@Five-Oh

Should not be tweeting emails MarliO. Very rude and uncivil behavior. Expectation of privacy when sending emails to other, must be respected! National Security and crime fighting reasons only not politics. Even Kooky Kramer deserves apology.

Marli almost squealed when she saw the tweet from Sam McGareth. She stopped with her knife as it pierced a piece of chicken and moved to the sink to wash her hands. She squirted some soap and quickly scrubbed her hands before picking up her phone while drying her other hand on her apron. She read the message and her heart sank. Had she gone too far with that stunt? Nooo but Kramer was certainly against her now. I'll just not do that stuff again maybe

She sighed before taking a deep breath. Going to the twitter profile of McGareth, she clicked the private message option and texted him.

"Hello Senator, I saw your tweet at me n I have to say Im realizing the inappropriateness of my previous tweet. I deeply respect your opinion, I hope we can maybe have a quick chat at some point. I'd love to hear what you have to say about my campaign or the New York race in general."

She pressed Send before falling into a chair, very nervous.

I can call on strong body of support, I have an strong progressive record, and I have been able to always garner strong support from progressive and liberal special interest groups. And beyond that, I would be the first African-American senator from Massachusetts since 1979."

"I have a good personal story, my father was an immigrant and died when I was young. I had a single mom dedicated to civil service as a social worker, my family marched with Dr. King and I have connections with civil rights heroes. When I was a teen I had already started getting involved in community service, in my 20s I founded a job training program, a college preparatory program and a tenant rights organization, ive spent my life in civil service."

"I was against the Iraq War in 2003, from the start, and rallied against it. In the Massachusetts house is reformed healthcare and ethics, expanded tax credits to low income workers, improved welfare and subsidies for children, supported the LGBTQ community and fought police abuse. All these issues that are at the forefront of our political conversation right now I have been fighting for and getting results for over a decade, before it became mainstream."

"As a US congressman, I fought hard against the NSA and Patriot act, I focused on protecting Wisntoncare and working on a Single Payer replacement for it, and I worked to go after those of Wall-Street who caused the recession with pro-labor legislation. I don't have too much overseas experience but I have made 6 trips to the middle east visiting our troops."

"Looking forward towards the election... My polling says that the most important issue for voters is Healthcare at 24% which I am addressing with my opioid bill and my upcoming healthcare price control bill. The second most important is the Economy at 21% which is covered by my record in the Massachusetts house though im working on another bill for that that requires massive corporations who have full time workers that collect welfare to pay a penalty that goes straight to supporting welfare programs. Third biggest issue is Homeland Security, which i've addressed with my better background checks, school safety and police camera bills. Finally the fourth biggest issue is abortion, I have a 100% rating from NARAL and recently voted against a major anti choice bill that most of congress walked out to avoid. I stood when others ran away."

"My biggest scandal was that I might be a muslim because of my last name and because my father I can't even remember was one. But I got to church regularly with my wife and 3 kids, plus thats not as much an issue as it was a decade ago. I'm a solid choice in a seat we need to win."

"Those numbers sound good, but be cautious. If the Republicans run Thomas Stevenson it is possible that he could improve their numbers. Luckily for us the association with Breckenridge may doom him.

You make a good case but before I forget, let's talk about Breckenridge. Earlier you said that what Smith said about him was false, is that right?"

"Look I know Breck, i'm the one who convinced him to move up his resignation... Backstage at the event in question I was with him almost the whole time I witnessed none of what Smith described, most certainly not in her timetable. Just before she went public with the claims she approached me and asked me to support them, I informed her that I had witnessed none of the behavior and have know Breck for almost a decade, I can't imagine him condoning such violence."

"Look i'm putting party first i'm not going to go after Smith for this but I'm certainly not going to help her, or support her promotion after such behavior. I'll keep my mouth shut in public thats it."

A few months ago at the Three Gun Competition that the President had hosted McGareth had been embarrassed when the civilian Governor Patton had beaten him in the pistol part of the competition and he had performed very poorly in the shotgun portion. It was a wake up call that he had been neglecting to maintain his skills and so on his returns to Hawaii every weekend he had been spending some time here at Koko Head range to be sure that he was keeping himself up to the high standards that he should hold and so far the results have been good but not enough to stop continuing to bring himself back up to par in the skills which had included some other training after he had not done as well as he should have in the charity marathon even though he was still proud of the security that he had set up that had gotten the attacker that was there.

The range is now closed after the day and McGareth has logged onto Twitter for a few minutes but after posting he finds that he has received a private message. He is suspicious naturally of the message being given to the public like the email was so he chooses his words carefully.

