Character State of Origin: Vermont
Character State of Residence: Resident for 18 years (1st September, 1999), originally born in South Korea to an American father, and Korean mother.
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic
Main Strengths:
  • Charismatic - A certain charismatic charm, and friendly conversationalist tone infused with his overly optimistic demeanour makes him an immediate, charming centre of attention.
  • Prepared - Keen to research, to learn, with a thirst for over planning, depth and detail, it makes him a formidable opponent in a large amount of situations.
  • Ambitious - Cut throat politics do not phase his temperament, he has a goal, and his eyes fix firmly on the trophy. He is ambitious, quick to rise in the world of politics and ready to continue to do so.
Main Weaknesses:
  • Retaliative - Often, situations may arise where it is necessary to retaliate, similarly as often, Baek Hyeon puts little thought into this retaliation, and may have to face the consequences of such a rush to respond.
  • Inexperienced - Although quick to rise the ranks, it was purely through prime time and opportunity that he did so, prior to his election as senator, he had little to no involvement in politics and instead worked in the entertainment industry as a producer. It makes him weaker in high pressure situations, and more prone to snap.
  • Mediocre Public Speaker - Although charismatic, which can get him out of some situations, his slightly below average English skills, and his flaws when it comes to public speaking, such as stuttering and Freudian slips, his public speeches can sometimes fall below par, despite his efforts in preparation.
Biography: Baek Hyeon was raised in the Gangnam district of South Korea. Renowned for its citizenship's superiority complex, his mother was a spoonfed aristocrat who fell in love with a travelling impoverished American man. Whilst their relationship was frowned upon in such a conservative state, their love affair flourished and Baek Hyeon was born to a lower middle class family, with no grandparents as they had cast out his mother, shameful of her relationship to his father.

During both kindergarten and primary education, he excelled in particular fields and flopped in others, with his English being below average, despite being a proficient linguistic in Korean, and able to write coherently in Hangul. The main area in which he excelled was performance and media, to which he was able to continue on pursuing all the way through his education in South Korea, until he finished his education at the performing arts academy in Seoul, and moved to Vermont, Burlington. He was employed by Universal Studios and would frequently travel around the country on contracts that work would place him on.

By 2011, he had been living in the country for 12 years, and after the same constant life and work, which was thoroughly enjoyable but nonetheless repetitive, Baek Hyeon was hard pressed in which aspect of the world he wished to venture into next. It was here that the potential opportunity to be elected into the countries Senate rose up, through pure chance as he walked past a couple discussing the election. He returned home, sat down, and began to research into the political system. In retrospect, it was something he had wished he had understood prior to moving to the states, so that he could have taken part in elections and been an informed citizen of the country, but that did not matter, what did matter is that an opportunity for change presented itself, and he wanted to take it.

Before running in the 2014 election, he was sure to take some time in the years previously to run some local charity work, along with his girlfriend, as well as attend educational establishments to start appealing to the youth with his ideals. His campaign was heavily reliant on social media, and used the youths influence and that of the general public to sway the vote in his favour. His charity work did not go unnoticed, and he received commendations and local media mentions for his work with the poorest in the local state. He also worked as an adviser in the Democratic Party in Vermont leading up to the election, where he gained his preliminary experience of what a life in politics would be like.

He won the election in 2014, with the majority voting for his role in the House of Representatives, and he vowed to continue to working for the state for as long as was feasibly possible, hinting almost immediately that he would be running again.

Having went to some of the best state schooling systems in the World, coupled with having being raised by a hardcore left wing father, it was no shock that he too would inherit the left wing ideals that is father so openly expressed, as well as seeing the benefits that state controlled education has in East Asia when he was growing up. Healthcare was also state controlled, as was much of public transportation, the concepts of private insurance, healthcare were relatively new to Baek Hyeon, however after conducting research and trying his own hands at how a revised healthcare system could work. he took to his campaign focusing largely on local politics and how local systems could not only be improved, but follow a standard such as that set in Maryland, and then set a revised standard for the rest of the country to one day follow suit in left wing politics and ideals.

