Bundeshaus
Frankfurt
Federal Republic of Germany

1948

The city streets of Frankfurt were filled with noise; Shouts, Yells, and the sound of engines. The people didn't seem to care, they just went on with life as normal, their time living in the city having aclimated them to it all. One person who was not aclimated to it, was Theodor Heuss, the President of West Germany. He sat inside the spacious interior of his Rolls Royce, across from him was Konrad Adenauer, Chancellor of West Germany.

The car sat still, as traffic along the main street had stalled to a sluggish pace. Just at the end of it Heuss could see their destination, the Bundeshaus, the Parliament House. The Cars cabin was filled with the furious sound of rustling papers as Adenauer looked over the papers of his speech, scribling notes here and there, even going as far to toss entire pages out the window. Heuss simply smirked, looking out the window instead, a block of color catching his eye. The German Flag, the flag that he and those other pioneers choose when they created this country.

He closed his eyes, thinking back to the events of last year. He'd stood up before the UN, and lobbied for months for recognition of West German Independence. Months and Months of world had finally paid off when a commitee of German Representatives, the joint US-British Occupation Government and the French Occupational Government met in Frankfurt to outline a consitution for a West Germany Government. On that day, the Federal Republic of Germany was created.

Elections had been held, and by Christmas the final member of government was voted into office.

"How did your meeting with the SDO go?"

Heuss was shaken from his thoughts as Adenauer now addressed him. The SDO... An audiable sigh escaped Heuss's lips, he really didn't want to work with the SDO. He'd been elected on a platform of "Germany First", of rebuilding the German economy and nation back to its former strength. He'd adovcated to the Federal Diet for Neutrality, but in the end both the Diet and the Council had voted in majority to open talks with the SDO. Adenauer had been quite pleased, he'd always been Heuss's polar opposite. Where Heuss preached Neutrality, Adenauer preached for involvement with the Western Powers.

"It went well. They've agreed to take us on as a member state, and we sign ourself to their treaty. It seems your first wish has been granted, lets see if you get your second"

His "Second Wish", which Heuss mentioned was a piece of legislation that Adenauer had proposed to the Federal Council; a bill that authorized the Chancellor to create a National Army, the Bundeswehr, Federal Defense Force. The bill called for the establishment of a Streitkräftebasis, or Joint Support Service (High Command), and a Ministry of Defense. The Ministry would then raise an Army (Heer) of "12 Infantry Divisions, 6 Panzer Divisions, 2 Mechanized Infantry Divisions, 1 Airborne Division and 1 Alpine Division", a Navy (Bundesmarine) of "No more than 16,000 Sailors, 65 ships and 55 Aircraft", and a Airforce (Luftwaffe) of "No more than 20,000 Airmen and 400 Aircraft".

It was quite the contorversial bill, as many saw this as "too soon", seeing as only a handful of years earlier German Military build up had led to a world war. However, many (Including Adenauer espesically) were gripped with fear from the possibility of an invasion by the USSR to put West Germany under the control of the German Democratic Republic. This fear was was Adenauer's greatest weapon, and he planned to use it to its fullest extent when he spoke to the Federal Council today, even if it alienated those of the Communist Party.

"Heuss, the members of the Council and myself all see that a Armed Force is the best way to ensure our safety."

"Not all members, the Communists will oppose you, maybe even the Social Democrats."

"The Social Democrats will vote with us Heuss, they've heard the stories from East Germany, and so have the rest of the Council and the Diet. This bill shall pass, even if its the last thing i ever do."

The car came to a stop in front of the Bundeshaus, and two footmen opened the doors for them. Greeting them was a crowd of German Citizens, who began to cheer as their two Executives came into view. Camera's flashed and reporters shouted at the top of their lungs as the two middled aged politicians climbed the steps to the large grey building, the building where Germanies future has and will be decided in.

BUNDESWEHR BILL PASSED
By Reinhard Raupach
Image

Yesterday, January 20th of the year 1948, Bill number Four passed with majority support in both the Bundestag and the Bundestraat. The bill has officially established a Federal Defense Force, officially named Bundeswehr for the Federal Republic. President Heuss said in a press meeting after the passing of the bill, that he would "Comply with the wishes of the Bundestag and Bundestraat, in creating a Joint Support Service and Ministry of Defense", which would then raise a Force of over 400,000 Men. The JSS would be lead by a "Chief Inspector of the Bundeswehr", while the MoD would be lead by a Minister. While no recommendations or appointments have been made, many point to Adolf Heusinger as the most likely choice for the Chief Inspector and Theodor Blank for Minister of Defense. Many within the public, primarily from the Social Democracy Party and the Communist Party have cried out, stating that remilitarization is the exact thing that led to the horrors of the Second World War, while others point out that Germany currently has no force to defend itself, short of the Border Guards.

Beijing Airport

Air Force One slowed down on the airstrip, the Honor Guard rolled out the red carpet, and finally came to good order. At the end of the carpet was President Chiang and Madame Chiang. Behind the ranks of the honor guard was the military orchestra, and the Honor Guard stood at attention, holding M1 Garands. As the plane came to a full stop and slowly moved to the where the guard was. Chiang waited nervously, he really did hope everything would go to plan. As the door opened, Chiang and Madame Chiang walked to the end of the carpet, right in front of the plane. Chiang wore a military uniform and a Western style military peaked cap. Madame Chiang wore a more formal version of the dress she had worn to make a speech at Wellesley College in America five years earlier. As the President of the United States of America Harry Truman emerged, Chiang smiled. And as Harry and Bess Truman got down the flight of stairs from the plane, Chiang greeted him with a handshake and a smile, and Madame Chiang greeted Bess.
"Welcome to China!" They walked with them down the red carpet. The Honor Guard presenting arms as they walked. As they reached the end of the carpet they stopped. Two flagpoles to the side of the carpet did not have flags. The orchestra began to play the Star Spangled Banner as the flag of the United States of America was raised. Chiang and Madame Chiang stood politely and silently, their eyes watching the flag go up. As the Star Spangled Banner ended, the Honor Guard prepared to send up another flag. That of the Republic of China. The orchestra began to play the National Flag Anthem of China, different from the anthem. It had come of a feud in government over the national anthem in the 30s. Chiang did a military salute, and so did the Honor Guard. Madame Chiang did a military salute as well, she had been "Deputy Commander" of the Chinese Air Force during the war. As the anthem ended and both flags were raised. Chiang guided the President to the car. "I'll have the pleasure of taking you to where you are staying for you to get settled. I'll also be greeting the British Prime Minister." The car cruised through the Beijing streets, on the way to exquisite hotel Madame Chiang had handpicked for the President. "How is American politics Mr. President, I hear it can be a real nightmare sometimes?"

