Ah shit. :/
Well, I will post it regardless and just retract it and adapt it to Chile instead if he does come back.

You can safely ignore the Inca reservation for now, I can't find it, and even if it existed at some point, we can safely ignore it. You could get Guinea, Amazonas, and Peru if you'd like.

大日本海国
Dai Nippon Kaikoku
Great Japanese Maritime Nation

Full Nation Name : Maritime Empire of Japan (大日本海国, Dai Nippon Kaikoku)
Majority/Official Culture : Japanese
Territorial Core : Japanese home islands, the Ryukyu Islands, Sakhalin, Taiwan, Hawaii, Micronesia, Guam, the Mariana Islands, the Nanpō Islands, Minamitori Island, New Guinea, the Bismarck Islands, Queensland and coastal Northern Territory.
Territorial Claim : Eastern Indonesian islands and East Timor, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and the Solomon Islands.
Capital City : Kyoto
Population : 62.9 million (38.1 million for the home islands; 24.8 million in colonies).

Government Type : Ceremonial diarchy under traditionalist hereditary dictatorship
Government Ideology/Policies : Imperialism, mercantilism, traditionalism, Confucianism
Government Focus : Economic growth, maintaining dominant position in the Pacific, colonial expansion.
Head of State : Their Imperial Majesties, the Emperors of the Northern and Southern Courts.
Head of Government : Her Highness the Imperial Regent, Lady Toyotomi Hinami.
Government Description : The ultimate fount of all authority is considered to be the two co-emperors of Japan, who rule by virtue of their descent from the sun deity, Amaterasu-Omikami. In practice, however, authority is exercised by the Toyotomi clan as imperial regents or kampaku. There are two parallel governments within the Japanese Empire- one for the home islands of the Japanese people, referred to as Yamatokoku (大和国), and one for the overseas empire, known as the state of the sea or Kaikoku (海国), often translated as thalassocracy. Since all relations with tributary and barbarian states is dealt with by the Kaikoku-seifu (海国政府), the thalassocratic government, the latter is generally recognised as the relevant sovereign entity by foreign powers who refer to Japan in formal terms as 大日本海国, Dai Nippon Kaikoku. The supreme head of both governments is the kampaku (関白), meaning civil dictator or regent. The government of Yamatokoku consists of the Council of State, the Daijō-kan (太政官), and the Eight Ministries. In practice the imperial regent generally deals mostly with the affairs of the Kaikoku, whilst the Chancellor of the Realm (Daijō-daijin, 太政大臣), an official appointed by the regent, heads the administration of the Yamatokoku. The Kaikoku-seifu is formed of three secretariats, the Secretariat of Martial Affairs, the Secretariat of External Relations and the Secretariat of Civil Administration. The first oversees the defence of the Japanese empire; the second deals with foreign affairs, and the last is responsible for appointing colonial officials, collecting revenue and overseeing the implementation of justice outside the home islands. Each is headed by a secretary appointed by the regent.

Majority/State Religion : Most Japanese practise a combination of Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism. Confucianism is the state ideology and is strongly promoted by the Imperial Government. Shinto remains a largely disorganised folk religion, although it is central to the Japanese understanding of themselves and their nation; the Japanese Emperors serve as the dual religious heads of the Shinto religion. Buddhism has been suppressed in the past but is currently tolerated officially. Because Shinto regards death as unclean, funerary rites have traditionally been the domain of the Buddhist clergy.

Economic Ideologies : Mercantilism, Corporatism.
Major Production : Coal, steel, foodstuffs (especially rice), and luxury goods such as tea, silk and furniture.
Economic Description : Japan has one of the strongest economies in the world. It is an industrialised power, the second in East Asia after Korea, and dominates maritime commerce in the Pacific. Much of Japan's colonial expansion has been driven by the need to fuel industrialisation by acquiring new sources of fossil fuels, which are scarce in the home islands. Japan is also a major producer of many luxury and manufactured goods. The government has an interventionist approach to economics, maintaining a close relationship with the powerful merchant companies or zaibatsu (財閥) that control most of the economy in what has been termed a "corporatist" economic structure. The Imperial Government pursues protectionist and mercantilist policies in order to encourage production within the empire and reduce the outflow of wealth from importing foreign goods. Under a system of imperial preference, Japan restricts its colonies from trading with other states in order encourage trade within the empire. Inspired by Confucian ideals of reciprocal loyalty between lords (employers) and servants (employees), and prompted by unrest at the poor conditions faced by workers, the basics of a welfare state have been implemented for many years. Japan has a universal single-payer healthcare system based on a compulsory health insurance model. Laws protecting workers rights and guaranteeing a minimum wage exist.

Tech Level: 9

Army Strength : 822,560 troops strong, divided between the 160,200 troops of the Imperial Japanese Army and 662,360 Imperial Marines. Japan's ground forces are efficiently organised, highly motivated and loyal. Japanese culture promotes courage and honour in battle, and most Japanese troops would rather die than surrender to the enemy.
Army Weakness : The officer class, largely drawn from old samurai families, remain highly conservative in outlook and are yet to fully accept modern military doctrine and reconcile it with the samurai warrior code, whilst the rank-and-file are largely made up of conscripts who are less well-equipped and trained than their Western counterparts. Japan's ground forces also suffer from a lack of cavalry and artillery.
Naval Strength : The Imperial Japanese Navy (日本海軍, Nippon Kaigun) is one of the largest and best funded naval forces in East Asia. Its newest ships are among the world's most technologically advanced, and the Japanese have a strong naval tradition with a well established, tried and tested naval doctrine.
Naval Weakness : Decades of complacency have eroded the technological edge of Japan's fleets, with many ships being somewhat outdated, and it will take time to fully replace them with newer classes. Additionally many of the navy's officers achieved their position by birth rather than through merit, and are untested in a real battle scenario.
Further Military Description : There are two main branches of the Japanese military- the Imperial Japanese Army (日本皇軍), Nippon Kōgun) and the Imperial Japanese Navy (日本海軍, Nippon Kaigun). The Imperial Army is under the authority of the Yamatokoku-seifu and the Ministry of Defence, and dedicated to the defence of the home islands; in practice, it is relatively small and fulfils a largely ceremonial role due to the fact that Japan itself has not been under direct threat of invasion for centuries. The Imperial Navy is under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat of Martial Affairs, part of the Kaikoku-seifu. As the Imperial Army's role is officially restricted to the defence of the home islands, the role of the main ground force of the Japanese military is fulfilled by the greatly swollen Imperial Marine Corps, 日本海兵隊 (Nippon Kaiheitai). The Imperial Marines are responsible for the defence of the Japanese colonial empire and serve as its main offensive ground force. Many are drawn from the colonial population and are experts at ship-to-ship combat and boarding manoeuvres, island-hopping and fighting in tropical environments, making them highly well suited to defending Japan's vast maritime empire.

National Goals : To consolidate Japan's position as the main naval power in the Pacific, expand Japanese territory in southern Polynesia, Indonesia and Australasia, and keep rival colonial powers out of its sphere of influence.
National Issues : Japan faces the challenge of fully modernising its large but increasingly outdated naval forces, ending its diplomatic isolation by securing new alliances, and strengthening the army in order to defend and expand its continental possessions. Additionally, the Empire faces factionalism amongst the ruling elites at home and the threat of insurgency from its colonies.
National Figures of Interest :
  • Emperor of the Southern Court (南朝天皇, Nanchō Tennō): Personal name Yutanari (寛成). 58 years old. The older of Japan's co-sovereigns, Yutanari was known in his youth for his profligacy and inattention to study, preferring to spend time gambling, hunting and pursuing women. However his attitudes have changed with age, and he has become increasingly conservative, adopting an ascetic lifestyle and performing his obligations as emperor with dutiful devotion. Maintains a strictly Confucian court with close attention to protocol, but also a deeply devoted Zen Buddhist. His era name is Shōzū (正崇), meaning "upright and honourable."
  • Emperor of the Northern Court (北朝天皇, Hokuchō Tennō): Personal name Kenshō (賢章). 19 years old. The younger of Japan's co-sovereigns, only a year into his reign following the abdication of his grandfather. Bright, idealistic and open-minded, the Northern Emperor is known to be pro-reform whilst remaining a devoted Confucian. Although dutiful he is more inclined to question the established way of doing things than his southern counterpart. His era name is Shōkyō (昌慶), meaning "prosperous and jubilant."
  • Toyotomi Hinami (豊臣日南): 31 years old. The first woman to hold the title of kampaku, Lady Hinami is the daughter of previous imperial regent Toyotomi Hatsuo. She succeeded him as regent due to the lack of male heirs, with her father asking for and being granted a special edict approved by both emperors allowing the position to be filled by a woman in order to secure her legitimacy. Her husband, Toyotomi Motozane, is the head of a junior branch of the Toyotomi clan, although said branch broke off from the main line some 200 years ago, meaning the couple are not closely related. Their marriage was arranged to secure the Toyotomi clan's control of the office of regent. Charming and cultured, Hinami has proven a capable leader, embodying the ideal of the Yamato-Nadeshiko; a proper lady with a streak of iron. Her rule has been characterised by cautious reform and an increasingly ambitious and assertive foreign policy.
National Ambition/Aspirations : To become the leader of a politically and economically dominant coalition of countries under East Asian cultural influence, pursuing a civilising mission amongst the barbarians of the world. Hakkō ichiu.

