"Hard to tell." Peter admitted. "My office has run a few projections, but figuring out how many would qualify comes down to guesswork, it could be sweeping, or just a few. I hate that kind of uncertainty for budgeting, but I'm comforting myself by thinking that if the costs run high, it's because it's working as it should be, and we'll be much better off in the long run."

Today was going to be a big day.

The House and Senate had moved rather quickly through her most recent propositions, many of which were bi-partisan, some more controversial than others. The legislators were just as happy to get some of these agenda items through as she was, signaling that another year of cooperation was upon them, hopefully for the betterment of the state.

Her Chief of Staff brought the items at hand, many of which they had crafted together to begin with, and took a seat beside her as she started to leaf through.

"Maine-Israeli Affirmation and BDS Eliminations Act of 2017"
Summary: "Targets the Anti-Semitic International Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement and any furtherance of this movement in the state of Maine, hereby condemns the movement in its entirety and forbids in totality the State Government of Maine from contracting with organizations which engage in the BDS movement."

Patton did not hesitate, signing the bill into law happily.

"Protect Maine's Coastal Livelihoods Act" (PMCLA)
Summary: "Encourages companies operating on Maine's coast to be mindful of the local environment and its economic importance. Re-appropriates 8% of funds garnered from State corporate income tax to the subsidization and maintenance of Maine's coastal facilities; Creates 650+ Permanent jobs. Officially recognizes the role climate change has on the economy of Maine and pledges further action regarding climate change in the future.

Patton signed the bill. Though it had gone through a lot of tweaking when it came to the specifics, she was glad it was finally here.

"Maine Alternate Energy Investment Act" (MEA)
Summary: "Increases the Corporate Tax rate of Maine by .225%. Revenue garnered from the increase is to be invested in expanding alternative energy sources within Maine's borders. Facilitates a growth of alternative energy production. Focus will primarily be on the expansion of production capabilities of existing facilities; Hydroelectric Grid and Wind Turbines. Commits Maine to combating climate change and reaffirms the state's commitment to a clean and safe transition away from non-renewable energy sources. Estimated 135+ permanent jobs.

Patton signed the bill with relief. There had been some unexpected opposition on this, some heavy hitting Republicans were against the corporate tax increase, and had pressured other members of the caucus, but the final bill ended up getting through, for better or worse.

"Second Amendment Affirmation Act of 2017"
Summary: Enacts Universal Reciprocity for Concealed Carry Permits; Any lawfully issued permit in any of the 50 US States is acknowledged by Maine as valid. Increases magazine size allowance for Semi-Auto rifles used in hunting. Reaffirms Maine's Commitment to the second amendment and enshrines Maine's gun laws as the best in the nation.

This was the compromise for the minimum wage and the upcoming budget yield for classroms, not a bad one. Especially given she was planning similar legislation herself. Not big enough to ruffle feathers, not small enough so as to be worthless as a playing card, clearly. She signed it.

"Common Sense Wages Act of 2017"
Summary: Alters currently scheduled annual minimum wage increase by an additional 25 cents per year.

This was going to be helpful in a number of ways. The state's progressives were excited, though they wanted 15, and the party base was pleased as well. Not to mention all the people who are going to have extra money in their pockets over the next couple of years. She signed it happily.

Ever since his somewhat upsetting confirmation by the United States Senate, Emmitt Serrano had been assembling capable staff, a close team of experts, and a vast array of statistics and data to determine where the Department was going to head under his leadership. Quickly, they had settled on three main priorities: Helping the President formulate an Infrastructure package that stresses the need to repair existing roads and bridges and servicing underserved communities, Examining the role of autonomous vehicles in an ever-changing world and working to issue guidance on their safe development, and reaching out to pursue additional private-public relationships that could save the Federal Government money while furthering an agenda consistent with a balanced budget. He'd been up to his neck in work for a couple of weeks now, just trying to get everything sorted out so he'd have something to present to the President. Structural progress had been made on all three fronts, but none were close to implementation, or even presentation.

It was days like today, surrounded by lobbyists, policy wonks, his own personal staff, that he felt a bit like he was being suffocated by everything. It was definitely doable, and he liked the people, but it had been lots of long nights and more than a couple photo ops, and he wasn't always thrilled with it.

One of the women to the left of him, a redhead whose name he still hadn't gotten down quite yet given the sheer number of men and women he saw daily, was saying something about electric cars and the development of more efficient charging when one of his interns ran in, out of breath.

"Mr. Secretary, your wife is coming to see you." said the young man, visibly exhausted.

"Christ Jackson, did you take the stairs?" the Secretary said with a bit of humor in his voice, drawing some laughter out of the room.

"She says its urgent. She wants the room." he continued on, still trying to catch his breath from charging up however many flights of stairs.

"Did you tell her that I'm in the middle of a -"

"She WANTS the room Sir." he said, with the emphasis on the word 'wants' being enough for the others in the room to all glance at the Secretary in anticipation.

"I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen, 10 minute break." he said apologetically, with the room's occupants nodding in acceptance or grumbling a little, depending on who exactly they worked for. It wasn't a second before the last one left that Dr. Yang came through the door, a look visible on her face that he had only seen on their wedding day.

"I'm pregnant Emmitt," she said, with uncharacteristic girl-like wonder shining through her voice. "I'm pregnant."

Frozen in shock and complete surprise, he began stumbling for words.

"I-I didn't think- are you- the doctors said..." he muttered out, his breath gone.

"I know, I know. But apparently, we're in the minority. I couldn't believe it, I set an appointment with Dr. Mendelssohn just to make sure, but I already am." she said, tears filling her eyes as she moved across the room and embraced him. "I'm so happy Emmitt. I love you so much."

"I- I love you too." he responded, starting to tear up himself. He had convinced himself that this was a part of life that he would never be able to experience, but now, everything had changed. He briefly allowed a negative thought to cross his mind before feeling disgusted that he had even considered it a possibility.

Nothing was going to ruin this moment.

We have seen on one side a candidate with harsh rhetoric and claims that do not help the peace process, and on the other a sitting Democratic governor promoting and signing legislation that even Peter Amaras admitted was far to his right.

Neither is acceptable. We must take a middle path, upholding the dignity of both peoples and always working towards peace. A right of Israel to exist must not allow for violations of human rights and international law against the Palestinians, and violence must be condemned on all sides.
