"Well, know that I share that belief. I think lots of people lose their moxy and all when they step into this building, its all just about the next reelection. I haven't even thought about if I will stand next year."

She sighs, reflectively. Shifting her leg due to pain, she pulls a mint out of her coat pocket and munches.

"Unfortunately i'm fairly busy with election at the moment" Samara said wondering if she would pick up the fact he didnt put the 're' in front of the word election, "But i have a criminal justice bill im working on at the moment that I need some help with."

More weeks have passed in the hospital without visitors or a hint of the outside world as María Antonieta goes through the daily and weekly routines set by the therapists and the doctors without any change in her outlook. She still remembers nothing of her past and still does not feel a desire to search for it. She sees herself slowly improve. She can take additional steps holding onto the bars and words of English are slowly and clumsily entering her memory in short phrases and single words. Many of her broken bones have settled and the bandages casts and slings have come off. Now her leg is the last part of her that is still trapped in plaster.[ The healing of the compound break has been slow and painful making her tries to walk even more difficult. From the torso up no more marks of the attack are left except for one. The bruising has faded, the collarbone sling is gone the arms are uncast and the broken cheekbone is set back down. The only part that can still be seen is the scar that runs across her forehead and the emaciated and dull look that has replaced the life filled image that Senator Villanueva de Peña had shown before.

Today instead of the same routine for week in and week out there is a new change in her therapy designed mostly for the mental instead of the physical. She has been removed from her room and wheeled out by her therapists but is surprised when she is not brought to the gym or another testing room like usual but instead to a room with a computer set up in front of her where she is wheeled to.

"Today will be something different Maria..." the doctor starts to say. He speaks in English but intentionally very slowly like he is talking to a toddler so she can try to understand the words. It should be a short explanation but becomes long as he says words to her that she does not know or understand and he has to backtrack and try something else. Eventually he starts putting words of Spanish in to cover the gaps where he cannot communicate. It takes several minutes but he finally explains what they are going to do.

She has a computer in front of her and a controller hooked up to it. The therapist instructs her how to start up the computer and click through some screens like she is an eighty year old who has never used a computer before and she struggles with it with no familiarity at all for even how a mouse is used. She follows the instructions clumsily with no instinct or remembering of how to perform the basic steps. The basic lesson goes on for a short time before he has her bring up the program that the therapy is intended for.

He has her load up the game Crazy Chicken Kart 3 and hands her the controller while he explains how it works. It is a simple racing game and the main controls are only acceleration and steering but she struggles to have enough coordination to drive without running off into walls most of the time. She has no idea if she ever spent time with video games before what happened to her happened to her but if she had skill before it is not there any longer.

She continues with the game trying to get herself coordinated and drive for a while but is making very little progress when her therapist smiles encouragingly and congratulates her on her progress but says that it is time to return to her room for her normal speech therapy. He shows her how to turn off the computer which takes longer than it should and then he takes her from the desk and wheels her back through the halls to return to her room.

María Antonieta is dropped off and soon a few minutes later begins the tiring and slow speech therapy again but unlike usual she feels a little bit better as she does it. The speech therapist notices that she seems more engaged than her usual state of being apathetic and encourages going farther in the therapy. That takes away some of María Antonieta's good mood but by the time it is done she still feels a little bit better than usual. The new gaming therapy even though it was frustrating felt fun to her. With everything else she is just trying to get herself to do basic things that everyone else can from walking to talking to her range of motion and so the simple kart game was a pleasant diversion for her. Everything else feels like she is an invalid who is trying to just match up the basics of life but the virtual reality is something separate from that and brought a small feeling of excitement that she cannot remember feeling before and does not even seem familiar to her. The therapist was saying how it was beneficial to motor skills partially and cognitive recovery especially from getting her brain to process information and react quickly. Reacting to driving in a virtual situation is supposed to her help neurons start to get back to the pathways and effectiveness that they should be at. She does not know if that is accurate or not but she is glad for the different opportunity for something that has some enjoyment when it has been only dull routine for months. Nothing else seems like it is going to change as weeks go in and weeks go out but now that she has had a chance to see something that felt outside of the hospital even though it was still in it she hopes she can do it again soon.

Congressman Morton smiled back. “Why yes, I am. My favorite state park is Sonoma Coast State Park- gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. Sydney and I always make a visit when sailing up to Eureka in the summer. My favorite national park is- hmm. I don’t have a favorite national park actually. But I do have a favorite national forest, if forests strike your fancy- and I’m sure they do. It’s the one in my district, Mendocino National Forest. There’s a world of things to do there -hiking, boating, fishing, and painting are my favorites- and there’s a research center which seeks to make medicine out of the local plants.”