I am glad that you understand the importance of that issue. I would be happy to talk more with you. Would that be in New York?

Marli nearly dropped her phone when she saw the message and began to shake. She took two deep breaths before typing out a response.

"New York would work but if you need it to be somewhere else, I can go anywhere there's a train station to!"

She pressed sent before thinking she should probably say thank you...but she didn't want to double message him. She groaned at her mistake before simply putting down the phone and returning to the kitchen to distract herself.

Kelly Palmer constituent office, Santa Ana, California (present day)

Sydney quietly slipped into the nondescript building that served as Kelly's second office. He was back in Orange County for the weekend, and while she was here she wanted to check in on him.

A receptionist greeted her. "Welcome to Senator Palmer's office, how can he help you today?"

"I'm looking to speak to him. He said he'd be in."

"Oh... you must be coming in to talk about the speed limit bill. He'll be right with you."

As she waited, she noticed a small sticker stuck to one of the walls, covered in dust. With a tissue she gently cleaned off the surface to reveal a faded image with her face and name on it, with a slogan.

"SYDNEY CAO. FIGHTING FOR YOU."

En route to the State Capitol (December 1st, 1996)

Image

As she drove to her modest apartment in an all-right neighborhood, Sydney was filled with confidence and bursting to the brim with energy. Proposition 212 had been approved by voters on Election Day. Spearheading a proposition of her own (and a successful one at that, in spite of the Governor) made her known to the party. And the party liked what they saw.

When she had campaigned for Proposition 187, the media had called her "Mrs. Wilson". There was a sliver of truth that now- she had the chance to meet the now ex-Governor, and the reception was warm. He even encouraged her to run for Governor when Marlowe was termed out of office.

But that was for the future. For now, she would return to the legislature the following day to do the people's work in this next session.

California State Capitol (December 2nd, 1996)

Image

With every step, people were slowly gathering around. Legislative staffers would point and stare. Journalists would look antsy, as if any moment they were about to bombard her with a million questions.

"Senator Cao, Senator Cao-"

"I will take no questions at this time. It's only the first day of the session, let me focus on preparing for that, and I'll answer your questions tomorrow.

"Senator Cao... SENATOR CAO!"

She quickly went to her office, closed the door, and begun reorganizing the mess left behind a few days earlier. In the process she cleared off enough space for her photograph with Pete Wilson. She had it framed, so that she could remind herself of the day her political star began to shine-

Where should I end up next? Hmmm... Governor? At this rate, I should try to become a Senator! If Hayakawa could do it, so can I. Wilson's bound to give me his support, I just know it. I'd better start jotting down some rough policy sketches just in case-

Rally in Bridgeton

'JOH, JOH, JOH, JOH, JOH' screamed the crowd of ardent supporters of ex-union leader Joh Stansky. The Joh Stansky campaign was finished with the first phase of its' plan to win the election. The first phase was to grab the attention and the headlines, whether that be good or bad headline, to get Joh's name out to the broader population of New Jersey. That was done, and done effectively. People who were going to vote in the primaries would know his name. His aggressive tactics in the first primary debate, controversial statements via Twitter and during rallies, the interview with TNS news and finally the debate with Amaras in Trenton. The second phase of the campaign had begun, and that was rallying support. However, the specific details were kept heavily underground, and only those in the 'in', within the campaign would know of the strategy. The stage was set, literally. Joh did a short jog onto the stage, outreaching his arm to wave to the crowd.

"Thank you, Bridgeton. I'd like to start off with a statistic, 27.7%. What has the number got to do with you, you're probably thinking. Well, 27.7% is the percent of people in this town that are below the poverty line. More than a quarter of all residents here are below the poverty line, struggling to make ends meet. That used to be me, for many decades. Living pay-check to pay-check, and New Jersey ought to have a Governor that understands this. Our political class does not represent the many, they represent the few rich. Hotchkiss? She's bursting from the seams with cash. Schlang? Celebrity television stars are paid over generousiy. And the progressive, who hides in her bedroom tweeting .. she's a Huffington Post Journalist, so she's also rolling in it too. There's a reason why no normal, average people run for elected office. I'll tell you why, because the system is rigged against us. I can't afford to run a state-wind campaign for Governor! Hell, I can't afford to fix my broken shower head! I rely on small-level donations, from people like you. I don't want to rob you of your money, though. If you're that 27.7%, do not donate to me. Keep it.

