The Appetizer

Character Name: Alunda Serpenthelm
Gender: Female
Image

Age: 18
Race: Mainly human, cat folk features apparent.
Class: Bard
Skills: Able to play the lute and harp, since they have to be able to cast buffs, astronomy, finance, basic self defense.
Items: A backpack, a lute, clothes, a lantern and two standard rations. 20g in loose change.
Moral Alignment: Lawful neutral

Goals and Aspirations: In the end she just wants to have a good fight with people. As such, that goal has shaped her into what she has become since it was set when she was 12.

Personality: Cold and collective, she is known for her last minutes buff as a way of conserving her energy in case she needs to cast a big one. But if needed she can have a lust for blood that would scare even men.

Backstory: Born into a wealthy family with practically everything at her disposal, she was famous for being the daughter of the Serpenthelm family, a noble family that held large influence over the region. After some probing into her family ancestry she learnt that one of her ancestors had been the bard of a famous knight, although it was rubbed out of her education since she was home schooled. A few more months later after more probing she found that her family's wealth was built upon the oppression of the peasants, explaining why her family was the only rich one there. As such, taking along with her a backpack, a lute and the set of clothes she tailored herself as a performer's outfit she ran away to the next few towns. As she walked through the towns on her journey, it is said that she has blessed her clothes to be clean permanently and clean it self every 12 hours. During her journeys walking through most towns, she would always stop at the tavern there and start playing as she usually arrived at nightfall, which meant it was filled with worn out souls wanting a burst of energy. Exploiting this, she used her magic from the lute and would play a song to give most energy, which she would be rewarded with with tips although no one knows why they're just grateful. After that she occasionally joined adventurers for quests although it was rare since her prices got steeper. Eventually she stayed in the Blue Water Inn in exchange for a small rent since she also attracted patrons from far and wide just to see her. Although she stays there, she can be hired at a steep price, or perhaps under a special condition.

Player Name:[b] Jonathan Cana
[b]Personality and Backstory:
Like his character, he was born into a wealthy family and had everything given to him on a golden spoon. Following this lifestyle, he felt no need to go out and do much and as such stayed in most of the time until he saw what others did outside. After that small revelation, he decided that he would become independent at one point or another in his life without the help of his parent's fortune. And as such during the time where they left the country to get some dirty money and in between school, he would work odd jobs without fear since no one knew him and eventually managed to earn enough to buy a lute, and learn how to play it. Eventually cut to him being 18 where he had continued working odd jobs to save up money and even performed for some cash, he moved out vowing to never return to receive the filthy money. At first it was turbulent, but eventually he managed to get a stable education and managed to get a job somewhere. While studying he eventually came across this game, which revealed his aggressive style with him practically bashing any enemy to death regardless of class with no regrets.

The Appetizer

Character Name: Leide
Gender: Male
Image

Age: 18
Race: Human
Class: Mystic
Skills: Barrier based magic, water magic, EXPLOSION MAGIC! Staff fighting, fishing, acrobatics.
Items: Staff, commoner clothes, backpack, rope, flask of water.
Moral Alignment: Chaotic good

Goals and Aspirations: Wander the world, helping people and learning new magic in the process.

Personality: In a word, Leide is naive. He is the kind of person who will try to help people, no matter how foolish the case may seem, and will try to trust people as much as he can. Of course, this regularly gets him into trouble, with people taking advantage of him being the least of his worries. However, that doesn't stop him from continuing on with a smile on his face. It takes a hell of a lot to make him angry. That, or you simply have to target the right thing.

Of course, this contrasts with his other great love, explosions. Even though the spells that utilise explosions tend to take a lot out of him, to the point where using more than four of them will cause him to collapse, he will always use them if he feels the situation is appropriate.

Or if he just wants to make the scene feel a bit flashier, it doesn't really make a difference in his mind.

Of course, the opportunity to use explosions generally puts him into a more… hot-blooded state of mind...

Backstory: Oddly enough, Leide has had a fairly normal life. He grew up in a small fishing village in a very mountainous region named Tarbes, where he lived with his grandfather. Until the age of ten, Leide grew up learning the art of the fisherman, believing it would be the trade he pursued for his whole life. However, just a few days before he turned eleven, a massive storm swept towards the town.

