THE IRON CURTAIN DESCENDS

Image

It's January the first, year of 1947.

As iron curtain descends upon Europe, the rift between communist and capitalist states becomes even wider. Allies of yesterday are already scheming to get an upper hand in fight for dominance that has just started.

While the West and the East scrambled to establish new world of some, hopefully brighter, tommorrow, new challenges arose- Fascist Egypt and Greece emerged on the Mediterranean Sea, together with Israel, state that embodied countless centuries of hope. New troubles are on a horizon, and people who already survived one devastating war find themselves gazing into that horizon from under a mushroom cloud.

News of the last month:

British and US occupation zones in Germany merged into a single zone

Following failed negotiations between Nehru and Attlee, British India became independent as the separate nations of India and Pakistan .

Government led by a known Communist Maurice Thorez is formed in France. "French Republic" is renamed "French Socialist Republic"

A new American altitude record was set as a captured German V-2 rocket, No. 17, was launched to an altitude of 116 miles.

The Soviet Union first achieved a self-sustaining and controlled nuclear chain reaction, at the F-1 uranium-graphite nuclear reactor at Moscow, at 6:00 pm local time.

Beijing

Thousands of soldiers of the National Revolutionary Army paraded in their finest uniform. Their finest light green and brown caps, green army helmets. Their chests adorned with medals after years of conflict. Since 1911, chaos had dominated China. No strong, united, free China. Just chaos, communists and warlords battling it out with no regard for the unity of China. Japanese imperialists attacking savagely, and after the bloody war, unity had finally come. The one force fighting for a truly free, strong, and united China. The only unified group fighting for the unity and strength of China. For the Three Principles of the People, for the ideals of the Great Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the only group was the Kuomintang. Tirelessly fighting the warlords, then relentlessly fighting the Japanese invaders, now the uniting force behind the new China. From the rostrum on Tiananmen Square, above a great portrait of Sun Yat Sen was Chaing Kai-Shek wearing his best military uniform. Joined by his Prime Minister He Yingqin, several American advisors, prominent First Lady Soong Mei-ling, and brilliant General Sun Li-jen known as the "Rommel of the East" and other Generals and officials he saluted the troops as they marched by. The last holdouts of Communist resistance in the North East and South West had been eliminated. Now soldiers shouldering Type 24 Rifles, also known as the "Chaing Kai Shek Rifle" marched through to the sound of marching music. M2 Light Tanks cruised through the streets, and crowds cheered, waving the national flag. As the last of the soldiers and vehicles, and towed artillery passed by, Chaing Kai-Shek approached the microphones preparing to speak to the crowd.

"The Chinese people have been deceived, cheated, and lied to for years and years. From corrupt and foreign-dominated Emperors, to selfish and violent warlords, to an imperialist enemy savagely assaulting or Great Land. But through 1911 onward, the ideas of the Kuomintang and Dr. Sun Yat Sen have persevered. And the brave soldiers paraded before you all today have courageously defended these ideals and the motherland! Nationalism, one united China! All ethnicities, all peoples, united for one China! Free of foreign domination! A sovereign China! We resisted invasion for a decade against a barbaric foe which burned our cities and massacred our children. We will never again allow a foreign power to control China. Democracy! The people's will, will be the guiding force of the nation! Never will leaders govern without the consent of the people. The invader, the warlords, and the communist tyrants would have lead by suppressing the will of the people. Using brutal force to end any opposition to their selfish and oppressive rule. This is contrary to the ideas of the Kuomintang. The people are the central axis of the nation. That is the core of the Three Principles. The people's welfare! No government will rule without fighting for the people, protecting their rights, and providing them with needed welfare. To support the disadvantaged, alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the impoverished. To bring food to the starving, and water to the thirsty, and land to the homeless. This is the eternal mission of the Kuomintang. The war for this mission, the war for the unity of China, the war for the soul of China, the war that had lasted almost 40 long, bloody, strife-filled years has come to an end. With a triumph for the Chinese people! The dream of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the Dream of 1911, one United, Republican, free China has come true! The dream of untold millions of Chinese workers, peasants, soldiers, and families. It has finally come true. Now, one China behind the white sun of national unity, behind the national flag, marches onto the world! Unified, strong, one Republic of China! I hereby proclaim this Republic of China, unified, strong, encompassing all of China, from Harbin to Beijing, to Nanjing, to Hebei, to Chonquing. One nation, encompassing all the peoples of China. Uniting us behind the flag. No matter religion, ethnicity, birthplace, we are united behind the flag. Behind China! And this Republic shall follow the three principles, preserve democracy, uphold the people's livelihood, and a government benefiting the people, and supporting patriotism, and to uphold the highest ideas of China. The Republic shall be a Semi-Presidential system, with a President elected by the Legislative Yuan. Shall for the interest of stability be myself as Acting President until elections, I will also serve the people as Director-General of the Kuomintang and the Generalissimo of our heroic army, which has fought for the people and fought for the construction of this new glorious Republic. The Prime Minister shall be appointed by the President and shall lead the President's Party in the democratically elected Legislative Yuan. The Prime Minister appointed by myself will be He Yingqin, of the Kuomintang. This is a system which shall uphold the Three Principles, and which will preserve a United Republic of China! Today is our National Day!"

The crowd cheered happily, waving flags and chanting "Long live Chaing Kai-Shek!" and "Long live the Republic of China!" The soldiers waved their caps and helmets in the air, cheering. Artillery guns fired blank rounds into the sky. The military band struck up the national anthem, serene and peaceful. The crowd cheered and waved flags, singing along. Chiang Kai Shek waved to the crowd and saluted. He then walked back and of the rostrum, and the Generals and officials followed.

Beijing, KMT Headquarters

At the head of the table was Chiang Kai-Shek, now in a simple military jacket. General Li-Jen was sitting, First Lady Mei-Ling as well. Prime Minister He Yingqin joined them, along with Vice President Li Zongren, Defense Minister Bai Chongxi and numerous other officials.
"Excellent speech Generalissimo!" Exclaimed Prime Minister Yingqin. "I'm sure the people were inspired." Chiang smiled.
"Now on to the daunting task of national construction!" Chiang stood, followed by everybody else. He pointed to a map on the wall, flanked by two flags, the flag of the KMT, and the similar flag of the new Republic. Chiang pointed to the map. "After years of war our army is battle-hardened and experienced. But we have no industry, the first task of the Kuomintang government must be to build industry near and inside the cities, to attract people to the cities and create jobs. As for the peasants, we must preserve the free market economics of the West, and we must subsidy farming growth when necessary, the farmers and the farming companies know how to farm best, we won't plan anything like the communists would have. They had no knowledge of economics!" All around the table they nodded. "But China is so vast, our army must be reorganized to garrison this vast nation. I leave that to the geniuses of General Li-Jen and Minister Bai Chongxi." The table nodded. "I have organized a cabinet, for the Prime Minister, and he shall be responsible for day-today governance and consultation with Ministers. I leave it to him for form a responsible and accountable government. I shall oversee the governing and make sure everything is going to plan. Construction of factories and infrastructure is paramount, if this is messed up, everything fails. That's why I've chosen loyal, and most importantly experienced men to serve in the cabinet. Farm subsidies to support farmers are also important, and it's important we keep the entire nation in line, keep it united and stable. That's why we have the NSB, to eliminate subversive and communist elements. They are already hard at work with that." The table nodded. Chiang sat down, so did the others. "It is also important we establish press and media to spread the word of the new Republic, some in the Himalayas still believe the Qing are in charge!" The table laughed along with Chiang. "We must establish government posts across the country."
The Prime Minister spoke up,
"This task is daunting, it will take years."
"It will, but then China will be invisible. The cabinet is already hard at work."
"And elections?" Asked Yingqin, the Prime Minister.
"Elections now?" Exclaimed the First Lady. "The nation is barely stabilized!"
"The Legislative Yuan will have elections shortly. Then they will confirm me as President. The KMT obviously will dominate the Yuan, we're at the height of our popularity, the other parties will have no articles in the papers, the KMT flags at the parade are plastered across every single one."
"Well, you'll need to organize and make sure we're in good condition for elections." Pointed out Yingqin.
"Yes, I'll organize and do some press releases, make sure everything is in order. But now is the perfect time, we're more popular then we'll ever be, and we must confirm me as President by the people now, not just Interim President. If we wait, the other parties might have a shot at a stronger showing. China must be unified!" The table nodded as Chiang spoke. "But another idea, for the unity and the strength of China, I discussed this with the Prime Minister."
"Macau and Hong Kong." Replied Yingqin.
"Yes, we are friendly with the West, and after years of fighting the Japanese, they should give our rightful land back. This is a China making decisions on its own terms. We must be unified and have our land returned to us. I will have the foreign ministry contact the British and Portuguese." The table nodded, the meeting was going well and almost done. "Gentlemen.." He turned to his wife. " and ladies. The great task of National Construction lies ahead. I want posters with the KMT Star everywhere, promoting the National Reconstruction Program, the construction of factories, farm subsidies, infrastructure. Great tasks lie ahead. This State Council is adjourned." Everyone walked off, except for Soong Mei-Ling, who continued to talk with her husband.