Ministry for State Security, Building One, East Berlin, GDR
Kommisar Erich Mielke, Stasi Official of German Operations

The streets were bustling with activity around the government offices in East Berlin, as East German soldiers and border guards patrolled the streets, keeping peace and order in the rough streets. As Kommisar Erich Mielke peered out the rear passenger window of his state-issued Mercedez-Benz 770, recently Mielke had been promoted to the head of the Stasi, or the Ministry of State Security, the one force that held the country together, primarily through fear and efficiency, as the party had purged the previous Komisar, Wilhelm Zaisser, who had fled into hiding, but not before missing several bullets from the agency. Besides that, the Komisar had little to worry about, as the Soviets appeared to be pleased with the East Germans, as the Russkies took Germany's finest minds to aid in the development of their nuclear weapons program. The other hot topic was West Germany's announcement of the formation of the Bundeswehr, which Premier Pieck would give a response to the passage of the law later in the day.

The Mercedes stopped as it approached the gates of the Ministry building, with an armed guard, wielding a StG44 opening the door for Mielke and saluting. The compound was well guarded, with a 5-metre wall around the compound, several snipers on the rooftops, and heavily armed guards at the gate, the State spared little expense in the protection of the secret police building. Mielke walked past the gates with relative ease, flashing his identity card, a quick stroll through the well-maintained garden, and through the thick mahogany and iron doors, to the marble floors and the sounds of footsteps echoing through the building, tapping of typewriters, and radios playing inspirational messages from the head of the party.

Komissar Mielke turned into a side door, that went to another door guarded by a guard, to a staircase, that led downwards towards a drab looking room, lit by a single lightbulb, illuminating a lifeless door a metal plaque was drilled to the wall, with the words "DIE ROTE KAPELLE" or, "The Red Orchestra" a new office wing in the Stasi office, recently started by Mielke to start surveillance and physical operations in West Germany, to subvert and sow dissent amongst the population, as well as a smaller wing for counter-espionage and surveillance in the East Germany and East Austria. Opening the door opened up a large sound of activity as workers set up desks and placed filing cabinets, installing the wire-tapping room, a fantastic site, but one that wouldn't be operational until at least spring. The Red Orchestra would change the face of the Stasi forever, towards a much more aggressive state in the world of espionage, with a possibility of moving towards foreign operations as well. The Komissar directed the workers.

Volkskammer, People's Chamber, East Berlin, GDR
Premier Wilhelm Pieck, Premier of the German Democratic Republic

The chamber was full in response to the Bundeswehr bill, the majority voice was that it was a threat to the German Democratic Republic and one that would require an action as border units were put on alert to any actions at the border.

Hello, the state of affairs in the German state is fairly well, but we are concerned deeply with the West German military being approved, we are requesting an action from the Soviet government in response to the move from Frankfurt. If you would like to have a meeting face-to-face I will speak to my office about possible dates as I would like to discuss possible investments in the East German economy, and with that, I'd like to thank you for your continued support of East Germany.

West German Moves Eyed With Suspicion, Lavrentiy Beria: "We are perhaps a year away from an atomic bomb"

The West German Government has created its own military recently, a move that is seen as a significant provocation to the USSR and its East German allies. The Soviet Government has stated that "Western Military posturing shall be interpreted as a threat to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and her allies." The governments of other European States in the Warsaw Pact have also been informed about the situation. Almost right after the West German announcement, Hungary announced an investment in its military as well as Czechoslovakia. The Red Army has dispatched groups of IS-3 Tanks to the border to Western Germany as well as the significant amounts of T-34-85 tanks already there. Two divisions of ground troops have also been dispatched to the GDR-West Germany border.

In an interview with Soviet National Television, Lavrentiy Beria, the director of Soviet Atom Bomb project commented on recent progress. Beria stated that the USSR is "perhaps a year away" from a Nuclear Bomb. The Z-3 Craft, modeled off of the Z-2 which famously broke the American altitude record, has been discussed as a possible delivery method for an atomic bomb. Experiments are already underway to test if designs based on the German V-1 would be practical for use.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

To, Komissar Lothar Bolz, GDR Foreign Minister

From the office of Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union, Vyacheslav Molotov

Hello. The Soviet Government after my input has dispatched significant military reinforcements to the already existing forces in East Germany. The West German provocation has not been taken lightly in Moscow, and there is talk of demanding the West German state disband its military should provocations continue. Investment in the East German economy will follow with the construction of new rail roads started last year, and the restoration of cities and industry in the GDR. Personally, I would like to advise your government to invest in its own professional military as significant amounts of surplus Soviet Units of good quality are being sold as fast as possible by the Red Army. At certain bases, they have no room to store all the tanks they have! The USSR is glad to help your country, and will continue to do so as long as the flag of the GDR is flying.

Palais Bourbon, Paris, France, January 8th 1948

Image

Léopold Sédar Senghor representative of the newly founded Senegalese Socialist Democratic Bloc stood before the delegates of the National Assembly of France. Today discussion was an arduous one- conservatives and parts of Christian-Democratic Party spoke bitterly against Thorez's proposal for French colonial holdings. Proposal was made after long discussion with local leaders in Africa, Pacific and Indo-China and it was rather simple: French colonies that have managed to develop strong socialist movements are to be granted full independence. Their communist parties are to receive vast financial and military aid. Then economical and military union of those lands will be proposed. French Empire will thus be replaced by sort of "French Union of Soviet Socialist Republics." Those colonies that decide not to follow the path of socialism will of course, be allowed to follow their own way, which might lead them away from France. Sédar Senghor knew that, but he believed that future of small African countries is still connected to France- their ancestors were colonial conquerors and imperialists but PCF promised new future for Africa- one that was based on democracy and care for the working men. He cleared his throat and spoke.

"Delegates of the National Assembly, esteemed comrades:

Today you will raise your hands and vote on the destiny of many a working man: on the destiny of a starving African farmer, on a fate of Polynesian fisherman and Cambodian basket-weaver. Even the most patriotic ones among yourselves will admit that France have played an unfortunate role in the lives of those people. But initiative of the PCF might reverse that role and turn France into a beacon of hope for oppressed people of the world."

There was clamor as he finished his speech.

Later, when he entered black ZIS 101 limousine that took him to the airport he couldn't hide a smile from his lips. After long silence, his chauffeur finally asked.

"You are looking satisfied, comrade Senghor. Everything went out fine?"

"It did, Julien." Sangor was on friendly terms with his chauffeur. During his long trips they were often the only two Senegalese people out there. "The so called "Bill of Union was passed. However we have a long way to go from there. It has to be ratified by President of France and then the summit of elected representatives of French colonial territories is to be held in Dakar. Future face of a big apple-pie slice of world will be decided there."

"I always wondered why do politicians argue like children when there0's enough pie to go around?"

"Capitalism, dear Julien. Because of Capitalism"

The Élysée Palace, Paris, France

Leon Blum felt too old for this. In times of post- war strife he accepted offer of his party to run for presidency- he was considered one of the rare polititians who was acceptable to both PCF and SFIO as president. Country needed the powerful unifying figure once again, and he decided to sacrifice his peace, although he had grave doubts that he can perform his duty in the world of politics that was getting stranger and more paranoid every day. Communist proposal to reorganize the French colonial holding into a vast decentralized union had passed the assembly yesterday by only nine votes- Léopold Sédar Senghor and his colleges from SDS were crucial in that. Blum ratified the deal- he considered it unwise to risk further divisions by going against the wish of his party and National Assembly and called for great summit in September. This is going to be the beginning of serious problems for ruling coalition- those colonies that elected left- leaning representatives will probably form an union with France, but some of them- Djibouti, Algiers and maybe even Corsica- might secede altogether and refuse to join Socialist Union with France- especially with Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and South Africa offering some new post-colonial alternatives to socialism. And let's not forget China...

