Fear began to nibble at Arlen as he waited to go on stage, although he was joined by a few city council members he was still nervous. However, the nerves that he was experiencing weren’t like the times before. They weren’t like the nerves that he had when he announced that he was seeking public office and they certainly weren’t like the nerves he had when he appeared on national television. These nerves were new and exciting and made Arlen feel better than ever.

"Hello Alexandria!” Arlen said as he walked up onto the stage waving to the large crowd that had gathered for him. A smile had formed on his face, a smile that would last through the first half of his speech.

The crowd began to chant his name, and with that his nerves dissipated. Arlen began to feel more confident than he thought he would. His hands raid in another waving signal.

“It was only last September that Sarah and I attended the King Street Art festival, and let me tell you, it was one of the best art festivals that I have attended,” the crowd cheered again. “It’s great to back in Alexandria, it really is.”

“Now I’ve been travelling around Virginia since I announced my candidacy for Governor and one major issue for everyday Virginians is the Confederate statues. Around the same time I was here for the King Street Art Festival, your city council unanimously voted to remove a Confederate statue from a prominent street in Alexandria to somewhere less prominent in the city. I thought this was a simple request, but the Republican controlled legislature decided to stand with the racism and tyranny that those statues represent. Let us not forget why the Confederates broke from our union, their inability to change. I think Virginia Virginia needs change from the same old politics as usual. That is why I am proud to announce that within my first fifty days in office, I will order the removal of all statues related to the Confederacy.” The crowd cheered louder than before. “Racism has no place in modern day Virginia, and we should do all we can to end anything that represents that!” Arlen said, slightly raising his voice to compinstate the roaring crowd.

"Moving on to my next topic, the rights of LGBTQ+ people. As some of you may know we have this backwards, homophobia filled, disgusting bill called POMA being debated in our Congress. It unfortunately passed the Senate and is now on the docket in the House of Representatives. I have been fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community since I was first elected, and I will continue to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community as your Governor.” He pauses “If your Representatives and your President let you down, I vow to you that I shall continue the fight for the LGBTQ+ community. I believe that anyone should have equal opportunities no matter of your beginnings, your race, your religion or your sexuality.” The crowd cheered again.

He takes a sip of water, trying to be as relaxed as he can.

“Alexandria has done so many great things,” Small amount of cheers. “But I believe that one of the best things it has done is become an ‘Ecocity’. Not only is Alexandria helping Virginia progress into this new millennium, it is also helping keep our skys clean and our forests green.” He flicked a through his speech. “Being inspired by Alexandria’s commitment to the environment, I am also announcing that Norfolk shall follow in Alexandria’s footsteps. For I am announcing that my plan to have Norfolk City Council to convene and discuss the possibility of Norfolk being classed as an Ecocity.”

"With your support, I believe that we will be able to make Virginia a place for everyone, no matter what race, religion, gender or sexual orientation you are. We can help move Virginia out of the last century and into this one! Thank you Alexandria!” Arlen finished with a smile.

Arlen walked down the stairs of the stage and headed towards the crowd where he began to mingle with potential voters.