History : Japan is a nation with an ancient history. According to traditional accounts its sovereigns have reigned in an unbroken line for over two thousand years, the Imperial House of Yamato- Japan's ruling dynasty- having been founded by Emperor Jimmu (神武天皇, Jinmu-tennō) in 660 BC. Through him, the imperial lineage may trace its ancestry back to the Goddess of the Sun, Amaterasu-Omikami (天照大神). Although the early origins of the Japanese nation are shrouded in myth and mystery, Chinese sources dating from the 3rd century AD confirm the existence of a powerful kingdom known as Yamataikoku in the Japanese archipelago. Buddhism was introduced to Japan by the 6th century, in the Asuka Period. In the following Nara Period, so-named for the city of Nara which is built upon the site of the then-capital of Japan, the country became more centralised and began to adopt Chinese Confucian ideas on governance. Literature and the arts began to flourish. The Nara Period ended with the shift of Japan's capital from Nara to Nagaoka and then finally to Heian, modern day Kyoto, marking the beginning of the Heian Period. This period of Japanese history witnessed the decline of imperial authority as Japan's emperors became figureheads for the powerful Fujiwara clan, who monopolised the powerful position of kampaku (関白), meaning chief advisor to the emperor. The loss of power by Japan's emperors did not halt the cultural flourishing that had begun in the Nara Period, however. Japan at this time began to develop the distinctive culture it is known for today, and a strong sense of Japanese identity and nationhood emerged. The ethos of the Japanese nation in this period was expressed by a phrase from The Tale of Genji, one of the greatest works of Japanese and world literature, written at the Heian court by a female courtier named Murasaki Shikibu; "it is when there is a fund of Chinese learning (才, zae) that the Japanese spirit (大和魂, Yamato-damashii) is respected in the world."

The trend of declining imperial authority continued into the second millennium, and by the 12th century the court nobility had also began to lose its power in favour of the newly ascendant warrior class, the samurai. The passage of power from the Fujiwara court clan to the Minamoto samurai clan under the leadership of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first military ruler or shogun (将軍) of Japan, heralded the dawn of Japan's feudal era and the beginning of the Kamakura Period. By the end of the Kamakura shogunate, even the shogun had become a figurehead to the powerful Hōjō clan, who wielded the title of Regent to the Shogunate or shikken (執権). Thus the emperor, kampaku and shogun were all reduced to figureheads in a situation that could only arise as a result of Japan's strong Confucian culture, which made openly deposing and replacing one's superior or liege lord an unthinkable offence. Under the Hōjō clan the Japanese successfully defeated Mongol invasions in 1274 and 1281, but they ultimately lost power in the 14th century as a result of an attempt by the Emperor Go-Daigo to topple the shogunate and restore the imperial house to true power in the so-called Kenmu Restoration. The Emperor was successful in toppling the Hōjō, but not in curbing the ambitions of the samurai class. By 1336 the Restoration government had collapsed and the imperial capital of Kyoto fell into the hands of a rebel samurai named Ashikaga Takauji, a descendant of the Minamoto clan, who proclaimed himself shogun and installed a rival claimant to the imperial throne as Emperor Kōgon. Emperor Go-Daigo and his supporters fled south to Yoshino, where they established a rival court known as the Southern Court whilst the court in Kyoto became known as the Northern Court. The conflict between the Ashikaga shoguns and the Southern Court lasted until 1392, when the third Ashikaga shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, offered the beleaguered Southern Court a compromise; the role of emperor would be shared between the northern and southern lines, who would each hold nominal authority over the northern and southern parts of the country, with Kyoto demarking the dividing line. In practice, authority over the entire country would remain with the shogun, but the Southern Court could save face and retain their prestige. The three imperial treasures, the regalia of the Japanese Emperor, would be shared between the two emperors, spending half the year with the Northern Court Emperor and half the year with the Southern Court Emperor. Furthermore, as the senior imperial line the Southern Court Emperors would hold seniority to the Northern Court. This agreement led to the establishment of Japan's unique diarchic system that has endured to the modern day.

The rule of the Ashikaga clan saw Japan experience an era of relative peace and prosperity, but the in-looking tendencies of the Japanese elite continued. Whilst neighbouring Korea emerged as a colonial power in south-east Asia, Japan remained insular and unconcerned with foreign affairs. This state of affairs was not to last indefinitely, however. Growing rivalries between Japan's powerful feudal lords, the daimyō (大名), began to undermine the central authority of the shogunate. In 1467, the Ōnin War broke out as a consequence of a dispute between two powerful lords, Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Sōzen. The war rapidly escalated out of control, and signalled the end of the Ashikaga shogunate's centralised rule over Japan. This began Japan's Warring States or Sengoku Period. The Imperial Courts lacked any authority to impose order on the country. Ashikaga Yoshiteru, the 14th Ashikaga shogun, was assassinated in 1565 and the ambitious and powerful daimyō Oda Nobunaga seized power and installed Yoshiteru's brother Yoshiaki as puppet shogun. Nobunaga was a skilled military leader and a capable political reformer, but also known to be brutal in his efforts to unify Japan under his rule. By 1582 most of Japan was under Nobunaga's control, but in that year he was assassinated along with his eldest son in a coup by a former subordinate, Akechi Mitsuhide. It fell to Nobunaga's vassal Hashiba Hideyoshi, a peasant's son raised high by his talents as a negotiator and commander and by Nobunaga's largesse, to avenge his liege lord. Mitsuhide was defeated by Hideyoshi's forces at the Battle of Yamazaki, and Mitsuhide himself died shortly afterwards, supposedly killed by a bandit named Nakamura Chōbei with a bamboo spear- a dishonourable end for the powerful samurai. Hideyoshi now took for himself his former master's place as ruler of Japan. Like Nobunaga, he was not descended from the Minamoto clan and therefore ineligible to claim the title of shogun, but instead had himself adopted by the Konoe branch of the powerful Fujiwara clan and adopted a new surname, Toyotomi. He was thus able to take the title of kampaku, civil dictator or regent to the Emperors.

Hideyoshi was not content with completing the unification of Japan that Nobunaga had began. After securing the country, he looked to expand his power by invading China. His hopes were to construct a vast Japanese empire spanning all of Asia, rivalling that of the Mongols who had tried to invade Japan centuries earlier. Hideyoshi had hoped to gain the collaboration of Korea in his ambitions, but the Koreans, who were a tributary to the Chinese Ming dynasty at the time, refused to allow Japanese forces to pass through Korea. Hideyoshi thus resolved to invade Korea. From 1592 to 1598, Japan waged two campaigns against Korea. The Korean kingdom was at the time feeble militarily and Hideyoshi's troops, far better trained and equipped than their Korean counterparts and experienced from Japan's long civil wars, quickly overran most of the peninsula. However, Japanese ambitions were ultimately foiled by the intervention of the powerful and virtually independent Korean Viceroyalty of Chuk-jae-do in south-east Asia. The Viceroyalty's forces inflicted devastating losses on the Japanese navy, cutting off Japan's armies in Korea from reinforcements, and fresh Korean troops from the colonies began to wear down the resolve of Japan's forces. On the 18th September 1598, Hideyoshi died of natural causes, and the new ruling Council of Five Elders decided to withdraw Japan's armies from Korea. The ill-feeling towards Korea in Japan was somewhat moderated by the Koreans' agreement to allow the peaceful withdrawal of Japanese soldiers and the release of all prisoners of war. With Hideyoshi gone, his son Toyotomi Hideyori was declared kampaku and ruler of Japan, but actual power was exercised by a council of regents. Hideyoshi's dreams of expansion were temporarily forgotten by Japan's new rulers, but not by his heirs.

