October 3rd 1999. Eight people go missing in the forests near Albany, New York. Three weeks later, their bodies are found contorted and fully intact despite the rate of decomposition. The cause of death is mass organ hemorrhage, despite no external injuries. The case is closed, unsolved, due to contradictory evidence.
November 22nd 2003. Thirteen constables of the Boston Police Department are convicted of taking bribes from undisclosed third parties. They are released three weeks after their conviction under suspicious, but official, circumstances. The case remains under suspicion to this day, and all those released went missing three days later.
May 12th 2009. A body is found washed up on the coast of Essex County, Massachusetts. Cause of death is estimated to have rooted from a complete lack of internal organs, but cannot be determined, due to no external injuries. Like the 1999 case, it is closed due to contradictory evidence.
September 13th 2012. Anti-Corruption advocate Charles Arkham, and Massachusetts District Attorney Michael Dunwich are killed, both shot exactly eight times in the chest. The sole suspect, William Innsmouth, is acquitted in record time, due to 'contradictory evidence'. It remains a cold case.
December 18th 2017. Once again, a woundless body is found deceased, lacking all skeletal presence. Police are currently investigating, as are PIs, though they are being roadblocked by law enforcement. Present Day.
Welcome to The Scared and Forsaken, an RP about a few denizens of the coastal suburban town of Porthead, Massachusetts attempting to oust the corruption behind the cities administration, end the various cults occupying the town, and find out what has happened to all the mysteriously abducted and killed hikers and hobos. It will not be an easy ride, and death will very likely lurk around every corner. The RP will have mature elements in it.
That being said, you will be playing citizens of the town, but you won't be playing soldiers, cops or superheroes with an actual chance of getting out of this mess unscathed. Your characters will be hurt, beaten, broken, and mentally scarred, if not outright driven insane by the revelations. So keep a spare or two ready.
1: OP/Co-OP have final say. No exceptions.
2: OP/Co-OP reserve the right to deny any application for whatever reason.
3: No God-modding or Meta-gaming.
4: No directly controlling another player character unless given permission to do so. As stated above you may freely control any and all NPC’s that are not central to any major plotline.
5: Posts must be a paragraph minimum. One-liners are unacceptable.
6: Try to use correct grammar. No walls of text that are not broken up into paragraphs.
7: Be courteous to one another in the OOC. Feel free to be as much of a dick in the IC as you desire.
8: Be active should you apply. No need to be online 24/7 (as I certainly will not be) but don’t go through the effort of joining and never post anything. If you will be gone for any significant amount of time please leave a message stating that you will be gone. Those who do not risk having their characters killed off.
9: You character cannot be overpowered. You can die and every challenge should be just that, a challenge. Any overpowered characters will bring forth the wrath of the OP in the form of even worse obstacles and outcomes.
10: Have fun.
The Elder Gods, beings of incomprehensible power and age, the mere presence of one is enough to drive humans into a irrecoverable madness or depression. Though to a select few with a high mental fortitude or low sense of intelligence their presence can be withstood, and a great insight can be had from conversations. One must be careful how these conversations take place however, as not all Elder Gods are benevolent.
Unknown to all but the most well versed of occultists, Elder Gods are not entirely invincible, if they are summoned into a mortal avatar, there is a brief moment of time in which they are vulnerable, albeit still very hard to kill. A gun will not do the job, nor will a bus. But they still have a limit to how much damage they can take for about three hours after they're summoned.
- Yahweh/God/Allah:
- The source for the trio of Abrahamic religions and all their denominations, the lesser spirit of Yahweh/God/Allah was created by Jivan as an intended shepherd for humanity, guiding them along a path of life and fulfillment. However things quickly went awry when those he spent most his time with strayed from his designated path. Depicted as either a bearded and grandfatherly man, or as a featureless humanoid, his appearance is usually an indicator of great change. Over time he has either given up on his job, or simply sees no need to guide humanity any further. Either way, he rarely makes appearances on earth or displays his immense power anymore. Despite this the number of followers he has exceeds that of the Elder Gods, making them mildly aware that he could obtain a higher level of power in the aether.
