Humanity is losing the war.

Countless planets have been reduced to glass, billions are dead, and the Covenant continues its indiscriminate march into the heart of the UNSC. A war machine that cannot be stopped; a harbinger of our extinction. But hope prevails, defiant, and no matter the odds, no matter the cost humanity will fight to the bitter end for its right to exist. And so, congratulations. You have been selected by the Office of Naval Intelligence, having demonstrated great skill, cunning, a willingness to sacrifice for the good of humanity, and, most of all, luck. You stand now as the finest the UNSC has to offer. Men and women, soldiers, the very best of the elite. The chosen few. A decision that was not made lightly. Regardless of creed or background you will stand as pillars against the coming storm, protectors of Earth and all her colonies.

Handpicked by ONI Section III Special Tactics and Operations, you have summarily been reassigned to the UNSC Salt the Earth as the newest member of Quasar, an unorthodox battalion under the direct command of the Office of Naval Intelligence. It is expected of you to take upon yourself the duties deemed vital to the continued existence of mankind. Officially you do not exist. Standard procedure no longer has meaning. Your only goal is the success of the mission no matter the cost, and remember, failure was never an option.

Welcome to the BLACK Initiative.

This will be a short-term RP. You are a member of an ONI special operations task force aboard the UNSC
Salt the Earth, a Hades-class Stealth Frigate, and you will be undertaking suicidal missions deemed vital to the human war effort. Furthermore, Quasar is known for its unorthodox roster of men and women that are otherwise ill-suited for the norms of active military duty, including those discharged for severe infractions or various other reasons. Characters can be from any UNSC branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.), however, only active combat roles will be allowed unless otherwise stated. The Covenant will be the primary antagonist. The plot will be divided into several chapters with downtime in between each for character interactions. Each mission will have various objectives (and optional objectives) that need to be completed, but there will be no set or else predefined method to fulfill these goals in most instances. Teamwork will keep you alive, but do not expect to survive the trials presented to you. This is a story, not a game, so prioritize good writing as opposed to winning.

This RP takes place in an alternate universe shared with Halo: Trepidation.

• No one-liners. Use correct grammar to the best of your abilities. Use paragraphs. No oddly coloured or obnoxious text. All posts must be legible and make sense.

• No arguing in the OOC.

• Must understand basic Halo lore. When in doubt, ask.

• Be active should you apply. Alternatively, do not post with such frequency that others cannot become involved. A three day grace period will be given before any inactive characters are forcibly moved along with the plot. Alert the OP or the OOC should you be gone for any extended period of time. Failure to do so will lead to character death.

• No Spartans. You are trained professionals, but you can and will die should the odds not be in your favor.

NAME: Kotze, Ezekiel
BIRTHPLACE: New Llanelli, Brunel system
SEX: Male
AGE/DoB: 37 (11/21/2512)
FAMILY:
    • Kotze, Asher (Father, deceased)
    • Kotze, Dinah (Mother, deceased)
    • Kotze, Abraham (Brother, deceased)
    • Kotze, Michael (Brother, deceased)
    • Kotze, Isaac (Son, deceased)
    • Llewellyn, Mariana (Wife, deceased)

APPEARANCE:
Standing at 6'3'' (190.5cm) and weighing 207 pounds (93.9kg), Major Ezekiel Kotze is a formidable man with his presence alone. Face is long with a sharp jawline, dark eyes, and black hair shaved or else cut exceptionally short. Skin is dark and pockmarked after many years spent at war. Powerfully built.

RANK: Major
PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT:
13th Airborne Regiment, UNSC Army, New Llanelli

SPECIALTY: Gunner
BDU DESIGN: Standard
SKILLS:
    + Fearless
    + Tactical Leadership
    + Raw Physical Strength
    - Accuracy
    - Stubborn

PSYCH EVALUATION:
Kotze displays a brilliant mind that is often distracted by the objective at hand. Not one to give into anger, however, he shows little compassion towards those who have failed to earn his respect and is often called ruthless. Expects results from subordinates and constantly pushes himself to set the example. Few close friends, but generally is considered outgoing or, at the very least, can hold a conversation with little trouble. Has developed a sincere hatred for the Covenant following the death of his family on New Llanelli, and on several occasions has gone above and beyond what was required in order to defeat the enemy.