By 1600, relations between the members of the council had deteriorated. Civil war broke out between Hideyoshi's former retainer Tokugawa Ieyasu and the other four members of the council. Toyotomi Hidetsugu, Hideyoshi's nephew, adopted son and former heir who had been exiled upon the birth of Toyotomi Hideyori to prevent a succession crisis, returned from his exile and began gathering an army of his own to fight the Tokugawa forces and protect Toyotomi rule. Hideyoshi had considered forcing Hidetsugu to commit suicide, but had relented after being advised against it; it was now Hidetsugu who would save the Toyotomi clan's legacy. Hidetsugu met and defeated Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara, after which Ieyasu committed ritual suicide, seppuku, leaving Hidetsugu in control of Japan. Hideyori remained the nominal ruler of Japan, but his older cousin and adoptive brother held real power, marrying his daughter to Hideyori in order to increase his authority over him as his father-in-law, since under Confucian precepts sons-in-law owed filial piety to their bride's parents. Both Hidetsugu and Hideyori shared Hideyoshi's dreams of expanding Japanese power, but it was clear that another invasion of Korea was out of the question. Instead, Hidetsugu opened Japan up to trade with Korean and European merchants, and began building up Japan's naval strength, nurturing ambitions of building a Japanese colonial empire that would eclipse that of Korea. Under him, the Japanese gradually expanded north, charting and colonising the unexplored islands of Hokkaido and Karafuto (Sakhalin). At the same time, Japanese merchants with state sponsorship began to establish outposts in the Philippines and the Spice Islands, resulting in clashes with Korea. A series of colonial wars with Korea through the 17th and 18th centuries saw Japan's defeat in the Philippines, but by then Japan had already established a presence further south, shifting its colonial aspirations to the south and east and away from Korea.

Hidetsugu died 1632. He had intended that his son Senchiyomaru would succeed him as Japan's ruler, but an effort to displace Hideyori as kampaku backfired when Hideyori, as Hideyoshi's rightful heir, was able to claim the support of most of the daimyō and defeated Senchiyomaru in a brief succession struggle. Senchiyomaru performed seppuku and Hideyori reigned for more than twenty years, overseeing the conquest of Taiwan and defeat of rival colonial ventures on the island by the Koreans, Dutch and Spanish. It was Hideyori who initiated the division of Japan's government between the Yamatokoku-seifu, responsible for administrating the home islands, and the Kaikoku-seifu, which oversaw Japan's colonies and dealt with foreign affairs. At the same time, Japan began to improve its naval forces by incorporating elements of European design into its ships. Naval innovation in this period led to the creation of ships that were better suited than their Korean and Chinese counterparts for long voyages in deeper waters, and Japanese explorers set out to reach the west coast of America, the regent's court being inspired by tales of Europeans circumnavigating the globe. In the process the Japanese charted and annexed much of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

In the 19th century, Japan was one of the two great colonial powers of East Asia. At this time, concerns over European expansion into what the Oriental powers regarded as their natural sphere of influence prompted a détente between Korea and Japan, and an agreement was established that Japan would restrict its territorial ambitions to the east whilst Korea focused on expansion in the west. Japan was the second East Asian country to industrialise, following Korea in the mid-19th century. Although power remains in the hands of the Toyotomi clan as imperial regents, some reforms have been implemented as the nation progresses both technologically and socially; discrimination against the burakumin (部落民) outcast class is now officially prohibited, although still widespread unofficially. The samurai class have been converted into a class of hereditary officer families, filling high-ranking positions within both the military and civil service, which remain closely intertwined. Powerful merchant clans have developed into the family-owned zaibatsu business conglomerates which control much of Japan's economy. The Empire has developed a basic welfare state based on Confucian precepts. Despite this, Japan remains a deeply traditional society, more distrustful of outside influence than other East Asian nations; Japanese regard their nation as the modern centre of East Asian and Confucian culture, replacing an increasingly fractured China as the "Middle Kingdom" (中国, Chūkoku). Other cultures are dismissed as barbarians and their presence in Japan itself is generally restricted to a few ports, except for those who gain special permission from the Yamatokoku-seifu to travel more widely.

No, a post from a previous iteration of AD will do. Maybe post a link to it just for the sake of form. We do like our bureaucracy.

大日本海国
Dai Nippon Kaikoku

Full Nation Name : Maritime Empire of Japan (大日本海国, Dai Nippon Kaikoku)
Majority/Official Culture : Japanese
Territorial Core : Japanese home islands, the Ryukyu Islands, Sakhalin, Taiwan, Hawaii, Micronesia, Guam, the Mariana Islands, the Nanpō Islands, Minamitori Island, Papua New Guinea (eastern New Guinea plus the Bismarck Island) and Queensland.
Territorial Claim : Western New Guinea, eastern Indonesian islands and East Timor, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands
Capital City : Kyoto
Population : 41.9 million (27.1 million for the home islands; 14.8 million in colonies).

Economic Ideologies : Mercantilism
Major Production : Coal, steel, foodstuffs, luxury goods such as tea, silk and furniture
The government has an interventionist approach to economics, maintaining a close relationship with the powerful merchant clans that control most of the economy. Protectionist and mercantilist policies are in place to encourage production within the empire and reduce the outflow of wealth from importing foreign goods. The basics of a welfare state are beginning to be implemented, based on Confucian ideals of reciprocal loyalty between lords (employers) and servants (employees), and prompted by unrest at the poor conditions faced by workers.

Tech Level: 9

Army Strength : 822,560 troops strong, efficiently organised and fanatically loyal. Japanese culture promotes courage in battle and troops would rather die than surrender to the enemy.
Army Weakness : The officer class, largely drawn from old samurai families, remain highly conservative in outlook and are yet to fully accept modern military doctrine and reconcile it with the samurai warrior code, whilst the rank-and-file are largely made up of ill-equipped and poorly-trained conscripts. Japan's army suffers from a lack of cavalry and artillery.
Further Military Description : TBA

The Legislative Branch is a bicameral Congress composed of the Senate and House of Representatives. Each of the eleven states in the country receives two senators and one representative for every 250,000 citizens for a total of 16 senators and 81 representatives. Congress proposes and ratifies bills, passing them into law for the President to sign and enforce.
The Judicial Branch consists of the Federal Supreme Court, Federal Appellate Courts, and Federal Circuit Courts and is tasked with interpreting the Constitution and trying major crimes that fall outside of state or local jurisdiction.

Majority/State Religion : Protestant Christianity
Religious Description : Southern Baptist Christianity. Look it up. I don't know anything about it, I'm not Baptist.

Economic Ideologies : Laissez faire capitalism
Major Production : 47% agricultural (hogs, cattle, sheep, cotton, tobacco, sugarcane) 53% industrial (iron, steel, firearms, ships, textiles)
Economic Description : The Confederate economy is a capitalist economy with substantial agriculture and industry. There is also substantial income inequality, with virtually all of the wealth held by the white population due to the racist apartheid policies adopted by the government in 1895.

Tech Level: 9.6 (I am assuming that, by bleeding edge of technology, you mean EXTREMELY primitive self-loading rifles, Maxim gun variations, early dreadnoughts, Wright Flyer, primitive autocars, etc.)

Army Strength : The Confederate Army is large, well equipped, and well trained, with much of its military power based on the border with the UKA and the Aztecs.
Army Weakness : The Confederate Army is led by a large number of generals trained during the 1870s and 1880s and as such are often needlessly risked forming antiquated line formations. However, studies of new machine guns are gradually leading to the reform of the Army's tactics and organization.
Naval Strength : The Confederate Navy boasts a powerful and modern surface fleet, with numerous large capital ships, including more than 40 battleships.
Naval Weakness : The Confederate Navy lacks a substantial submarine force, limiting their ability to interdict enemy shipping.
Further Military Description : The Confederate Army has 10 Cavalry Divisions, 94 Infantry and Reserve Divisions, 31 Independent Brigades, 19 Coastal Artillery Battalions, and 10 major coastal forts, with numerous forts strung along the border with the Aztecs and the UKA.
A Cavalry Division has a total of 9,216 men, 9,518 horses, 448 wagons, 430 bicycles, 24 76.2mm guns, and 24 Tredegar Machine Guns. These are allocated to a headquarters company of 96 men, 4 cavalry regiments of 1,718 men each, 4 artillery batteries of 420 men each, 191 men in a Field Engineers Company, 206 men in a Signal Engineers Company, 26 men in a quartermasters section, and 4 field ambulances with 124 men each.
A typical infantry division consists of 18,000 men, 4,600 horses, 24 machine guns, and 72 field guns. The division has two Infantry Brigades of 6,780 men each, each with two Infantry Regiments of 3,390 men, consisting of three infantry battalions and a machine gun company of 150 men each, an artillery brigade with two artillery regiments of two artillery battalions, a cavalry squadron, engineer company, medical battalion, signal company, and quartermasters battalion.