- Lucifer:
- Also known as The First Betrayer, Lucifer is the first being to go against the patron god he started to worship. As such he was struck down, left to wander and empty and boiling Earth for millenia. Until he was once again given an offer of mercy. He would be given the charge of corralling and punishing those who also went against Jivan. But that was so long ago. After accepting and after humanity began their life, he all but gave up, not capable of keeping up with the massive influx of humans and betrayers. He eventually derelected his duty, moving to obscurity and becoming a sort of myth. Occasionally he gives rather one sides deals to mortals, in exchange for something in return. At this point, he's also nearing Elder God status.
- The Suited Man
- An enigmatic unknown he's depicted as a suited and jacketed man even in ancient Sumerian texts and cave scrawlings. Initially, many speculated at some form of time travel, but it was quickly discounted. All that's known is that he likes to play... games, with mortals, usually involving death as a result of losing.
- Yabae:
- Yabae are a necessary evil in the world, created by The Gatekeeper of The Eternal Plane as a balance to the already formed gods, Yabae is a personification of idiocy, callousness, and sorrow. Though they come in many forms, they are always a dog sized creature with a layer of skin or hide (sometimes still with fur) barely even draped over them. They have been the starting point for cryptids like the chupacabra, and not unlike said creature they feast upon animals and humans alike. All for a mysterious goal that only The Gatekeeper knows. Unlike most lesser spirits, they are just as vulnerable to damage as any other animal, though they are very hard to hit due to their swiftness and natural aversion to being seen.
- Shades:
- Created by The Harvester as a 'gift' to his worshippers, they are lesser spirits who actively seek out souls to harvest. Being killed by a shade is painless, all the pain from the event being permanently etched into the soul of the shade, a punishment for seeking and actively wishing death on others in their mortal life. Those killed by shades are reincarnated as some form of animal, usually that of a Raven or Crow, though with all the memories they had as a human. Shades cannot be warded off or killed by anything sans UV light, or godly powers.
- Demons:
- The subjects of much classical literature and fear, they are the ascended followers of The Destroyer, as varied as humans, they contain many subsets and powers, and are usually much more capable than human beings, immune to fire and capable of possessing those with a weaker mind, they are not something to simply sidestep. Though unlike in classical literature they can't be solely warded off by holy symbols. In truth, they can be warded away and weakened by any symbol one truly believes the meaning behind. A devout Christian could use a cross, yet at the same time, a true hearted Communist could use a hammer and sickle, while a red blooded Patriot could use the flag of their nation. All will equally harm a demon, giving one an opening to end them rightly.
- The Massed:
- The Massed are the followers of The Drain of Agony who have spend entirely too much time around his artifacts. Driven to madness, they began grafting parts of other disciples to themselves, become large infected masses with multiple limbs, faces, and sometimes even whole bodies. Their forms sometimes consist of multiple conscious minds and bodies stitched wantonly together as a single immortal grave. All capable of screaming in anguish when one is finally killed, or when they are wounded.
- The Parasite:
- The parasite is a hidden being, starting out as a unicellular organism in rainbow trout, it remains dormant in the digestive tract for three weeks, slowly incorporating the entirety of the mammal's internal organ system while tapping into their nervous system to keep them unaware, acting as a foreign life support. Essentially treating the animal as a puppet, trapped in their own mind while they are paraded around by a tube of flesh and bone within their abdomen.
Eventually they cut off that life support, leaving an empty sack of flesh and bone, before laying eggs in the water again and dying. At this point the eggs treat it as food when they hatch, they are then consumed by the rainbow trout before beginning anew.- Hippogriffs:
- An unholy amalgamation between a human and a bird, Hippogriffs are not the fantastical being everyone thinks they are. Their origin is as hideous as they are, they stem from ancient Crete, much like the fabled minotaur, stemmed from the union of a human woman and a now long extinct eagle species, rivalling the size of a man. The result was the Hippogriffs, standing taller than a horse and capable of stripping a man to bone within minutes, they are large, and very swift.