BIOGRAPHY:
Ezekiel was born the youngest of three brothers on November 21, 2512, on New Llanelli to Asher Kotze and his wife Dinah, immigrants from Estuary. An agrarian world, the family lived a simple existence as ranchers in the largest of the planet's three settlements, not wealthy but very much above the poverty line, the children having as normal a childhood as any other. Not much would change on New Llanelli following the start of the Human-Covenant War in 2525, the war being considered too distant an event to be of much relevance to the Inner Colonies. Regardless, in 2526 the ailing CMA division stationed on the planet would be disbanded and reconfigured into the UNSC. Looking to be something more than a farmhand, Ezekiel would enlist at the age of twenty and would spend the next decade working his way through the ranks of the UNSC Army, eventually receiving recommendation for officer training. A few months short of his thirtieth birthday he would be sent off-world to Tribute. It was during these few months that Ezekiel would see combat for the first time after the UNSC Leopard was boarded by Insurrectionist after intercepting a false S.O.S. broadcast. Caught unaware, the attackers would very nearly take the ship, however, Ezekiel would rally those around him and would successfully hold the bridge despite being outnumbered and outgunned, ultimately securing both the UNSC Leopard and the Insurrectionist freighter. Ezekiel was offered a position on Reach but would decline in favor of returning to his home planet. Not long after his return he would marry Mariana Llewellyn and would have a son, Isaac.

In 2546 the Covenant would stumble across New Llanelli. Despite having never engaged the Covenant firsthand, Ezekiel and the 13th Airborne Regiment would successfully defeat the invaders in several key skirmishes, including the destruction of a Covenant landing site that would prevent a full-scale invasion of the planet until reinforcements could arrive. Unfortunately that help would never come. UNSC ships could not win against the technologically superior Covenant and the planet would be glassed despite their best efforts. The 13th Airborne Regiment was among those evacuated but 1.4 million civilians, including Ezekiel's family, would be vaporized. There was no time to mourn his loss as the New Llanelli Army Division was quickly returned to combat only weeks later during the Battle of Imber. The 13th Airborne Regiment would again be responsible for several important victories, fighting street-to-street, room-to-room, and decimating the enemy with such ferocity that the Covenant would abandon the campaign entirely. A much needed success for the UNSC. For his part in the battle, Ezekiel was scouted by the Office of Naval Intelligence Section III and was later inducted into the BLACK Initiative as commander of Division Quasar. Many from the 13th Airborne Regiment would join him.

Ezekiel never forgave himself for the loss of his family, but has since turned his burning anger into a potent destructive force against the Covenant time and time again. Under his leadership, Quasar would survive encounters on Skopje and elsewhere, and would show considerable promise within ONISTO.

RP EXAMPLE:

DO NOT REMOVE: Gillian-013
Various roles exist within a squadron and specialties, although little more than a preference, serve to fill these roles.

• ASSAULT
Lethal at CQC. Utilizes shotguns, hand-to-hand, and melee to great effect. Disadvantaged at range.

• DEMOLITIONS
An explosives expert with a specialization as an anti-armor unit. Can level entire city blocks - or Covenant battalions - but suffers from poor mobility given their heavy equipment. Well trained in all manners of explosive ordnance including rocket launchers, C-7 Foaming Explosive, C-12 Damage Packs, and flamethrowers.

• CORPSMAN
A valued asset to any squadron. Can treat most wounds, abrasions, and burns until better medical care becomes available.

• GUNNER
An anti-infantry unit. Prefers automatic weapons with sustained bursts of fire such as the MA5B or M739 LMG.

• MARKSMAN
The designated marksman. Suited for mid-ranged combat and favoring the BR55 or M392 DMR.