The Confederate Navy boasts an impressive fleet with 35 Battleships, 11 Battlecruisers, 4 Armored Cruisers, 37 Light Cruisers, 3 Protected Cruisers, 160 Destroyers and flotilla leaders, and 14 submarines in the Atlantic Fleet. The Caribbean Fleet boasted an addition 18 Battleships, 5 Battlecruisers, 14 Light Cruisers, 60 Destroyers and Flotilla Leaders, and 25 Submarines. The River Fleet boasted 44 Torpedo Boats and 58 River Monitors.

National Goals : To reclaim Virginia from UKA (peacefully if possible), to capture Louisiana and Texas to exploit their resources
National Issues : Race Relations (not that the government will ever admit that), Income inequality (not that the government is likely to admit it)
National Figures of Interest : Major General Jeffery T. Graves, Senator Timothy W. Wing, Marvin Tredegar, Rigel Goldberg
National Ambition/Aspirations : To become the most powerful nation in North America

History : In 1785, the states of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia seceded from the United Kingdom of America, forming the Confederate States of America. Over the next several decades, the Confederacy would expand, adopting a constitution that gave broad powers to the Federal Government but also gave more specific powers to the states. Negotiations with the UKA in the hopes of a peaceful resolution, though continuous, were ultimately fruitless.

Events came to a head in 1836 when, concerned about the potential expansion of slavery and finally given an excuse to punish the South, the UKA invaded Virginia. In the bloody four year war that followed, Richmond and Petersburg burned as did Baltimore and Harrisburg. In the end the UKA had claimed large territories from the Indigenas to the west and the state of Virginia, in reparation from the South. The peace with the CSA was formalised with the Armistice of Appomattox in 1840.

In 1860, bitter after the defeat in the Virginia War, the CSA launched a brutal surprise attack into Virginia with the aim of retaking it. A Confederate Army of 140,000 men entered Virginia and began the brutal task of retaking the homeland of some of the Confederacy’s greatest military leaders. The Army was led by the now 53 year old Army Officer Robert Edward Lee, who succeeded in handing the UKA some rather sound defeats. The Second Virginia War lasted for five long years and killed some 700,000 men. The war left Virginia in a sorry state and still in UKA hands.

After the War, the Confederacy began the laborious three decade process of rebuilding and growing its economy. The loss of the Northern Factories forced the South to build more factories and shipyards, a process taking the better part of the next twenty five years. During this time, additional economic pressure from Europe forced the Confederate Government to free the African slaves from bondage in 1890. However, the Confederate Government did not enforce the emancipation and so many African-Americans remained enslaved in all but name. The former slaves were not granted citizenship and, as such, were unable to vote and, in many districts, were denied many basic constitutional rights, such as assembly, association, and even trial by jury.

The situation of African-Americans in the Confederacy has not improved much in recent years, though one could argue quite well that their situation hasn’t improved at all, however the economic situation of the Confederacy itself has never been better. The economy is on the rise, with a Gross Domestic Product of approximately $100 billion, or $3.4 trillion in 2016 dollars, up from $42 billion in 1890.

National Goals: Improve the Economy and Arabian Industry.
National Issues: Tensions between Shia, Sunni and other sects of Islam within the Republic.
National Figures of Interest: The Prophet Mohammed (Lazy answer, i know.)
National Ambition/Aspirations: Uniting all of Islam under the Arabian Nation.

History: For centuries, the people of the Arabian peninsula lived isolated lives. There was no Arab nation, only tribes that roamed the deserts, hoping from oasis to oasis, raising cattle and just surviving. This was once not the case, for once all of Arabia and the land of sand was ruled by a mighty caliphate, created by the successors of Gods Prophet himself. They ruled a land, not of tribes, but of one Arab people. Then the Romans came, and the Arab people stood their ground, only to fall to Persian daggers lodged in their backs. The Caliphate fell, and Arabia slowly was obsorbed by the empire of new.

All has been conquered, except for one place. The inhospitable Arabian Peninsula; a vast track of uncrossable desert, where no Roman or Persian has dared to step foot in. There, the Arab peoples ran, there God gave them shelter. There, the centuries of Tribes went on, before an act of god ended it. In his sleep, Hussein bin Ali recieved the word of god. He called for Hussein, he called for him to do his work and to reunited the peoples of the Desert, to once more form a land of Arabs, ruled by neither Roman or Persian.

He took his rightful place as the Emir of Mecca, and began to expand his power. Over the many years, he began to assimilate more and more power, absorbing new Tribes into his control through Bribes, Diplomacy and when needed, Force. In 1880, he declared the Republic of Arabia, and he moved his government to the city of Riyadh, so as to be more central to the empire. In 1892, Hussein died of a tumor, and the nation was sent into a panic. For all these years, Hussein had ruled as a dictator, but now without him here there was no power. A collection of city leaders met in Riyadh, conveening the first ever Peoples Assembly. They passed the first, and only, law to be passed by the Assembly, a law which ammended the Consititution to force Emir's to serve One Ten year term.

After Hussein, a new Emir had been elected, Ali bin Hussein. He brought about many Economical Reforms, including subsidies on the Mining and Shipping industry, along with the creation of the Arabian Colonies on the Horn of Africa. He built Arabia's first official Fleet of ships, which began to protect trading in Arabian Waters from the infamous pirates of the area, along with enforcing Arabian rule in the Colonies. When the days flew by, and the new millenium came, Hussein stepped down, and the next Emir of Arabia was elected; Faisal I.

Full Nation Name : The Republic of Missouri
Majority/Official Culture : Missourian culture is the official culture, which is closely related to both Dixie and American culture with a more liberal bent. While it is definitely kindred with its American sister nations, Missouri's culture is closely tied to the Mississippi, and to the Prairies, and to a sense of romantic nationalism stoked by creators such as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Mark Twain, and Christopher Columbus Andrews. The added benefit of open land has helped to attract immigrants from the other American states, who tend to be seeking the more open Prairie culture as well. Within Missouri, there are many pockets of black American, Dixie (called Bushwhackers in Missouri), and especially Acadien culture.

Full Nation Name : Union des Républiques Pacifiques
Majority/Official Culture : Océanien (Colonial French, Spanish, Portuguese and English)
Territorial Core : What's in light blue
Territorial Claim : The whole Pacific, the western coast of South America up to Panama.
Capital City : There are three distinct ones for each of the individual republics Cayenne (Capital of the "République de Guyanne"/Guiana), Saint-Jean (Capital of the "République d'Incanie"/Chile) and Port-Libre (Capital of the "République des terres Australes"/Southern Australia and New Zealand) but the official Capital of the union itself is "La Réunion" (located in Chile.)
Population : 24 600 000
Government Type : Federal Semi-Presidential Republic
Government Ideology/Policies : Nationalism, Imperialism, Interventionism.
Government Focus : Strengthening the National Identity and continuing the assimilation of the "indigenous" to it, the advancement and continuation of the prosperity of the Union, the protection of its colonial interests.
Head of State : Président Philippe Boulanger
Head of Government : Premier Ministre Richard Gallieni
Government Description : Each independent Republic possess it's independent parliament ruling over it whose members are democratically elected by its citizens. In top of said parliaments exist a "Sénat" , whose members are elected by everyone in the nation, that vote laws and policies for the entire country and has power to overturn the local parliaments if need be and act as a counterbalance to the president. The government itself is lead by the president, who used to be chosen by the "Sénat" but who is now elected by popular vote, that act as the head of state and a prime minister, who is chosen among candidates put forth by the président by a majority of two out of three of the local parliaments, that act as the head of government.

Majority/State Religion : Roman Catholicism

Economic Ideologies : Officially Free Trade tho actually way closer to Economical Interventionism
Major Production : Manufactured goods mainly but also one of the main exporter in the world of Nitrates and Copper.
Economic Description : With maritime interfaces in both the Atlantic and Pacific, the U.R.P has grown rich from trade thanks particularly to the "Route de l'or", a massive road artery traversing the north of South America from west to east and linking the Chilean Ports to the Guianan ones thus assuring the quickest and cheapest flow of goods from Asia to Europe.
Not content with merely profiting from the money it made from the tolls, however, the U.R.P saw a massive industrialization of its coastal areas in the 19th centuries which is still happening today and started to export massively toward Europe not only the raw resources it got from Asia and its own soil but also manufactured good made from them. This "also" soon became "mainly" and the U.P.R quickly became one of the industrial powerhouse of the continent.
This economical boom, however, was mainly limited to the coastal areas with inland ones lagging way behind, being still mostly rural even to this day. The regions around the "Route de l'or" were the ones the less affected by it for a long time but, as railroad appeared making the travel of goods way faster, even them weren't spared completely and are now slowly but steadily fading into irrelevance.

