History: After the fall of the United States, the Pacific Northwest was thrown into turmoil. Washington State and Oregon had been some of the most strategically important states for the nation, as many natural resources like timber, steel, and other metals were easily found in the area. Boeing, one of the world's largest producer of aircraft, and other military-industrial corporations had bases in the region, and the US Navy depended upon the facilities in Port Angeles, Tacoma, and Portland to maintain its dominance over the Pacific Northwest. As such, as the nation as a whole began to break apart and as its venerable, hallowed institutions crumbled under the weight of the collapse of the country, the White House allocated much of what military and civilian resources the nation had left to protect and maintain the Pacific Northwest. Attempting to gain some measure of safety after the fall of the US, the new nation of Cascadia (voted in in a referendum) elected to become a member of the Commonwealth. From there, the nation held its first democratic elections successfully, and now has a slightly higher standard of living than when it was part of the USA. The nation is renowned for its volcanoes, its biological diversity, its sheer number of dams (over 100 of them in Washington state alone), and the haute couture lifestyle of the nation's inhabitants. The region exhibits a high level of national awareness and civic engagement.
Military Manpower Per Branch (1-3 percent of population): 50,000 men in the Land Component, 3,000 men in the Aerial Component, and 10,000 men in the Naval Component. Conscription is not mandatory except in times of war or emergency.