The Republic of China

Addressed to: No. 10 Downing Street, London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

In the War Against Japanese Aggression in the Far East and China, Chinese and British soldiers fought shoulder to shoulder to defend Asia from Japanese terror. They fought valiantly. Many of these Chinese soldiers returned home to fight for another cause. The Unity of China. Fighting warlords and communist forces to restore one China. Now that one United Republic has been restored, China is ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with Great Britain again, against Communist expansionism. China remains and is proud to be an ally of Great Britain. When we meet in Tehran in 1943 we mapped out the future without German or Japanese aggression and expansionism. This is now a reality, and for China to fight alongside Britain, we require a truly united and firm nation. Many Chinese people in Hong Kong are yearning for a return to the Greater Chinese Motherland. We are aware of the 99 Year Lease to Great Britain, however this was signed by the Qing Dynasty, which no longer exists. And after Chinese brotherhood with Britain for a decade of war, we believe that for the unity and strength of China, for further cooperation. Hong Kong should return to the Chinese Motherland. We pledge to allow the continued operation of British businesses in Hong Kong, and business privileges would exist for an negotiated period of time. We believe a possible handover should be before 1955, but after 1950. We believe negotiations should start immediately, if the Government of the United Kingdom is open to such a discussion. We hope for a speedy reply.

The Republic of China

Addressed to: Headquarters of the Portuguese Government, Lisbon, Republic of Portugal

After years of a divided, powerless, weak, and easily dominated China. China has righted itself, after defeating the Japanese expansionist menace and defeating the Communist foe attempting to deceive China. China is united and powerful again. Portugal is considered a key partner of the Republic of China in standing up to the communist menace which threatens to deceive and then conquer the entire world. In order for a unified and stronger to China to stand up to this menace, this threat against the civilization of the whole world, all Chinese citizens must return to the Motherland. For a unified, stronger China. We request that Macau should be transferred to the Republic's administration. If the Portuguese government is open to this, we believe negotiations should begin immediately. We believe that the transfer should occur within the next decade, we promise that Portuguese businesses would operate within certain privileges for a certain amount of time, to be negotiated. Until an even playing field could be established for businesses. We hope for a speedy reply.

German Democratic Republic Established, Experiments with Captured German Flying Bombs

The Eastern part of Germany, under Soviet occupation since 1945, is now its own country. The German Democratic Republic's capital shall be in East Berlin. Although efforts to rebuild Germany have been slow due to plans to repair the Soviet Union first, the establishment of the GDR marks the end of reparations to the USSR, extracted over a two year period. Elections in the GDR are to commence immidiently, with no Soviet supervision at all, only the officials of the GDR. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has declared its intention to reduce Soviet presence in much of Eastern Europe to give the newly formed nations in the Warsaw Pact a chance to establish their government structures, hold elections, and what not. Elections in the USSR are growing nearer as well, and Stalin's leadership during the industrialization of our country and the war is predicted to have Pro-Stalin representatives elected into the People's Assembly, again. In Kazakhstan, experiments with captured German V-1 flying bombs has revealed that the German design could be improved with rocket technology, and after Soviet scientists attached two small rockets on the V-1 the craft gained enormous speed. There has been talk of reaching higher than the Americans by having a V-1 use its jet engine up to its operational range, and then switch to rocket power. More experiments will be required to actually reach this goal.

Jet Fighters Enter Widespread Use in the USSR, Nuclear Bomb Efforts Intensify

The MiG-9, Yak-15, and Yak-17 have begun to enter the Red Air Force in large numbers. The jet aircraft were designed just after the war, and have been rolling off factory assembly lines for the past year or so. With pilots now finishing training to use those craft, the planes are entering widespread use. The Soviet government has offered to sell the aircraft to the newly formed Socialist Republics in Eastern Europe. Currently the Soviet Union is one of the world leaders in Jet technology, and the Soviet Government intends to keep it that way. Meanwhile in Moscow, captured German scientists have been given a deal. If they work for the Soviet Union, they shall not be sent to trial for cooperating with the Nazi Government in Germany. They shall also be given free passage for their families and themselves back to Germany if they want should they work on the Soviet Nuclear Program. The biggest threat according to several members of the People's Assembly to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is the United States of America being the sole Atomic Bomb wielding nation. Many in the USSR have seen the currents in Global Politics, and that the USSR and USA have both arisen out of the war as the most powerful countries in the world.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

Addressed to the President of China, Chaing Kai-Shek, Beijing

From the office of the Premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin

I write to you on behalf of the government of my country. I will disregard the usual pleasantries, and go right to the heart of the matter. Our post war relations have no doubt chilled relations between our two countries. I belive it is in both our countries best interest to look to a future of improving relations, rather than go down a hostile path. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics shall formally extend the hand of friendship to your government should you follow certain requests. In return, we are prepared to turn over prisoners of war captured by Communist forces during the civil war in your country. All that we ask is that you legalize Socialist parties within the Republic of China, and that you turn over Communist prisoners of war. I would also like to inform you that it is possible for formal embassies and diplomatic channels to be opened between our two countries with the establishment of embassies in Moscow and Beijing.

Best Regards, Joseph Stalin

“It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. Sydney:
Life was running fairly normally in the city. However, everything felt tense, due to the threat of being bombed into non-existence. Everyone knew, if war did breakout, Australia would be highly desirable. We controlled the South Pacific and what many are calling the "Sea of Subs", the channel between the south of Australia and the Antarctic.. As day-to-day life was continuing, no one noticed a periscope of a sub breach the surface, watching the Sydney port. Several County-class heavy cruisers were coming and leaving, and the sub retreated before being detected. The sub knew the strength of the Australian navy, and did not want to fight Australia alone. Not yet, at least.

Canberra:
The government was in a mess. The aboriginals were starting to rebel, and they were trying to manage the defence of Australia's neutrality from both the Communists and the West. The economy was doing fine, with the exports of grain. Suddenly a voice called out, "End our neutrality God dam* it! Contact China, we can't keep up our charade of being a power in Oceania, we need foreign help." The chamber fell silent. This was the first time someone had suggested breaking the neutrality. Quickly, mutters grew into shouts, before a rallying cry of "Contact China!" was aroused. As the chant was going, several people slipped out of the chamber. They all shot glances at each other, exchanged papers, and slipped out of the building.

Darwin:
An SCA agent was tailing their target for about a month now. It was night, and the whistling of the wind made it hard to hear. "Bloody wonderful..." They reached for a pocket, and took out a knife. The agent quickened their pace to the point where the agent was right behind the target. The SCA agent put the target in an armlock, and put their knife to the target's throat. "Move one bloody muscle wanker, and say hello to Davy for me." was the last thing the target heard before passing out and getting dragged into a van.

Sent for: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 522 Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Road, Beijing, Republic of China

Greetings,

The nation of Australia has decided to abandon our state of neutrality, and as such, we desire strong allies. We would like to extend a hand of peace and friendship, for an alliance to defend the Pacific and Sea of Subs from foreign intervention. We have a history of cooperation. During WWII, Australian troops fought bravely and proudly side by side with Chinese soldiers to fend off the Japanese scourge. The Communists were no match for our combined strength, from the Republic of China's army, to the Australian Navy. Please consider this offer not as a grab of power, but as a grab at the lifeline that only the Republic of China may provide.

Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek Speaks to Factory Workers

Just Outside Beijing

Chiang rode inside a Rolls-Royce car with his Prime Minister Yingqin to a factory being built as a part of the National Reconstruction Program, they were almost there.
"Who are you hoping for Vice President?" Asked Yingqin.
"I trust Sun Fo, he's reliable, and also hard-working." Replied Chiang. The car pulled in at the factory. Yingqin pocked his head out the window as Chiang walked opened the door and walked out and he spoke.
"Li Zongren is popular in the party."
"He's too ambitious."
"Then why is he Acting Vice President?" Replied Yingqin. Chiang turned and said.
"He's very good at his job, and I needed to unite the party." Yingqin nodded and closed the window. Chiang put on a construction helmet and began touring the construction of the factory, talking to everyday workers and learning about the mechanisms of production. He wore his simple military jacket, unlike the warlords of old who didn't touch "dirty commoners" and wore extravagant outfits. He was popular because of this, he wore a simple jacket and spoke and shook hands with the workers. After speaking with numerous workers, he was lead to a pedestal with a microphone. The workers gathered and Chiang started to speak.
"Workers of China! I come to you, with the fresh feeling, and the jubilant feeling that we all now have. A Century of Humiliation is over! China now stands stronger then ever before. Independent, United, and Strong. But after years of war and foreign domination, we must right ourselves fully. Rebuild the parts of our nation devastated by the explosions and destruction brought by foreign guns. Bring jobs and plenty to people betrayed by corrupt and uncaring governments. Corrupt Emperors, then backstabbing warlords, then deceitful communists. We must rebuild, rebuild for a new China! A stronger China, a United China! To achieve this nation, a Greater China. We must put in all our sweat and toil to build this nation. From the ashes of destruction, China has risen. It has risen stronger then ever before, the Ming Emperors would feint to see the powerful China we have built, imagine the Hongwu Emperor falling over! Seeing the new China we have all built. The people of China, who have been cheated and lied too for so many years, finally are victorious. Years of resistance have reaped a new society. But we must make it better. Bring plenty to poor, so many Chinese live in squalor. It is the Mission of the KMT, the Principle Minsheng. The People's Livelihood, the responsibility of any government is to be accountable to the people. To uphold their standard of living and fight for them. That is my mission, the mission of the Kuomintang! Through factories and my farm subsidies plan, through the National Reconstruction Program, we will develop a stronger China and great wealth, and it is my duty to see that wealth benefit the poorest just as it does the richest. That is what I will make sure of, as we fight for a new China!"
The workers cheered happily as Chiang waved. He walked down to shake the hands of the workers, he smiled. This is what the fight is all about he thought.

KMT Landslide, Wins 1,872 of 2,000 Seats!

Article by Chang Li Laoxi
When the 500 Million Chinese people went to sleep last night, so many hoped for a Kuomintang government that would uphold the Three Principles of the People, the lead the people in constructing a new more powerful China. Well, in the morning when every radio channel, even the soap opera channels, announced the results of the legislative elections. The Legislative Yuan, or the Delegation of 2,000 as it is also known held elections yesterday, everywhere across the country, in the far reaches of Xinjiang, to the urban centers of Nanjing, Shanghai, and Beijing, to the monasteries of Lhasa, and the rice patties of Guangxi people were off from work, and went to polling stations, each one flying the nation flag to vote. The elections were the first fair and free elections in the united Republic of China, free of any foreign influence, of internal thuggery. The choice of the people of China. As they voted many noticed something different, the photo of our Founding Father Sun Yat Sen was surrounded by two national flags in most polling stations. Not one Kuomintang Party Flag and a National Flag, this is because the KMT Provisional Government of several decades is over. We are not one political party, we are a democratic nation, that is what it symbolized. The people overwhelmingly chose the KMT to run the government. Not just the radio, but in the city centers as portrayed in the headline, the results were announced. The results are as follows (party, party leader, seats):
Kuomintang (Chiang Kai-Shek): 1,872
Youth (Tseng Ch'i): 79
Democratic Socialist Party of China (Hsu Fu-Lin): 49

The results were met by jubilant crowds flooding the streets, singing, flag waving, and speeches by local KMT politicians across the country. The National Revolutionary Army celebrated across the country, cheering and flag-waving. The NRA is in the process of assimilating from the Kuomintang Army to the Army of all China, and is thrilled in that role of continuous defense of the Chinese nation and people. Chiang Kai-Shek waved to crowds from the Tiananmen Square rostrum, a massive flag-waving crowd had emerged, very excited for the future of China. The Kuomintang won with a diverse voting coalition, from rice farmers to the urban middle class, support for the KMT was vast and consistent throughout the country, this allowed them to gain a supermajority in the Legislative Yuan. Pledging the uphold the Three Principles of the People, and the ideology of Sun Yat Sen was very much supported by the populace. The Youth party, a nationalist movement, came in 2nd, with what it considered a good showing. The Democratic Socialists almost gained 50 seats, their election goal. We live in exciting times.

Tiajin Shipyards

General Sun Li-Jen and Defense Minister Bai Chongxi, friends and political allies strolled down the dock yards. Li Jen wore his regular combat uniform, he very much enjoyed the clothing he wore at forward command, where a shell could land at any moment, then the stuffy uniforms for meetings far from the front lines. Bai wore a ceremonial naval uniform, he carried a large notebook, with a blue leather cover with a white KMT star on it. It was the job of these men to reorganize and improve the army, and navy. For years the Republic's navy had been a joke, a few broken patrol boats stagnant in the South China Sea, while massive Japanese battleships cruised through it. But these two men had plans for a versatile navy, of destroyers and submarines, a quick navy and a deadly effective one. The watched on the shipyards as five Longtan-class destroyers were being built. Named after the battle in which the Kuomintang decisively defeated a warlord army, it represented a new navy for China. These ships would take a while to be built, but they were ahead of schedule. As Bai dutifully noted in his notebook. They then saw several workers building a structure under and just above the water, shouting to each other. Bai shouted to them.
"What's that for?!"
"It's a structure for submarine construction!!" Shouted the worker back. Bai nodded and jotted it down. Sun Li-Jen turned to Bai and spoke.
"Everything seems to be in good order." Bai nodded, but squinting at the central building.
"Yes they'll get points, except they're still flying the KMT flag. I'm a proud member of the Kuomintang, but the Provisional Government is gone. The KMT is not the sole power in China. It'll be a citation for them." Bai jotted in his notebook. He ripped out a short piece of paper and left it in a mailbox. "Time for the arms factories."

Addressed to: No. 10 Downing Street London, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington D.C

Chinese soldiers fought in the trenches with their trusted British and American brothers. We are eternally grateful for the alliance we forged against fascist aggression. That war forged a stronger and more united China through fire, and this united Republic seeks to stand up against the new aggressive force seeking to topple democracy and enforce dictatorship. The communist regimes, notably the USSR seek to expand their ideology on the free peoples of America and Europe. While the USSR has some elements of democracy, it is only the friends of Stalin who can participate. We must stand resolute and vigilant against this threat and in order to coordinate our efforts, it is requested that President Truman and Prime Minister Atlee come to Beijing, so we may discuss this threat, ways to defend ourselves, further cooperation and improving relations, and development. I await your speedy reply.

Chinese and Soviet soldiers both shed blood against the Japanese aggressor, and we are grateful for the assistance provided in the liberation of the Chinese people. We are open to the establish of formal diplomatic ties, an embassy, and a diplomatic channel. A good way to start this would be through a prisoner exchange, and we agree this should happen. Any NRA prisoners should be returned immediately to the Chinese Motherland, and any Communist prisoners we have of USSR origin will at once be returned to their motherland. Families will be united and we will have a good way of establishing diplomatic ties. However, we will not be altering any Chinese domestic policy, as we are not asking you to do so. I await your speedy reply.

The Republic of China

Addressed to: R.G. Casey Building John McEwen Crescent Barton ACT 0221 Australia

This message is received by the Chinese Government with great applause, it is indeed necessary to defend the Pacific and specifically the South Pacific from foreign aggression and expansionism. China is proud to have fought valiantly with Australia for years against Japanese aggression and now the new source of foreign aggression comes from the North, threatening all the free peoples of the world, especially that of Australia and China. The Communist ideology demands expansion against sovereign nations, and that is something that the republic of China will not permit. The USSR and its allies and satellite states pose a grave threat. Communism was very close to claiming China and it was the blood and valor of there men an women of the National Revolutionary Army that defeated the communist armies supported by other communist movements across the globe, seeking to destabilize the legitimate government of China. But communism is still finding a grip in Asia. It is our belief that the new French government will establish Communist regimes in Indochina. With these threats facing our two nations, in fact every Commonwealth and Asian nation faces this threat, of communist expansionism crossing our borders. We must support each other in this, and against ay new imperialist waves in Asia. We take your offer of friendship, and we believe we should support each other to defend our sovereignty, and stand resolute against Communist aggression. We will immediately begin to establish stronger diplomatic ties, and China is already working with the United States and the United Kingdom to deter communist aggression, and we believe that China and Australia should also work together to defend each other.

January the 2nd: Ba Dinh flower garden, Vietnam

Image

In beautiful garden of Ba Dinh history was already written once: on 2nd of September 1945, Ho-Chi Minh climbed upon one of its terraces and declared independence of Vietnam. The choice of location thus wasn't accidental, and although there was less people in attendance now, the garden was still filled with people. Many of them waved French and Vietnamese flags, some of them were soldiers, some of them were peasants and some carried around their bodies that aloof but uppity air and three piece suits that always betrayed a diplomat.