Tech Level: 8.5/9

Army Strength : With 300 000 well-trained and disciplined regular soldiers and the ability to easily call and arm just as much reservists and double as much conscripts at short notice, "L'Armée de Terre" is one of the best of its region. It is also one of the most modern and well-equipped one, especially in term of artillery (which always was the main focus of the army).
Army Weakness : The Etat-Major is plagued by an overly defensive mindset privileging "reaction" over "action" and overvaluing the importance and usefulness of forts and natural barriers. This as lead to big chunks of its long borders being left massively undermanned out of over-confidence as it's simply supposed that enemies simply couldn't break through them, anyway.
Naval Strength : "La Marine Nationale" is one of the best navy of the Pacific and South America, both in term of quality and quantity, coupled with a strong naval tradition and battle-proved doctrines.
Naval Weakness : The cockiness (or careful decision born out of risk calculation depending on who you would ask) of the Etat-Major is the reason behind the main Naval weakness of the U.R.P. Indeed, to defend colonials interest and act as a diplomatic tool, the quasi-totality of the fleet has been stationed in the Pacific with only a token force being left to defend the Atlantic coast which is utterly unable to respond to any threat that could arise there.

National Goals : To consolidate the position of the country as a regional power, expand its territories in the Pacific and Asia and unify the ethnically-diverse population within a single national identity of "Océanien".
National Issues : The U.R.P is a multi-ethnic country with around 49% of it's population being "Colons" (descendants from European settlers), 38% being "Métis" ("mixed blood") and 13% being "Indigènes" (natives tho the Asiatic immigrants that have come to the U.R.P to work in the factories are included among those numbers).
Only the first group enjoy full citizenship while the second has limited voting rights, being only authorized to cast their ballots for referendums (and the presidential election which has been classified as so), and the last live under a statute of "residency".
While there has been efforts made by the government to solve this situation notably by loosening the purely blood-related part of the system, classifying as "Colons" any child who had more than three grand-parents who were themselves classified as so when in the past having any "Métis" or "Indigène" in your bloodline made you a "Métis" yourself, and by allowing "promotion" to a superior class through military contribution (typically from one to three decades of service in the army) or civil one (usually enough money to bribe local officials with); by simply working around this racist system rather than destroying it, the government only managed to somewhat lessen the problem but not to actually solves it.
National Figures of Interest : Président Philippe Boulanger, Premier Ministre Richard Gallieni, Général Emile le Gaillard, Député Joseph Dumoulin.
National Ambition/Aspirations : To form a single union with all the territories in the Pacific and Western America, to bring civilization to the savages there and uplift them to the Superior Americano-European culture.

History : The U.R.P's history began way before it's actual founding when French settlers set foot on America for the first time, forming a colony in Guiana in the 16th century. The land was rather inhospitable, however, and it's probable that further colonial efforts in the regions would have been abandoned had it not been for one man, Samuel de Champlain. Like Columbus before him, he believed that it could be possible to reach the indies by going toward the west for long enough, the existence of a speck of land between Europe and Cathay surely didn't change that fact! Thus, in his eyes, by walking until a sea was found and then continuing by boat, it would be possible to reach it and so that's exactly what he went on to do; marching through the jungle with two "Compagnies de Lances" that the King had granted him. He eventually found the Ocean but there were already people living there, and not mere tribesmen; indeed, the Inca Empire was at its peak at the time. The relations between the explorers and locals were tense from the start, to say the least, as they had arrived just after an omen of doom had been prophesied by the Sapa Inca's priests; and, indeed, those lily people with hair on their face who were wearing clothes made of metal, riding strange creatures and summoning thunder with their iron sticks surely seemed like devils fitting perfectly this prophecy.
Quickly, conflict broke out and despite an over-whelming numerical advantage, cavalry charges and musket fire proved so moral wrecking and unstoppable to the Incas' leaders that they simply retreated to the mountains abandoning their lands. After going back to the court of the "Roy de France" to notice him of the existence of those new lands he had taken control over of in his name and request more funds and men, Samuel de Champlain went on with the second part of his plan. After an arduous trip through the Pacific, he finally reached Indonesia thus proving his claim true, and it's at that moment that the U.R.P's history really began.
Indeed, as through the years countless trips followed that first one, prosperity flow to these lands along the Asiatic goods. Cities were built, ports sprawled all over the coasts, people migrated from the Mainland en masse to settle this new land. No big events happened for the next three centuries almost but the colonies of Guyanne and Incanie continued to grow steadily, conquering surrounding lands around the massive artery linking them.
What ended those days of peaceful boredom was the ground-shattering event that was the French Revolution. The settlers in the two colonies were just as taken by the Ferveur Révolutionnaire as the people in the Métropole were and thus Sister-Republics were declared as the vice-roys were driven out from them.
It turned out, however, that the people there were more Republicans than those back in the homeland, maybe because they hadn't to suffer from the War it brought and, dismayed by Napoléon's coup du 18 Brumaire, declared independence from France. The colonies of Guyanne and Incanie remained as two independent countries for almost two decades but military threats and a desire to maintain trade interests that benefited them both pushed them to form a first confederation : "L'Union des Républiques d'Amériques". Free from its colonial shackles, it started to do some colonization of its own; claiming small islands in Oceania around its trades routes at first and even settling "l'Île de la Liberté" (New Zealand) and the southern-east of Australia. This confederation, however, was very decentralized with little power given to the federal government which impeded massively the realization of anything of importance. In 1856, using representation of the newly acquired colonies as a pretext and his massive popularity as a mean, the president at the time "Michel de la Guillère" managed to push and win a referendum to admit those territories as a single republic, "La République des Terres Australes" and a new member of the confederation. It was then subsequently renamed to "l'Union des Républiques Pacifiques" , the addition of a third republic managing to break the political dead-lock in which the union was stuck and opening a new era of ever growing Centralization.
RP Sample: Does it need to be from a nation-building R.P? Because if not, then here is one of my last post in a character-building one. If it needs to be a nation-building one in particular, I can dig one up but it would be a couple of month old which I hope is ok.

It could be a little too much in terms of territory, especially since you do border three nations that would be your major rivals, the Aztecs, Japan, and Callista.

As such, I'd recommend abandoning Australia, and keeping only the islands and New Zealand. And the very most, maybe southeastern Australia.

Don't quote me on that, but the military numbers might be too high. Especially in the navy, if it was established only a few years earlier, I sort of doubt that it could reach such a size, even if you are in a prime position to become a naval power in the future.

Well i didn't really have anything to go off of, since during this time Arabia was under Ottoman Rule, so i really just guessed. I can trim it down a bit.

Fair enough, I actually planned just to take the bit under Japan's one at first but missclicked on paint.net and roll with it.
I will cut back to that when I finish updating the app.

The Emperor, Senate and People of Rome

Imperator Imperatorum Imperans Imperantibus!
Βασιλεύς Βασιλέων Βασιλεύων Βασιλευόντων!
Emperor or Emperors, Ruling Over Those Who Rule!

Full Nation Name : The Roman Empire (Imperium Romanum|Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων-Basileía Rhōmaíōn), the Empire of the Romans (Imperium Romanorum|Βασιλεία τῶν Ῥωμαίων-Basileia tōn Rhōmaiōn|Ἀρχὴ τῶν Ῥωμαίων-Archē tōn Rhōmaiōn). The phrase: the Emperor, Senate, and People of Rome (Imperator Senatusque Populusque Romanus|Η Αυτοκράτορας Σύγκλητος και ο Λαός της Ρώμης - I Aftokrátoras Sýnklitos kai o Laós tis Rómis) is used to officially refer to the Roman Government, while unofficial names like the Roman Republic (Res Publica Romana|Πολιτεία τῶν Ῥωμαίων-Politeia tōn Rhōmaiōn) also exist. Shorter names include Romania-the Land of the Romans, with the derived (Imperium Romaniae|Βασιλεια Ρωμανια-Basileia Romania). Foreigners sometimes use the historical exonyms of the Byzantine Empire (Imperium Byzantinium|Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία-Byzantiní Aftokratoría), or of the Eastern Roman Empire (Imperium Romanum Orientale|Ανατολική Ρωμαϊκή Αυτοκρατορία-Anatolikí Romaïkí Aftokratoría) but they are not actively used by the Romans themselves.
Majority/Official Culture : The main and official culture is Roman, but other cultures exist through the many citizens of the Empire. Romanitas (Romanity, or Romanism) is the idea of the Roman civilization rather than its political reality. Included among its concepts are the very symbols of the Roman Empire, those things that are identified with the Roman people, military and government. The inhabitants of the Empire refer to themselves as Roman (Romani) or Roman Citizens (Cives Romani). The Roman culture is a true successor of both the Roman and the Hellenistic worlds, from all points of view, borrowing cultural elements from them and from various other cultures which have influenced the Roman Empire and the Orient in general. Latin is the official language of the Empire and the language spoken by most of its citizens, while Greek is the most popular second language, mostly learned by nobles, being sometimes even used in the official administration.
Territorial Core :

Disclaimer: Before people start screaming, oh no, Rome wants to conquer us all, those are merely territories that the Romans would dream to control. The Romans are not actively expansionist and they won't try to go on a conquest spree. They are mostly interested in internal changes and in improving their diplomatic relations with most of their neighbors.