Thorez's policy towards China was confusing to Blum; it seemed like he wanted cordial relations with both USSR and China. But it seemed that the conflict between them seems unavoidable if China continues to ban communist movements in it's territory. The old man, who used to be one of Europe's brightest leaders sat down and wrote two short communiques:

From: Leon Blum president of Socialist Republic of France
To: Elected delegates of French overseas possessions

Esteemed delegates
I have honor to invite you to the summit of Free Nations of France in the city of Dakar to discuss the future of relations between your people and the Socialist Republic of France. Only delegates elected in the democratic elections will have right to participate.

From: Leon Blum president of Socialist Republic of France
To: Josif Visarionovich Geugashvilly Stalin

Esteemed comrade. i wish to congratulate you on the convincing victory in the upcoming elections. I'm looking forward to our continuing alliance. I would also like to inform you that ten doctors, trained as spied have been sent to rural parts of China to aid with elimination of the consequences of wartime destruction. However, they have another task- to locate comrade Mao and rest of the surviving members of socialist resistance. Prime minister Thorez considers it important that we continue our contact with Chinese communist underground.

Somewhere of the coast of Australia

Captain Pierre Pélissier and crew of "Laubie" was engaged with the duty of tracking Australian warships. Blunt refusal of Australian representatives to recognize sovereignty of Vietnam was a reason for worry in Saigon. So several of the captured German U-boats had been tasked to keep an eye on the Australian fleet. As "Minotaur" was approaching territorial waters of New Zealand, Pélissier gave short order:

"Stop the pursuit, we're heading back."

It could be too dangerous to continue the pursuit. "Laubie" turned north and started its return to the it's base in French Polynesia. Hopefully undetected.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

Image

To, Leon Blum, Office of the President of the SR of France

From the office of Premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin

Hello again Mr. Blum. Thank you for the congratulations, and I too hope we may maintain our partnership. I have paid attention to certain events in China as of late, no doubt the same as you. Upon receiving your letter I immidiently informed my intelligence officers of your government's actions. They suggest that in order to potentially bring the Communist Party of China out from the shadows, we must first entice the Proletariat. I suggest we fund local Chinese labor unions, and possibly the Chinese branches of organizations such as the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Despite our political differences, such organizations are no doubt a valuable asset to the international struggle of the Working Class. My Comrades experienced in the art of subversion have laid out a plan for the Revolution in China.

We must first begin efforts to carefully insert agitators into Chinese factories and work places, and provoke unionization measures. This may take a month, maybe a year, but I and my officers believe labor unions to be one of the most effective weapons of Socialism in Capitalist countries. It is also imperative to contact Chinese Communist organizations left in the country to aid these efforts, and to disrupt Chinese government military operations.

After a sufficient number of workers in the Chinese Industrial system are unionized, we must encourage strikes and boycotts against Capitalist enterprise. At this point, we may begin secretly distributing Marxist literature translated into Chinese among urban areas. As rural Peasants are sympathetic to our cause, they are a secondary concern. Chinese Union strikes should not settle for concessions from the Capitalist class, at this point we must press our advantage and urge the unions to begin efforts to thrust politicians that sympathize with our views into power, and to establish Worker controlled industries.

Whatever option the Chinese Government takes at this point, is a victory for us. They can either allow Socialists to openly run for office, and thereby ensure that Socialist parties are victorious in elections (our unionization efforts by this time have created a large popular base for Socialists), or they can crack down on strikes and seek to suppress unions or destroy them. Should the Chinese Police or Military align itself openly against the Proletariat, the already sizable popularity of the Socialists shall insure they cannot win, and that they have started a civil war that could potentially force the Capitalist Class from power in China.

The most important aspect of this plan is that little has changed under the KMT for the average Chinese worker, and that the KMT has no doubt shown its incompetence to the people of China in the war against Japan.

Best Regards, Joseph Stalin, Premier of the USSR

Bergen, Norway, United Scandanavia

" She's a beauty isn't she?"

Commondore Dridson, commander of the Scandanavian Navy, looked down at the man next to him. " Yes, I suppose she is."

The two were looking at the next addition to the Scandanavian navy, a light cruiser in the process of being built named SNS ( Scandanavian Naval Ship) Copenhagen. Eventually, she would be the lead in a class of three.

" When is the expected finish date?"

The man scratched his head and Dridson tapped his heals impatiently. " A year or so I suppose."

Dridson nodded. " Very well. I'll be on my way to survey the rest of the fleet. Good day to you." Dridson briskly walked away from the dry dock, two Scandanavian marines following close behind.

Greetings President Truman! I wish good health to you and your family for ages to come! It has come to the attention of the Scandanavian Admiralty that the Scandanavian Navy and Air Corps is quite decrepid, especially after the Second World War. So, therefore, the Scandanavian Military Office has permitted the Air Corps and Admiralty to purchase Aircraft from the US. The Admiralty is asking for two battleships of the Iowa class and an escort carrier of any class. The Air Corps is asking for 20 F4U- Corsairs, 15 P-51 Mustangs, and 18 B-17s. In return, the United States will be given full military access to the Scandanavian province of Iceland.

Stay safe and honest,

Scandanavian Foreign Ministry

Belgrade, Confederation of Yugoslavia

"The what of what? What in the name of the Almighty are you talking about?"
King/Council Chairman/Council President Alexander was currently a very busy man. Currently meaning, of course, for several years now. His predecessor was by no means a bad person but in the leader department he was lacking. Now it fell to him to unite the various ethnicities that Peter had left shattered and bickering. Of course, not all blame could be pointed to him. Unifying the nation at all had been a feat for the history books, and quite simply the balkan states had just gone back to what they do best. Hating each other. Yugoslavia had made gains after the War, and had even managed to fight of Tito's communist dogs and keep themselves together, if barely by a string. And now he had this Trieste business to deal with. Looking up from his desk chock full of papers, he gave an impatient look at his Minister of Domestic Affairs. Swallowing nervously the Minister started again, handing him a small map.
"The Coastal Republic of Trieste, sir. The lands we gained from Italy after the war were colonized by Italians ever since they took it from the Austrians in the first Great War, and now the Italian people there, and the Slovenes they've been mixing with for generations before, want their own country, either in the confederation if we accept or out of it if we refuse."
Alexander blinked in rapid succession for a few seconds, processing the information before sighing. "Slovenia won't like it. Dalmatia and Croatia also have claims in the region."
The Minister nodded. "Yes, sir. I have personally talked to the Slovenian President and he said, and I quote, 'Good. We didn't want those weird Italian Slovenes anyways.' They are still rather ticked about losing their coast, however."
Alexander took a moment again, contemplating. "Well, we either have to fight another war to bring a rebellious people who want representation back into our country, or we can take land away from our member states and allow a non-Slav country to enter Yugoslavia as a member state. The first option would sully our opinion on the world stage and possibly convey a message that we are willing to use force to keep our nation alive. The second would show willingness to adapt and our acceptance of all Balkan people's, even the Italo-Slovene."
He paused, waiting for several minutes while his minister steadily became more and more nervous. Finally, he took out a piece of paper and began writing,
To the esteemed Coastal Republic of Trieste, from the desk of His Majesty, Alexander, King of Serbia, Chairman on the Yugoslav Council, and Acting President of the Confederation of Yugoslavia. His Majesty welcomes you and your nation to the Confederation, and invited you to the next Council Meeting in Belgrade. Hopefully, we will be able to solve this issue and ease your entry into our great nation.
Handing it to the minister, he nodded. "Send that, please."
The minister let out a nervous chuckle. "Short and precise as always, sir."
As the minister walked out, Alexander frowned. Things were already tense in the country, the only things keeping them united were the communist threat and the fascists to the south. His domestic problems seemed over for the moment, and his eyes shifted towards his international issues. He sighed again. He'd been doing that a lot lately.

