"We'll get through this Cal. Just keep your chin up and keep soldiering on. I know a lot of things have gone wrong but hey it's not like anything else can go wrong now is it?"

Buck smiles reassuringly and leaves.

Cal mused briefly on the thought before sighing and turning his attention back to his desk, flipping over a sheet he was reading on some of the information for Jeffries.

If that man doesn't do his job right....

After being informed the Vice President had left the Oval Simon Denisevich arrived and entered. "Mr. President" he said with a concern in his voice "I just got back from Houston, I need to tell you something right away"

"They asked me back to Houston after results from some tests came back, they ran a few more. I went for a walk and stumbled across a room with her in it, when i tried to talk to her she was mostly speaking spanish, she was confused didn't recognize me didn't know the day or that she was a Senator.... a doctor told me she had amnesia. That's all I know right now, but if its true than we need to speak with her family, then the Senate Leader and the governor of New Mexico."

"Its not like we had secret service on her sir. I'd imagine her family moved her there for treatment and kept it secret for her safety and privacy. We can send someone to check on her room at GW to confirm."

"Really, come to think of it, I don't think I know anything about her family at all. Still, with what you were saying, with this move...I'm not sure what to think. I guess the first step is finding them and reaching out to them...and checking in at George Washington, I don't think that's a bad idea." Cal added, with a nod towards Denisevich's proposal.

"I'll keep it quiet, send a staffer with flowers or something mundane. If we confirm it however we should talk with her assistant... i dont remember her name but theyre close to her. We contact her next of kin and then the Senate majority leader, have her appoint an interim whip until the party selects a new one... finally we talk to the governor of New Mexico."

"But...I'd want to make sure we're in touch with her family before, well, before we make things public, or even public-ish. Something's going to leak sooner or later, or at least I would have thought it would. We can talk to Winslow about an interim, but unless they want to go public....and if they snuck her to Houston, I doubt they will...I don't think she, or the Governor need to know any details." He paused. "I don't think we need to give anything more to the Governor at all. He already knows she's is" he corrected himself. "Was in a coma, that's public knowledge. Unless she announcing a resignation officially, I don't think there's anything that would make us have to tell that. With Winslow, the same way. That can just be an approach about coming around to naming an interim without providing any...updates."

"Sir the voters of New Mexico deserve a representative, they can't just wait for her to get better which could take months. It could even be illegal to conceal this from voters, preventing the people from picking a replacement. I have to get White House counsel looking at it."

"But this is good news." he noted, partially trying to reassure himself. "She's out of the coma, she's awake, alive, and amnesia, well this could have been much worse. You can recover from that. This is good news, for her, us, the country. It could have been much worse."

There was a brief, somewhat awkward silence of a few moments after the President's reassurances, before he spoke again.

"Rossi...I'm guessing she didn't want to come back. Or did she?" he asked, adding a hopeful tone to the question.

"Rossi...I'm guessing she didn't want to come back. Or did she?" he asked, adding a hopeful tone to the question.

“She was back in Indiana within a few hours of the last hearing, her family has her on lockdown. They are quite adamant that she has no intention of having any role in public life. I tried to contact her every way I could I gave them my personal contact information and relayed our support and willingness to nominate her again. Still nothing.”

"Just making this kind of smear, not just to ruin some politically, but personally...." he looked more melancholy as he trailed off. "I just don't know how this country can go where it's going sometimes."

After a pause, he re-firmed his voice. "The Committee needs to get its head on straight and start doing something. These smears-this is as much a scare tactic against us as it was a, a destruction tactic against her. Whoever we've got behind this is trying to put us off nominating someone like her." He shook his head. "We can't let it work. But....well, we'll have to make sure the FBI can get more deeply into the background of the next one, before hearings. Extra precautions."

Simon resisted the urge to say that he wasn’t given enough time instead saying “the allegations were in no way true or credible. It was a political smear with no basis in fact, no fbi investigation could prevent an outright fabrication. Regardless Winslow is already proceeding.”

"No" Simon says "I think she has shown she can't handle this, I think we should get Havich down there to direct things. Or have Winslow appoint someone to handle the day to day details of the investigation."

Simon nodded grimly "This job was never going to be easy..." Simon shook his head a bit "We got this sir, a hard fight is the only one worth having. We just need to keep moving and show we are stronger than this."