Henri Barbé, minister of finance and Marcel Thibaud, minister of foreign affairs were seated on the desk in the middle of open Vietnam bamboo gazebo.Everyone's eyes were on them as they took out their fountain pens and signed the document Vietnamese foreign service official spread out before them. Ho-Chi Minh signed this document beforehand, and it had been narrowly approved by National Assembly of France. It had been the first international treaty of their government.

After they signed a thunderous applause started rolling through the crowd. Soon there was the military brass band, opening with "Internationale" and playing "La Marseillaise" and "Tiến Quân Ca". Two ministers waved to the crowd and walked towards their car, while Vietnamese government bureaucrat climbed one of the terraces and read the document to the crowd:

Articles of mutual friendship and recognition between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and French Socialist Republic

I. French Socialist Republic therefore recognizes the Democratic Republic of Vietnam as sovereign and independent country.
II.French Far East Expeditionary Force will remain on the Territory of DRV for the next five years. However it will perform no military operations that aren't coordinated with military command of DRV government as described in the Constitution of Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
III. All collectivized and nationalized French industrial and trade enterprises present in Vietnam will have to apply for concessions of DRV government to continue their business on the Vietnamese soil. Private industries shall be nationalized by Vietnamese government according to their laws.
IV. Should Democratic Republic of Vietnam be attacked by foreign power, French Socialist Republic will aid in their defence.
V. Officers of FFEEF will train military officers of Democratic Republic of Vietnam and will be obliged to aid them in combating anti-communist militants on their territory.

Three secret communiques sent by Maurice Thorez on 3rd of January 1947.

To:Generalissimo Chaing-Kai Shek
Esteemed colleague
The government of France would like to congratulate you on your effort to transform your nation into the modern state, as well as on your victory in the recent elections. We look forward to the fruitful collaboration of our two nations.

I would like to bring to your attention the fact that another free nation liberated itself from imperialist yoke. It's brave people of Vietnam who decided to take their destiny into their own hands. We expect from Republic of China full recognition of their safety and guarantee of their future independence.
Comradely greeting. Thorez.

To: Government of German Democratic Republic
We congratulate your industrious workers on the achievement of the dream of great Karl Marx and Rosa Luxembourg. We would like to send our representatives into the GDR to establish diplomatic relations with Germany that rose up from the ruins.
Comradely greeting. Thorez.

To: Comrade Josif Visarionovich Dzugashvily Stalin
I wish you and your party luck in the upcoming election. On a side note, I wish to arrange requisition of military equipment from the Soviet Union. We are ready to pay for
200 KV 1 heavy tanks
1000 M1938 howitzers
20 Katyusha rocket systems

SDECE secret HQ,Paris, France

It was every interrogation scene that was ever conceived: two agents,(young catlike woman, and burly man)and a frightened older gentleman with exhausted and dishelved look upon his face. Metal table was between them, one wall mostly covered with suspicious looking mirror. A man was visibly shaking. Woman lit a cigarette and gestured towards the mirror. A small man in doctor scrubs walked in with a pitcher of water.

"Thirsty comrade? She said as she poured water into the tin cup."

The old man gobbled it greedely. He was there for ten hours without having a sip of water.

"You rest for a while, and then we are going to start again. I am sure this little "misunderstanding" will be resolved quickly."

The man and the woman walked out, meeting the doctor. Woman threw a curious glance his way:

"How long until the formula starts working?"

"Taking his general constitution and body weight into account fifteen minutes to half an hour. he wo--t notice any physilogical symptoms. Mabe slight vertigo and disorientation.'

Fifteen minutes later they walked in the room. This time, the bulky agent took the lead:

"Let's start again Mr. Leclerc. Have you ever been supporter of Vichy regime?"

Leclerc looked up. It seemed like he was going to speak. His mouth hung half open and huge beads of perspiration stood on his face.

"I..." it seemed he was struggling to find words. "I was a police officer...2

There was a bump when he fell down, clutching his chest. The doctor rushed in, and started taking in his pulse!

"God damn it! He's having a heaart attack!"

"Is it something your serum did..."

"It had to be. We need more testing our starting sample was too small. Well back to the drawing board, comrades." doctor looked up bravely facing the two detectives. We have just begun our search for the Serum of truth.I'm sure we will have more promising results in due time."

Rocket Powered Flying Bomb Succeeds in Testing, Train Systems Expanded to Warsaw Pact Countries

A Rocket Powered flying bomb tested at an undisclosed location in Kazakhstan, and neared 90 miles into the sky. It had two motors, a pulse jet engine that took it as high as possible. The cut out of the Jet engine triggered two powerful rocket motors which took the craft up to 90 miles in the air. The rockets were originally meant to carry the craft up to at least 100 miles, but unfortunately cut out early. The scientific data collected by the craft will be invaluable to Scientists in all the Warsaw Pact Nations, of which the USSR has begun to share scientific data with. The science of Nuclear Power has also been ongoing development in the USSR, and the F1 Reactor at Moscow has been used as a test bed for further possible components of reactors, such as a specialized generator recently added. The ultimate goal of the Soviet Nuclear Science Department is to refine the design of Nuclear Power plants, and possible build them in every Soviet Republic, as well as exporting the technology to the Warsaw Pact. Train Systems badly damaged during the war have begun to be repaired, and a new rail line between Poland and the USSR has linked both our countries and those in between them to each other in another way. Railways are also being constructed by the newly established GDR around its territory. The directive of the temporary German government before the German elections is to fix bombed out German cities, and to repair the rail and highway systems of their country.

From, 10373 Moscow, The Kremlin and the office of Premier Joseph Stalin

To, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hu Shih 522 Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Road, Beijing, ROC

Greetings, Minister. I am writing in response to your previous message concerning the establishment of formal diplomatic ties. A prisoner exchange is a reasonable proposal for a start. As I write to you, a train carrying 63 prisoners of war captured in the USSR from NRA forces that trespassed into the Soviet Union at the Manchurian border is bound for Beijing. I would request that you do the same, and order the dispatch of a train carrying any captured Soviet volunteer forces that were fighting in China. Your countries stubbornness regarding domestic policy is understandable, although I'd ask you why your nation does not let Communist parties exist if your country does not fear them.

Best regards, Premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Joseph Stalin

To, Maurice Thorez, Government of France

Greetings, Comrade Thorez. I have already approved that weapons transaction that you requested. Payment can be negotiated with the Soviet Ambassador in Paris, who I have sent instructions too. I would like to offer the French Government the chance to join the Warsaw Pact with the Soviet Union and her allies in Eastern Europe. At the next congress of Warsaw Pact Countries in Berlin the French Nation is invited to send a delegation. I would also like to offer the French Government the chance to send scientists in the rocketry field to the USSR, where we are testing some of the most advanced rockets in the world. Thank you for your best wishes in the upcoming election. I believe my party shall prevail again, but I worry about the Trotskyite Parties that may gain in the People's Assembly. Sometimes I wonder if I should have exiled Trotsky for destroying the Ukrainian Free Territory against Lenin's wishes. As it is, I am very busy right now planning for the election and supervising other programs.

Best wishes, Premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin

10 Downing Street, London
January 3rd, 1947

Clement Attlee sat in his usual seat at the table in the lavish cabinet room of Number Ten Downing Street, his home and quite literal seat of power. The election had been a resounding success, the Labour Party had won the greatest landslide election in British political history, winning a huge 239 seats from the Conservative, Liberal and Liberal National parties. Already, however, his government had taken a huge hit... The independence of India was a bitter pill to swallow, the 'Jewel in the crown of the British Empire' had been wrenched from the nation's grasp and the shock had led several of Attlee's ministers to resign outright. Attlee was unwilling to give up more of the empire if only to protect his government's future, the Labour Party had never before enjoyed such power as their only previous Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald's leadership was shaky and his first term of office was over before the year was up.

In his somewhat weathered hands was grasped a letter, direct from the Chinese foreign affairs minister, Hu Shih. It called for talks over the handover of Hong Kong, a ridiculous concept, Attlee thought, as the lease was to end in 1997, fifty years from now. He'd send a representative, of course, it would be rude to ignore the new Asian superpower but he couldn't help but feel the Chinese were trying to move too quickly and he had no intention of sullying his party's name any further by acting weak. Of course, the truth was that he was weak, the whole country was, six years of total war and complete military and economic mobilisation had broken the back of the British nation, it was in huge amounts of debt and aid from the Americans had dropped tenfold since the end of the war and it seemed British industry had hit a second Great Depression. Needless to say, giving up the rich industrial Hong Kong would not help the situation.