Chengdu

Vice President Li Zongren exited his car and saluted the soldiers. He then turned to the railroad, workers hammered in spikes and operated machinery, laying down track, meter by meter. The planned Chengdu-Chongqing railroad was well underway, though it would take another year to complete. Li Zongren sat down and spent about an hour watching the track be constructed and taking notes on how it was going. Wearing a simple military uniform, he appeared as a normal soldier, further endearing him to worker and soldier alike. As he was nothing like the extravagantly-dressed, aristocratic warlords. He personally detested politics and high-life, and preferred military life, but he wished to serve his country as best he could. After an hour of note-taking, he asked a nearby officer how progress was going. "On schedule, we're working hard but we can only expect to finish in 1949." Li nodded and got into his car, to head into the city for lunch.

"Balance, balance, come on. Balance. Good." Expert gymnastics coach Yin Qing said to a teenage gymnast as she did her best on the balance beam. Gymnastics was a strong suite for China, and with the Olympics approaching fast, the Kuomintang was focusing a lot on a successful showing for China. Yin Qing was often watched by government officials from the Ministry of Sport taking notes. The Kuomintang was looking for the blue, red, and white to paint all over the gold medals of London.

In the Swiss City, Headquarters of the Olympic Committee, Head of the Chinese Olympic Team in a Smart-looking soon, the intelligent and cunning He Jianhong approached the British Ambassador to the Olympic Committee. He was familiar with the man and said to him. "Good to see you, Sir. I come bringing great news, we in China are looking towards 1956, as the Finns deserve 1952 completely, and we're thinking Beijing. We're planning stadiums. and by then we're confident we can afford it. I hope you can see the sense in it."

Otog Banner, Province of Inner Mongolia, The Republic of China

Tiny yurt in a small valley village housed the clinic of Dr. Lisa Pelletier. She was one of the doctors that were sent to China on a mission to help its population, stricken with consequnces of war destruction and post-war famines and epidemics. She proscribed medicines, performed surgeries for peasants injured in the fields, administered vaccinations of children. However, she had another duty, given to her by SDECE- locating surviving members of Chinese Communist Party and contacting them on behalf of French government. Lisa didn't like work for SDECE: she decided to be a doctor, an unusual line of work for a woman in her time and place, in order to help people. However, when Nazis started their occupation of France she decided the best way to help people is to join the resistance. From the ranks of resistance, she got tangled into a net of secret agents and calling in a favor from her was something new communist commissar of SDECE, Jean Palgrise was entitled to since he and his group had saved her from Gestapo once when she got captured in Nantes.

After several long winter months in the cold and dry province of Inner Mongolia, after a lot of speaking with poor Mongolian peasants who had little knowledge of politics and far less comprehension of her heavily accented Mandarin, she stumbled onto a horse breeder. Horse breeder had travelled those steppes far and wide and have heard rumors about small number of surviving Mao's officers in the desert hideout located ten miles from the nameless village Lisa worked in. For a hefty sum and some morphine (a man was troubled with chronic pain, after receiving a Japanese bullet to the knee.) he agreed to draw her a map to the place. Lisa rode there alone, armed with MAB Model D she had kept from the resistance years. She easily find a small cabin, with 5 horses tied outside. She dismounted and approached the door, hearing voices inside. Her heart skipped when she heard one man adressed another.

" ...a worrying matter comrade Mao."

She drew in a deep breath, rose her hand and knocked on the door...

Office of Maurice Thorez, Paris, France

Last couple of months have been the most stressful months for Thorez since days of German occupation. After the assemby have voted in favour of letting colonies decide whether they will stay in French Socialist Union, he was busy preparing a draft of the law that was supposed to define the concrete relationships between France and newly liberated ex-colonies. This law was to be ratified by France and by governments of newly sovereign states after being agreed to by delegates of France and ex- French territories. Thorezes proposal was as follows: The states of French Socialist Union will maintain their full independance with regards to inner and foreign politics, economy, military education and healthcare. French state and worker owned companies must be allowed to freely do business according to the socialist model they adhere too, while means of production owned by capitalist can be freely nationalized by governments and their assets used as reparations for years of colonial rule. All of the states of FSU freely share their technology and trade their resources and they are tied with mutual defence agreement in case any of them is attacked.

Now as he worked on the finer points of the document that was to be discussed in the September summit he received results of elections in the states of French West Africa and Polynesia. Pro-socialist delegates were elected in Senegal-Mauretania, Four Communes, Ivory Coast, Dahomey and Guinea, but Soudan-niger and Polynesia elected conservative delegates largely sceptical of PCF. With problematic elections in French Equatorial Africa and Madagascar on the way which could mean more seats won by supporters of tribal chiefs and nationalists, he was looking at a heavy negotiations with a possibility of some colonies severing their ties completely. He basically gave up on Soudan-Niger, where conservative Sudanese Regroupment Party won majority of delegates. They could easily turn towards South Africa or UK. With every colonial election there was more pressure on him to negotiate best legal solutions that will keep both socialists and moderates satisfied at home and abroad. He streched his legs and returned to his work.

Esteemed comrade

I want to inform you that there are 700 000 German citizens still held in French Socialist Republics as prisoners of war. We are willing to repatriate to the GDR all of those ex soldiers, save those that have been found guilty or are currently under investigation for war crimes committed on the French soil.

There is another matter I wanted to discuss with you. Both of our countries had suffered a great deal thanks to the rule of Adolf Hitler and his criminal party and underwent great deal of destruction as a result of war that Nazis forced upon both of our countries. I suggest we meet sometimes soon to develop common plan of reconstruction of our economy and infrastructure.

Stade Buffalo cycling track, Paric, France

Three members of French cycling team pedaled vigorously around the road track. This summer in London, British and Belgian teams will await them. They have trained hard since war ended, relishing the moment when they could meet their British rivals on the track. For three young man choosed to go to London, this was to be first Olympics and nervousness was showing. Their coach, waved his head as they passed through the finish line. They were three seconds below the predicted time, which was good but not good eneugh if they expect to beat the likes of Maitland and Thomas.

