"We should be able to put the NRSC on that. But that is something that maybe needs some discussion itself. We need to make sure we have solid leadership in there but we are lacking in candidates." María Antonieta answers.

Part II
The Chase Report
With Special Guest First Lady Aubrey Reed

Image

Chase: “Welcome back to the Chase Report, I’m Kristina Chase. We have breaking news from the White House tonight, as President Reed has just released minutes ago a series of executive orders turning back Winston administration protections for transgender government employees and ending the Winstoncare contraception mandate, among other things. We have the great fortune of having First Lady Aubrey Reed in studio as these orders are announced. Mrs. First Lady, how do you feel about your husband’s choice to make such sweeping executive action?”

Aubrey, expecting more direct, specific questions, froze for a moment, mentally rolling through options, then doing her best to recover.

"I can't speak completely about all of them. One of them repealed another executive order that I'm not familiar with. But from what I do know, these seem like good changes to make."

Chase: “Are these things that have always been a part of his agenda?”

Reed: "Being pro-life has always been central, protecting religious liberty, cutting bureaucracy, these are things Cal ran on, and I think he is delivering."

Chase: “What about on the one requiring government documents to say BC rather than BCE in reference to dates? Doesn’t that seem like a bit of a First Amendment issue?”

Reed: "I don't think so. I mean, can you, or anyone, tell me what this "Common Era" is, and why it just so happens to start the exact same date that we use for Christ's birth? All that Common Era whatever is is the same system with a different name, and it's pretty much just dishonest about where it's coming from."

Chase: “But isn’t that the idea behind that whole thing? To continue our current calendar system without specifically honoring the main figure of one religion? Kinda a separation of church and state thing?”

Reed: "Well, think about it this way: if this whole "Common Era" of human history starts because of Jesus being born, then this new calendar is honoring that massively, dividing all of history by His birth. It's supposed to be trying to get away from religion, but it backfires if you think about it."

Chase: “I guess that’s one way to think about it. We will see how the people respond. Now, every First Lady has their key policy they want to work on? We’ve seen past First Ladies speak out against drugs, childhood obesity, illiteracy, and much more. What is going to be your policy focus as First Lady?”

Reed: "If I could just comment on that key policy idea with First Ladies, I definitely understand that this is a "position" that has a lot of traditions around it, and that's one of them, that the wife takes one of these issues that's sort of off to the side of politics, and she works on that while her husband runs the country. That's not really a bad tradition, but I don't really want to lock myself in a box, say I want to work on one thing, and then never be able to work on anything else. I'm, and we are still working on implementation, how these programs are going to be run, and all the details, but if it's possible, I plan to work on more than one thing as First Lady."

She shifts, as she shifts to the next part of the answer.

"I talked already about making gun safety part of what I'm looking to do, and that got a lot of criticism, which wasn't really that unexpected, but it's something that a lot of people think politically on. I'm still going to do that, it's not going off of the agenda, but like I said, I want to address other issues as well. That runs into another tradition, that you shouldn't do something that another First Lady has done before, but I'm not the biggest fan of that either. I think it makes it so that if you do see progress, that fades away once they leave office, and that's not anything good. So, obesity, is the other part, and I know that's something that Mrs. Winston worked on, childhood obesity especially, but I want to expand that, go after it on a much bigger scale."

"Obesity is just growing at a terrible rate. We have people estimating that in fifteen years, over half of the entire country will be obese. Even today, thirty percent, a third of the country, is actually at a "normal" weight, with the rest either overweight or obese, or the very small percentage that are underweight. The whole country is blowing up like a balloon, and so we're seeing more health problems, more work problems, decreased fertility rates, and all of this is predicted that it might cost as much as over five trillion dollars over the next ten years. That's a number that I can't even wrap my head around it's so big, it's something that the math just has to be wrong on, but these are the predictions that are being made."

"And what's really frustrating about this, but something that should give us hope, too, is that obesity is the simplest thing in the world to solve. For something like drugs, you have addiction, you have criminals, you have law enforcement and medical issues, for illiteracy you have kids with special needs, you have licensing teachers and different standards, different languages, there's so many factors, but for obesity, losing weight for ninety nine percent of these people is just less calories in than calories out. It's a one step solution, but it's not happening, and we need to make it happen."

"In fifty states, only five of them make it so that all their schoolkids can have recess, just five! You start them off sitting all day, and they'll keep on doing that through their life. One in five adults get enough aerobic and muscle strengthening exercise, and almost half don't have enough physical activity for any significant health benefits, and half of those are basically sedentary, a quarter of people."