For a while, it looked like the storm might cause the ocean to sweep the entire village away. However, just as the situation was hitting it's peak, a middle-aged man, garbed in a bright blue cloak and wielding an intricate staff, stepped up to the coast and began to chant. As he chanted, a massive astral barrier formed around the entire village, causing the water to sweep over it rather than the village. Leide could only watch on, completely entranced, as he watched schools of fish and even a few truly massive sharks swimming through the water against the barrier.

From that day onwards, he was hooked, and sought out the mage. The man, who was drinking at the villages inn, seemed horrified when Leide begged him to teach him, and tried everything he could think of without actually killing the poor boy to try and discourage him. However, when he realised that the increasingly lethal booby traps weren't going to work, he eventually gave in, agreeing to teach the boy in the nearby mountains, so as to not disturb the villagers.

For the next seven years, Leide learnt magic from the man, who never revealed his name. He became decently adept at it too, gaining great talent in his masters signature Barrier magic. However, on the day he turned eighteen, Leide's master told him to go and wander the country as the next stage of his education. Leide, eager to try using his magic to actually help people, agreed, setting out on his journey.

Theme Song and/or Anything Else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASWcIZWmXfk

Player Name:[b] Michael Ford
[b]Personality and Backstory:
Michael tries to be a generally good person, although he is acutely aware that he is, in fact, not even close. He is lazy, rarely goes out of his way to help other people, despite the fact that deep down, he honestly does want to, and only recently got his first jobs at the age of twenty, two of which he has already been let go from. He is also incredibly shy, with terrible self-esteem. Hell, he doesn't even really know the people he's playing H&H with for this campaign, because they're friends of friends who he's only really met once or twice.

As such, he decided to play Leide the way he wishes he could act in real life; a largely selfless, if incredibly naive, person, who isn't too lazy or scared to help others if he decides he should, and is confident enough to stick to his ideals.

The Appetizer

Character Name:Kolfinna Henbane
Gender: Female
Image

Age: 20
Race: Human
Class: Mystic
Skills: Spellcasting (especially fire and teleportation spells), potion making and flying. Non magical skills include hunting and cooking
Items: Wand, dagger, cloak,
Moral Alignment:True Neutral

Goals and Aspirations: To become the most powerful witch alive and head her coven one day.

Personality: She's quiet and a bit of a rebel, she loves to experiment with magic and is often seen alone or with a book when not in the company of a trusted friend. Magic is a sacred thing to her and it's infuriating when it's not treated with respect. It takes a long time for her to open up to people but when she does she's a great friend. Kind to children and prefers to do her own thing most of the time so she's not very good at following orders.

Backstory: Kolfinna is a member of the Wildwood coven, a group of Mystics, Sorcerers and Wizards (the females call themselves witches and the males call themselves wizards) who live an isolated existence in tuned with nature and the gods. Nature is very important to their lives and they are fiercely protective of their sacred places. They reject most industrialized things and prefer to be among themselves, although they are quite friendly and welcoming to outsiders. Finn, as she is nicknamed by friends, and sometimes called Fish because fish have fins, had a happy and quiet life among them, although she was often a wanderer. Traveling all over the world to see and learn as much as she could, she has a grimoire filled with spells that she collected and jots down from her travels but always returns to Wildwood. The month before their big winter solstice celebration she decided to take a trip again, promising to be home in time for the rites. Never having really been to any smaller cities (big ones yes), she decided to travel to one. She doesn't know how she found this tavern but it suits her fine for now.

This looks good, but there's a bit of a mix-up and I was worried this would happen because it's kind of unusual, but you, Nuridia, you yourself are not the "Player". Let's call you the "Author". You write what's happening to the Character, Kolfinna, but you also will be controlling her interactions with the "Player" which is some random person you also control (but they can totally be based off you IRL).

Also, sweet images everyone! I've always had rotten luck with images, but you all really seem to have hit it out of the park

Also also, I fixed the annoying [b] thing in the app, it was a typo I had noticed before, and I thought I fixed it, but apparently not.

