larmor, but now, Germany was asking for money and these terrorists, the New Luddites, were threatening him. He certainly agreed with them about the YTF.

"My god," he says, " I have some letters to write."

To the Government of the Republic of Germany,
We are sorry to state that our economy, too, has fallen on such hardship. Homeless persons roam the streets, orphans fill our foster homes. We aren't being provided with technology by the YTF like your nation is. I don't think you realize it's a game changer, a complete economy booster. Utilize it, I suggest. Because, once the company pulls out, then the chaos will really hit.

Regards,
The Foreign Ministry of Great Britain

To the terrorists it may concern,
We are not accustomed to negotiating with terrorists, but I can only agree to some of your conditions, due to economic restraint:

1. We are doing our best to protect the marginalized.
2. We are also doing our best.
3. We have.
4. We will.
5. This we can't do. It will severely hurt our already failing economy.
6. No, also will hurt the economy
7. No, against the King's wishes.
8. I'll see.

If you strike us, you will be the hypocrites, because you will be using technology like guns and bombs. But I warn you, if you fight, you will be crushed by weaponry we have developed. Just wait.

The Sun beat down on the cracked Arizona ground. Nate looked up from a newspaper and out of the window next to his desk, and all he could see is a shimmering wall of heat distorting the vast expanse of red dirt. He turned his attention away from the window and crossed his office. It was small, but every inch of wall space was filled with designs, bookshelves, or parts of projects. Metal contraptions hung suspended from the ceiling, and loose tools and parts cluttered his desk. A ceiling fan spun wildly, trying in vain to keep the heat at bay. Nate walked over to his drafting table and made small marks with his pencil. He was finishing up the schematics for the latest model of their mechanical armor. It was impressive, to say the least, but it was still a prototype. Morgan, his main investor, was set on seeing the progress on the project, and Nate had worked like a madman to finish it on time. He absent mindedly looked over at a wall clock. "Shit!" He said aloud as he ran out the door into the workshop. It was One O'clock, and Morgan was scheduled to arrive at One Thirty.

The Workshop was quite large, it covered nearly an acre by itself. Large machines were hoisted up on chains, some rested on the ground; some half disassembled, others appearing whole. Nate's footsteps echoed off the walls as he ran towards the back of the shop. He came up to two younger men working on an engine. They sat on small stools with their hands deep within the mechanism. "James, Alfred. Where's Henry?" The one who went by Alfred looked up at his boss, "He's still in the back making the changes to the suit." Nate gave a small nod and hurried on his way.

Nate walked into the area where the suit was stored, and as he approached he saw sparks flying from around a corner. "Henry!" The older man, upon hearing his name, switched off his welder and lifted his face plate. "What's got you so fired up?"

"Morgan is coming in less than a half hour."

"I just finished the last tweaks. I'll get James and Alfred to help me move it out to the test range." He climbed down the rungs built into the suit and stood at its feet, admiring his handiwork. Henry used to work as a supervisor in an airship yard up north. He was great at building machines; give him a schematic and he could make it a reality in no time at all. He was let go after he was hurt in a plant accident. His leg was badly broken but despite the doctors' prognosis, it healed well. The company still refused to give him his job back stating that he was a liability. Nate had offered him a job shortly after. He had some difficulty moving around, but he was the main way any of Nates projects came to fruition. He was a man of average height and build. He was completely bald and had a kind, weathered face with bold blue eyes. His voice was gruff, but he was usually upbeat.

"Thank you, Henry, I'll be getting suited up."

John Pierpont Morgan Jr. looked down from his airship as it descended slowly towards the ground. He didn't like making the trip out to the workshop, but he needed to make sure that his money wasn't being wasted. He had grown up in his father's shadow; J.P. Morgan was the man who gave Tesla his break, and it made him a very rich man. Now, Morgan thought he had found, at worst, a great new inventor and way to make money, and at best, The next Tesla. The ship floated slowly next to the airship docking tower, and one of the crew jumped out and secured the ship. This particular model was smaller than many of its counter parts as this one was made for private use and prioritized speed over opulence. It was still luxuriously furnished, but mostly it got Morgan where he needed to go.