Capital City : Constantinople, the New Rome, the Second Rome, the Eastern Rome, Roma Constantinopolitana, the Queen of Cities, the Reigning City, the City, the God-Guarded City, the Eye of the World, the Envy of the World, the City of the World's Desire, the City of Sins, Byzantium. One of the greatest cities of Europe, spread along both sides of the Bosporus, the ancient city continues to impress and amaze. The center and the capital of the Roman Empire, the city of Constantine is the largest and best known city of the Romans.

Population:
  • Around 20 million in my homelands, Greece, Thrace, and Asia Minor. Based upon the 12 million population of the Byzantines around the year 1000, plus a high increase of the population based on the already existing high Byzantine population growth rate at the time, due to better standards that the rest of Europe, and the lack of any real life events or catastrophes to affect the Byzantine population.
  • 3.744.283 historical population of Bulgaria in 1900.
  • 300,000 in the region of Scythia (Minor), real life Dobrogea.
  • Roughly 5 million in Syria and Mesopotamia
  • Roughly 10 million in Egypt
  • 200,000 in Roman Cyrenaica
  • 800,000 in Roman Nubia
  • Roughly 40,044,283 as the entire population of the Roman Empire.

Government Type : The Roman Government is pretty mixed, really. At least in name, it is a Cesaropapist Absolute Monarchy, with the Emperor holding the supreme authority in both secular and religious matters. But in practice, the Roman Government is built upon the balance between the three powers of the state, the Emperor, the Senate, and the People of Rome. As such, Having a complex bureaucracy and a large system of titles inherited from various types of government that have existed from the ancient Roman era to the present date, the Roman Government is however highly efficient, organized, pragmatic, and meticulous, playing an important role in the Roman state.
Government Ideology/Policies : Imperialism, Conservatism, Roman Nationalism, Orthodox Traditionalism, Irredentism, Pragmatism
Government Focus : The Roman Government is currently focusing on bringing the Roman Empire in line with the great powers of this world from all points of view.
Head of State : His Imperial Majesty, Iulius Palaeologus Felix, in Christ Emperor and Autocrat of the Romans, Despot of all of the Lands of the Eternal Rome, the Empire Without End, Forever Augustus, Caesar, Dominus and Princeps, Viceroy of Jesus Christ on Earth, Pius Felix, Defender of the True Faith, Great Protector of the Holy Cities of Constantinople, Rome, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria, Princeps of the West and the East, Princeps of the Mare Nostrum, Great Protector of Aegyptus and Nubia, Rex of Greece, Anatolia, Moesia, Dalmatia, Armenia, Georgia, Syria, and Mesopotamia, Magnus Dux of Thrace, Cyprus, and Crete, Dominus of Taurica, Babylon and of the Sinai, Princeps Senatus and Tribunicia Potestas, Invictus, Pater Patriae, Nobilissimus, Sovereign of the Holy Order of the True Cross, Grand Master of the Order of Saint Andrew, of the Order of Constantine the Great and of the Order of Justinian the Great, Emperor of Emperors, King of Kings, Ruling Over Those Who Rule.
Head of Government : Great Logothete and Princeps Senatus Alexander Cantacuzenus
Government Description:
The Roman Government is in name, a Cesaropapist Absolute Monarchy, but in fact, it is more of a mixed government, formed by the balance of the three main powers. The element of monarchy is of course, represented by the Emperor, the oligarchic element is represented by the Senate, and the democratic element is represented by the elections and the great public gatherings of the assemblies. A small theocratic element also exists in the form of the Roman Orthodox Church, represented through the Four Patriarchies under Roman control, which have a lot of influence in the Empire's affairs.
Despite the unrestricted power of the Emperor which makes it an absolute monarchy, the Roman Empire has a constitution, the Politeia Romanorum (The Constitution of the Romans), which is organized in multiple principles known as the Pronuntiatios (Pronunciations). The Constitution was officially adopted in 1848, and its purpose is to guarantee Roman citizens certain inalienable rights against any oppression, and to keep the balance between the three main powers of the Roman State.

The first and most important power belongs to the Emperor, Known by various titles, like Imperator, Caesar, Augustus, Autocrator, Dominus, or Princeps, the Emperor has the supreme authority in both secular and religious matters, acting like a true absolute monarch. He governs the Imperium (the Empire), under his supreme executive power (imperium maius), his primary legislative authority (auctoritas principis), and his divine mandate (jure divis) as Viceroy of Jesus Christ. The political powers of the other magistrates are subsidiary to and derived from those of the Emperor, as he stands on the top of the Roman state's hierarchy. He is unquestionable, and he can theoretically dissolve the Senate at any moment's notice (even if that is currently practically impossible). The Emperor is also in charge of naming the military commanders of all provinces, and through his power to command, the imperium, he is also the supreme commander of the military. From nearly all points of view, he is an absolute monarch, and his rights and attributions are outlined in the Law of the Emperor (Lex Augustis), one of the Pronunciations of the Roman Constitution. Violating his sacrosanctity is considered to be the highest form sacrilege and treason - punishable by death.

The Roman Empire has a complicated succession system, mostly inherited from the Ancient and Medieval eras of the Imperium. At least in theory, the succession to the imperial throne is made after the agnatic-cognatic primogeniture system. The oldest child of the ruler inherits all titles, and women are able to gain the imperial throne if there are no eligible males. The succession is also dynastic, for a ruler to inherit the throne, he or she has to be blood-connected to the Palaeologus Dynasty. However, the Roman system has certain particularities which make the succession pretty complicated.

The first particularity is the existence of the purple-born system. The system of Porphyrogenitus, means that children born under certain conditions can have a higher position in the line of succession. For a prince or princess of the imperial family to be purple-born, they must respect certain conditions. The child has to be legitimate, born in the Purple Room of the Great Palace of Constantinople. The child's father must be a reigning Emperor, and the child's mother must be an Empress, married to the Emperor. The Empress also must have undergone a formal, sacred ceremony creating her an Augusta. Children who meet all these conditions receive the honorary title of Porphyrogenitus, and they rank higher in the succession line than those who don't, like children born to an Emperor before his coronation, children who weren't born in Constantinople, or children who were born to a concubine.

The other particularity is that the Emperors are able to nominate their successors, even if those successors are not in line with the agnatic-cognatic primogeniture system - the only requirement is for them to be a part of the dynasty. Successors are normally nominated by being awarded important titles, like the title of Despot. It has already become a custom for the Emperor to nominate his successor by awarding him or her the title of Despot or Despotess of the Morea.
The other way for an Emperor to nominate his successor is to raise a member of the dynasty to the rank of co-emperor. A co-emperor is the awarded the title of Caesar, ranking immediately below the original Emperor. As such, when the older emperor eventually died his successor would already be crowned and have experience at ruling, decreasing the risk of rebellion or usurpation. This practice has however fallen out of use due to the internal stability that the Imperium has been experiencing for the past few centuries.