Attlee made his reply, keeping it strictly formal yet not unfriendly, he didn't want to alienate the Chinese already. He graciously agreed to talks and even offered to host them in Hong Kong or Singapore to show his anticipation for negotiations to begin but the message was hollow, Attlee didn't much care for the Chinese nation, it's greatness had always really been a facade and, as most in Britain took it, the huge nation was really shattered by the war to a point perhaps worse than the United Kingdom. Attlee made sure to include no mention of Hong Kong's handover, he didn't want to seem keen and perhaps thought that if he didn't mention the subject it would go away on its own like a bad smell. Nonetheless, the reply was brief yet generously polite to the Chinese nation and leader, praising Chiang-Kai-Shek as 'one of the great war leaders' when most of his efforts were towards the communists within China itself rather than the Japanese foe, Attlee didn't want to insult his new friends however and was gracious in his approval of a meeting.
New Edom wrote:Unwerth laughed. “Such hen lobsters are the Vionnans. But then, every Vionnan is half a sodomite."

Vice President of the Republic of China Li Zongren

Chiang to be President, Li to be Vice President!

Article by Lao Hsieh Qi

The Legislative Yuan met in it's first session to elect the President and Vice President of China. It took a whole hour for the 2,000 delegates to get in, take their seats, and prepare themselves. The Speaker of the Legislative Yuan Mo Teh-hui, Former Civil Governor of Fengtian called the Delegation to order, hitting his gavel twice. After some procedural steps, the real action began. The first fair Presidential election, the last one in 1923 was corrupted by the vile imperialist warlords of the ZhilI Clique, who attempted to bribe the entire Chamber! This was truly history. The nominees for President were read aloud. Chiang Kai-Shek of the Kuomintang, Ju Zheng (The Head of our Judicial System) of the Kuomintang, and Tseng Ch'i of the Youth. The delegates were given 10 minutes to talk, deliberate, or think. After 10 minutes of discussion, the Speaker returned the Chamber to order. The delegates would raise a placard with the national flag on it when their desired candidate name was called. The Speaker called out the names and after 15 minutes of counting the placards, he declared the results.
Chiang Kai-Shek-Kuomintang: 1,711 (WINNER)
Ju Zheng-Kuomintang: 210

Tseng Ch'i-Youth: 79
The placards were raised in a red, white, and blue wave for Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek. Elected by the Legislative Yuan as President of the Republic of China and Generalissimo of the Armed Forces. The speaker declared Chiang Kai-Shek the winner, and congratulated the other candidates. Now onto the Vice Presidential Election, the field opened up with six candidates. After several rounds of voting, the choice was narrowed to two. Li Zongren and Sun Fo. The delegates prepared to vote, the same procedure was followed, and the results were announced by the Speaker.
Li Zongren-Kuomintang: 1,112 (WINNER)
Sun Fo-Kuomintang: 888

It was very close, extremely close. The results could were in fact recounted, which each member being forced to vote the same way, the result was confirmed. Li Zongren was announced as Vice President. The inaugural ceremony was held in the afternoon, in which Chiang Kai-Shek pledged to defend and faithfully serve the people of China, the Republic of China, the constitution, and the Three Principles of the People. Li Zongren pledged to do the same as well, shown below. Chiang and Li then turned to a picture of our Founding Father Sun-Yat-Sen flanked by two national flags, and saluted while the national anthem played. Chiang speaking in a plain outfit and sash, and Li Zongren in his military uniform. Crowds took the streets, thousands of people in every city and many rural towns, singing and cheering, once the results were announced in their area.

The Republic of China

Addressed to: Paris, Office of the Prime Minister of France

We are happy to see decolonization efforts by the new French government, to give the people of Asia Democratic choice in their government. We are prepared to recognize the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, provided the French government continues this effort of Democratic Self-Determination and supports the independent choice of the Asian people without foreign influence and does not support communist movements in stable, sovereign nations such as the Republic of China. We believe this is fair and in order.

Moscow:
A man was waiting in a train station, anxiously waiting to board a train. Vital intelligence, was reportedly being carried along this line, so the man could not miss the opportunity. He gathered his bags, checked his watch, and boarded the train. Walking along the cabin, he noticed the person he was supposed to keep track of. The man took a seat within earshot, and made sure his knife was with him. One of his contacts supplied him with the tools he'll need for this mission. Taking out a bottle of liquid, he pretended to drink, but actually doused a napkin with the substance. Then, he waited.

Somewhere in the Outback:
The SCA agent was busy interrogating the target. The agent was cloaked in a black suit, with a balaclava and goggles. They had a voice modifier, so the agent's identity was kept completely anonymous. Already, the target was bloodied, but the SCA agent did not stop with the torture.
"Who are you workin' for?" The SCA agent, as they asked the question, tightened a rope around the target's throat. "What were you doin' near the port is Darwin?" The SCA agent took a serrated knife and dragged it across the target's forehead. "Listen here mate, this can all stop, just let us do with you as we need."

Darwin:
The city was still in recovery from the heavy and immense bombings the Japanese laid down during the war. The streets still had holes in, which repair crews were still filling. The port, was still heavily under repairs. Sunken ships were being scrapped and repaired, with some being recycled into use for the Australian navy. A new airfield was being constructed, to help defend against air raids from the north. Sections off the city were still taped off to the general public.

The following is for Soviet eyes only.
10373 Moscow, The Kremlin and the office of Premier Joseph Stalin
Hello Comrade Stalin,
I would like to propose a deal for you. Would you like to cooperate with Australia in developing Australian missiles? We have nothing, and you are the foremost nation in developing missiles. We are willing to offer what you need and request. Please consider our offer not as an attempt to spy or sabotage you, but as cry for support, that my allies cannot provide. Spasibo, tovarishch Stalin.

[OOC: I'm waiting for someone to claim the spy I'm torturing]

Tiajin

Bai Chongxi watched as the Hunt-class destroyer HMS Altherstone cruised into port, it's guns impressive and daunting. The British Naval Jack flew for the last time onboard the ship, as it had been bought by the Republic of China. Bai had just arrived from morning prayers at a local mosque, and had quickly changed from Islamic clothing to his ceremonial naval uniform and hat. He watched with a few soldiers guarding him as the ship cruised in. As it finally stopped, the gangplank came down and the British crew came off. Bai approached for a brief ceremony, he saluted the esteemed British allies, smiled and showed his thanks. The British flag was lowered and folded with great respect and given to the British crew, the Chinese flag was raised and the crew moved on. "God save the King" and the anthem of the Republic of China was played, once the ceremony was over. The ship would be rechristened the Yenangyaung, after the battle in Burma where Chinese and British soldiers fought together. Bai waited for the Black-Swan Class Swoops to emerge over the horizon, another purchase. Soon to be the Yunnan and the Song Jiaoren, a heroic revolutionary assassinated by cowardly and evil warlords.

Outside Nanjing

This once-great city, devastated by Japanese bombing and the atrocious Rape of Nanjing, an atrocious and horrific war crime. The convoy of cars each flying the national flag entered the city, President Chiang and Vice President Li Zongren stood in the cars waving to the people. Both in simple military uniform, they were not aristocratic warlords or godlike emperors, they were battle-hardened soldiers, everyday people. They waved to the people and smiled, cheering and waving the national flag. The cities were covered in construction vehicles, rebuilding and reconstruction buildings destroyed by repeated bombings and Japanese soldiers. Progress was visible, people noticed that piles of rubble and debris filled lots become stable, well-built buildings. The two men finally reached the construction site. A very big site. Vehicles moved about, transferring cement and the factories progress was visible. The National Reconstruction Program was making great strides, it was well-managed, by government experts and the innovative and creative minds of the private industries. The workers were paid fair wages and had fair hours and good conditions as according to Minsheng. The factory would build basic civilian products, so people would spend and the economy would grow. Chiang and Li inspected the factory in construction helmets, each helmet adorned with the National Emblem. Chiang and Li shook hands and had lengthy conversations with workers, pitching in when they could. This was the progress of the program.