• RECON
A lightweight pathfinder unit tasked with scouting, infiltration, and tasks requiring stealth.

• SNIPER
A precision marksman that often provides overwatch when not engaged with target assassination. Best utilized at
mid-to-long-range, and given the opportunity can easily disrupt enemy actions via the elimination of Covenant leaders or commanders. Disadvantaged in close-quarters.

• SOLDIER
Proficient in many areas but oftentimes failing to master any one skill. Are generally well rounded for most situations and can easily fulfill any vacant role as needed with some adequacy.

• SUPPORT
Carries the extra ammo, gear, and supplies while assisting in combat and non-combat related tasks. Otherwise is no different from the SOLDIER.

• TECHNICIAN
A catchall term for the squadron mechanic, software specialist, or engineer. MECHANICS are familiar with the upkeep and utilization of most wheeled or tracked vehicles and are typically excellent drivers. SOFTWARE SPECIALIST can work their way into most computer systems, human or Covenant, and generally trade intelligence for combat ability. ENGINEERS know how to build most anything with limited resources.
BLACK operatives utilize standard ODST armor and equipment with only slight cosmetic differences, the most notable being a darker camouflage pattern. Several variants exist for specialized roles and usage. Customization is allowed so long as armor integrity is not compromised.

• FLAK
Designed to aid soldiers in close-quarters, the left pauldron is replaced with a longer two-piece ballistic plate which offers increased protection to the arm and torso while in a firing stance. Plasma-based injury is also reduced somewhat. Originally designed for CQB, this variant has found increased popularity with demolition units. Left pauldron and chest plate are a deep red in colour by default.

• HAVERSACK
Additional rigging and compartments, as well as a substantially larger rucksack, give this armor variant an increased storage capacity in the field, however, this has necessitated the removal of several hardened plates which has left the armor more vulnerable in frontline operations. Used extensively by medics. Chest plate is a deep green with a medical cross displayed prominently on the left pauldron when used by corpsmen.

• RECON
Issued only to ONI operatives. A redesigned chest plate and helmet lower IR signatures at the cost of overall protectiveness. Shoulder pauldrons may be removed to allow for increased arm movement.

• SHARPSHOOTER
A lightweight design for use with designated marksmen. The right pauldron is shortened or removed entirely to allow for increased arm movement whereas an optional plate can replace the left for increased defense against counterattacks. Additional optics assist in target acquisition and elimination. Left pauldron and chest plate are blue.

• STANDARD
The basic ODST Battle Armor.
Any important questions will be catalogued here for future reference.

Established in 2538, the BLACK Initiative is a clandestine venture headed by the Office of Naval Intelligence Section III Special Tactics and Operations (ONISTO). Focused primarily on unorthodox combat strategies, BLACK divisions are meant to function autonomously and in similar capacity to that of the Spartan-II soldiers, and are often deployed when SPECWARCOM assets are unavailable. BLACK divisions are given near limitless freedom to operate and are completely separate from the typical command hierarchy. They belong and answer only to ONI.

Operations include but are not limited to assassinations, counter-terrorism, espionage, and planetary defense.

• AURORA
    2538 - 2540
    Lt. Remy Steyer
    UNSC Boomerang

The first BLACK division. Would serve as the basis for all future endeavors undertaken by ONISTO. Sadly, the ship and all hands were lost while operating in the Outer Colonies in early 2540. Information concerning the fate and final whereabouts of Aurora remains classified.

• ECLIPSE
    2549 -
    Cpt. Ethan Woods
    UNSC Memento Mori

The newest BLACK division formed in the months following the Siege of Paris IV.

• NEBULA
    2548 -
    Lt. Nick Fuller
    UNSC Laguna

An interdiction force operating in the Outer Colonies. Has participated in few large engagements, however, was present during the Battle of Verent during which the planet was glassed.