Baikonur Cosmodrome

A launch rack, reminiscent of giant Katyusha launcher but with only one gantry, stood in the middle of a desolate sandy test ground. An observation bunker stood several hundred feet away, the concrete it was made out of worn by the wind and sand. A man in the bunker pressed a button, and the jet engines attached to the craft activated. A moment later, the launcher's supports began to stress, the gantry moving slightly. Then, the craft was released, and it sprung into the sky. The Z-3 experimental cruise rocket began to accelerate, gaining altitude. As the Earth seemed to recede, the atmosphere began to thin. The stars were now visible as small points of light, and other features of the sky began to fade into view. As the jet engines ran out of oxygen, and cut off, the rocket engine at the rear of the craft activated. For a minute, the white trail of the rocket engine was visible across the Kazakh sky. Then, inside the rocket a fuel tank ruptured, sending fuel streaming out of the side of the vehicle as it began to list to the side and go off course, and loose speed. A moment later the craft exploded, sending chunks of it falling from the sky across large parts of the USSR. A wing, with the red Soviet Star on it, fell into a farmers field in Uzbekistan. Several hours later, a military truck would arrive to collect it, the symbol of the USSR and the symbol of the Soviet Space program covered up by a tarp. The launch was very public, and so was the explosion which was caught by many journalists cameras. The Rocket Scientists had not exepected the atmosphere to be so thin so high up, and the lack of pressure caused a fuel tank to rupture, dooming the Z-3 craft. A failure to be sure, but one the USSR could learn from.

A Bus Stop Somewhere in Moscow

A man set down his newspaper on his lap, Z-3 ROCKET TEST FAILS inscribed on the paper's front page in Russian. The man exhaled, and turned his head to look at a new sound approaching other than the sound of cars moving down the street. The sound of the wheels of moving bikes and furious pedaling. The Soviet Olympic Cycling team was training, similar to their French Comrades, as were other Olympic teams in the sports and gym complex behind the bus stop the man was sitting at. As the bikers whizzed past, the man went back to reading his news paper. Soon the bus would come, and he would commute home to his family.

Beijing (Similar Events in Chongqing, Xi'an, and Chengdu)

Peasants from across China had arrived in the Capital for a day of marching. Even with National Reconstruction Efforts, life was difficult and hardships common for these hardy farmers. Several thousand in many cities, including Beijing marched waving banners and flags. The marched for government subsidies to farmers to modernize farming equipment, new government standards for the quality of that equipment, for the government to establish new regulations to protect small farmers from large industry, and to establish new regulations to stop railroad companies from exploiting farmers who needed their grain transported, some also had nostalgia for the CCP, some chanting slogans similar to those of the missing Mao Tse-Tung. They marched throughout Beijing, from the perimeter of the urban areas to the Legislative Yuan itself, chanting all the way. They had serious needs and grievances, the troops and police watched with guns, would they fire like in the past? But no, they let them march in peace and then take the trains and buses home.

The farmers waited anxiously for several days in their homes, listening to the radio and word of mouth, would they have to protest again? Would Beijing do anything?
Tu Bao was a poor farmer, but he had saved all his money for his love of the radio. He sat down with his children and wife to listen to the evening news way out in Hunan Province.

The Legislative Yuan has passed a list of new reforms.........In accordance with...the principle of Minsheng...Farming subsidies..and new regulations regarding the quality of farming equipment, to make them more safe....new regulations on railroad companies to lower exorbitant prices for farmers to a sensible level...

Tu and his family cheered, maybe life would get better, maybe his family could succeed.

Mongolia

The five men inside the Yurt heard the noise on the door. One man, in a riding coat and wearing a falconers glove grabbed his Type 14 Nambu Pistol, stolen from the Japanese. He raised his gun and shouted "Who goes there, announce yourself or I shoot!"

"It certainly can be," Truman replied "the election is coming up very soon now, and it could be a difficult race, but we'll have to see who the Republicans nominate; I'll need a good vice president as well. Anyways, how are things going here in China?"

Firstly, I believe I speak for the entirety of our united 48 states when I say that I appreciate the United Scandinavian Coalition coming to us for this purchase, and that I will gladly support the rebuilding of the Scandinavian military. The combined production cost of the requested vehicles is a total of 220,954,697 USD; In the spirit of support and friendship between our nations, I will gladly remove 454,697 USD from the price and include the ammunition at no additional cost.

As a result of the high cost, we would be willing to accept a ten-year payment plan of 22,050,000 USD a year, though if Scandinavia is unable to pay this price in currency we would be happy to consider territory or raw resources as alternate methods of payment. I hope that the United States and Scandinavian Coalition will be able to reach a mutually beneficial deal in any case.

The Ural Mountains

The silence was almost eerie, as the trees gently swayed in the breeze. A reindeer walked by, the snow gently falling on its fur, the usual brown disrupted by flakes of snow. The silence was shattered as a bobsled slid past, gaining speed on its way to a bobsled track. The crew of the bobsled maneuvered and controlled it in ways only experts could, sending they craft careening to the left or right to avoid obstacles, such as trees and grey rocks. The bobsled team was training in a similar place to where the olympics would be held, and had been training as such and preparing for months. The steel skids of their sled were polished, not a single impurity or speck of rust on them. The sled itself was decorated with the Soviet hammer and sickle, in their golden color with the Soviet star above. As the sled continued on, it wove through tracks designed to test the crews skills to the limit, and prepare them for the Olympics. Hours later, as the sun set over the snowy mountain peaks, and the bobsled team had already dropped into bed from exhaustion, the figure skating team was still practicing on a nearby frozen lake. Doing their routine on the ice, they left white streaks where their skates went. Older more worn patterns were also in the ice, alluding to months of practicing on the same lake. On another nearby frozen lake, speed skaters went about their practice, their trainers watching approvingly. An hour later, when everyone had retired to the nearby lodge, the lodge's last light went off as the last exhausted Olympic teams and their trainers went to sleep.

Tröndheim, Norway, Scandanavia

The bright lights of the almost fairy tale like town blinked in the darkness outside the town. Large spotlights, some used by German forces in World War II, lit up the mountain side like a candle, not an inch of ground in the dark. Up and down the fresh powder raced the Scandanavian ski teams, their poles pushing softly through the fluffy snow that had fallen the earlier after noon. John Bënson, head of the Scandanavian Olympic Teams, watched the practice from a nearby observation booth. " This is our time to shine people! The Winter Olympics, sports that were created by Scandanavians and sports that Scandanavians love! We need to win this!" Bënson shouted excitedly everyone else in the booth. Up and down the mountainside, the Scandanavian skiers concentrated on their last practice, not saying a word.

Peter Hanson, Head of the International Olympic Committee, Switzerland

Peter Hanson, the Scandanavian born overseer of the 1948 Olympic Games, stepped up to the podium, ready to give his last speech before opening ceremonies.

" In a few days, the 1948 Winter Olympics will open, marking a new era of peace and harmony for the world. For the past few years, the Olympic Committee has been working closely with the Swiss government to hold these Olympic Games. And I must say, this is going to be the most important moment in my life! But first, I must thank a few people for their commitment towards making these Olympics possible. First, I again would like to thank the Swiis government for their cooperation and helpfulness while hosting these Olympic games. Thank all of you, very much. Secondly, I'd like to thank all my colleagues on the Olympic Committee. No matter your back proud, you have all worked hard and diligently to make this thing happen. And lastly, I'd like to thank all the governments of the participating nations for supporting their athletes and working with me and the Swiss government to help fine point all the details. Thank you all.