Outside Shanghai

General Sun Li-Jen had gone to Shanghai to inspect the construction of a new army base and arms factory nearby. He walked through the base, inspecting the troop barracks, the guard posts, making sure everything was in good order. It was, Chiang Kai-Shek rifles and American rifles imported during the war were paraded by troops for the General, and everything looked in good order. The base had just been constructed after many army bases had been destroyed or damaged by war. It had a functioning arsenal, barrack system, alarm system, guard towers, and the officers were competent and loyal. From the base he drove to the new factory which was built in 1934, damaged by Japanese bombardment in 1937, and repaired in 1946. It now produced weapons. Li-Jen drove to the factory, he was greeted by a line of soldiers who had served under him in Yunnan during the war, he hugged his comrades, and they guided him into the factory. He watched the assembly line, workers each doing their part in building a Type 24 "Chiang Kai-Shek rifle." Li-Jen was guided down the conveyor belt, the beginning saw long metal tubes and bits of metal mechanisms, by the end, Li-Jen could pick up the fully functioning and well put together rifle. He was very impressed, he asked one manager.
"How many do you produce every day?" The man turned, just tweaking his mustache.
"Oh, this factory produces around 1,200 to 1,500 Type 24 rifles in an 8 Hour Workday. We build tens of thousands of bullets for the guns each days." Li Jen nodded, impressed, he was guided to the bullet conveyor belt. He watched the casings stand on the conveyor belt, go through a mechanism placing the bullet on on it, and then it went down to the quality control. Two men checked he bullets, throwing out anything that fell apart, or was faulty. Then the bullets went into boxes, and tops hammered on. Li Jen was very impressed, he took one bullet from quality control, put it in a rifle and walked out to the yard. He shot the gun. Perfect. He nodded and smiled, very impressed.

The Australian Outback

The man was barely awake, barely conscious. He wavered between awake and asleep. He felt pain but couldn't comprehend it. He could make out the question, he had lost discipline. It was time. He said five words he had been trained to say, "Zhou Enlai. Mission to Australia."

United States, 3rd of January

The new 80th United States congress has been assembled. In the senate, the Democrats hold 49 seats and the Republicans 47, a significant change from from the previous 56-39-1 balance, but one which leaves the Democrats still in power. Alben W. Barkley will continue to serve as majority leader, with Scott W. Lucas as his deputy, while Wallace H. White Jr. will serve as minority leader for the Republican opposition. The Republican voterbase is concentrated in the west, northeast, and midwest, while Democrat support remains strong in the south and southwest.

With the highest number of seats since 1931, The Republican party needs only 3 more seats to gain a majority, and it looks like the upcoming elections in 1948, with the Republicans seeking to nominate Dwight Eisenhower, or perhaps a governor/former governor such as Harold Stassen or Thomas E. Dewey, may result in the first Republican president in 16 years. The approval of Truman and the Democrat establishment at home certainly seems to need a boost, but for the moment, the Truman administration is concentrating far beyond the borders of the United States.

It is with great appreciation of China's commitment to the Sino-American friendship that I gladly accept the offer to meet in Beijing. I hope that the friendship between our great nations will continue to grow, especially as a result of this particular state visit, and that our countries shall forge a close alliance that will last for many years to come. I am confident in China's ability to provide adequate security, but will nonetheless be bringing four USSS guards with me, and proper accommodations should be made for them.

In addition to China, I have decided to go on a wider east Asian tour, visiting Japan and American-occupied Korea as well, to encourage American-Korean-Japanese cooperation and mutual respect and to build the economies, societies, and militaries of Japan and Korea to their full potential as allies of both the United States and the Republic of China, and I trust that China will be a reliable partner of America in shaping a unified policy in regards to these prospective states.

Coffee House Bohème, Paris, France

Image

Maurice Thorez enjojed spending his work days in Coffee houses and restaurants of downtown Paris. He would drink long cups of coffee, his bodyguards seated at table next to him while he responded to international correspondance and drafted new governments proposal.

The question of colonial organization troubled him severely- as a loyal Leninist for most of his life, Thorez despised colonialism and now he was a Prime minister of one of greatest colonial powers. People in the colonies protested french rule, but letting go of the colonies before he secured off-shore interests of his country was bound to get his coalition government voted out of power. The fact that some of those colonies could adopt anti-communist government worried him even more. However, Franch capitalists have exploited people in other parts of the world for centuries, it was up to him to find better solution to these lands, keeping them loyal, but independant. An idea of kind of "French Soviet Union" was suggested to him by Ho-Chi Minh last week. The succes he had with independence of former French Indochina- now independant but umbrilically connected Democratic Republic of Vietnam encouraged him to seek similar solution for other colonial territories. he will have to consult long and hard with his party comrades, coalition partners and, after all, colonial communist parties to achieve that, and that will take some time.

he glanced around. Two of his bodyguards pretended to read newspapers, while bunch of Parisienne young drank their beverages and chit-chatted around them. He spread several of the reports before himself, took his golden fountain pen out and started responding to international communiques:

To: Esteemed comrade Joseph Visarionovich Giuashvilli Stalin
Honorable Generalissimo
I am glad that our weapon transaction was approved this fast. The price of your weapons had been payed to Your ambassador in full. I believe you follow recent discussions in the UN regarding Germany. With them in mind it might be imprudent to plan meeting of allies of Soviet Union in a newly formed country that instists upon it's neutrality. I'm suggesting location be changed for now, and when you inform me of new location I will send president of France, Leon Blum to represent us at that summit. We will also be sending 10 million franks worth of medical supplies as part of our post-war rebuilding and reconstruction programme. I am certain that pharmaceuticals and medical equipment will come as a relief to those parts of USSR that felt most of fascist devastation in the recent war.
Thorez
.

To: Hu-shih Minister of Foreign affairs of Republic of China

Dear sir
We are thankfull that you have supported our decolonization efforts by recongizing current democratic vietnamese government. I guarantee you once more that France and her allies have no desire of taking any kind of action against China. To prove that we are sending 2 million franks worth of aid in medical supplies, as well as 10 of our medicine proffesionals recently graduated from Ecole de France to aid you in post-war reconstruction. However we have one request: i heard that some people in China are imprisoned as communists. We would like their release to the newly formed Democratic Republic of Vietnam. There they will be far from threatening inner security of your regime, while still contributing to the international communist movement.Thorez

We have trust in the French government that France or the DRV has no hostile intentions towards the Republic of China, and we graciously accept the aide you offer. However, you approach the numerous CCP military commanders and political leaders who committed numerous wartime atrocities to their own people when in hiding in Shaanxi while the Kuomintang resisted Japan. They also harbor a deep hatred for the democratically elected government of the Kuomintang, and seek an immediate return to revolutionary activity against the government. Handing them over to a bordering communist state which may have no ill will towards the Republic of China, is nevertheless extremely concerning and not something the Republic of China is ready to do without our concerns addressed.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

Image

From, 10373 Moscow, The Kremlin and the office of Premier Joseph Stalin

To, Maurice Thorez, Government of France

Hello again Mr. Thorez. Thank you for the prompt payment to our ambassador in France. The money was wired to the Moscow Central Bank this morning. Your gift of ten million Francs worth of medical equipment to help the people of my country has been noted. Medical supplies are in short supply in the USSR at this time, as we are still recovering from the post-war rebuilding efforts in the Ukrainian SSR and Belorussian SSR.
Personally, I do not buy the Western promises of a Neutral Germany. If that German state is under the Capitalistic system that infects the WEst like a cancer, I can see no true state of neutrality being possible. With recent memories regarding the actions of a united, militarized, German state I do not believe reunification is currently possible. On another note, some of the German scientists and my countries own scientists working on our Rocketry program have informed me that they believe they can break the American altitude record set earlier this year. The Soviet Union will accept Journalists from anywhere in the world to the test, including France and the Capitalist States. I am also extending the offer to France of a possible partnership in Rocketry.

~ Joseph Stalin, the office of the Premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Offices of L'Humanité newspapers, Paris, France

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/humanite-newspaper-in-1947-picture-id121507005?s=612x612

The hustle of journalist going to and fro between redaction rooms, nervous shouts, cigarette smoke and laughter filled the offices of L' Humanite, for a long time leading communist newspaper. The Parisienne daily paper had in the last month, thanks to government incentives that enabled stronger marketing campaign, became leading newspaper in the Hexagon, numbering millions of readers and slowly hiring correspondants to every part of the world. Now most of the desk editors stood in the large room, filled by clutter of old furniture, cardboard boxes and blackboards with rows and rows of chalked numbers and titles. The main editor Robert Velachion walked among the desks, speaking to thegroup of desk editors, almost shouting to speak over the hustle of people, phones and printing machines that filled the office.

"Listen here comrades, I have recieved the news from comrade Prime ministers. It seems that our great father Stalin is inviting us to the rocket launch. Now both great father Stalin and Comrade Thorez want as many journalists as possible to be present and it is crucial that we are the first to inform workers of France when that great Soviet rocket flies higher then those American ones. So I want every desk to send their best reporter who knows Russian to the launch. We will show the workers why they want to have father Stalin as their ally instead of those American and British Capitalist failures."