The Senator nodded, listening carefully as the congressman spoke, "Those sound like quite the enjoyable places to visit. As for national parks, I'd have to say the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is my favorite, beautiful mountains and beautiful hikes. The park is split evenly between North Carolina and Tennessee. As for national forests, Pisgah National Forest wins there. Not quite as many beautiful mountains to hike to the top of and see breathtaking views from as the Great Smoky Mountains, but beautiful views nonetheless and more waterfalls than you could ever want to see."

“Seems we’re of the same mind, then. The budget is coming our way soon, and I have a sneaking suspicion that our parks and forests will get the short shrift. I was wondering if you’d like to work together on a bill that would preserve current funding -or perhaps even increase it. That couldn’t be everything though, there would have to be something non-budget related to get more support. Hmm... if there’s one thing you would change about our parks and forests, something that wouldn’t cost money, or at least much more money, what would that be?”

“Massive sentencing reform, most everything you can think of. I’m calling it the clean slate act, problem is... I can’t be the face of it” Samara says frustrated “I don’t want to be just the black congressman, African Americans have talked about this topic long enough they don’t need to see another black guy talk about fairness in sentencing, about incarceration of primarily African American men.”

"Three baboons. The entire lot. You are complete donkey homunculusites" he shouted while throwing a Sony camera on the floor. "Can we get just a good audio pickup on this, a good shot, is it too difficult, you're smart kids so why can't you got-this-one-thing right. My dead grandma could do better shit than this." He kicked a nameless plastic chunk on the pavement.

He turned quickly to the three film students, who he had hired through backstreet craigslist, facing a slightly overweight Asian student while gritting his teeth slightly. "C'mon. get it right" the cameraman tightened his eyes while two large pillows below them jiggled, the neon streetlights reflecting into Lenny's eyes by a layer off his sweat.

"Let's go, GO!. Lights, record it" He walked into the large frame of a radio tower.

He spoke with intention; speaking of his family values, his economic policies, the typical and the generic which could be said over and over with no affect on anyone. This carried on until he reached the media, crudely written into a storyboard one of the students carried.

"I am here to admit I was a part of the media, I was a journalist, I saw it all. It is clear to me that they only want one thing, these large affluent press machines, they want a quick buck; no integrity, no fair coverage, no respect. The press of our nation only wants money, quick money, this is why they only serve those who have money. I'm not giving them a single dime, they can slander me all they want but I will never implode by their lies. The people's campaign shall never be extinguished by the lies of others, especially by the media's."

After filming got wrapped up, Lenny gave them a couple notes of fifties and left with his hard drive; spending the night with a couple of redbulls and a pre-installed editor.

"I'm glad you asked that question Sir, I oppose the bill brought forward by Representative O'Leary and the reasoning for it is because this will do nothing but stir tension in this great country that we are citizens of and is also an attack on Southern heritage and history. If local authorities want to implement similar policies as in the bill that's up to them but some Washington bureaucrat should not criminalise the remembrance of a major part of Southern history. If the bill makes it to the Senate I promise ya'll here that I'll filibuster it."

An elderly woman spoke up. “Are you going to cut my Medicare? I’m on a fixed income! But you’re probably going to cut Social Security too.”

"Well, then, you've gotta explain to us what social services you're going to cut to pay for the tax cuts!"

"Of course Sir." Kramer said before continuing.

"Some cuts to social services that could be made would be addressed through legislation I plan on introducing to the Senate which will dissolve the EPA and the Department of Education and handing these responsibilities over to the individual States therefore allowing the spending to go where it is truly needed."

"Ma'am, what I would instead seek to do would be to focus on cutting malpractice in Medicare as well as shortening patent times and capping private insurance premiums in order to allow the working American to afford the healthcare that he chooses and not the bloated system that the government chooses for them."

Another man stood up and asked a question.

"What are you going to do about the illegals flooding into this country?"

"I'm fully against the swarms of illegals that flood across our southern borders each and every day Sir. I think it's disgraceful that the American people are being let down by the liberal establishment in Washington who aren't doing anything to stop them coming over. I believe in the building of a physical barrier to both stop illegal immigration and in order to improve employment in this country."

The Senator spends a moment thinking, "I agree that our parks and forests need to be included well within the budget and I would love to work with you on a bill to preserve funding - or maybe increase it a bit. Though we would have to find something for the rest of the party to agree with in order to ensure the bill has the chance to pass. Though, something that wouldn't cost much more money? My mind is completely drawing a blank, anything that I can think of would require a sizable budget increase to actually be implemented. Perhaps you have an idea?"

“I’d still be a sponsor, but I can’t be the one to introduce it. People see criminal justice reform as a black issue, but if we are going to get anywhere reforming it... we need it to be an American issue. Me introducing the bill won’t help that.”

"Nah, I just don't know da man very well, so I guess I've been a bit jittery to ask him for anythin, especially political help. I'm not very good at the whole politickin part of it all, like gettin endorsements. Meanwhile da Governor here, of our own party, went out n endorsed da Democrats. I just feel stuck between a rock m a hard place, ya know?"

She sighs.
