The informal caught Rossi off-guard, in a meeting that already was doing so, and she took a long draught of water to buy herself time to steady herself in the uncertain situation. Kiser certainly wasted no time in getting to his point, and when that point was as suddenly personal as it was, intended as such or not, it had her still searching off-kilter neurons for the words after the lengthy gulp was completed.

"It's something.....it's not......this......not new. Not just Congress where....well.....I mean, you see...."

Taking a small breath he had a quick look of concern before saying "So you are just nervous in general? I want to help you overcome that Anna. You can make a great politician and the only thing possibly holding you back is this."

Kiser made a mental note that she got better when angry. Taking a moment he said calmly "It's not sudden. I have been wanting to talk to you for a long time but if I am honest I was a bit nervous and I wanted to make sure I wasn't being insensitive."

Kiser leaned back as he said “He’s my uncle. He’s also currently the governor of Texas. And shares my name but that’s a whole other story. He’s a Psychology major. Owns one of the biggest chain clinics in Texas. And he’s probably not seeking reelection as Governor so he has spare time on his hands.”

James Miles Jr.’s House
2:30 AM

Jimmy tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.

This happened a lot. No matter what drugs he took, women he met, things he bought, cases he won, Jimmy would sometimes just not be able to sleep. Maybe it was chronic insomnia, maybe he just had’t found what he was looking for yet.

It didn’t help that he’d been three days clean. Well…three days clean from the cocaine at least.

He had to stop. It cost a lot of money. He needed all the money he could get to keep his campaign alive. It wasn’t like he was earning much support elsewhere.

It was hard, and the cravings would rock his whole body. He was overcompensating for it elsewhere, pouring himself into his working and drinking an unhealthy amount of coffee to make up for the missing stimulant. Maybe that’s why I’m not sleeping…I did drink a whole pot of coffee at 10:00 PM…

He laid there for awhile. What was it that he was looking for?

The home was cavernous, like a tomb or an empty gymnasium. His bedroom was bigger than most people’s apartments. But it was as empty as he was. He didn’t feel too comfortable with the place where he was laying. Maybe it was the big empty bed. He didn’t have a clue honestly.

It was as empty as he felt.

This gut-wrenching feeling overtook him to the point that he had to get up and move. He walked down the hallway lined with expensive artwork to his living room. He sat down for a second on the couch. What am I gonna do? he thought. He stood back up and went down the hall to a closet. Or rather, a bedroom that he used as storage for all of his old things. All of the things that wouldn’t look good inside such a sleek, modern home.

He just was looking for the box closest to the door. He needed something to calm him down. He threw out all the cocaine a couple days back, and honestly that wouldn’t help him right now anyway. He had to get to sleep somehow. He reached into the box and pulled out a sleek black container with a sticker on it that said “Blackberry Kush”. Next to it was a small water pipe and a lighter.

As Jimmy got up to leave, he noticed something. One of the boxes in the back of the room had tipped over, causing its contents to spill on the ground. Dammit…I gotta pick that up… he thought to himself. He set down the marijuana paraphernalia and tripped over boxes and bags until he reached the spilled box. He began to gather its contents. His high school diploma. A beginner guitar lesson book. Some old tapes of a short-lived college radio show. And that’s when he picked it up. An old yearbook, from his time at Stanford. He flipped through the pages. Lots of old memories were shown, and plenty of signatures from old friends.

The last page of the yearbook had a note, which he re-read several times.

“Jimmy,
I can’t begin to describe all my feelings for you. You are wonderful, you are loved, and you are one of the most kind people I’ve ever met. Never lose yourself, and never forget me. I will miss you with all of my heart.”

The signature below was blurry, and he had a hard time making it out. He placed the box back in its place with all its contents returned except for the yearbook. He put the book under his arm and grabbed the items he had originally came for, and returned to the hallway.

He walked back to the living room and set the weed down on the table. Lighting it up, he took a large hit and then laid down on the couch. He didn’t understand it. Most of the people he went to school with had families by now. They had moved on from acting like they were in their early 20’s. But here he was, awake at 2:30 AM with a bong in his hand looking at his old yearbook. He just hadn’t moved on from that point, while everyone else had.

He opened up the yearbook again, and laying on the couch, he began to look at the last page again. All of a sudden, all the memories came rushing back to him. The stupid decisions he had made that caused him to have to leave the author of that note so long ago. Maybe that was why he hadn’t moved on. It was all so abrupt.

He took another hit, and slowly drifted off to sleep. Luckily, he didn’t have work in the morning anyway.

When he woke up, the yearbook was still on his chest. He had the feeling that the author of that note would feel as lonely and empty as he did, though for completely different reasons.

He got online and found the correct phone number for her office. He dialed it on his cell phone, and it rang until the voicemail came up. Jimmy left a message.

“Hey. It’s your old friend Jimmy. I thought of you last night. I’ve thought of you a few times. My number is (687) 555-0920. Give me a call when you can. I’m flying down to Denver soon and I’d be down to make a detour to see you. Maybe we could hit up our old stomping grounds."

Wilson Twitter @TroyWilson
"The Democrats are some of the biggest hypocrites in America. Will soon codify his wonderful EO's in law. Big wins for God and guns. #ThankYouReed. Now, if only he would get rid of Dudley #RepealDudley."

Wilson re-watched the Ken Capital show on the plane. He wanted to have all the data on Marlowe before he confronted him. He also watched C-SPAN and sent that tweet after seeing the Democrat hypocrisy. Winston ran EO's left and right. Boy, it was hard to be a Senator. He saw more crap in six years of Washington than in his whole life, cleaning cow shit and horse shit from corrals. He still enjoyed the fight. He ran in 2010 on a message of "Stop the EPA".

He approached the secretary at Marlowe's office.

"Hello, I'm here to see Mr. Marlowe."

Blonde secretary answered the door. As she opened it, a whiff of tobacco came out of it. She returned in a while and said: "Senator, Congressman Marlowe is ready to meet you."

Wilson was led in a small, tidy office. Marlowe was at his desk, pouring "Southern Comfort" into two glasses filled with ice. As Wilson approached he came over to him and extended his hand: "Pleased to have you here, Senator!" He extended the glass towards him: "Help yourself with a drink, won't ya!"