At this point, all the details of these Olympics have been finished. Lodging and security has been prepared by the Swiss government and I can assure you, all the athletes will be safe and sound while participating in the games. Now, a reminder to all people, this is supposed to be a friendly competition. These games are hopefully going to put the scars of World War Two behind us. There will be no infighting between Athletes of different nations. If this occurs, the automatic disqualification of that athlete and perhaps their entire team will be authorized. Thank you." Hanson walked off the stage to clicks of the reporters cameras.

To President Truman,

Scandanavia would be delighted to purchase the Warships for that sum of Monty with one condition. The Scandanavian economy has not yet recovered so at this moment we can not afford to pay. Perhaps a twenty year deal, instead of a ten year, would suffice? In twenty years, Scandanavia could raise the sum of money asked. We look forward to working with your great nation in the future.

Stay safe and happy,

Confederation of Yugoslavia

Alexander sighed. No one in the room heard him, of course, because they were too preoccupied yelling at each other. The Slovenian President was yelling at the Croatian one, and the President of Kosovo was yelling at the King of Makedonia alongside the Prince of Montenegro(at least they're cooperating, he thought to himself), and the Grand Duke of Dalmatia cursed out the Governor of Bosnia. The Doge of the new Trieste sat beside the King of Serbia himself, chuckling. Alexander turned to him, questioning. "I fail to see how you find this amusing, Giovanni."
At that, the Doge simply smiled, saying "Oh, I find it hilarious. Yugoslavia is held up high on a pedestal in the West. A multi-ethnic state that not even half a century ago was soaked in blood from 2 regional wars and a world war uniting to stand up against the encroaching Red Tide. But this? This is the real Yugoslavia. Yes, we may be united against the Reds but that is it. What other enemies do we have? The Greeks, who stood with us in the War and also stands against communism? The Italians, who overthrew their crackpot leader and continue to support us? The Hungarians, maybe, but without Soviet support we would crush them. And despite the Bulgarians being communist, they are still our Slavic brothers and as such will be united with us when communism falls. What will unite us when it does, though?"

Alexander felt his face go cold as the blood practically drained from his face. He knew the leader of the newborn nation was right, of course, but denial is a wonderful thing for people faced with their lives collapsing. When he looked away from Giovanni, he noticed that by some miracle the entire room had gone silent when the Doge had spoken, listening to his short speech. Some of them looked ashamed, the Grand Duke of Dalmatia was apologizing to the Governor of Bosnia profusely, and Giovanni looked surprised that anyone had listened. With the council looking at him, Alexander answered: "Brotherhood. Our blood will keep us united. For centuries, even millenia, the Slavic people of the Balkans have been oppressed, while our Slavic brethren in Russia grew fat and lazy off of their vast empire. They rarely ever protected us or cared for us, and if they did it was because it fit in nicely with their plans. Now, the Balkan peoples have rid themselves of their western oppressors and instead have a new foe, one that we thought was a brother to us. Instead, now we see their true colors. Red. And even when communism falls, there will always be a threat to the Balkans. This is why Yugoslavia stands, why it must stand. Why we must unite our brethren in Bulgaria and Albania with the motherland. The Balkans will always be threatened by some foe, be it Ottomans, Austrians, Soviets, or what have you. Yugoslavia stands united as one state because of this. For too long have the Southern Slavs been oppressed. Now, they stand up and shout, 'We are united! We are free!'. A message must be sent to the world, East and West, proclaiming that once and for all, we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, against any threat. A relatively short message. If you mess with us, all hell will break loose."

The room fell silent for several seconds before Giovanni stood up, slammed his fist onto the table, and shouted "Damn straight! God bless the Confederacy, and God bless the Slavic people!" After this, the other leaders began to do the same, showing their support. Alexander knew this wouldn't stop them from fighting altogether, but if he could just keep them from splitting apart it would be worth it. Yugoslavia needed a leader, a figure to rally around against a common enemy. He would not shy away from superpowers, or roll over for a new set of masters. Yugoslavia deserved a place on the world stage, and by God it would get it. Even if it had to push and shove it's way in.

Addressed to the desk of Harry Truman, President of the United States of America
From His Majesty Alexander, King of Serbia and President of the Council of the Confederacy of Yugoslavia

Mr. President,
It has come to Yugoslavia's attention that the United States of America, a stalwart ally of Yugoslavia during the War against the Fascists, currently leads a new crusade, against another backwards and foolish ideology, communism. The peoples of Yugoslavia as well despise the evils of communism, which has divided us from our brothers and sisters in Bulgaria. America was instrumental in keeping Yugoslavia out of the Soviet sphere after the end of the war, and even more instrumental in post war rebuilding with your fantastic Marshall Plan. For this, we will always be grateful. Now, both of our nations, and many others, face the imminent threat of the Red Menace, a tide that constantly seeks to drown all free peoples under its rule. Yugoslavia would be honored if it could join the American-lead Western Bloc, so that we might stand together alongside many others as a bulwark against new fascists and communists alike. The freedom loving people of Yugoslavia anxiously await your response.

From: Komissar Lothar Bolz, Foreign Minister of the German Democratic Republic
Subject: Reconstruction

This is fantastic news! I have informed the Politburo and we are all extremely grateful for the announcement of the return of our long lost sons, with this, we, of course, agree that those who have committed war crimes are undeserving of seeing the motherland. But still, we are grateful.

The plan moving forward will not be easy, but we have been discussing plans moving forward to improve damaged infrastructure and to reconstruct the factories that were lost in the horrendous war. With the 700,000 prisoners, give or take for those who are guilty of course, we will have 500,000 stay to aid in the reconstruction and beautification of the parts of France that had been damaged by German forces, as a form of apology, and once we are able to balance the books, we will be able to offer more monetary aid, but as we also need to reconstruct our state, that may be a few years.

With that, we also have another plan in the works, a railway to connect our nations, as we can't move through West Germany we would have to send this through Yugoslavian and Italian territory, the Italians may be persuaded, as this is an election year, we can possibly boost the Italian Communist party, the Yugoslavians may be tougher, but as they are isolated, it would be easy to push them around with the might of the Soviets behind us.

Finally, espionage, our Ministry of State Security has informed and authorized me to inform you of a new branch in the Stasi, codenamed "The Red Orchestra" which will act as a tool to expand socialism to every corner of the globe, an ambitious quest, but for now they're just looking at West Germany. If you have any questions, please ask Erich Mielke, Kommisar of State Security.

I look forward to your response.

Subject: Looking Forward

We thank you for your protection, it brings us great calm to know that Socialism is alive and well, and seeks to obliterate the threats from the fascists and capitalists. I suppose with that advice we would be interested in buying surplus equipment that you have, primarily tanks, artillery pieces, and aircraft, as our stocks of small arms and ammunition are still fairly good, we are fine on that front.

Thank you as well for your investments in our state, the French have recently announced the return of our citizens, we have plans to get them back to work rebuilding the nation, especially Dresden, which had been devastated by the Yankees.