Maurice Thorez had stresfull couple of days. In an hour he had a plane at Orly airport that was to fly him to Ivory Coast to meet with representatives of African Agricultural Union. They might prove to be instrumental in reorganization of the colonies. He wanted French Socialist Union and they were certainly socialist elements within AAU that could help him bring strong socialist rule to power in French West Africa. Phone talk with Chinese prime minister went better than he expected. He had managed to secure freedom for 12 CCP communists that were imprisoned by KMT. That was power of diplomacy many of his hardline comrades didn't get. There was one more matter to address before he left- the matter of post-war reconstruction of course. He sat at his typewriter, streched his legs and began to write:

To: Leslie White, Prime Minister of Australia
Respected mr. White
Since your country presides over UN Security Council i would like to request a meeting to be called as soon as possible. As you probably knonw, two new independant countries, Vietnam and GDR have been formed and are to be accepted into the United Nations. Also, Security Council, as a body that is tasked with maintaining wordwide peace and security should try to form a committee that would asses costs of wartime destruction and come up with a coherent plan of reconstruction. Chinese-Vietnamese Border

Chinese troops had already been deployed to the border to handle the influx of Catholic and anti-communist refugees entering China, but now something much more secretive and high-profile was taking place. On an isolated and discreet jungle path 12 Chinese soldiers in uniform wearing their distinctive army cap, one of which carrying the national flag stood. Behind them, a Type 95 Ha-Go light tank captured from the Japanese. Inside, 12 men with gags and blindfolds sat, handcuffed. On the other side of the invisible line were five Vietnamese soldiers in nón lá rice hats. Two French soldiers in distinctive Kepis stood. The Chinese waited in silence, their radio buzzed. They checked it, said a few words into it, and lead the prisoners out of the top of the tank. The lined up in front of the Chinese soldiers, the Chinese soldiers aimed their weapons at the men. The officer shouted and the men began to walk forward. As they crossed the border, the guns were lowered, the Chinese drove away. What had they got in return? Several millions of aide to China.

Hainan Island

Hainan jutted out into the sea, it was close to Macau and Hong Kong, and close to Vietnam. China looked out into the South China Sea, and looked at it's navy. A growing navy, but at present, woefully underprepared and unready for naval conflict. Perhaps it would be could if China could also fight it's naval battles from land. On the edge of Hainan Island towards the sea, a fort was under construction, a coastal fort with massive artillery guns. Some of the biggest and best guns used in the war were dragged over to Hainan and fitted into the cement and steel emplacements and walls now being construction across the area. The fort was soon taking shape. General Xue Yue known as the "God of War" to some Chinese or the "Patton of the East" to some Westerners, oversaw construction. Giant cement trucks poured cement into the right places, and steel was fitted in as armor in many places. Docks were being constructed, so ships could also race out to see under the cover of costal guns when necessary.

Manchuria

In the snowy mountains of Manchuria, construction vehicles moved cement and steel, dragged artillery guns and soldiers marched back and forth carrying rifles and supplies. The shape of the fort was visible, the basic framework was done, and now steel and cement reinforcement was moving in. The National Flag and the Army Flag was visible. Fort Jiaoren, named after Song Jiaren, a hero of the Xinhai Revolution and martyr at the hands of the treacherous warlords, would soon stand proud in Manchuria, defending China against foreign aggression and expansionism. Watching from a truck stuck in a snowbank was Sun Li-Jen in a furry winter coat. Watching, very impressed, he urged the driver to work harder digging the snowbank as he watched the construction. He wanted to see the soldiers. When he finally arrived, he inspected the constriction and saluted the soldiers. He looked out at the highest gunpoint, observing the range. One of the officers pointed to a far off area, mountains, ice, and snow.
"That's the Soviet Union." Said the officer. Sun nodded.
"Are we in range?" Asked Sun.
"Easily." Said the officer. "We could destroy any border positions here." Sun laughed.
"Well once the fort is completed, the Soviets will really have a headache. Is Vladivostok in range?"
"No, I'm sorry, no Russian ports are in range, but that's something we can do later. Make sure they won't do anything stupid." Sun agreed, and strolled down to the lower levels of the fort.

The Skies Near Manchuria

A MiG-9 surveillance aircraft with Soviet markings on its wings flew over the Soviet-Chinese Border near Manchuria. The pilot banked left, taking him closer to Chinese airspace and well within any radar's range within China. The camera systems on the bottom of the plane pivoted towards a large artificial construction in the mountains on the Chinese side of the border. The aircraft approached closer to the border, banking left. At the Chinese fort now the hum of a jet engine could be heard. The modified MiG's cameras took more photos, the Chinese flag and the Chinese Army's flag clearly visible in multiple photos. The Chinese fort under construction near the Soviet border had been spotted by a routine patrol.

Several Hours Later, Soviet Far East Air Defense Headquarters, Vladivostok

Two men stood in a busy office room as people buzzed about around them, both in military uniform. A small lamp illuminated the recently developed surveillance photos.

"Sergei, are you sure these are legitimate?"

"Yes Ivan, I checked multiple times. Two more aircraft have gone by since and taken photos of the same fortress."

One of the men pointed to several objects in the photo.

"Are those artillery guns, Sergei?

"Yes."

"Then we have a problem. Get me the Premier."

One Hour later, Airbase near Chinese Border

An alarm klaxon sounded over the runways of the airfield, a voice in Russian ordering Pilots to get into the air, and Bomber crews to get to their aircraft. The sound of a MiG-9 fighter taking off overpowered the speakers for a moment, the plane arching into the sky to join a group of its comrades. The flag of the Soviet Union fluttered in the wake of the aircraft. A bomber took to the air on another runway, joining the formation above the base. Ten minutes later, the formation of sixteen MiG-9 Fighters and four TU-4 bombers turned towards China, and the Chinese fortress in the mountains. As they passed, artillery guns on the ground trained their guns to China, and rocket launchers raised their racks to aim at the offending Chinese fortress.

Elections in the Soviet Union, Trotskyists and Moderates Gain Council Seats, Elections in GDR

Yesterday, citizens of all SSRs cast their votes in local and Union elections, the first since the war. The end of the war has seen a change in Soviet political rhetoric, with a cooler stance towards the Western Powers and a stronger focus on rebuilding efforts. The results of the elections have reflected this. Comrade Joseph Stalin still remains Premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, but only by a narrow margin. As anyone familiar with the structure of Soviet government knows, local elections affect the USSR more than Union elections. Every Soviet that governs an SSR votes into power a representative for that SSR to the Supreme Soviet in Moscow. In that way, every local election affects the whole of the USSR, and eventually determines the future leader of our nation. In Ukraine and other Western SSRs, the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) won out, but not by such a large margin as it had in elections before the war. The SLSU (Socialist League of the Soviet Union) gained as well as various Trotskyite parties, which have split numerous times. The SLSU is very strict Marxist party that has its platform describing a gradual shift to full Communism, and cooperatizing state owned industries. The SLSU is also known for its internationalist foreign policy. In the West, the SLSU gained massive support, and took away many seats from the CPSU. Stalin is still Premier, but only by three seats. In the GDR, Wilhelm Pieck has won the election, and will become the first President of the GDR. He promised a plan to rebuild Berlin and other devastated cities while giving power over the means of production to the workers through new organizational changes in state industry. His message of a better future propelled him to win by nearly 8% of the vote. He has also been a proponent for a gradual reunification with West Germany.

American Altitude Record Broken by Hybrid Jet-Rocket Zvezda-2

Today in Kazakhstan the Z-2 Jet-Rocket hybrid spacecraft launched into the sky. Powered by two Jets for the first phase of the flight, it used them until the atmosphere became too thin for them to function properly. At that time, a large rocket engine on the back of the craft fired, and shot it up further. Journalists from the USSR, the new Eastern European States, and France watched from a secure bunker with Soviet and German Scientists as the craft ascended. The Z-2 broke the American altitude record set by a modified V-2, and went the highest a man made object has ever gone. The scientific data retrieved from the craft will be shared with scientists all over the world, and Joseph Stalin has personally thanked every scientist who took part in the Z-2's development and launch. The next goal of the Soviet Rocket Program is to attach a camera to a Zvezda model craft to obtain images of the Earth. Rocket tests in Kazakhstan have also shown promise, with the possibility of using a rocket to reach the end of the atmosphere being explored.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CORRESPONDENCE - UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS

To, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hu Shih 522 Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Road, Beijing, ROC

From the office of the Premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin

I will skip the usual greetings, as this is a matter of life and death. On a routine patrol over the Soviet Border with China in Manchuria, one of our aircraft spotted a Chinese fortification in the mountains. Normally this would not be a problem, but artillery guns were sighted capable of striking Soviet border positions. As this letter is delivered to you via telegram, there is a flight of Soviet Bombers and their escort craft bound for the offending fort. You no doubt know exactly which fort I am writing about. If, by the time the aircraft arrive at the fortress they cannot see artillery guns being withdrawn deeper into China, they are authorized to use appropriate force to make sure there is no threat the USSR and her allies. Do not take this as a declaration of war. The USSR has no wish for war of any sort, but will not tolerate any threats to our border security like this. You and I both know that neither of our countries want a war. So ask your superiors and Generals to make the right decision.