"This isn't something that we need a thousand page bill to fix, it's something that anyone and everyone, or ninety nine percent of people, can fix just by eating less, or just getting up and moving! What the hard part is is making that happen, and I want to see that happen from the top down."

"And the bottom up."
Aubrey finished the thought.

Chase: "Wow...that's a lot to take in at once. To condense it all, you want to keep your options open and focus mainly on gun safety and obesity. Is that correct?"

Reed: "That's it in a nut."

Chase: “What about things like bans on large sodas? Are those within the realm of consideration as you fight obesity?”

Reed: "That's not something that's going to do anything. If all you do is keep people from buying big sodas, they'll just buy two medium ones, and drink just as much. At best, you inconvenience them. Dealing with obesity is about willpower more than anything. Any healthy person can buy as big a soda as they want, they just don't because they care about their bodies, or they'll do the exercise to pay it off. I'm going to be looking at different ways to make things easier, provide encouragement, incentives or consequences, but what it gets down to is that adults need to act like adults."

"For kids, it can be different, especially because they might not have the same opportunities, and their choices are more limited. Every kid needs to have recess and some kind of athletics class, physical education, however it's structured. You can't put them in a chair all day at school and expect anything but what we're getting. But a school could be a place where something like what you're talking about would work better. A lot of American schools have vending machines in them packed with junk food, and we don't need to have those things in schools, especially primaries."

Chase (clearly joking): “So I take it we won’t see mandatory physical education for adults any time soon?”

Reed: She smiled back. "Hey, that's not the worst idea."

Chase: “But now, in all seriousness, how do you balance that? Rewarding and incentivizing healthy choices while still promoting individual freedom and responsibility?”

Reed: "That's what we're hoping to figure out. Everything's still in the planning stages, but one idea is to use taxes as sort of encouragement/discouragement kind of tool. You know, with life insurance, they'll give you discounts and benefits if you work out, eat healthy, that sort of thing, but if you're out of shape, it costs more. It's not a bad model to try to use."

Chase: “I like the idea, but what about people genetically born with a tendency towards obesity. If life insurance costs more, they won’t get it. And many of the obese are poor. America is the only country in the world where the poor are fatter than the rich, and that’s because we have an abundance of unhealthy but cheap food.”

Reed: "There's always a few exceptions, rare conditions and those kinds of things that there'd obviously be exceptions for in a tax plan. For ninety nine percent of people though, obesity really just comes down to calories in, and calories out. Almost everyone has the chance to exercise and make those decisions, and while it's easy to just buy chips, there are plenty of foods that are healthy and cheap. Eggs, for example."

Chase toyed in her head with what joke to make. Finally, she said, “Is that a plug for the chicken industry? I have a pretty good cake recipe that calls for eggs. But I’m a firm believer that the chicken came first.” Realizing how awkward this sequence of sentences was, she paused, and then smiled while changing the subject, “Anyways, I definitely see where you are coming from. Now, you and I have something in common...we’re both from English speaking countries that were formerly part of the British Commonwealth and don’t necessarily have the background of the American Revolution and all of that. Tell me, how was the transition from Canada to the US? Especially going from living in Canada to in a few short years being married to the leader of the US?”

Reed: "Now that's a hard question." She smiled good-naturedly, and adjusted herself on the seat, keeping Chase's suggestions in mind. "Some of the part that makes it harder is that for me, it wasn't just going from Canada to the United States, but it also had a lot of going rural to urban, moving into Denver, and then ending up in Baltimore."

She thinks for a few moments. "It wasn't a simple move from one place to another, either. Through all of my life, I've always been moving somewhere. My parents were military and police, so my childhood had plenty of moves, and then when I joined the GRC myself, there were always different postings, one province to another. Once I came to the United States, you had the move between the cities, Denver, to Baltimore, to Washington, but even when we were just in Denver, I would travel with the team most of the time, and that brought you everywhere, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, so many different places."

"I think that you can't say that there's one Canada, or one America. I know you talk a lot about "Red states" and Blue states", and maybe that is part of it, but there's more to it than that." Another smile. "But I don't think I'm really the one qualified to be able to dig into that in-depth."