• NOVA
    2545 -
    2nd Lt. Taina Kohler
    UNSC Spyglass

Predominantly a scouting unit, this division is most active behind enemy lines in a vein similar to the UNSC Prowler Corps. Indirectly responsible for the UNSC victory during the Battle of Imber after alerting ONI to Covenant fleet movements. This warning allowed the UNSC a rare tactical advantage. New Llanelli was also implicated as a potential target, but Imber was deemed the more important of the two, thus leaving the colony substantially undefended.

• PULSAR
    2542 - 2547
    Maj. Thomas Deckman
    UNSC Caledonia

The most effective BLACK division with a 95% success rate. Was disbanded shortly after the Battle of Skopje due to substantial losses. Has remained inactive to date.

• QUASAR
    2547 -
    Maj. Ezekiel Kotze
    UNSC Salt the Earth

Formed shortly after the Battle of Imber. Commanded by Major Ezekiel Kotze, a veteran to both Imber and New Llanelli, and having shown an aggressive determination that has proven effective against the Covenant on multiple occasions.

• SEYFERT
    2540 - 2545
    Capt. Arnold Greenborough
    UNSC Kingdom Come

  • Kovac, Domaslaw (Brother, serving on UNSC Kronstadt)
  • Kovac, Bridget (Wife, serving on UNSC Tokyo Rules)
APPEARANCE:
Standing at 5’8”, Vjenceslav has a thin body. With some musculature he is easily over 200 lbs. A receding hairline of black hair, well advanced of it’s years, makes this impression a bit less terrifying and a prominent nose makes this moreso. Some amount of stubble exists on his face, as well, though Vjenceslav does attempt to shave often. A noticeable chin exists as well.
PSYCH EVALUATION:
Vjenceslav is a soldier and a survivor. Tenacious and willing to go the extra mile to get himself out of the battle alive, he doesn’t really have any qualms about self-derogation in that effort. By comparison to whatever else he’s done that was cakewalk and sunshine. Intelligent, he’s well-able to take stock of a situation, though Vjen still has the presence of mind to actually be able to do something once the situation has been assessed. Vjenceslav is not a religious man, inherently, though the fact that he keeps on being shot-at by Covenant and living has gradually turned him to the opinion that there most likely is a God and that he most likely heavily hates Covenant bastards. While not one to go to church he is not one to object to a prayer or two before combat.
BIO:
Born on Talitsa in 2514, in a colonial area so small it warranted only a letter and number (“We’re so poor we can’t afford vowels”) and with a population of less than a thousand, Vjen’s early life was pretty hard. You don’t really know it at the time, but he did go without a good deal of things. Toys were whatever your mind could come-up with, dreams and stories of dastardly bastards centuries before and history and pretending you were heroes in battles where there were no heroes, that was everything Vjen had done and more. He wrote stories, too, as a kid, little stories about little people with no more importance or prose than a dust-spot, yet that was a toy, too.

His father worked in mining and his mother in the schools. That was how it went. Vjen’s father would come-home to cough the dust out of his lungs at the dinner table, complain bitterly about the conditions in the mines, talk to officials about improving them. He was a small community leader, something of a union leader, and Vjen’s father had new, or rather old, ideas of how things should be run. He kept a book on Leon Trotsky, on Marx and the rest, and humored such ideas in private. Slawomira kept him in-check, though, sometimes threatening to leave him and sometimes threatening, almost humorously, to sell him a rope so he could hang himself. The UNSC, wherever they could, had begun to press-down on any sedition and any discontent, and that clamp worried Vjen’s mother. If they sensed the tiniest bit of discord, faux trials would follow, Insurrectionist uprisings after that, and then blood. All it needed was a match.

Needless to state, Vjenceslav was not comfortable staying in this poor community near his quite Communist father, and as such, at the age of eighteen, joining the Colonial Military Administration, the CMA. A hobbled organization, it was somewhat removed from the war he had heard had begun. The aliens were coming, they said, the aliens were coming and they were killing everyone. Vjen didn’t want to be a part of that, and so he joined the CMA. They would stay at Talitsa for no time at all. The 32nd Platoon of the Talitsa Militia was sent to Arcadia, aiding UNSC troops in engaging the Covenant enemy. The CMA force, valued not at all by UNSC commanders, was sent to hold a port position. They would not fare well at all, with 80% casualties and Alpha squad being completely destroyed. Vjenceslav survived by virtue of a shovel and a foxhole from which he held his position. He had four bullets left in his magazine, along with several dozen needler perforations in his upper arm. Vjen would sent to a field hospital, later aiding the UNSC Marines there when he was well-enough to hold a weapon.