Beijing, Foreign Affairs Ministry

Hu Shih emerged from deliberations from the State Council and began to write.

The Republic of China

Addressed to: The 10373, the Kremlin, Moscow HIGH PRIORITY CORRESPONDENCE

After appropriate deliberations with the State Council, and communications with the Command of Fort Jiaren, we have agreed to withdraw the artillery guns to refer to within the fort. We are not moving the guns away from the fort, but we are no longer pointing them at the Red Army border positions. This guns are not a threat to the Soviet Union, but rather serve as a deterrent and serve as a weapon of self-defense. These weapons will never be used unless the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics attacks the Republic of China or one of our valued allies. China has absolutely no intention of starting a war with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and you have our assurances that these weapons pose absolutely no threat to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, unless the Union decides to attack China or one of it's allies.

Fort Jiaren

After a brief phone call with Beijing, the commanders of the fort marched up to the location of the main howitzers and other guns aimed at the USSR and ordered them to be moved backward, and the hole for the gun shut with a steel door. It was done. The officers just made sure the door could be opened closed, which it could and then closed it. Flak guns still scanned the sky however, on the watch for any Soviet preemptive strike.

Over Fort Jiaren

The sound of the propeller engines of T-4 bombers flying reverberated over the landscape, accompanied by the sound of MiG-9 jet engines. The Chinese guns had not been sighted, and were now inside the fort. The formation of bombers and fighters did another pass to make sure they'd seen the guns were no threat anymore, and began to turn back towards Russia. The Soviet aircraft were now heading back to Vladivostock, another war averted only by the Chinese deciding to back down.

From the office of the Premier of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin

Hello again Mr. Shih. My officers have informed me that you have written to me without lying, and the guns have indeed been withdrawn into the fortress. Thank you for making the right decision. I am very pleased to hear that the artillery guns are not aimed at Red Army border positions, and pose no threat to my country during peacetime. I can assure you that the Soviet Union will not attack any of China's allies without cause, and will not start a war in Eastern Asia.

Kaifeng Air Force Base

Kaifeng was a bit of a drive from Beijing, but Chiang was excited to see his air force on display. He stepped out of the car, joined by General Sun-Li Jen and General "Hundred Victories" Wei Lihuang. He stood in his trademark cape and military uniform. They stood in a green field, the airstrip visible in the distance. One of the soldiers guarding them brought chairs and drinks. All three men sat down and enjoyed a variety of non-alcholic beverages. They waited for about 15 minutes, before the whirl of propellers was heard. Five planes screamed through the sky, spinning, and flying in obscure and difficult formations. Chiang, Wei, and Sun clapped. The planes then began to fly downwards heading towards a broken down and irreparable Japanese tank from the war. All three men watched with intent interest, the others with them watching as well. The planes began to fire machine guns and they turned up at the last second. Chiang's cape blew out of control as the planes flew by, he laughed as it covered up Wei's face. Wei struggled to get it off as the planes what looked like strafing the tank again. But it was already a mess of burnt and broken metal now. It flew towards the three men. It flew 20 meters above them, thrilling and exciting. Wei had just gotten the cape off when it flew back in his face. Chiang helped him get if off this time. Chiang laughed at the hilarious and exciting show of aviation might.
"General Lihuang, besides all the fun shows, is that our most modern plane?" asked Chiang as they walked towards the base.
"I'm afraid so Generalissimo. The Russians are building high-speed jets and many of our planes are bi and triplanes." replied Wei.
"That's a problem. Our air force is antiquated!" said Chiang, very worried.
"I hear the Americans are about to put a jet into service." Commented Sun. "The Sabre."
"Once the Americans are flying it, we must have one." said Chiang.
"I agree, but still, it will take years to truly build the air force of an Asian Superpower!" replied Wei. "Our Rocket problem is a few labs in Shanghai! The Russians and Americans are building missiles to cross oceans!"
"All in due time..." Replied Sun as they walked to inspect the air base.

Cape Town:
The police were hard at work, as during the war, crime skyrocketed, with no guards around. With crime running rampant, the police were ever expanding. There were many fears that Cape Town was turning into a police city, almost bordering on fascism, which many of South Africa's finest tried to prevent during the war. Of the 330,500 troops South Africa sent, 12,000 did not come back. A heavy military presence could be felt to be building up, with many knowing, but not saying, that South Africa was going to invade Communist Mozambique.

Durban:
The port city was busy stocking up on ships, with more capable light and heavy cruisers. The British did have the very capable, and battle-tested Swiftsure class of light cruisers, which South Africa needed to retain superiority in South African waters from Soviet subs. The Americans had the very capable Baltimore class of heavy cruisers. However, with the rise of Soviet missile technology, the Baltimores had to be modified.

Greetings,
As we are all allies, South Africa would like to request to purchase ships, to better help defend our oath of defending African waterways from Communist aggression. As such, we would like to purchase 7 Baltimore-class heavy cruisers. It it does not bother or hinder you, may you please modify them with anti-missile systems? We would also like to purchase 10 Swiftsure-class light cruisers. Thank you.

Corrupt Officials Arrested

Article by Lao Hsieh Qi

Several Local Officials of Hubei Province were arrested by the National Police Agency. 12 Officials for Hubei Province were arrested, some taken from their homes, and some on the street for Graft and Bribery. Hubei Police Spokesman said, "we'd be investigating the matter for quite some time when we felt the evidence was more than circumstantial we consulted a judge, and we were given the approval to arrest them. Their trial shall begin soon." The corrupt and selfish officials had been using their offices to accumulate personal wealth, and had hidden questionable and illegal financial activities through illegal budgeting maneuvers. Vice President Li Zongren decisively condemned the treachery saying, "these activities are disgusting and represent true selfishness and greed, we will be working to cleanse our government from officials who serve their wallets rather then the people and the nation of China." No comment from the accused. We here at Central Daily News condemn any attempt by government officials to make money off the backs of the people of China, and we applaud the government and the police for taking this decisive and necessary action.

Factory Near Mukden

Chiang's concerns about aircraft had led to a deal with the United Kingdom. In exchange for Vampire fighter jets, China would build 25% of them in China, and would receive half of them free of charge. A newly repaired factory in Mukden was going towards the production of Type 24 Rifles, but would now would produce Vampire Jets. Workers already hopped to the factories, turning metal into structure, according to the British designs provided by the RAF. On platforms in the factories, crude frames of the jet were tweaked and plates brought in, the interior also being fitted. The jet engines waiting to be emplaced, the Republic of China Air Force aimed to become a feared and deadly force.

The United States will agree to, at this time, sell 3 of the 7 requested Baltimore-class heavy cruisers from our current stock, and produce another 4 specifically for South African use. The price of these ships combined will be 280 million US dollars. We will modify the vessels with the requested systems without any additional cost.

Japan and South Korea

The United States government, under an executive order by president Truman, has established official armed forces for the Allied occupation government of Japan (under Douglas McArthur), the United States Military Government of the Ryukyu Islands (under Frederic Lord Hayden) and the United States Army Military Government in Korea (under Archer L. Lerch) for the purpose of beginning the peaceful transfer from foreign military protection to national military protection and self-determination: the Japanese Armed Forces, Ryukyu Island Armed Forces, and Korean Armed Forces; The same order has also established a plan to recruit the people living under these American occupation governments into the new security forces.

The stated goal of the program is to establish a working defense force for the nations of Japan and Korea, increase the home rule among the Japanese/Ryukyuan/Korean people, and establish early friendship and cooperation between the American and Japanese, Korean, & Ryukyuan people in defense endeavors. All three militaries are subordinate to the ultimate authority of the president and their respective occupation governments, but are not technically part of the United States' military.

The recruitment program's tactics are to include establishing recruitment centers in public areas, putting up advertisements to raise public awareness, and holding lectures in education centers, as well as sponsoring public works to increase positive public perception of the new military groups. Some Imperial Japanese military production centers have been re-opened to produce equipment for the new JAF, RIAF, and KAF.

The US government issued a statement noting it's commitment to the furthering of the Autonomy of the Korean, Japanese, and Ryukyuan people and that it was the belief of the Truman administration that the creation of individual militaries for these governments was an excellent step towards that goal.