The Appetizer

Character Name: Macgaryn 'Macca' Waywocket Snengast Cabblan Billewick Folkekongen
Gender: Female
Image

Age: 57
Race: Gnome
Class: Gunslinger
Skills: Repairing and maintaining things (especially guns), short-range ranged fighting, acrobatics, hunting, some basic alchemy, pretty good historical (especially ancient) knowledge, excellent at drawing and mapmaking.
Items: Backpack, Rope, water flask, matchlock pistol, gunpowder horn, 10x bullets, leather armor, standard rations, small sack, parchments, dip pen, ink, wax tablet & stylus, 20gp
Moral Alignment: Neutral Good, emphasis on Neutral.

Goals and Aspirations: Surprisingly enough, Macca's goal is pretty simple. She wants to travel the world All of it - she wants to visit every continent and country, learning about the world as she goes.

Personality: Even for a gnome, Macca is small in stature, but luckily she is far from having a Napoleon complex. She has some of the key personality traits often associated with gnomes - the desire to live life to the fullest extent of the laws of nature, an intense curiosity, and an uncanny ability to not only focus on a task, but make it seem fun (in their mind). By gnomish standards, Macca is serious and driven, with an unusual propensity for mental focus in a variety of tasks, not just her favored 'hobbies' or her career. Has a deep respect for history and a deep disrespect for people who do not have at least some modicum of respect for the past. Rather impatient, even for a gnome. Is effectively mute due to an injury sustained roughly twenty-five years ago, uses a combination of sign language, gestures/grunts, and her wax tablet to make up for this - as a partial result, she is an extremely fast writer.

Backstory: Macca grew up in a medium-sized clan of gnomes living in the town of Klebwelbury, a medium-sized town in the typical gnomish fashion occupying most of a partially-collapsed cave whose collapse left about half of the town (mostly the commercial and lodging sections of town) exposed to the elements on a cliff jutting into the sea. Above and around the caves that made up the residential and governing districtus of Klebwelbury were ancient, pale ruins of stone that filled the young Macca with wonder and curiosity. When she wasn't helping her parents with the small tavern she called home, she would often explore the ruins, or help her neighbor with making and repairing arquebuses - a task that would for a time become her trade in town.

It was actually an accident that led to her changing her lot in life. An elven archaeologist by the name of Bixon had managed to get himself stranded in town after his ticket out had smashed itself on a sea monster, and grudgingly admitted in his tavern that it would be some weeks before any rescue for him would be able to come. Macca was 29, perfect apprenticing age for a gnome. Fascinated by his tales of cultures and histories both ancient and modern, she was immediately hooked. She 'had the bug' as Bixon had so eloquently put it, and with a bit of grumbling from the neighbor, she became his apprentice.

And thus did her lifelong career begin with Bixon as an archaeologist. Many years passed, with him teaching her the tools of the trade and her teaching him a bit of the gunsmithing and use of the gun she had picked up studying over the town's smith - he had tried to teach her magic, but she proved somewhat uninterested and wholly incompetent - attempts she made had a tendency to backfire violently. At the age of 50, Bixon decided that Macca was... well, not AS good as he but good enough that she could set out on her own, not as an assistant, but as a proper researcher. And so she set out on her own, and her life now finds here here, at the Blue Water Inn, on the road to yet another set of ruins to the east.

Theme Song and/or Anything Else: Looking Glass - Brandy

Player Name: Valerie Wattsen
Personality and Backstory: Like Macca, Valerie Wattsen was born to a long line of seafarers who travelled it in peace or war - most recently in peacetime. She was even born on a boat, the cruise ship SS Golden Sky. Living on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, the sea called to her, and she eventually heeded it in the form of helping her father out in running a fishing boat. However, her calling soon turned to higher levels, and she ended up in the Navy as... a cook on an Arleigh Burke-class that spent most of its career sailing around and looking imposing. Disappointing, but not surprising. She's on postdeployment for a break from that here in town, and entered the Heroes & Halfwits game out of curiosity.
Theme Song and/or Anything Else: Alestorm - Hangover
Text Color: #0053B0

By the way, the idea that guns replaced the bow and arrow due to stopping/penetration power is a myth. Guns replaced the bow because guns were easier to train for. Guns that could penetrate plate armor wouldn't be invented until such armor was obsolete for other reasons, which was probably as late as World War One. Even then you'd need a high-caliber rifle to do it - even modern pistols won't cut it, and an assault rifle will only penetrate on a good day.

