Brankers slightly startled, jumped out a little from his chair before regaining his posture.

"Sorry Senator Locklear you startled me a little there. It is what people believe... but how could something so right feel so wrong? I just... feel as if I would be taking the right to choose their representatives from them. I mean if the people of Oregon want to keep Senator Allison who am I to tell them that they can't. Bu,t on the other hand I know how out of touch politicians can get after long years in Congress. It is just a difficult decision."

"I completely understand Senator." She began earnestly. "Its something to think about, but I ultimately think that an amendment like this is for the best. Yes, the people of Oregon may elect Senator Allison again and again, but its worth thinking about why he's the only real choice they get in November. Its not because he understands their issues or is particularly inspiring, its because they've become compacent and they feel like its all they know. If we actually make sure that they can get someone into this chamber who represents them, and not an idea or placeholder, then we can change the course of the country for good. And that's something we're all interested in." She explained. "He's going to tell you that its party line to vote against a cleaner, more efficient democracy, but we both know its to save his seat for himself."

Smith glares at Jamie, unsure if she should be mad or just laugh, before starting to speak.

“Our country has gone through many struggles with terrorism over the past 20 years. And it all began with 9/11. I was in my first year of college when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked. I remember sitting beside my roommate, who was in tears, as we watched the building her father worked in up in flames while we sat in our University of Chicago dorm’s TV lounge.”

“I’m sure plenty of you have similar stories along with thousands of other Americans. It was the day the world stopped. And now, I am proposing that our government takes a day every year to stop and reflect on these and other terrorist incidents.”

“Patriot Day is already a thing. Our government recognizes it, but the victims are only memorialized with flags flown at half-staff and optional moments of silence. I am proposing that Patriot Day be transitioned into a federal holiday, with closures of all non-essential government services as Americans take the time to grieve and reflect, and to honor those in our lives who have been lost to these atrocities.”

“I hope not to take up too much of our time, as I understand we have other pressing business, but I think we all should agree that September 11th should be a national day of rememberance. We must reflect on history, we must not forget the dangers of extremism.”
