Cory laughed. "That's great man, and it'll be all water under the bridge."

He took a sip of his drink.

"If I could hazard a guess." Cal opened. "I'd guess that it's probably the erratic schedule of the job, pop-ups and phone calls here and there, more than the raw hours pushing the strain. Or am I off-base?"

"If I remember how the newspapers put it, it was a "libertarian Republican vs. a Libertarian who used to be a Republican". We're pretty close policy-wise, which made it hard to criticize any of your ideas during the campaign.

So you've mentioned your political aspirations, where are you thinking your next political job will be?"

"That does make things harder," Reed admitted, leaning on the gun. "And it makes something I've always endorsed as a solution a little harder, but not impossible by any means."

Reed settled himself in.

"I think that, going through dating Aubrey, especially in the first few years, I'd come to a little realization about the way you spend time with each other. Neither one of us had much free time at all, and that, and a few other things could make things tricky. What I think I figured out was something that might have seemed backwards at first, but, spending time with each other when you can't put all your attention on it does more harm than good. They'll be frustrated by the lack of focus. You'll get irritated by trying to split time, and neither one of you will be happy if one of you ends up getting pulled out."

"What Aubrey and I ended up doing was finding ways for us to spend time together alongside work, make work a date, training, and that sort of thing. That's probably more of a situational thing for us, but for anybody, I'm a real believer that one thing of time spent together where the other person is the only thing you're focused on is worth a half-dozen halfways. Even if you can only do it once a week, every two, even, you get more of a relationship going from that to carry you through than in fits and spurts."

"I don't know if the two of you go to the same church, but I'd recommend it a highly as I can. Even if you don't see each other all week, keeping something like that it common every Sunday, and then doing something like I said, trying to stake out that afternoon as a time only for the two of you-I'd call it foundational."

"Not that that's all as easy to get done as it is to have said, but I'll do whatever I can to make it work for you two. You'll hold a lot of jobs in your life, but you'll only ever get one better half."
Male.

"I'm still looking for a few people to fill director positions. You hunt right? I still have a spot open for Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Director. We have a great department of commerce director slot open right now, if that's up your alley. God knows we need somebody who understands the free market in that spot. There's a few staffer positions open, but those probably aren't high-status enough for someone who just ran for governor, with the influence you have.

As far as the PAC goes, I support you in it but I don't know if I'd do that myself, at least not for awhile. I had Reed's back big-time during the election, but I have my doubts about him until he proves himself. I think he is capable as President and has a good head on his shoulders, but I can't say he is the "next Reagan" like some people say until he actually has some success in office. He has my support when he proves it, if you get what I'm saying."

Denisevich pondered what Reed said for a moment. Then he said softly, "I will take that into consideration."

Then he remarked, "Making work into a date, as you say, seems to be difficult when my work will be running the nerve center of the most powerful man on the planet."

Commerce, though, oh boy. My background is in public relations and media, and of course, branding! And I am a small business owner, obviously. But I take commerce as sort of a branding role in itself, right? I gotta sell Montana, make it attractive for businesses while also handling that free market stuff you mentioned. Really, man, I'd be a fish in water with either position!"

He finished his coke.

"Yeah yeah, I get that whole thing, but Cal is a great guy! As a fellow athlete and political noob, I admire him a lot!"

"Yeah, our offices can work out the details as far as when and where" said Roberts.

"I think that's going to be all for now." Yang responded, before deciding on something.

"Except, now that i've heard it said, Madam Secretary sounds nice." She smiled. "Wouldn't want to hold you up any longer, take care Mr. Roberts."

Cal nodded. "Like I said, it was a situational thing that worked out for us. I wouldn't call it a very workable strategy in this kind of context. It was the second bit, setting out exclusive time, that I really think is critical, however things are."

He sighed.

"I love her, but sometimes I think perhaps she and I just aren't mean't to work out."

"That's a nice elk, where'd you manage to snag it?", replied Stephens. He thought to himself that it was ironic that Cory defended Reed, considering Reed and Stephens's past secret deal that likely cost Cory the election. Instead of mentioning this, he simply said "Reed is a really good guy, has a lot of potential as President."

Stephens paused and looked up at the ceiling, then back at Cory.

"Well how about this, the offer is open for you to take either position. Both would be good opportunities for you to get your name out in our state, and if you desire, a good springboard towards one of the Senate or House seats in a few years. I trust your skills and understanding for both FWP and Commerce. Take your pick. Whatever you think is going to help your career the most."

Cal grinned slightly. "I have heard that there is a reason that your position is referred to as "Chief" of Staff. That being that we've got what's actually quite an impressive number of staff." He leaned forward. "Simon, you've been instrumental in helping make this transition work. I know that I'm going to be turning to you constantly as we push this administration forward. But, you're not alone in this. We've got a whole White House operating behind us-and I don't think I'm quite so incompetent that I'll drive this whole country into ruin if you spend an afternoon off with your wife-to-be."