The second power in the Roman State is formed by the Roman Senate (Senatus Romanum), the assembly of the Roman senators. Elected by Roman citizens once every five years, the Senate acts like the Parliaments of other countries, having a large legislative power, while also having a role in governing the Empire. Traditionally, the Senate has been a place of the patricians, the aristocracy, and that is visible even today, as the largest political faction of the Senate represents the nobility. But over the past two centuries, series of reforms have led to the plebeians entering the Senate, and currently, the second largest political faction of the Senate represents the interests of the general population. The Emperor has the theoretical power to dissolve the Senate at will, but considering the large political power of the Senate, it has become practically impossible for Emperors to do so. The Senate itself has the power to protest against the Emperor's decisions, if it believs that they are against the better good of the People of Rome, even if their protests can not directly challenge the imperial authority. The Senate is bicameral. The Lower House is the Comitia Curiata (Curiate Assembly) but tradition is to refer to it as the Curia (the Assembly). The members of the Assembly are referred to as Senatores Curiae (Senators of the Curia). The Upper House is the Magnum Concilium (the Great Council). Members of Council are Senatores Concilii (Senators of the Council).
The Senate has three leaders. The first two are known as the Consuls (Consules), chosen once every eight months. They are not like those who bore that title during the ancient Roman Republic. They simply supervise and organize the debates and the affairs of the Senate, one assigned to each chamber. The third leader is the Grand Logothete (Magnum Logotheta), the leader of the Roman Government, the equivalent of the Prime Minister of various democratic nations. He is chosen by the Emperor and confirmed by the Senate once every five years. His role is to supervise and coordinate the departments of the government, which are led by the Logothetes (Logothetae), who are also chosen by the Emperor from among the senators, acting like ministers.

The third power in the state belongs to the common citizens, the People of Rome, or the Roman People (Populus Romanus). Their power is exercised through the right of assembly. Choices that must be made by the people are debated and voted on in large public assemblies. Anyone with the Roman citizenship who takes part in such an assembly gets on vote. A single conglomeration of voting citizens making a legally potent action is a Popular Assembly (Comitia Popula), and all these assemblies are known together as the Plebeian Councils (Concilia Plebium).
The Roman citizens enjoy extensive rights and obligations, and from this point of view, although they live in an absolute monarchy, the Roman citizens sometimes enjoy more freedom than the citizens of many other nations. Civitatem Romanum (the Roman Citizenship) is the individual possession of every man and woman recognized as such by the Roman Senate. For a person to be a civis Romanus(Roman citizen) they must be 16 years of age or older and they must satisfy one of the following conditions:
  • To be born to two Roman citizens.
  • To be born to one Roman citizen within a Roman province and to have served a set term in the Roman military.
  • To be recognized as a citizen by the Emperor or the Senate.
The citizenship of a Roman citizen is irrevocable without extreme violations of the Empire's laws and regulations. The Roman citizens officially enjoy religious freedom as long as as long as they respect the Emperor, the Empire and its authority (despite strong unofficial efforts of the Empire to eradicate heresies such as Islam and Oriental Christianity), and they can vote and be elected in the Roman Senate or in any other positions in the imperial administration. While in Roman territory, citizens of nations allied to Rome, commonly referred to as Allies (Socii), receive certain rights, similar to a limited form of citizenship, which has encouraged foreign immigration from friendly nations. However, all foreigners on Roman territory have certain inalienable rights, and one of them is the right to their freedom - slavery is illegal in the Roman Empire, and capturing people to be sold as slaves, selling slaves, and owning slaves are condemned by death in all circumstances.

The fourth, unofficial power is represented by the Roman Orthodox Church. The Roman Orthodoxy is the official religion of the Roman Empire, and the Four Patriarchs must be confirmed by the Emperor before being chosen. In exchange for the protection of the Emperor, the Orthodox Church continues to recognize the Roman Emperor as the Viceroy of Jesus Christ on Earth, and the Roman Empire as the true successor of the Roman Empire of old.

As such, the Roman Empire exists due to the balance between the Emperor, the Senate, and the People of Rome (Imperator Senatusque Populusque Romanus), under the blessings of the Roman Church (Ecclesia Romanum).

Majority/State Religion: The Eastern/Roman Orthodox Church is the largest religion of the Roman Empire, but other religions are more or less tolerated, and the citizens of the Roman Empire have a certain religious freedom, as long as they do not oppose the Empire. The last decades have however been marked by a strong, unofficial attempt to eliminate heresies, like Islam and the various Oriental Churches.
Religious Description: The Roman or Eastern Orthodoxy, a one of the two Christian religions that had appeared as a result of the Great Schism in 1054. The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Church practices what it understands to be the original faith passed down from the Apostles. The Church is led by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who is recognized as "primus inter pares"(first among equals) between all the Orthodox bishops and patriarchs, being formally recognized as the leader of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Church. Besides from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the other Patriarchates under Roman control as the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, and the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. The Emperor, from his position as the supreme authority in both secular and religious matters, is considered to be divinely ordained, as the Viceroy of Jesus Christ on Earth, and all Patriarchs must receive the imperial confirmation before taking their positions.

Economic Ideologies: The Roman Empire has a capitalist economy, but the state has a strong control over it.
Major Production: Agricultural products, iron, coal, minerals, silk, clothing, oil, some industrial products.
Economic Description: The Roman Empire continues to have a mostly agrarian economy, but the reforms of the last decades have brought it in line with the West. A regional economic power, the Roman Empire also profits from a relatively strong industry, supported and expanded with the help of the state, an industry which, even if unable to match the level of the Western nations, due to a dependency on some imported resources, is still quite impressive on its own. Also, due to its good position, its ownership over the Dardanelles, the Bosporus, and the Suez, and its agreements with various foreign nations, the Roman Empire is a trade hub between Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Tech Level: 8, slowly moving to 9.

Army Strength: The Imperial Roman Army enjoys an extremely strict discipline, the famous Roman discipline that is well known throughout throughout the world. Every Roman legionnaire is highly trained and extremely loyal, and the Roman military units are really well known for their high morale and fanaticism. An experienced and professional officer corps, a straight forward command line a good organization, and a general pragmatism and meticulousness are all various advantages of the Romans. The Romans are also well known for using original weapons that help them gain the advantage on the battlefield, like the flamethrowers that use Roman Fire, and for employing various elite units, like the Varangian Guard made out of foreign soldiers, and the native Palatine Schools.
Army Weakness: Despite being on a technological level close to that of the Western nations, the Romans still suffer from various problems. The main problem is the very elite status of their legionnaires. Their extremely long training makes them difficult to create and to replace, and their moderate population also doesn't help, meaning that the Romans will be at a numerical disadvantage against some of its neighbors. As such, the Romans have created a system which uses conscripted soldiers as auxiliaries, but those auxiliary forces are not as well trained or as well equipped as the main legionnaires, meaning that even if the auxiliaries enjoy the same level of morale and loyalty, they are weaker than the normal Roman soldiers. The Roman High Command and the Roman Officer corps are also highly conservative, and they might often underestimate their enemies. In case of war, Roman strategies are mostly based either on defensive operations which put emphasis on defensive actions on natural borders and fortified areas, and on calm and structured conquests. Also, the Roman military organization, despite being pragmatic and well made, is however pretty rigid. Independent thinking is not encouraged, and superior officers are always considered to be right.
Naval Strength: The Imperial Roman Navy is the main naval force of the Roman Empire. Due to continuous attempts of reforms over the past century, today the Roman Navy is a sizable force in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, in the Black Sea, the Persian Gulf and in the Red Sea, where it has the objective to protect the interests and coasts of the Roman Empire, and of course, the straits and canals that the Roman Empire controls. The Roman Navy is currently a combination of modern and modernized ships, but it still remains a force that would deter anyone from attacking the Empire without thinking twice. The high technological level of the Empire is especially seen in its navy, which also enjoys an excellent discipline among its men, a high grade of training and experience. The Roman Navy also secret weapon of the old Roman navies, the Greek or the Roman Fire, an extremely inflammable substance that can even burn on water, making in a somewhat useful but dangerous weapon. It is mostly employed on naval and coastal fortifications, and in defensive operations.
Naval Weakness: Despite being technologically advanced, the Roman Navy is not exactly the most technologically advanced fleet around, and the discovery of a new type of ship in the near future might deal it a big blow. The Roman Navy also mostly serves a defensive purpose, which is a double-edged sword. While it is extremely good at protecting the Roman territorial waters and coasts, the Roman Navy will never be able to fight on the same level as a blue-water navy, and because it is stuck on a defensive role, it will never gain the experience that such navies have. The rigidity and conservatism of its High Command and of its command line and organization are also major weaknesses.
Further Military Description:
The Imperial Roman Army([Exercitus Romanorum, literally the Army of the Romans) is the main military force of the Roman Empire. The Exercitus is organized in legions (Legiones, singular Legio) Each legion is under the command of a Legate, and in times of peace, the legions in a province are subordinated to the military commander of the province, the Dux. The Imperial Roman Army also uses the services of the Auxilia (Auxiliaries), a conscripted force of soldiers, pretty much like a militia, called upon in times of war. The Auxilia does not use the legion system, its largest unit type being the Cohors (Cohort). Auxiliaries are poorly armed and poorly trained when compared to the basic legionnaires, and as their name suggests, they are used in auxiliary positions, in order to support the normal Roman units. During a conflict, the legions have priority in terms of equipment, and supplies. However, if an auxiliary unit reaches a necessary level of experience, and if it is distinguished in combat, it might be moved under the command of the regular army and turned into a regular unit.
The Imperial Roman Guards, are the elite troops of the Roman Empire, the most disciplined and the best trained men in the Imperium. They are divided in two organizations, with similar but overall different purposes. The Varangian Guard (Custodia Varegiae) is the Emperor's personal guard, under his direct command. The Varangians are mostly of Western or Nordic origin, as being in the Varangian Guard is usually a honor transmitted from father to son. The recruits for the Varangian Guard have to meet several requirements, and they are carefully selected, before going through an extensive and harsh training. While a small part of the Varangians are always with the Emperor, being his personal guard, the rest are used as elite troops in difficult situations. The other organization is formed by the Palatine Schools (Scholae Palatinae). Still considered elite troops, with an excellent discipline, the main difference between the Scholares and the Varangians is that the Scholae are opened to all Roman recruits that meet the requirements and pass the tests. A small part of the Scholares are sometimes used to guard foreign officials while in the Empire, but they are mostly used in combat. The Exercitus is also sometimes employing mercenaries and irregulars, that are overall known as the Foederati.