Although the election win was sudden and the political times moved far too fast for Baek Hyeon initially, he was able to adjust over time, and continued to use his role to voice his beliefs and opinions to he government, as well as consistently promising his home state that additional work would continue to be done concerning local politics. He utilised his charismatic personality in local interviews to help secure him a second re-election in a tight 2016 race with the Progressives.

Elected in a tight vote once again 16, he remains a Representative for the state of Vermont. Challenges await him.

It's noticeable. He's really gotta come to terms with the fact that he's a freshman Senator from a tiny state who's never been in Washington before and he can't just go screwing around with the Speaker of the House or Senate leaders. He's gonna be in a better place if he gets over that.

Character progression! this is actually what I wanted for him to deal with

Hello, and welcome!

If you've got questions about American politics or the roleplay, feel free to ask in the thread, there are plenty of people who can answer your questions.

I can point out a few things on the application too, if you want.

The first part I'll need to slip in is that the 2016 seat for Senate in Wisconsin is currently taken. The 2012 seat however is available.

The one big thing that should be pointed out is that it's extraordinarily rare for a Senator to be elected that young, 35. The average Senator is over 60 years old with many elected in their 50s. Not having any political experience is something that makes winning a run for office at that level very difficult. For something as big as Senate, it usually takes a lot of experience, or other factors to get in, and the person's expected to be quite a bit older. I'd recommend making your character older and with some past experience to give them a shot at the run, or if you want it to be a little closer, you could do a smaller age and experience up and perhaps have him elected to the House in a blue seat.

Yeah, I don't think it's really an OOC problem, since Fowler's arrogance matches his app. The question is really an IC one of whether he'll have anything left by the time he starts coming around (or maybe doesn't, who knows)

AH, sorry! I will be sure to fix my errors and ask any questions I have here :)

EDIT: is the blue Senator seat in Montana available, and which year would that be?

Yep! That's the 2014 seat available there. (2016 ended up being a rout for the Democrats in the Senate, the 2012/2014 seats are better for them)

I would greatly recommend having a 2010 seat. But, if you really want a 2016 seat as a Dem, we can bend the events a little and allow you to have NY's seat. Then we would give ND's blue seat to the Republicans.

As long as I am not taking another players spot, or being too much trouble, I would much prefer a 2016 seat. If it is too much trouble I will adjust my background further to make room for earlier seats :)

Actually, now that I think more about it. NY's seat is not available due to IC events and a primary.

You can do either, though re-posting helps if the discussion moves onto another page. If you edit, just make sure you tell us when it's done, and you'll be all good.

Character Position/Role/Job: Senator

Character State of Origin: Montana
Character State of Residence: Resident for 16 years, originally born in South Korea to an American father, and Korean mother.

The main area in which he excelled was performance and media, to which he was able to continue on pursuing all the way through his education in South Korea, until he finished his education at the performing arts academy in Seoul, and moved to Wisconsin, Appleton. He was employed by Universal Studios and would frequently travel around the country on contracts that work would place him on.

By 2012, he had been living in the country for 11 years, and after the same constant life and work, which was thoroughly enjoyable but nonetheless repetitive, Baek Hyeon was hard pressed in which aspect of the world he wished to venture into next.

Before running in the 2014 election, he was sure to take some time to run some local charity work, along with his girlfriend, as well as attend educational establishments to start appealing to the youth with his ideals. His campaign was heavily reliant on social media, and used the youths influence and that of the general public to sway the vote in his favour. His charity work did not go unnoticed, and he received commendations and local media mentions for his work with the poorest in the local state. He also worked as an adviser in the Democratic Party in Montana leading up to the election, where he gained his preliminary experience of what a life in politics would be like.

Elected in a near landslide, he is now a Senator for the state of Montana. Challenges await him.

Ive revised that and taken it out, I shall instead introduce it later down the line, say presidential elections or something similar. Unless of course something else is available

Looking at him, I highly suggest moving him to Vermont's 2018 seat.