"Marrying, I suppose I'm very qualified to talk about that. I didn't marry the leader of the U.S., of course, I married a baseball player. I never expected then that I'd be here, now." She smirked. "Well, it's maybe not here that I'm surprised at. There always was paparazzi and news crews everywhere, and I always hated that. The White House, though, now that really was out of the blue."

Chase: “So you were used to change, but maybe some of the changes were more unexpected. Tell me, what was it like the moment Calvin told you he wanted to run for President?”

Reed: Aubrey rubbed her hand through her hair, tilting her head back in a motion she hoped seemed natural, and was at least slightly so, an expression of ironic amusement.

"It's so funny, because at the time, it was just such an unimportant thing, from my side of things. I had a team training session that I had to fly off to, prepping for Rio, and I was really keyed-in on that. Cal's announcement, if you remember, he made it in one of those American Dream fundraisers, and we'd done so many of them before, that it just seemed like another one. I guess when you get into one of those mindsets that everything is just surface-level, nothing goes farther than that, but it didn't sink in at the time at all."

Chase: “So you may have been the one person out there not shocked to hear that he was going to run?”

Reed: She laughs. "Well, I am shocked in retrospect, I was just too mentally occupied at the time for it to be a stunner."

Chase: “Well Aubrey, it has been such a pleasure. I’m grateful to have been able to have you stop by.”

Reed: "It was great to be here." Aubrey relied, adding a touch of enthusiasm to the words.

Chase: “Come back any time. Best of luck to you.” The camera goes single-shot on Kristina, who finishes up the segment. “That’s all we have time for here today, and wow, what a great insight into the life of our First Lady. Tune in again tomorrow night at 8:00 MST, I’ll be out of town for the day but the great Katherine Hobbes will be here to interview Alaskan Attorney General and congressional candidate James Miles Jr.” The theme music plays and the show fades to commercial.

Aubrey waited a span of several long seconds after Chase had delivered her conclusion, making certain that they were off the air before speaking again.

"So, was that an improvement, or just more of the same?"

"Well, you're the first one to ever say that about me." Aubrey replied, a bit of self-deprecating humor in the tone, though inwardly, she was, surprising to herself again, pleased at the praise.

"I don't wanna come across as schmoozy, but I would like to take you to a nice dinner with myself and my producer and a few others to express my gratitude for having you on here. We're the number 5 cable TV network in the country, so we have a lot of growing to do, and you agreeing to come on to our channel means the world to myself and my team. We believe in healthy professional relationships with those who we feature on our programming, and you can consider this a gesture towards that. Obviously, if you have any qualms about a commentator like myself being seen publicly with yourself based on issues of biases, etc. I totally understand. But the offer is open, as we would really like to have you around as much as you're comfortable with and possibly have a bit of the inside lane on news coming out of the White House," Kristina noted her own frankness in her statement and instantly regretted saying that last part a little bit.

"Sure." Aubrey answered the lengthy proposal with a simple reply. It didn't take a great deal of thinking back to recognize that the last time she had been out to a dinner with anyone without Cal was before the two of them were married. Musing geographically rather than temporally, this would, in fact, be the first time she had done anything like this in the United States.

Not that she was particularly grieved about the gap. She tended, more often than not, to think of them as wastes of time at best, and actively stressful and dangerous at worst. Now, though, whether because of what had happened in Arabia, or something else, she found she liked the idea, and with a rare evening actually "out", she'd take the chance.

Something tingled into her mind, though, an annoying little worm, and it prompted a question.

"There aren't any campaign finance laws this would violate, are there? I'm not the best knowing in that area."

"I just mean..." she started before abandoning it, deciding she would do too much damage trying to repair it. "Anyways. You said you'd want to swing by on the voicemail? Headed to Denver? Why is that?"

Jimmy paused, and then spoke. “Come on Pen, you know I didn’t mean it like that,” he said. Maybe this was enough to snap his sarcastic, joking attitude. He had one chance at this, and he didn’t want to blow it. Even though he did feel like she had probably changed more than he did, and that he was stuck as a kid’s mentality in a fifty year old man, he still didn’t mean it in exactly the way she ways saying. Like everything surrounding this situation, it was unexplainable. “I mean, I still became plenty adult. You should see the house I live in, and the legal stuff I do. I’m the state’s attorney general. But I get what you’re saying...I just, I know I’m gonna be down to the lower states next week, and I took the whole week off. I was going to just sightsee, maybe visit some old friends, but I thought about you and I really got the urge to see you. It’s just..everything was so abrupt when I left back in school. And I never got any chance to talk to you again.”