Class Creation Form

Name of the Class: Gunslinger
Job Description: Some people make things, some people kill things, the Gunslinger does both. Like the Ranger that they evolved from, some Gunslingers excel at precision aim from incredible range, some for unleashing a rain of death from medium range, and still others excel in the art of severing you from the mortal coil in close combat. A Gunslinger's weapons are a reflection of themselves, and are their most prized possessions. Putting a combination of smithing talent with accuracy, no two are alike, as each one is engraved and crafted to the Gunslinger's advantage. A gunslinger excels at both using and maintaining their weapons, as they must - smiths that cater to them are few and far between. Modifying them, too. They also know a bit of Alchemy usually, though mostly the type that explodes.
Skills: Cannot use regular ranged weapons (except crossbows and arbalests), swords, or staffs. Can use slings, daggers, axes, maces, spears, and hammers. Save throws from Dexterity and Wisdom. Gunslingers rely most heavily on Skills from Acrobatics, History, Insight, Perception, Sleight of Hand, and Survival.
Guns are the signature weapon the Gunslinger class. Apart from the Blunderbuss and Dragoon, they must use Bullets and a horn of gunpowder - Blunderbusses and Dragoons can use anything as ammunition, but they still need gunpowder. Bullets cannot be enchanted - Guns can, and this enchantment transfers its effect to the bullets, but the enchantment must be recharged regularly. Enchanted guns cost twice the price of an unenchanted gun of the same variety. Guns generally have a higher crit rate than bows, but are as a whole slower to reload - though skilled Gunslingers can make the difference between a fast-loading gunslinger and a fast-loading archer very slim indeed. When out of ammo, all guns can do Melee damage of +2, functionally similar to a wooden club. Guns (apart from the handgonne) can be modified (multiple barrels, revolving cartridge loader, different woodstock, carvings/engravings) for a price dependent on the modification and gun in question.
HandgonneLiterally just a tube of metal.
Comes in a Long version which is a tube on a stick.

The key is not to use Google Images if at all possible. Use a Booru if you can, their tag system is the best of any imageboard I've seen besides maybe Pixiv (which is in Japanese so), however Boorus are overwhelmingly slanted towards anime images - Danbooru is very strict on this, Safebooru less so, and Gelbooru... isn't SFW so who cares. DeviantART is also good if you don't care about using more than one tag or if you know what artist you're looking for, otherwise it's dreadful. Tumblr is both very laggy and has the same problem as DeviantART with the addition of not even having a proper NSFW filter besides blocking tags. Which you can't do anymore.

That'd be very helpful, as the only pen-and-paper RP I've ever participated in was a homebrew that I believe was hacked together out of bits of Soul Eater, TTGL, and lots and lots of Pathfinder.

We pissed off a demon enough to suck us all into a subdimension within five sessions. Grand old time.

Just use the free System Reference Document for 3.5, 5th ED or Pathfinder.

The Appetizer

Character Name: Drake Shadovar
Gender: Male
Image

Age: Physically: 20-ish, Since becoming Shade: 247, Total: Unknown
Race: Shade
Class: Warlock
Skills: History knowledge (He's lived through history, at this point), Arcana knowledge, Demonology, Shadowmancy, Necromancy, Summoning and Binding (Of Gloom/Shadow beings, demons, and necromantic constructs), Staff Fighting, Knife Fighting, persuasive
Items: A heavy winter cloak colored like dried blood that he wears over a shirtless black-skinned body covered in strangely glowing tattoos with a hood that covers his face except for his glowing eyes, a curved knife made from strange obsidian, an ebony staff of seven feet that has strange carvings in it that can be identified as Netherese, Infernal, and a third language that is unidentifiable, a pack of general traveler's equipment, a book made of an unidentified material, and black clothe pants held up with a piece of hemp rope.
Moral Alignment: True Neutral... Ugh, I hate alignments.