The Imperial Roman Navy (Classis Romanorum, literally the Fleet of the Romans) is the naval force of the Roman Empire. Protecting the Empire's waters, coasts, and interests, the Classis is mainly based in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and in the Black Sea, with a presence in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf.

National Goals: Gaining new allies, completing the modernization of the Roman Empire, maintaining and if possible, strengthening the Roman Hegemony in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and in the Black Sea.
National Issues: A heavy and cumbersome bureaucracy and administration, tensions between the aristocracy and the general population, a general desire for more modernization conflicting with the conservatism of some people, conflicts with some the neighbors, religious tensions between Orthodox Christians, Oriental Christians, and Muslims, a resistance against Romanization of parts of Africa and the Middle East, differences between more developed regions and those who are still underdeveloped, and a rather heavy to defend regional position.
National Figures of Interest: Emperor Iulius Palaeologus, Prince Constantine Palaeologus, Prince Alexander Palaeologos, Princess Sophia Palaelologos, Grand Logothete Alexander Velsagio, Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim III the Magnificent and a ton of historical figures.
National Ambition/Aspirations: Finishing the modernization process, heavily expanding the railway network of the Empire, developing the Roman oil industry, being recognized as the one, true Roman Empire, the successor to both the Ancient Rome and the Hellenistic World, repairing relations with some of the Empire's neighbors, if possible, regain influence over some of the former Eastern Roman territories, trying to mend the West-East Schism and the Schism between Orthodoxy and Oriental Orthodoxy.

History:
  • Everything starts in 476 A.D. On the 4th of September, the barbarian General Odoacer forced Romulus Augustulus, the last Western Roman Emperor, do abdicate, a few days after the death of the last other Western Imperial pretender, Julius Nepos. While the Western Roman Empire split itself to pieces, abandoning Rome, and having no remaining Emperors, the righteous looked East... where the spirit of Rome prospered in the Eastern Roman Empire, with the capital in Constantinople. That's where Odoacer send the Imperial insignia. Upon receiving them, the Eastern Emperor Zeno proclaimed the end of the Western line of Roman Emperors, and proclaimed himself the single Emperor of Rome, ruling over both the East, and the West, in the point that is usually considered by modern historians to be the birth of a new Roman Empire. Zeno sends forces to Southern Italy, but due to problems at the Empire's Eastern borders, never manages to advance into northern Italy. The Kingdom of Italia is formed, in 490 and in the rest of Italy, various kingdoms fight for power He is succeeded by Flavius Anastasius Augustus, who starts to strengthen the vassal Kingdom of Italy.
  • In 540 A.D., Rome is retaken by the combined Roman and native Italian forces. With the decisive help of the Roman troops led by General Belisarius, the Italians push the barbarians out of Italy and claim it all, reaching the Alps in 560.
  • Under Justinian, the Roman Empire recovers the Mediterranean, Italy as a vassal state, Northern Africa, southern Spain, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica. For the reign of "the emperor that never slept", the Roman Empire reached its largest territorial expansion after the Fall of Rome, an age of glory and splendor, to be remembered for millennia. The Imperium returned to the position of the dominant power in Europe, regained control over the Mediterranean Sea and over Rome itself. But, in his efforts to renew the Roman Empire, Justinian dangerously stretched its resources while failing to take into account the changed realities of 6th-century Europe. Paradoxically, the grand scale of Justinian's military successes probably contributed in part to the Empire's subsequent decline. Natural disasters and the Plague of Justinian weakened the empire in the later half of the Emperor's rule. Justinian the Great died on the 15th of November 565 A.D. The time of glory had ended.
  • In 568 A.D., three years after the death of Justinian, the Lombards invaded Northern Italy. War with the Sassanids in the East weakened the Empire, leaving the Italians to fight on their own. The Kingdom of Italy becomes largely autonomous. Emperor Justin II failed to defend the declining Empire, which was assaulted from all sides. Emperor Tiberius later improved the situation, with Emperor Maurice defeating the Sassanids and strengthening the Roman rule in Africa and Italy, although Spain was lost. But in 602 A.D., Emperor Maurice died without an heir, and the Empire chose Emperor Heraclius, who restored the power of Constantinople, fighting the Sassanids before making a final peace with them, but the war itself meant that the Roman Empire had no way to oppose what happened in Italy in 624 A.D., when the Italians threw out the forces of the Roman Empire, breaking their pledge of loyalty to the Roman Emperor. Italy was forever lost. In face of that, Emperor Heraclius never changed the official language of the Empire, reorganizing it in a new provincial system and starting an aggressive Romanization process that would be followed by his successors. But there was another treat rising on. The Muslims.
  • In 627 A.D., the Muslim armies entered the Roman Syria, where they defeated the Emperor's brother in a brutal battle. Convinced of the need to stop these new invaders, Heraclius proposed an alliance between the Romans and the Persians, which together, stopped the Muslim advance, defeating the Caliphate's forces, throwing them back into Arabia. Unfortunately, the Muslims still managed to expand into Africa, and the Romans lost Egypt. Heraclius died in 641, leaving a changed Empire behind him.
  • Over the following centuries, the aggressive Romanization and Latinization process started by Heraclius is continued by nearly all his successors, as the Latin language replacedthe Greek language nearly everywhere. Combined with a reduction of the Empire's borders, which reduced ethnic diversity and overextension, these changes managed to create a coagulated Roman culture, especially in Greece and in Asia Minor.
  • But in 800 AD, the Pope, taking advantage of the weakness of the ruler of the Roman Empire, who was unfortunately, a female, Imperatrix Irene, crowned Charlemagne, the King of the Franks, as Emperor of the Romans, effectively challenging the rule of the Emperors of Constantinople. This event marked the start of the West-East rivalry that continues to the present day.
  • In 917, the Bulgarians invaded the Roman Empire, defeating all the Imperial forces sent to fight them, putting Constantinople itself in danger as they besieged it in 930. Through what could be called a miracle, Constantinople survived, but the Balkan provinces of the Empire seemed to be lost forever...
  • And yet in 976 A.D., Basil II became Emperor. One of the greatest Roman Emperors of all time, Basil lead the Imperium with an iron first, defeating and slaughtering the Bulgarians, bringing them and their lands back in the Empire, gaining the nickname "the Bulgar Slayer". But after his death, the Imperium declined, and a new threat appeared, the Turks.
  • Tensions between the Catholic and the Orthodox parts of the Christian Church reached an all time high, and in 1054, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and the Pope of Rome excommunicated each other, creating the West-East Schism, and officially breaking the Christian Church into the Orthodox and the Catholic Church. The Roman Empire became more and more isolationist.
  • The Seljuk Turks attacked Asia Minor, defeating the Imperial armies sent to fight them. Emperor Romanos asked for the help of the Persians, and together, the Roman-Persian armies defeated the Seljuk forces at the Battle of Manzikert, later pushing them out of Asia Minor and slaughtering a large part of the Turkish population. A second Turkish invasion was halted in 1179 A.D., and once again with Persian help, the Seljuk Turks were finally defeated in the the Battle of Myriokephalon.