After this, the Talitsa Militia was absorbed into the UNSC, due to, in part, the lack of it actually existing in terms of manpower and personnel. Vjenceslav was told that, now, he was in the damn Marines and that he had better like it, pretty boy. He was not very impressed by this change of pace. Then there was the long night, the time of two years of no enemy contact and itchy fingers. He would do little, the war becoming little more than a hope that you’d survive the ground and that the ship would survive to give you a ride home. Engagements became brief and bloody, jumping down to the planet on Pelicans before a brutal war, possibly of a month’s length, would commence, after which one jumped back onto that Pelican and hoped for the best.

Vjenceslav began to have nightmares, at that time. Nothing would really quell them. He became paranoid of having friends, getting friends, because every single one seemed to die. Jean, a Private he’d befriended, got her throat crushed by a Brute. Blake, another Marine from Earth, got his internal organs ruptured when a plasma grenade stuck to him. He became withdrawn, increasingly withdrawn, amazingly withdrawn. Some of the images from his time there showed that thousand yard stare in his gaze and every once in awhile he would wish that the one bullet with his name on it would come. Every once in awhile, he’d pray that it’d find him and never have the guts to show himself a coward before the others.

In his time with the Marines, his attributes were apparently noticed. One day, he was sent for, taken, and brought to Earth for training. You’ll look at pictures, they’d said, you’ll look at pictures and never hold a rifle. Welcome to the Navy, son, some of them said, welcome to ONI and welcome to Section I. When Vjen would ask why they’d say it was because of his eye to detail, his ability to see a situation and not be murdered by it. They said he could save lives, save a lot of lives, with that little thing. That was something he could get behind, saving lives other than his own.

He’d be transferred to the UNSC Tokyo Rules, a Prowler working intelligence over battlefields and in deep space, in 2536. Vjenceslav became the guy to look at readings, try to figure-out what was what, what was where, and what was coming when. He’d look at planetary images of battles, too, in real-time, trying to see their tactics. It was nearly always the same. They would try to murder the enemy, taking some item, before leaving and glassing it. Sometimes they wouldn’t even try that, just blowing-away the Navy and murdering planets. Welcome to the Navy, son, some of them had said, you’ll be saving lives. He started to not care about the poor bastards on the ground, wouldn’t even look at the numbers.

But he couldn’t get away from those about him on the Tokyo Rules, couldn’t get away from the rest of the crew, couldn’t dehumanize them no matter how much he could try. Vjenceslav would sit alone at the table, sometimes, alone in the mess hall. Talking to people? No. He was withdrawn, they’d said, he was odd and strange and had seen too much on the ground. The jokers said it was Marine Syndrome, that they were all brooding, but they always joked half-heartedly and never about Vjen. The more serious distanced themselves from him, keeping to their own cabals. The Prowler Corps was the Prowler Corps, the general view, the unspoken view, being that it was separate from others.

A week after he’d started, though, someone sat down with him. She was from Ballast, one of those Inner Colonies areas that was in the misty places of bureaucracy and insults, the places where you didn’t know whether to call someone a sellout and a UEG suckup or to call them an Outer Colony yodel. Vjenceslav didn’t really care, though, the first day barely talking to her or, really, noticing her. The next day, he noticed the scent of her perfume, the way it smelled like flowers back home, the way her voice had that South African tang of British and was like honey. The next week he relented to her, and learnt Bridget’s name.