He stepped out onto the airship dock and observed the workshop. The main building stood in the center of a series of storage buildings, and a building containing a large generator stood back behind the main complex. Morgan looked a little further west and saw a large square of compacted dirt: the testing range. He started descending the steps that lead down from the dock and saw Nate waiting for him at the bottom. He liked Nate, he was courteous but still pragmatic. He knew what he intended to do and needed very little oversight. Despite that, Morgan still liked to keep tabs.

"Mr. Magnusson. Nice to see you again." Morgan gave Nate a hearty handshake when he reached the bottom of the steps. "Likewise, Mr. Morgan. How was your flight?"

"As uneventful as ever," Morgan said with a smile and a wave of his hand.

"Good to hear. I know you are a busy man Mr. Morgan, so we can get straight to the demonstration." Nate replied, gesturing towards the test range.

"Excellent. I can't help but confess that I am intrigued to see this machine in action. This could be of great interest to several militaries."

"Then I won't disappoint," Nate said with a confident smile.

The two men walked across the facility to the test range, talking briefly about the growing tensions around the globe.

Morgan's eyes grew wide with interest upon seeing the mech. It stood nearly fifteen feet tall and was covered in thick plates of metal. Small waist high mesh covered boxes were arranged in a circle around the suit and wires ran connecting all the boxes in series. "It is certainly impressive Nate."

"Just wait till you see it run. If you will wait here, Mr. Morgan." Nate walked past the ring and up to the mech. A small table was waiting for him with a helmet and a few last pieces of piloting suit. "This suit has special hooks that attach to the control mechanisms in the suit." Nate looked over and nodded to George, another employee, who reached down and raised a lever on a control panel. The ring of boxes started to hum, and the suit seemed to jitter and stand up straighter. "These boxes are modified Tesla wireless transmitters; Our first iteration of the design used steam, but It couldn't be used for more than a few minutes before it needed refueling. Our second used a combustion engine, but it made the thing too heavy. The third used a large capacitor. It ran the best without all the weight, but like the first, keeping it charged was the problem. The Tesla wireless network isn't strong enough to keep the suit powered, at least, not normally."

Nate climbed up the mech and pulled a lever that opened the cockpit. He stepped down into it but kept his head out. "These boxes produce a stronger, but smaller transmission field that gives the suit enough juice to keep its smaller capacitor charged for hours!" Nate dropped all of the ways down into the belly of the beast. He strapped himself in and hooked the suit to the control points. He stuck his hands into the manipulator controls, and he stepped on a pedal with his foot, and the cockpit hatch closed. Nate operated a few more of the foot controls and a small speaker crackled to life. "Can you hear me?"

Morgan called out from beyond the circle, "Loud and clear!"

"Great" Nate pressed one final switch and the web of chords that were connected to the control points pulled taunt, and the mech moved to match the position of the pilot. "Inside, there are strings connected to the hooks of the pilot suit, and to a gauntlet that allows being to control the hands and a similar contraption for the legs and feet." Nate raised his arm inside the mech, and the machines massive arm raised up. He slowly opened and closed his fist, and the mech's massive claw opened and closed. "It moves with electric motors, so there is little noise, and no fuel." He started walking over to a large airship engine that was brought out for the demonstration. The suit reached out and closed its metal claws around it; with minor effort, the suit hoisted the engine into the air and carried it to the center of the test range. Nate made a crushing motion with his hands, and the mech crushed the engine and gave it a good throw. "We had to sacrifice some power by not going with an actual engine, but I think it is still adequate." Nate returned the mech to its original position and powered it down. He climbed out and descended to the ground.

"Bravo!" Morgan shouted. "I am impressed."

"Thank you, Mr. Morgan." Nate motioned to the men to cut the power, and the humming died down.

"So, currently, it can only operate within one of these rings?"

"Yes. We are working on a delivery system for the ring, so it could be air-dropped into place before operations, but we're also working on a design for a mobile wireless transmitter that can make an effective range large enough that the suits would still be able to run on a battle field."

Morgan nodded. "And no weapons currently?"

"No. It's still a prototype, but it has mounting points for an assortment of weaponry."

"Excellent. I think that I have seen all that I require to be satisfied. Send me the schematics when you can, I think I know several possible buyers for the design. How quickly can you make a complete model?"

"I am going to need a few more weeks for optimization."

"Let me know when it's done, I am off. I have buisness that needs tending to." He stuck out his hand to Magnusson. "Thank you again."

"Thank you for comming." Nate gave a smile, and escorted Morgan back to his airship.