- Cult of Sorrows:
- The Cult of Sorrows worships the Drain of Agony, with a sympathy for his pain. The cult largely remains docile surprisingly, simply mutilating themselves and 'the blooded', fully inducted members of the cult, who have shown true devotion to the cause. Their end goal is to alleviate the suffering and pain for their god, by taking it upon themselves. The highest rank is that of the 'High Blooded', usually wearing the dirtiest of robes, stained red and brown by their blood and the dirt they sleep in. The next lower are 'The Blooded' those who wear bleach white robes and only disrobe when the infliction of pain is ongoing. Below that are the recent inductees, 'The Unblooded', robeless, and occasionally clothesless, they are the ones who tend for and care the full blooded members after their rituals, to avoid infection and death as a result of their self inflicted wounds. The lowest are the Neophytes, the members of the cult that are used for public actions, food, funds, donations. They are typically dressed in simple fashion, white dress shirt and crimson dress pants. They are usually descreet in their dedication, but they aren't entirely sane either.
- The Band of Joy:
- A more naive mind may believe the Band of Joy to simply be a group of like minded and mentally ill community members. But in truth they worship the being they call 'Jivan'. Harmless enough, they simply do community service in the service of their 'God', running homeless shelters and typically giving. Oddly enbough they keep their own tabs on the local cults, and even help them out from time to time. Oddly enough there are no distinct rituals besides being kind to one another. Despite this, many occultists think they're up to something more sinister.
- The Murder:
- A rather ominous cult, all members wear a suit of bird themed steel armor and all are dedicated to hunting and killing Shades. That being said, they also have a penchant for collateral damage in the efforts to hunt said shades. Almost every member has a rather odd skill for falconry and can almost always be denoted by the presence of crows or ravens. Trained rather extensively in combat, their blades are among the only physical objects in the material plane that can damage a Shade, and their armor is nigh impervious to said Shade's own blows. Other than their goals, they remain a complete mystery, as their methods of recruitment and training are not known outside their own circles.
- The Pure and Outspoken
- The Pure and Outspoken are only a cult in definition. They are classical Templars, their methods and training passed down over centuries and into a mildly different society of demon hunters and killers of the supernatural, they will stop at nothing and no one to ensure that the human race is safe from harm. TO them,
none are so sacred as to stray too far from their wrath. They're hand reaches across the world in secret, and they come into conflict with all manner of occults and even occult hunters in an effort to purify everything. Behind shadow companies and corporate giants, they maintain a modern level of funding and equipment,
from assault rifles to alloy melee weapons they are capable of open combat to a terrifying degree.- Jor's Ravagers
- Jor's Ravagers are a sacrificial and violent cult based around their patron god: Jor. Hellbent on converting all life on earth into either a physical offer to their god, or into one of their own, they will even go so far as to attack in broad daylight to further their goals. Every member has a chilling bloodshot stare, and their eyes glow eerily in the dark. It's suspected that they've been granted a greater sense of vision by their god, but that's just conjecture. All that is known that once one of their number gets their hands on you you may as well be dead. And they will not stop pursuit until they themselves bite the dust
- Scribes of Hyavelep:
- Outwardly the most normal of the various cults, the Scribes simply remains secluded out in the firests of New England, compiling info on the various occultists tricks and factoids. Granted they will defend this knowledge with a zealous fervor, they will part with it for a trade of equally significant knowledge. Docile in most accounts, they set up in log cabins away from modern society, with massive radio towers to transmit what they have collected to other sites for back up. Outwardly, they dress as normal human beings, an otherwise mundane description for being lumped in for a such a conspicuous lot of others.
