Biography: Brian Jackson was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, on July 12, 1977, and was the first son of Rebecca and James Jackson. The Jackson household was an upper middle-class family, and both Rebecca and James were happy and had few arguments with each other. Both were also liberal university professors, and their political beliefs were passed down to their children, too. At the age of 6, Brian and his family moved to Illinois, after his parents both got jobs at the University of Chicago. Benjamin had always been interested in technology and the IT sector, and went to MIT to receive a Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science.
Soon after graduating, Brian received a job offer from IBM, and he accepted, and settled down in Massachusetts. Brian worked at IBM for around half a decade, until 2005, when he decided to get involved in politics. Brian had been interested in politics for a very long time, but had decided against perusing a career as a politician right off the bat, instead going for his other passion, technology. Brian ran for Boston city councilor, winning handily in a deeply Democrat district. On October 27, 2008, Brian almost lost his life. As he was driving down a Boston street during rush hour, a dump truck crashed into the car next to him. The truck plowed the other car, killing the driver inside. The car then smashed into his car, injuring him. Brian had left that lane just seconds earlier, ind if he hadn't, he would have lost his life. Brian was in crutches for the next 7 months, and was in the hospital for the first month. The cause of the accident was determined to be a brake failure in the dump truck, coupled with slippery road conditions as the road in question had not been well-maintained, and it had recently rained. While contemplating the accident, Brian decided that he would run for mayor so that such an event would not happen again. He campaigned on improving Boston infrastructure, and reducing the number of accidents that occurred, and won. The campaign was hard fought and hard won. Brian managed to secure the Democratic nomination, after being endorsed by incumbent Mayor, who was retiring and had not run for reelection, as they had become friends during Brian's time as a city councilor. But that was only the beginning. The Republicans sensed an opportunity, as their candidate narrowed Brian's lead in the polls. Funding to the candidate from Republicans began coming in, first slowly, then in a torrent as the race narrowed further. Then, the Democratic Party realized that they now risked loosing the mayorship of what was supposed to be a reliably liberal city, and began pouring their own funds into the race. The race was now a toss-up, both candidates dead even in the polls. But that all changed with the debates. Brian had a strong performance, enough to put him ahead, and he won the election by 6%. A year after winning the Boston mayoral election, Brian set his sights on the Governorship. He ran in the Democratic primary against the incumbent Governor, but lost by a landslide. Soon after losing, Brian realized it had probably been a good thing that he didn't get win, as although he was a mayor, he didn't have much political know-how and didn't know how to govern well, and had been relying on his subordinates to get the job done. So he learned. He poured over news articles, studies, Wikipedia pages, everything he could get his hands on related to MA and American politics. He learned a lot about the intricacies of both politics and economics. In 2014,now feeling prepared, and motivated by his brother's campaign in Illinois, Brian launched his own bid for the governorship, winning the Democratic primary by a slim margin. During the primaries, he was not expected to win, until the front runner suddenly fell ill and was forced to drop out. The (now former) front runner decided to endorse Brian, as he was the candidate that was the most ideologically similar, and with the combined support, he managed to win. He campaigned on a platform of legalizing and regulating Marijuana, balancing the budget, and improving the state economy by giving a helping hand to the tourism sector. He was elected by the slimiest of margins, within a percentage point, but was elected nonetheless. Soon after entering office, he began to follow through on his promises, by legalizing and regulating pot, and by launching a successful country-wide advertising campaign promoting Massachusetts tourism. Brian also set up a bipartisan committee focused on finding wasteful spending throughout budget, which revealed millions of dollars worth of spending that wasn't being put to good use. Brian then set himself to balancing the budget. He pushed a plan to raise the estate tax for the rich, cut 'wasteful spending', and lower the salaries of the Governor. In order to pass the bill through the legislature, Brian used every single card in his deck, and it made it through with no votes to spare. The plan lowered the deficit, but did not completely balance the budget. In order to completely balance the budget without significant spending cuts, a tax increase was needed, but the amount that was needed was not allowed in the MA constitution, meaning that a constitutional amendment was needed. So far, Brian has pressed and passed the initial stages of the Constitutional amendment required to raise income taxes on the rich, but it is yet to fully pass. Brian's controversial policy decisions did dip his approval rating below 50% for months, it did recover as MA began slowly reaping the benefits, and now sits at around 54%.