Room 113, Dirksen Senate Office Building, Washington D.C.

A young, clean-cut white man, perhaps in his early twenties, greeted Prejean professionally, attired in a crisp black suit.

"Good morning, Senator Prejean. Senator Amaras is expecting you. He is in his office at present-shall I call to let him know you have arrived?"

Inside the office, while his underling greeted the Senator, Amaras had already set up a reasonable working space. The back room held a most excellent easy chair, but seats throughout the staff area and the remainder of the office space were simple, businesslike chairs and desks. Not particularly adorned, the space was nonetheless quite clean, with an ordered feel to it. The staff sat in desks set against each wall, opposite each other, on the path leading to the main room of the Senator himself. Amaras's own desk, white-topped and U-shaped, held three separate computers on it, one of which Amaras sat behind. File cabinets and occasional plants filled out the remainder of the office's largely grey space.

At the receieving area, however, the well-dressed young man awaited Prejean's response.

Roberts Campaign HQ
New Haven, CT

Carter Roberts was grinning ear to ear about his latest endorsement, he walked out into the main room, where his college age volunteers were sitting on tables and chairs near the phones.

Carter spoke in an upfliting tone, as he leaned against his crutch. "Hey everyone! I have good news. We have a big-name endorsement coming in. I can't say their name, because even though I trust all of you, there's no way I'll let it leak."

"Now is the time to pick our heads up, get on these phones, and get some donations! Let's get the Roberts train out of this station and into the Senate! Who's with me???"

The volunteers cheered, their spirits lifted by the good news.

"Okay, everybody, bring it in. Football huddle!" The volunteers crowded around him with their fists up in the air. Roberts began to shout, "who's gonna get the most votes!" The volunteers replied "WE ARE!". The cycle continues.
"Who's gonna bring in donations?" "WE ARE!" "Who's gonna win the primary?" "WE ARE!" "Who's gonna win the election?" "WE ARE!"
Then it reversed. The volunteers said "Who's gonna be our next Senator?" Roberts replied "I AM!"
Then everyone yelled in unison "1,2,3...TEAM ROBERTS!!!"

Everybody backed off from Carter a step or two. He began to speak in a more authoritative tone. "Remember guys, with your calls, it's not a no until they either hang up or say no 4 times. Mike and Tiffany, you two take the big donor list, Cory and Caitlin, you take the 100 dollar max list. Everybody, we only need a bit more in donations to get the push we need. Tomorrow, everyone meet here at 8 am to prepare for canvassing. Remember, bring your cold weather gear! We're going door-to-door here in New Haven, our Hartford, Bridgeport, and New London crews will be doing the same. Cami, you and two other people need to stay here tomorrow to help me with my online Q&As. I'm going to do a Reddit AMA and a Facebook Live Q&A tomorrow afternoon. And remember everyone, word of mouth is key. Tell all your friends and family why I'm the best choice for Senator, and when they believe it, have them do the same. Afternoon callers, stay here, everyone else, you're free to go enjoy your day."

Carter Roberts
Reddit AMA

Hello, people of Reddit. I'm Carter Roberts. You may know me as a former college basketball player for Yale, an NBA player for the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs, or the former assistant coach of several NBA, college, and minor league teams. Now, I'm running for Senate as a Republican in my home state of Connecticut. This is my first-ever AMA, so wish me luck! Ask me anything!

Way to take the initiative of being the first to ask! I believe that students should be educated on all their options for birth control. I ALSO believe that parents should be able to opt their students out of sex education programs, if they believe in teaching their teens about those type of things in a manner that they feel is more appropriate or better fits their family values. Above all, I believe that schools cannot, and should not, teach students that abortion is a viable option for birth control, when it is really a way of ending human life.

Yo, Napoleon! I saw you sitting with Reed at that Wizards game a few weeks back. Think he could dunk on you or would you slap it down? lol. Keep crusising!

Cal is a big guy! You know how most people on TV are smaller in real life? Other way around for the soon-to-be POTUS. I'm gonna guess that he can dunk with that height and being a former athlete. We really wanted to get a one on one game in that night but security got us off the court before we could. He's got a good 6 inches in me at least, so think of it like me matched up with Magic back in the day. Reed's not quite that tall, but I can't jump as high anymore either, so I'd say it's comparable.
He could dunk on me right now, because I'm still hobbling around on a bum ankle from trying to beat him in a marathon. But if we are talking me, in game shape? I'd get the steal from him before he could even drive. If he somehow got around me, I could probably block him too.
If I'm elected, or maybe even sooner, I'd love to play against him to answer your question for certain.
This brings up another question: could I hit a pitch off of him? Hmmm...
