Nice Eric Brown quote in there:
“It was a nasty little brute. Looked beautiful but didn't fly beautifully. Once you get it on the ground, I was told not to leave the controls until it was in the hangar and the engine stopped. You could be taxiing toward the hangar and sit back when suddenly it would go in a right angle.”

Also, Tigger, are we flying Spitfires (booo) or Hurricanes (yeah!)?

I mean, the Spitfire is pretty objectively a higher-performance craft than the Hurricane, so that's preferred, but I don't think it would be entirely out of sorts to keep a Hurricane or two around if its pilot was to prefer it.

If we're going to be flying into improvised airfields in the middle of nowhere behind enemy lines, I think Hurricanes would be preferable.

True, and the Hurri's generally more of a stable platform as well. I won't say it's not got advantages.

Just as a point; I'm pretty sure that anywhere a Hurricane could land, the Spitfire could equally land. RAF sector stations had sealed runways, but most (if not all) of the satellites had grass. Spits, or early Spits at least, had no trouble operating from grass runways. There's really not much to suggest the Hurricane would be better for short field ops or for grass runways. The Hurricane being more stable isn't ideal either - unless you mean in terms of gun stability. But considering this is a bunch of elite fighter pilots, gun stability shouldn't really come into it. Just in general, the Hurricane being more stable (I don't know if it actually is or not) isn't necessarily a good thing. The Spitfire is perfectly stable, at least laterally. Longitudinally, not so much. But again, ES are elite fighter pilots. If the Spit is slightly more unstable than the Hurricane, the enhanced maneuverability that affords you can only be a good thing for this lot.

The Spitfire is a better aircraft. Arguably the best in the world at this point. Surely there can only be one choice here?

Grass runways are at least graded, the fields we're likely to be flying into on missions aren't; I'd take a wider track any day of the week for operating on unimproved fields.

Plus the Hurricane is easier to repair (always a plus when we're operating behind enemy lines), and I do believe it has a longer range as well.

Plus, its a lot harder to incorporate this into a post if you're flying a Spit.

To give me a chance to make Jimmy do a sick impression of Sean Connery, thus making the perfect setup for a Gold Bond pun.

The wider track is an advantage, yes. But honestly, anything worse than a grass strip and you're asking for trouble either way. If there isn't an airfield, well, I guess that's where the commando bit comes in. Out of choice, I would not try to land on anything that wasn't a flat grass field as a minimum. And you can definitely get a Spitfire down on that. Anything worse than that and you risk all sorts of prop strikes and what have you. The Hurricane might have longer range, I don't know, but if it does it can't be by much. They're both interceptors. In regards to battle damage, again, yes but only up to a point. The fuselage would be, but everything else not so much.

Either way, it doesn't really matter. None of this has to be 100% realistic. Pretty sure we had people turning up in Wildcats and P40s last time.

As for the flights, being Gold and not White...isn't that a Star Wars reference? Red, Gold and Blue?

So fun fact: my roommate decided to have an unannounced midnight fish party (no euphemism) which encompassed the entire apartment.
WHICH IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO WRITING.
I'll go to bed slightly early and get this OP done tomorrow, given that the entire evening's shot.
And reeks of sturgeon.

Or maybe we'll just do lucky 13.

Also, "White Flight" just brings to mind unfortunate patterns of socioeconomic restructuring, rather than a quartet of fiercely motivated Nazi-killing machines.

Adding to the conversation: a Hawker Hurricane allows you to see the runway (or lack thereof) in front of you, whereas the stubby nose of the Spitfire hides it from view.

I am curious as to what an uneuphemistic midnight fish party entails, and why it makes places reek of sturgeon.

Also, damn racists, ruining our Nazi-bashing name.

Anyways, I say we settle the dispute by going with either Peashooters or I-16s. :p
