Carter smiled and looked him in the eyes before saying “Winslow hasn’t done anything. She’s been sick or whatever her excuse is. As for other senators, you and I both know the sway I still hold. That sway can help you. Or hurt you.” Taking a sip of his drink he continued saying “You act as if I’m betraying my core beliefs by saying I’ll help with Reed’s agenda. I agree with it for the most part and our differences aren’t major. It’s called compromising. Something I’m a fan of.”

"Compromising? I don't think you understand where you are right now in the political field. You are the defeated former majority leader, Carter. You are not a rising star or a powerbroker. You're the one who is here grovelling to me to regain the status you once had. It is not me grovelling to you for compromise. When you played the sychophant, I wasn't necessarily opposed. A sychophant would be preferrable to prideful fool."

Denisevich finished his second scotch.

"I can get you your old position back. Or something more than you have now, in the least. But there is no reason why I should do this if compromise is what you are offering. I could find plenty of loyal and competent senators to replace Winslow."