Feeling a bit bad, she decided to try and roll with it without addressing what he took issue with.

"Yes, it was abrupt. How about this, my personal number is (213)-446-1861. Write that down somewhere so you don't have to go through my office again." She said through the returning smile.

She paused a moment before continuing.

"You don't have to be so defensive James, I'm sure you're quite the professional." she teased.

Governor Bill Denver (P-CO)

It was a couple of hours before he was slated to give his speech at the March for Equality, and the Governor of Colorado had some time to kill. He would have marched himself, but some recent news from the doctor had killed that idea before it could come to fruition. Thus, he sat in a limousine, carefully parked in front of one of his favorite spots in the nation's capital as he pulled out his cell phone. The Vice President had made him an offer, and frankly, it was one he was going to take advantage of. Kyle was smart, but he had been misapplying himself for a while now. Waving the Flores banner was one thing, but God only knew when he'd don the black everything and embrace nihilism and total anarchy in line with the natural progression. While his youngest had initially been hostile to the idea, he came around one his dad had talked some sense into him and convinced him that whatever his political philosophy, this was a good starting point for anything in the future. Kyle sat across from him now, fiddling with his phone as usual as his father dialed the Vice President's office number and listened to it ring.

María Antonieta ponders for a few moments. "Maybe. I don't know how things are going to play out but there is one thing that might matter for the party. I will get a hold of you if something happens there but right now it is not really anything."

"Then I'm in." Aubrey affirmed. Then, half-joking, half-serious, made an addendum. "As long as it's not Mexican food. I don't do well with spice."

“What about sushi?”, asked a strange voice, as a short yet attractive, clean-cut man who oozed metrosexuality came out of the studio control room and walked over to the two women. He was barely taller than Kristina, had short fauxhawk style hair, and looked to spend plenty of time in the gym. “Hello Mrs, First Lady, I’m Joshua Roth, evening content producer for WNN. Part of my job is securing talent for our broadcasts, both in the form of show personalities and interview subjects. I think you made quite the impression tonight, and I’ll be joining yourself and Ms. Chase for dinner.” He said this in a crisp, matter-of-factly tone that exuded a professional, platonic confidence toward the two women.

"Sure." Aubrey agreed a second time, perkily enough. "Saves the time of waiting for them to cook it." she added, with some internal unease at the significantly more open, gregarious, humorous affect she was doing her best to slip into, but an amount far less than would have been standard, as she uncharacteristically sought to go with the flow of the broader moment. "But are you sure that isn't cannibalism, win that fin you've got?" She questioned, joke coming off slightly awkwardly as she gestured to his hair, but the delivery going a good tick better than typical.

“Sorry about that there...you know what I’m like,” remarked James, not even really sure what he meant by it. “I tell you what, I’ll come to you. After my interview I’ll rent a car and visit if that’s okay. I have the whole week, but I can visit you however short or long you would like. If that’s okay with you of course. Can you send me a text to my phone so I can keep your number?”

“What?” asked the man, oblivious to the reason behind the joke. Kristina, who was standing next to him nudged him and muttered, “the hair, you idiot.” Josh, confidence a little more easily broken than one would have thought, touched the gelled spikes on his head. “What? My stylist said she likes it,” he said in a tone that didn’t quite appear to be a complete joke. “Was this the set stylist for Jersey Shore...or maybe Finding Nemo?” asked Kristina, joking to lighten the mood. A couple of young interns, one male and one female walked by. Kristina gestures to them and said, “you two...wanna get some sushi with us and the First Lady?” The two of them came over and greated Aubrey in a much less confident way than their superiors had. “Okay, let’s go,” said Kristina. She then turned to Aubrey, “how does this work? Does the Secret Service have a car for you or do you ride with us and they follow?”

Somewhat embarrassed by her own uncertainty on the procedure, not having been through this sort of situation before, Aubrey made her best guess with confidence.

"They'll probably want to take a quick look at the car beforehand, but they'll follow along. Someone should tell then where we're going before we start, they'll check the place out, but it'd just be me in the car with you guys. But hey, if you try something, I'll just shoot you myself, right?"

That one didn't come off as well, the tone lacking enough of the inflection to make it known that it was a joke, leaving it in an uncertain limbo.

The other three looked at Aubrey a little dumbfounded, but Kristina, who herself was a master of accidentally confusing people with tone and timing, smiled and laughed. “Not if I do first,” she remarked flatly, as she led the 5 of them to a white Escalade out of the back door of the building. “Call your people really quick,” Kristina says to Aubrey. “Josh, you’re driving,” she then says, handing the keys to him.

