A black-suited man came up, stereotypical sunglasses not present in the early-morning darkness, and paused to address the Governor.

"My apologies, Sir, but we're taking every precaution under the present circumstances. If you'd spread your arms, please?"

The Governor steps out of the car, and spreading his arms informs the agent, “I am carrying a pistol in a concealed holster under my left arm, you can disarm me yourself or I can hand it to you, either is fine.”

Stephens reaches under his shirt, pulls out the weapon gently, and places the weapon in the agent’s hand. Then he asks, “so where’s Cal? And what does he know so far?”

The agent took the weapon, and gave the Governor a brief pat-down before nodding.

"The President is in the Beast, thirty yards up the road." The agent gestured, but the waning moon, near-new, provided little light to show the already black vehicle.

"He has received notice of the general details of the event, including the passing of his father. He believes that report to be incorrect. He has not been furthered briefed beyond that point."

“Okay, well if you don’t mind, I’m going to go speak to him now,” as Stephens departed toward the black vehicle. He awaits an agent or the President to further assist him.

As Stephens drew nearer to the car, a door on the far side of the vehicle opened outwards, and a figure emerged to walk briskly around the vehicle, coming to a stop in front of the armored car, crossing hands over her chest and giving the Governor a rather stern look, from what could be seen of the face in the dim light.

"What do you plan to say to him?" Aubrey asked.

“Aubrey...glad to see you. I’m here to further brief him on details, if he wants to hear them. If not, I’m here so he knows he’s got people who have his back here. I’m also here for the media, I distracted them earlier and held a press conference so maybe some of those idiots would leave before you two made it to town. I know you want to be surrounded by friends and family at this time, not politicians and reporters, so I promise to be quick.”

"It's appreciated." Aubrey's tone was flat, not particularly appreciative itself, but the words were spoken.

“Other than Howland Reed, I can’t name them off the top of my head. Officer Powell drove me here and he has access to the list. We made the decision to not release names to the public until tomorrow, to give the town some time,” said Stephens. While you couldn’t tell it by looking at him, he was trying to read Aubrey, who was always someone who he had a hard time figuring out.

Fatigue was clearly visible on the woman's face, emotional, perhaps, or simply from having been awake for over twenty-four hours consecutively and with over a thousand miles of transit in that time. A mixture could be most likely. Outside of that fatigue, the demeanor was a businesslike one, if absent the crispness of motion that would usually entail, more lethargic, with something behind her eyes, not quite discernible.

"You said you were here for the media?" she referred back to part of his earlier comment.

“Yeah, I knew they’d rush here. I was watching the rally on a local station when I noticed that Howland was in that crowd when the gunshots went off. When the shooting broke out, I had flew down here and came in with the National Guard.”

“You see, my dad died during my second term as governor. I know the media firestorm can be absolute hell when that stuff happens, and when you’re in a position of leadership and ‘sposed to be strong but you’re also ‘sposed to grieve...it’s really hard to do. And everything is even more tragic in this situation. So I’ve come to keep the media away from Cal, and to help in any way I’m needed. Cuz nobody should go through this alone. I’ve tried to give them all the interviews they want so they have footage and go back to wherever they came from before you two got here. And I’ve also tried to get the narrative to be about how hateful and evil Kramer and Noble were, so people focus on them and not gun stuff, y’know, cuz that’s gonna come up.”

"I don't think the Second Amendment is his biggest concern right now." Aubrey retorted, with some heat, before softening.

"But...thank you."

She stepped to the side, and gestured to the vehicle.

"Be gentle. Don't press. If he won't talk, don't make him." The words were given with the firmness of orders, but the voice cracked just enough to show the concern beneath them.

"Go ahead."

Doug nods and enters the vehicle, taking a seat opposite of Calvin. “Hello Mr. President,” says Stephens.

McGareth decides to be the peacemaker. "We can put the database in another bill later that Senator Lane and Senator Fowler do not have to sign onto if they do not want to and we can keep this bill smaller to make sure that everyone stays happy with it. Now we need to talk more about the specifics of background check changes. Senator Fowler said that he had some ideas. We know that we are going to make sure they apply to private sales like the Minority Leader said but what other changes are we making?"

Of course. My father made it up years and years ago. It goes like this:

There was a prince, Gabriel, the son of the king of a great land. Gabriel was the second eldest of the king's children, and thus second in line for the crown. The eldest, Nathaniel, would be their father's heir upon his death. However everybody knew Nathaniel to be incompetent, his leadership skills not that of a skilled commander. Gabriel urged his father to name himself as the true heir upon his death to the throne. His father, the king, however loved both his children equally and knew that keeping royal tradition must be upheld. Some weeks later, the king died and Nathaniel was named the king of the land. Gabriel, still wanting to take power was furious however did not display it in front of his brother. What did Gabriel do? His brother, unknowing of all his brother's opinions and intentions, trusted Gabriel and saw him as intelligent. Gabriel, amongst all his father's children, was seen as the outspoken one of the court and one who enjoyed literature in the arts of governance and history. Gabriel took advantage of Nathaniel's trust and became the head advisor to the crown. With his influence over the king, Nathaniel went to Gabriel for everything and trusted Gabriel's judgement above even his own!

Now, Senator Kramer, why do you believe I am telling you this parable?

Compromise, Senator Kramer. In the past I stated that the President is not fit for office, and personally I still agree with that statement. However he is not a bad guy and is, for the most part, open to civil discussion with views separate of his own. You can still have your campaign, and you should if this trend spirals down for America, but perhaps working with him on the side lines as well will achieve many of the goals that you so cherish.

Progressive Party HQ, Seattle, Washington

Today was the day! After seeing what happened during the election, and the current fiasco happening now, Lyla Beatrice was more determined than ever.

It's time! she thought to herself as she entered the building, introducing herself to the secretary and acknowledging the meeting with Ellon Walton, Mayor of Seattle and Progressive candidate in the election. She waited patiently in the seating room for her arrival.
