Aubrey steepled her fingers and adjusted herself in the seat, putting aside, at least for the moment, the more relaxed, partially forced, form she had taken through the evening to a more professional one, thinking over what was said, reflecting on the information, but also on what she knew of Cal's takes on these sorts of things, what he might be thinking-and what might be best for him regardless of his opinion.

"Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not sure where the offer is. You're asking us to go on the air with you when we go on the air, is that right?"

Kristina took a deep breath and spoke, hoping to come across as non-schemey as possible.

“Basically, we want with the Reeds what Fox had with the Shrubs. You can feel free to take interviews offered to you from anyone, but if you or Cal or anyone in the administration is actively seeking out press opportunities, you call us first. In return, we promise to provide purely fair coverage of you. No impeachment rumors, no gossip column BS, no speculation on his mental health, or your marriage, or the internal workings of the administration. We will still report fairly if anything substantive comes out, but even our evening hosts won’t feed rumors about the Reeds.”

“We already have a growing east coast presence online. If we hit all our goals, by summer 2019 we will have a different daytime regional broadcast for east and west of the Mississippi. But before that ever happens, our evening programming will have three hosts like the big players, myself and one from the Midwest and one from the east coast. Actually, we already have one of them on contract, the other is going into negotiations in a couple days.”

“For a brand new station, those are lofty goals, but we have the people to create that. As you can see, we’re not afraid to take big risks, bring in big names, and it’s working.”

Guys. I'm checking twitter feeds from the so-called National March For Equality. How do you fuck up something that's supposed to be peaceful?

“Well thanks,” said Carter, trying not to show any signs of happiness even though there was something that felt very good about establishing this lost connection.

“Yes, she’ll be on her own show if she signs,” said Kristina. “She’s a mixed bag, She’s got a lot more fans than most hires we could have, but she can also be a liability and we recognize it. But controversy fuels views, and our programming is reputable enough, especially with the high profile guests we earn, that it makes up for any losses there. And our other host is a progressive Democrat leaning independent who has a great online following. Basically, we are trying to appeal to all demographics rather than pushing one agenda, to reach the most people possible.”

“There’s a couple other angles here to consider: you always will get a fair shake here. Some will try to make you look bad, we won’t. Also, if you agree to this, you have one less media source fueling the rumors. With more presidents in a short period of time anymore, you want the Reed administration to look stable, and we won’t fuel any rumors that go otherwise.”

“No, we aren’t the type to blackmail, but I wouldn’t issue any orders to Hobbes or Pickett to hold back,” said Chase, “but Aubrey, if you want to associate with any station, it’s us. Fox has internal scandals, CNN and MSNBC are too leftist to be associated with, and TNS is in the same boat as us but without a plan to expand westward as far as we’re aware of.”

"And their own problems." Aubrey murmed, recalling the Nolan interview, before chiding herself for slipping. She returned to form.

"It's a possibility. Fox has their internal scandals, WNN looks like it will have whatever issues Hobbes brings, and then they're the ones with the bigger network, bigger reputation, and bigger reach. I don't need to be coy about things, those are all major. People turn in to Moynihan every night, that's the network that's on in every bar. Maybe WNN can become that-I don't know. If it can, it looks like it's going to be a process, and not a leap."

"But I'm not slamming any doors, and it's an offer that's worth considering. You've been good to me, and you at least deserve a shot. There's nothing I can promise but putting in a good word with Cal." She shrugged. "We'll have to see where it goes from there."

It took several minutes, but Rossi eventually returned from her briefly self-imposed exile, hair re-straightened in front of the mirror there, but face bearing the marks on close examination beyond what a touch-up could fix. She slid into the chair, and slid that chair under the table, glancing down on her food, not touching it yet, making her return in silence, and apparently unwilling to be the first to break it.

“Hey that’s all we can ask for, that you consider it,” said Chase, glancing at the others at the table. “Just remember, we might be a more unknown entity, but we’re more accepting of change. We have the best online news service in America, and we pride ourselves on avoiding the ‘infotainment’ and ‘clickbait’ trend.”

She then notices the waitress with the food and remarks, “wow, that looks good.”

Aubrey took a look herself at the food, the display putting out some mixed signals between the potentially delectable and the still-unfamiliar, but mostly leaning towards the former. As the waiter put down the items, she mulled over Kristina's last sentence, but didn't think it proper to raise a question in front of him, or in taking the food, and filed it away to ask once the meal had begun.

Josh stifles a chuckle, and then turns to Aubrey.

“Well, you see, Kristina has the board wrapped around her finger. This was her idea about a month ago, and they gave us approval to seek it.”

Kristina smirks and cuts him off, “I wouldn’t say that, though they trust my decision making more than most old men trust 31-year-old women to run things. They did give me approval on this though, as Josh said.”

“As far as change goes, this isn’t really the kind of thing we can sign a contract for. This has to be a bit more...under the table. But here’s the deal: we need the Reeds. Probably more than you need us. So really, you have the leverage here. We would be foolish to change an agreement with the President, there would be so many direct and indirect consequences.”