The system is broken, and we need to fix it. Let's ban corporate lobbying. Kick the corruption out of the seats of power. Ban corporate donations to political campaigns too. Never has Big Pharma, the military industrial complex or massive oil companies cared about the little guys, and they have control over my opponents. The Progressive Party itself is the political wing of WalMart. Yes, the WalMart that underpays, overworks and constantly attacks our unions. You aren't a real Progressive if you endorse that. I will end the culture of corruption in our political system. That'll stop rich bastards from just strolling into power, I'll keep a lid on the revolving door of politics. They don't deserve any position, they have to earn it. And that's how Schlang and Hotchkiss operate. They think that they just own this place. Well they don't! They think they can just buy your vote with expensive advertisements. I always had a bad feeling around Schlang, a gut feeling that he was corrupt. My suspicions have only been proven recently when he tried to bribe me into conceding to him. Schlang is the epitome of corruption in New Jersey. The Democratic Party need to reject this corruption, or otherwise we will lose the morals of this party.

New Jersey needs bold leadership, with integrity and a progressive vision. Not a pseudo-Republican misogynist. Schlang is not a Democrat at heart, at heart he is a neoliberal, austerity kind of guy. Those are his plans for New Jersey, he is Hotchkiss 2.0, except his contempt for women is greater. I offer the only left-wing platform, to protect our minorities. Protect the LGBT community from hate crimes and defend their right's to marry and adopt. Protect our Latino community, keep them safe from deportation by ICE. Protect our Black community, by putting a foot down on police brutality. Instituting racial awareness programs in the police. Protecting women's right to choose, ending the wage disparity and stand up to Schlang. On the economy, we need a $15 hourly minimum wage. A jobs program. Stopping our jobs from leaving the state. Massive infrastructure stimulus projects. Bringing back our good, well-paying jobs. Eradicating poverty through stronger social programs. Tuition-free university, so all people can get a good education. Employing more teachers and increasing their pay. Medicare for All, we don't want people to die on the street due to their inability to pay medical bills. We need to bring justice back to this state, and we won't get it from any of the other phoney candidates.

This primary is important. Let's tell the Democratic Party that we're sick of losing. Let's tell the Democratic Party that we start winning again."

The Suite was all clean, all tidy since Scotty had left it just five days ago. It had been a tiring experience, the whole of it. The party was reeling, they had not expected the stupid thing to pass. He had told his staff to leave the room the moment they called it passing and he had just slammed the table repeatedly. It simply undermined him, nothing else but tainting his record.

He turned off the TV as it was no longer relaxing him at all, only serving as annoying noise. He picked himself up and prepared himself with a tidy suit. A dark blue tie would work well he decided as he began to dress. Pulling his pants up, he checked out the digital clock--7:47--he was going to be late. Then a sharp noise disrupted his train of thought. He glanced at his pager beeping. He scurried to finish before picking up the landline.

"Scotty here, shoot."

"Hey Scotty, it's Irvine, you said you wanted to talk?"

"Yeah, send a message to the Senator."

"Cao correct?"

"Don't say her name but yeah....write and tell her to meet me at the Governor's office by 10, say I would like to discuss this upcoming session. Nothing else, nothing less."

"Sir, are you sure about this? I know you are ang-...frustrated but don't you think we shou-"

"No Irvine, we shouldn't. But I need to do this, time to set things straight for her. Just do it."

Scotty hung up the phone. He hadn't meant to be short with Irvine but the man had been a nuisance lately, but he wasn't sure if he changing his chief of staff was the right move. At least not yet. He finished getting ready before heading out, signalling to one of the officers monitoring the hotel that he was ready as they headed toward the offices.

California State Capitol (December 2nd, 1996)

Cao was deep in thought when she heard a knock on the door. Who could it be now? An aide had dropped a note. As she picked it up to read it, her brow furrowed.

It seemed Marlowe wanted to meet with her. This came as a real surprise.

Today was the first day of the new session for the legislature. Governors generally greeted various Senators and Assemblymembers at this time of year, trying to cajole them into supporting their agenda.

That wouldn't make sense. I've voted against most, if not all of the bills he pushed for since taking office.

Was this some kind of threat? She crunched up the letter in a clenched fist, then threw it in the wastebasket near her desk.

She glanced back at her pictures. Those that were not of her family were of major figures in the state party, mostly previous governors: Reagan, Deukmejian, and Wilson. The Wilson photo was the only one where she was included, the others were autographed gifts from chairmen for their campaigns, as it came to Orange County. The only one that was not of a Governor was of S.I. Hayakawa. The same year she was elected a county supervisor, he had been elected to the United States Senate. She didn't agree with everything he stood for -he had been pro-abortion, as a Catholic and a traditionalist one at that she found the practice to be an evil to be stamped out- but she saw his political success as a sign that she too, could make it.