Finally, we would like to announce the creation, by the Ministry of State Security, a force created to unite Socialist security forces to expand workers rights abroad, and protect them domestically, the unit is codenamed "The Red Orchestra" please direct all questions about this unit to Erich Mielke, Kommisar of State Security.

I look forward to your response.

Berlin, German Democratic Republic

Image

Leon Blum crossed the lobby of heavily damaged airport terminal. The unrelenting cold of the East Berlin went into his aging bones as he walked to the government vehicle that was supposed to take him first to the Reichstag where he is supposed to meet with German representatives and discuss some matters. First of all there was railroad: he already put plans to build Riviera railway along the Mediterranen coast before the National Assembly. This project was planned by him before the war- such railway would help French tourism greatly. Connecting France to East Germany through Italy and Yugoslavia would be an additional boon.

Also there was something else he had with him: encrypted documents regarding intelligence French secret service had gathered in China, and also some plans they had for development of drug that would force interrogated person to tell the truth. There were also some information about Nazi criminals that have managed to run abroad and were now hired by foreign governments. He read about their "Red Orchestra" project and although he considered espionage undemocratic he understood value this kind of project had: should West Germany develop any plans to attack France in the future those guys are in best position to warn his country.

After the meeting he planned other activities, those more solemn: he wanted to visit memorials to the victims of Nazism and war in general, laying wreaths to remember those who made up the world of his youth and now are gone thanks the insanity of the ideology based on hate.

Blum looked through the window. Outside, thick snow fell upon the ruins of Berlin he once knew. His old bones screamed with every snowflake...

St. Moritz, Switzerland

Faces of French bobsled team lit up as "La Marseillaise" played. SIlver in bobsled was their first medal on first olympic games after the war. Wartime scars were clearly visible- most of the athletes were very young, some even younger than twenty because many of the athletes that saw games in Berlin in 1936 were dead, killed in the war that shook the world. However in was nice seeing this sportsmanship and brotherhood as athletes all over the world came to test their strength on a different, nobler battlefield.

Otog Banner, Province of Inner Mongolia, The Republic of China

Dr. Pelletier reeled back away from the voice but she quickly got her composure back. There was procedure in case that happened, and she was specifically instructed what to do. She cluthed her pistol in one sweaty hand, hoping she won't have to shoot- killing people was against everything she stood for, and she felt literall shakes after shooting a Gestapo agent in the dark Parisian alley one night six years ago. She switched to the Gan dialect of Chinese- she could pronuonce only few words, but real Mao, raised in Hunan province should be able to understand it. She spoke slowly, carefully stressing every syllable:

"I am doctor Pelletier, and I am carrying message for you from the friendly government of France."

And in Brinze was the United Scandanavian Coalition, for their second medal of the Olympics. Congratulations to all participants.

Congratulations to the system up in Tröndheim. Winning silver was France, with a stellar performance. Congratulations for earning your first medal. OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

Image

To, Erich Mielke, Kommisar of State Security.

From the office of Vyacheslav Molotov, Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union

Greetings. I have been instructed by Komissar Bolz to direct my questions regarding the special unit - Red Orchestra. Comrade Stalin has asked me to suggest possible tactics for the subversion of countries that threaten the Socialist movement. Namely, China and West Germany. I suggest this unit be made up of the best spies specializing in agitating and so on from all nations of the Warsaw Pact. It is my and much of the Soviet Government's belief that China represents a unique threat to the USSR, and by extension the rest of the Warsaw Pact. Last year an incident occurred along the Chinese border that had somewhat stirred our government. The Chinese had erected a fort in the Manchirian mountains, with artillery guns aimed to the USSR. My country threatened to bomb the fort should the Chinese not withdraw their guns inside it, and aim them away from the USSR. The Chinese government has already shown its true colors, with its ban on Socialist and Communist parties. I suggest we target the KMT Government in China first, to prove the effectiveness of this new unit.

Best Regards, Vyacheslav Molotov, Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union

Árpád Szakasits President of Peoples Federal Republic of Hungary

From the office of Vyacheslav Molotov, Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union

Hello, Mr. Szakasits. Unfortunately Stalin is currently traveling to test ranges in the central USSR to inquire about the recent Z-3 test failure. I however am happy to say that your offer shall be approved by me in Stalin's place. Red Army advisers have been dispatched to your country, and I am happy again to say that the Soviet Union is willing to provide additional designs, no extra charge. The MiG-9 aircraft designs are currently being sent as well, and we hope to see MiG's in Hungarian markings soon enough along with IS-3 tanks in Hungarian colors.

Best Regards, Vyacheslav Molotov, Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union

True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN

Beijing

Chiang smiled, he loved politics. "Yes I'm curious to see, Dewey looks resurgent. As for China things are stable, we're pitching in blood sweat and tears into rebuilding the nation from the ashes and ruin of Japanese devastation. It's difficult, but we're doing it. The Kuomintang has won a landslide in elections, and the hard work of governing is at hand. And the communists are scheming as ever, trying to influence us. But we're strongly against them now and forever, and the Soviets, whining and crying over our forts on the border. Madmen, that's what Stalin is, a madman. We must work together to stop him."

St. Moritz, During the Olympics

The National Flag Anthem of the Republic of China flew as the flag was raised in the Bronze position. The Chinese Speed Skating athletes, overjoyed after almost a year of training, performing better than anybody expected, now were given beautiful bronze medals, the listened to their anthem, hand over heart, prouder than ever.

The Chinese Hockey Team was slapping the puck around in the Ice Rink, hockey was hastily introduced into China by Madame Chiang after an enlightening visit to Montreal, and she supported the creation of a small team. They weren't much compared to the giants of Canada, America, and the USSR but they were overjoyed after defeating friendly rival South Africa. They did practice shots, skated about the ice, training. Their coach shouted to them, more drills, more drills! The Assistant Coach came in and shouted for them to get dressed in their finest clothes. They did, and they entered a room where the speed skating was already waiting in suits and ties, wearing their glittering bronze medals. The hockey players waited, they were very confused. The Skaters flashing them knowing looks. The door opened, and out came Chiang Kai-Shek. Wearing a simple military uniform he entered with a smile. The hockey players gasped in shock, the skaters smiled, they had known beforehand. "It's good to see you all. You are truly super human. Zipping down the ice at incredible speeds, it's mind boggling. Absolutely mind-boggling. It's absolutely amazing. Just amazing. You all will get, and deserve along with other medal-winners,
a parade in Beijing!"
He laughed and turned to the hockey players. "I was listening and the radio to the game. You really whipped those Boers, well done well done. It was great." He got around to shaking everybody's hand. Even giving individual compliments. "Nobody knows I'm actually here except for the Olympic authorities, I'm making my official debut tomorrow. So don't say anything, but it was great to see you all." Chiang smiled and left.

The next day Chiang arrived in the stadium for figure skating pairs. He quietly arrived in his special box high up in the stands, waving to the crowd, and watching the skaters dance.

