Both are going to be challenging. While I'd prefer you heading the British Cause, Canada is still very important. My problem is the person playing Germany is extremely crafty (That's a compliment) but Canada is going to be between a rock and a hard place itself eventually. Also, Dreadnoughts weren't in service until 1906, so the Navy wouldn't have those either.

On Google it said their army was 3 million men strong, including reserves, by 1914. Even after the outbreak of the war it only swelled to a little under 8 million though