Aubrey raised an eyebrow, and almost fired back a friendly retort, before belatedly realizing by the expressions of the others the issue of her initial statement, and electing to remain silent.

Fortunately for convenience's sake, though hardly unexpected, there was a black-suited man already surveying the exit as the group sallied forth, and after after a brief discussion with the First Lady, and a slightly less brief overlook of the vehicle, they were fully prepped to move out to dinner.

Local Union 77, branch of LiUNA

The large banner in the room read:
LiUNA endorses Joh Stansky!
Feel the Power - Give Joh a Go!

After the President of the LiUNA Eastern Region branch concluded his speech, remarking about the need for increased worker's right's and his support for Stansky, the man himself took to the stage. He received an enormous round of applause as he entered the stage, people in the crowd were chanting 'Joh! Joh! Joh'. This was his stomping ground, and his strongest voting base. He waited for the cheering to end before he started his speech.

Thank you for inviting me here, thank you for having me, and, of course, thank you for endorsing me. Your support for me and my team is irreplaceable, and just as how I was elected Mayor of Trenton, I will break barriers in becoming the Governor of New Jersey. I can always count on the working people of Trenton, the LiUNA, and the state of New Jersey to be by my side during these times. The campaign is nowhere near over, yet the race has begun. My gratitude towards this endorsement is un-fathomable, and the sponsoring of my campaign means incredible amounts to the gubernatorial race. As you may know, we are up against opponents who disregard the population of the state and the working class of this state by taking corporate donations. Whenever I hear them speak, all I know is that they were most likely paid to say that. Well, when you vote for Joh Stansky, this is all you get. No strings attached, no secret back-room deals, just plain old justice to the elderly, working people, students and children.

The crowd cheered.
When I speak about the candidates with the major corporations in their pockets, I'm talking about Schlang, Hotchkiss, and the entire Progressive Party. I'm not going to let our state have a choice from either; Schlang the Republican in disguise, or Hotchkiss, a card-holding member of the Republican Party. I'll give this to her; she's honest. At least she doesn't pretend she isn't a Republican. The Progressive Party at this stage, is all but bought-out. Wal-Mart, the biggest fraudster business in the game is the direct campaign contributor to Ellen Walton and her cronies. She relies of identity politics to remain afloat, attempting to keep their dirty secrets undercover. The Progressive Party candidate for New Jersey hasn't even reared her head, except for making comments on the twitter-sphere. Where is she gone? If she wants to truly represent the state of New Jersey, she needs to be getting her hands dirty! The exact same goes for Governor Hotchkiss. Once we win the primary, people, we are going to put them both on their elitist asses.

The crowd blew up in cheer, they particularly liked a decent amount of profanity. Joh remembered this.

I'm sure you're all aware that I was once the General-Secretary of the branch here in New Jersey. We really all are comrades in the on-going struggle for equality and fair wages, a fight still worth fighting in America. In my time, I lead numerous strikes, rallies, all the sort. I can proudly say that this level of defiance has never ended since. I applaud the leadership here, and your persistent battle for proper recognition. It has always been my campaigns main policy to protect the working people of New Jersey. The main driver of dwindling union memberships are the fact that our incompetent leaders are letting our business fly away! It's also flying away because there are not strong enough union power to tell them to stay here! It's a never-ending circle of unemployment. What I'm going to do is, I'm going to get a hammer and smash it up! No manufacturing or other employer will leave New Jersey under my watch. No worker will be underpaid under my watch. The exploitation of worker's, particularly migrants, will end. Bosses who mistreat their employees will find themselves in a prison cell. Corporate crime, in most cases, is more vile and disgusting than common crime. Yet they get away with it, because our government is bought!

Many unionists burst out, yelling 'Give Joh a Go!'

That brings me to my next reform agenda point. Banning all corporate donation. I will bring that action in within the first couple of weeks, if not days. We've never had a truly worker-orientated candidate before, that's because big business has too much power. They can buy our political system out. From head to toe. Due to their influence in this election, they can deploy attack ads and flood the race with sleazy money. I will not have a bar of that. Anyway, I better wrap this up, I know you all have families to go back to tonight. We have a political revolution ahead of us, and it don't see it ending anytime soon. Thank you LiUNA, thank you Trenton!