Mongolia

The men heard the person walk back from the door. They heard her spoke. The man with the gun eyes widened as he opened the door. The others looked at each other in confusion, they couldn't understand. The armed man put down his gun and turned to the others he mouthed "France." The others jaws dropped. The man opened the door. He saw the Caucasian Woman. He said in Mandarin, "I am Mao Tse-Tung. Come in, put your gun on the table, and tell us what you have to say." This man was much thinner than Mao, his cheeks less full and less chubby. His riding coat was smaller. But he had the mole on his chin that was distinctly Mao's. His hair was similar too. The other four men were of varying complexion, each of which looked very confused and shocked. Mao guided her in and sat down and directed for one of the men to prepare tea. He did so, and another sat down. Perhaps with a gun at the ready. "What are you here for, why are you here? Since we were driven out of Manchuria and scattered, we haven't seen anyone from outside of China."

Training camps across South Africa:
The sight was familiar across all. Troops running exercises, from physical training, to hand-to-hand combat, to gunnery. The training was harsh, with minimal food and sleep given, to assist with adapting South African troops to the harsh conditions. New recruits were being drawn in from all across South Africa, from the north of Namibia, allowing for the creation of two more divisions. The 3rd Infantry Division was created, as well as the 7th Armoured Division.

Outside Cape Town:
A new branch of the South African was created, known as the South African Military Development Corps (SAMDC). They goal, was to develop new weapons from captured Italian equipment. 10 P40 were modified with improved engines, armour, and armament. They were drastically up armoured, increasing the armour thickness from 60 mm to 70 mm. The frontal armour was given an arrow shape (Similar to the pike nose on the IS-3). A new engine was installed, which was a copy of the engine from the Cromwell medium tanks. The turret was completely redesigned, rounding the front, and sloping the sides. The turret was also enlarged, as to fit the 17-pounder gun from the Sherman Firefly. The performance was improved, with the addition of a squeeze-bore.

St Moritz:
The South African hockey team was in shock. They could not believe their loss to the Chinese team. They were clearly upset, however, being good sportsmen, congratulated. Despite the fierce athletic rivalry between South Africa and China, they in the end were still good friends. After wishings of good luck, they South Africans went back to their hotel. Meeting later that night, the captain made an announcement. "Despite our loss, we can not let this defeat drag our spirit down. Come my friends, this is simply one loss. China will fall in the summer, for me must train for then." The team drank to this, and had a merry time. Flying back to South Africa, the team disbanded, with some going to boxing, some to shooting, and the rest to wrestling.

Mongolia

Lisa struggled to keep her calm, but she walked in.She put her gun on the table, putting her hand within safe distance from it. She observed the man: true enough he looked similar to Mao, and even had a signature mole, but she was still cautious- after all she saw Mao only on photographs and she was aware that he hadn't answer her in his own dialect. She decided not to be too snoopy, but still to remain alert to any giveaways. She reverted back to Mandarin and spoke:

"Good gracious, I've been looking for you for months. Anyway Franch government wants to stay in contact with Chinese communists to know their status and readyness for potential uprising in China. Also, we'd like to advise you not to rush into any conflicts with current Chinese government until time is right for it. That would risk unnecessesary losses."

From: Maurice Thorez, Premier of France
To: Árpád Szakasits President of Peoples Federal Republic of Hungary

President Blum is currently visiting East Berlin so this ended up on my desk. As for your proposition regarding steel and coal for cement and entrenching tools it had been veryfied by our Minister of Trade.

Joint Nuclear Committee, Cabinet War Rooms
King Charles Street, London, United Kingdom

The Joint Nuclear Committee was a new development, an ingenious amalgamation of the Generation 75 Committee, the MAUD Committee and the British Empire scientists that worked on Tube Alloys and the Manhattan Project. Prime Minister Attlee was present at the JNCs first conference and so was, surprisingly, His Majesty the King. George VI seemed uncomfortable sitting at the same table as the Labour Prime Minister whose very existence threatened the Monarchy on a very low yet very ominous level, the Labour Party could hardly be considered Socialist, especially after their recent announcements that they would continue to support and defend the Empire, yet they were still a step towards the Left, too many unchecked shuffles would lead straight into bed with the Communists. The JNC had assembled to receive their briefings from both the King and the PM, His Majesty, King George the sixth was, as expected, allowed to speak first.

"The Joint Nuclear Committee is formed from the true top class of British and Commonwealth scientists and I have no doubts within me that you will do your duty to the Empire, you must stay confidential, strong and above all, free. What I mean is that I am giving you a 'blank cheque', the JNC will have the full support of the monarchy in its efforts. My personal wishes are that a weapon as capable as that that the Americans used to great effect against the former Japanese foe be developed by this committee and produced before 1950 if possible. Further developments must be ready, however, for weapons of far greater power to be developed and produced by 1960." The King nodded towards Attlee who dared not nod back, he sat down and listened to what the Prime Minister had to say.

"My wishes and that of His Majesty's Government are much the same as those of His Majesty." Attlee began, much to the king's surprise, "I agree wholeheartedly on his deadlines for the development and production of nuclear weapons. However, I would also like the Joint Nuclear Committee to work on alternate electricity generation methods that use nuclear energy. Also, the Empire must be combed for deposits of Uranium and Plutonium."

Olympic Committe

Holding the Olympic Games so soon after the end of the Second World War seemed imprudent to many members of the Olympic Committee in Britain, but the preparations were in full swing nonetheless. Part of the Prime Minister's campaign to put demobilised soldiers to work was getting engineers to repair London's stadiums and other sporting facilities, as well as beginning work on an all new stadium at Wembley, the original stadium, built in 1923, had sustained bomb damage during the German bombing of London and it was decided in 1944 to tear it down and build anew, work had been going on since 1945 and the upcoming Summer Olympic Games forced the builders to speed up construction. The new stadium was a mammoth construction, capable of holding 2,000 fewer spectators than the original but with space for a lavish entrance complete with small shops and dining areas along with much better facilities for the competitors and more space in the centre of the stadium so more sports could be played in one place.

Special attention had been made for several sports, the shooting, both pistol and rifle, was placed into the capable hands of men who had served in the British Army as snipers, marksmen and officers who would have plenty of experience with service revolvers. The sailing and rowing was entrusted to former members of the Royal Navy and Merchant Marine, along with several career athletes. Many Royal Marines volunteered for the swimming although very few were accepted as most of the career swimmers performed better. A fair few soldiers, mostly Grenadiers and Highlanders, volunteered for the wrestling and weight lifting and several of these were allowed to perform in both. Controversially, the diving was handled by members of the Merchant Navy, many of which had been torpedoed during the Battle of the Atlantic and had to dive off of their vessels and into the freezing ocean, now they would be doing it into a heated pool with very little danger which most were happy with. Football was left in the very, very capable hands of the regular England team and Fencing was taken up by plenty of veteran officers who enjoyed the gentlemanly ways of combat more than the boxing and shooting.

All seemed ready and the last preparations were all that remained, the various competitors trained day and night for the task ahead of them and a confusing mish-mash of building companies worked around the clock to complete repairs and finish the new buildings that would host the gargantuan event. The king himself was making many preparations for the Olympics as he would need to speak often, several visits to his speech therapist, Lionel Logue, were made and he seemed okay. This was to be the largest event since the VE Day celebrations and those of the end of the war and the whole government was putting a huge effort in to make it memorable.