I could- no, I WILL make a name for myself in this country, and make a difference- and I'll be damned if Marlowe stands in my way. He wanted to have a "chat"? Fine. She was going to give him a piece of her mind.

She walked up to the Governor's office before the appointed time, wanting to be prompt. It was never polite to arrive late. Even when it came to meeting with such a stuck up-

Marli had finished meal prepping for the week. She put away the chicken pieces into their plastic containers and then straight into the fridge. She sighed as she wiped her brow before turning to check on her phone.

She couldn't stop smiling as she responded.

"Okay, sounds like a plan! Thank you so much."

Marli let out a deep breath before scrambling to think about how she would find him, what she would wear, where would they even go?! Her mind raced as she took a seat on her couch, drifting into a quick nap as she began to run through all the ways this could go wrong...or amazing.

Marli walked briskly towards the station. The traffic had been horrible, as it always was, so she had simply told her taxi driver to drop her off three blocks away. She wanted to get there early and this was the only way she was going to be able to do that...she hoped. Entering into the station from the bustling sidewalk, she was met with a major crowd. She rolled her eyes before moving towards the middle of the station.

She stood there for a second, repeatedly glancing at her phone. What am I doing, he won't find me here She sighed as she scurried up the stairs to watch over the whole room, nervously tapping her fingers on the railing. She fought the urge to look at her phone just yet but sneaked a glance at her smartwatch for the time. Seven till five, just in the nick of time She let out a breath as she waited, watching the crowd and following what appeared to be a group of street performers.

The flight from Hawaii to the East Coast is always a long one and McGareth had to reorganize to fly into John F. Kennedy instead of Ronald Reagan like usual. He had made his way to the subway after leaving the airport and came into the station from it. The temperature was expected to be in the high sixties but is instead in the mid fifties which makes it more cold than is comfortable since he had put on a very visible Hawai'ian shirt in red and white to make him easier to see along with his standard sunglasses. He is not familiar with the layout of the station as he moves through it but has experience and skill in recognizing a target in a crowd so he continues searching not sure if he will see her first or she will see him in his visible clothing first.

Give Joh a Go! HQ, Trenton

"Ok, I'll agree to give the Israeli topic a little break," Joh casually said, while raising the coffee to his mouth.

"Good. I'm usually of the opinion that any attention is good attention, but this Israeli stuff isn't going to help the campaign. On the other hand, what is perfect is how all of the political pundits start tweeting about your rally. The message is spread so much further, and really, they're doing a lot of work in getting you the Democratic nomination," his campaign manager replied.

"Yeah, that's always good. But, on the topic of Israel, I won't be quiet if elected. I understand I should leave this issue silent now, in hopes to being elected to Governor, that won't stop me from taking action. Y'know?"

"Welllll, what action?"

"I've got my eyes on the New Jersey-Israel Commission. Established late 80's, I think. It's designed to increase economic, cultural and technological co-operation, and there are some particularly scary parts about it I don't like at all," Joh said, continuing to drink his coffee.

"What parts are scary?"

"The technological co-operation! We're in part, funding the technology used in the aparthied system in the West Bank and Gaza. I don't want New Jersey to be complicit with war crimes, the jailing of children, torture and racial discrimination. So, I intend for one of the first things I'll do is scrap the Commission completely."

"I since if you're already elected it can't hurt,"

"No, it can't. I'm also considering replacing with the Israeli Commission, in which we artwash aparthied, with a Palestinian Commission. That'll really stir up the President. Imagine his face, an American state working together with the Palestinians! Through education, business opportunities and so, we might even start a diplomatic row. I'm still thinking about it. Not sure if I really want to go through with it, but if I did, it would be amazing."

She rubbed her eyes as she struggled to keep her focus through the throngs of crowds passing the station every minute. She seemed to lose focus every second but then she spotted something bright red, hints of white. She squinted as she made out the distinct shape of a Hawai'ian shirt, as she took a deep breath. It was him, she was sure of it. His face was clear now so she began to make her way down he stairs towards him. Her long brown trenchcoat-like dress followed behind her as she continued through the crowded station to the Senator. Passing through most of them, she reached where she had spotted him before turning to the left, seeing that he had just moved a couple steps to the left. She tapped his shoulder and spoke.

"Senatah McGareth?"

McGareth turns around carefully in the crowd to see the woman who has tapped him on the shoulder and acknowledges her once he is rotated.

"Correct. That should make you Marlenis Alberzero."