Goals and Aspirations: Drake wants to eventually become the most powerful arcane practitioner on the planet by collecting and hoarding as much knowledge as he possibly can. Perhaps become a lich one day and found an undead kingdom or something, but for now he's focusing on looking into his own past, his last name indistinct in his mind but some of his memories are triggered by experience, causing him to look all over the planet for something he might have been doing at one point.

Personality: Essentially a psychopath without psychotic nor murderous tendencies, Drake is unable to think of anyone but himself. He is incredibly selfish and if it means he comes out of a dead end situation better than his allies, then he will do anything to achieve that goal. But he also understand that having allies is much more useful than having enemies, and so he tries his best to hide his true feelings under a mask of pleasantness and charismatic conversation. Perhaps even a little flirting, if the subject is receptive to it.

Backstory: The process of becoming a shade is incredibly painful and costly, requiring the loss of a part of the subject soul and for a piece of the Shadowrealm itself to be inserted in its place. This process causes many boons and many faults for the recipient of the Shadowsoul. Many seek this 'gift' for its boons, those being prolonged life and a closer affinity with the shadows, but they never know the true faults with it: The loss in vitality, the loss of memory, and the horrible dark thoughts and mutterings that worm their way into the subject's brain. Shade-ification is a gift, though, simply by the definition that it is given as a reward. The princes of the Shadowrealm give particularly useful servants or gifted scholars the option to become shades, meaning many shades are the best and brightest of their age. So, when Drake awoke in a desolate town with no memory of how he got there, who he was, nor who had turned him into a shade, he nevertheless had some inkling of what he was, never mind who he was. As he watched a black drake fly off into the distance, surely the thing that had destroyed the small town he had found himself in, he went over what he knew. Shades were typically very intelligent or cunning or able-bodied individuals, meaning he must be of some import to the world, either to have been made into a shade by a prince or to have made himself into a shade. And by the gear he found with himself, the staff, clothes, dagger, and tattoos, he assumed he was some sort of warlock or wizard.

So, with that knowledge, he set out for the next two hundred years looking for evidence of who he was, until he walked into a tavern one day...

Theme Song: Fell On Black Days by Soundgarden

Player Name: David Lisowski
Personality and Backstory: David Lisowski was born to a middle class family in a small-to-medium sized town. He never went without dinner unless it was some sort of rebellion thing (Never happened much), he had enough water, a nice house, a nice family, a nice dog. Everything was fine. He graduated high school with a small group of friends, as he was somewhat nerdy, and as valedictorian. Using scholarships from the school he wanted to go to and some freelance ones as well, David was able to get into a nice school, and after switching his major around a little bit, landed on an English major with creative writing as a focus. He's currently in his third year at a nearby prestigious university, and just looking to have a fun time.

Play style wise, David is fond of every sort of character. Typically, though, he leans toward the more charismatic and brainy sorts for these sorts of things. He also isn't a horrible person and as such he doesn't like to back stab his party.

Nicely done, brilliant work. Accepted.

Haha, this is really well put together, thanks for saving me the hassle of putting the gun stuff together. Accepted.
Free Empire of the Low Isles wrote:Character Name: Drake Shadovar

The items seem a bit more intense than I would prefer for a band of hopefuls and up-and-comings, I'll allow it, but don't be pulling any "I summon an undead army that swarms the tavern and kills the bandits". Accepted. (also, fix your image if you have the chance)
Rupudska wrote:The key is not to use Google Images if at all possible.

A fair point, I suppose I should learn how to use them. :p

Unofficially, but for reference, I'm using a friend's father's 1970's first edition guides and books because they're the least fleshed out and most janky, but fairly creative in their own right, this way we can sort of just add anything we want. Officially, I'm pulling bits from all of the editions, so use whatever set you want and if you don't have any, that's fine too. I wanted this to be entirely story driven, so the engine doesn't really matter.

Tag for sure.

So, noticed that in the weapon's tab, there weren't any axes/spears/clubs/etc. Does that mean that those weapons are explicitly prohibited? Or are other weapons allowed on a case-by-case basis? Was really hoping my Half-Orc could wield a big 'ole Axe..

Edit: App's up.