They talked, and after a month, he laughed at her jokes. She was an engineer, one of the guttersnipes who worked on the Translight Drive. She rambled, sometimes raving, and her mind was like a forest trail with a million different paths one could just jump across, switching tracks with astonishing speed and never really staying still. To a degree, Vjenceslav forgot about the poor bastard on the ground. To a degree, he just focused on her. There wasn’t anything truly formal, at the beginning, but...they did get engaged in 2537, married on the ship in 2538. Yet even that wouldn’t last. Vjenceslav would be transferred to the UNSC Point of No Return, a stealth cruiser in the Prowler category, for reasons of meritorious service. It was a fine ship, but for obvious reasons something was missing for him. He and Bridget talked seldom and his service on the Point of No Return was not filled with excitement or adventure. He did his job and that was that. Due to his record, however, he was given a choice: To continue serving on the Prowler or to be reassigned to Section III for unknown operations.

In 2542 he would be assigned to PULSAR division of BLACK. No events were noted for this time in the official log. Vjenceslav would serve on the UNSC Caledonia as a forward observer for BLACK units, performing what could be described as his Section I job but ‘up close and personal’. Service was short-lived, in those situations, and he was often armed really rather poorly. A pair of binoculars and their digital analog were his eyes instead of a high-powered camera on the bottom of a Prowler, and a pistol or SMG was often his last line of defense.

Due to the events of Skopje, PULSAR would be disbanded and Vjenceslav sent to QUASAR.

NAME: GREENE, WYATT
BIRTHPLACE: NEW ALEXANDRIA, REACH
SEX: Male
AGE/DoB: MARCH 31st, 2511 (38).
FAMILY:
  • NAVY ENSIGN GREENE, HARRISON (BROTHER)
  • NAVY CAPTAIN GREENE, HANNAH (SISTER)
  • MARINE MAJOR GREENE, JASON (FATHER)
  • NAVY MASTER CHIEF HOSPITAL CORPSMAN GREENE nee FARKAS, ANASTASIYA(MOTHER)
APPEARANCE: Standing 6'1 (185.4 cm) and near 185 pounds (83 kg), Wyatt is remarkably average. Brown hair stays in regulation while a mildly out of regulation beard sprouting distinguishes Greene, at least until someone spots the prominent plasma scarring on the right side of his head. A set of rather 'dead' eyes make it clear that he's seen things no man should.

RANK: Gunnery Sergeant
PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT: 22nd Shock Troops Battalion (ODST), UNSC Marine Corps, Viery, Reach

SPECIALTY: Demolitions
BDU DESIGN: Haversack
SKILLS:
+ Stamina
+ Focused
+ Determined
- Overly Stubborn
- Emotionally Detached

PSYCH EVALUATION:Gunnery Sergeant Greene is notably apathetic in almost all situations he was exposed to. This may be related to the Massacre at Kholo in 2539. Resulting in the deaths of his entire platoon at the time, leading to his resultant transfer to the 22nd ODSTs on Reach less than a few months later. It may also be stacked along with the Battle of Circinius IV, in which Greene himself and only five others survived from the entire planet.

BIO: Wyatt Greene was born in New Alexandria, Reach in 2511, to a long line of UNSC servicemen and women. The middle child of the family, Wyatt still happened to remain in the spotlight of his parents with his siblings. While his Sister had already graduated, and his brother was yet old enough to enroll, Wyatt was shipped out to Corbulo Academy of Military Science. Unknowingly he would be one of the last attendees to the Academy. Thanks to the efforts of the SPARTAN-II Blue Team lead by Ingrid-045, himself and the rest of his squad (including one Thomas Lasky) to survive the events of the battle.

After a hefty number of ONI NDAs, he would enlist in the Marine Corps three years later, something that was both expected of him by his entire family, as well as his own realization that humanity would need a hell of a lot of soldiers in the coming years. He underestimated just how many would be needed however. Between 2538 and 2539 he only served in one major battle in the Marine Corps: the Massacre at Kholo. A battle in which the unit he was serving with were tasked with the destruction of vital information. His team in particular were tasked with scuttling the 'CAA Heavy Burden' housing a HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Mark II [D] armor system and several energy weapon prototypes. This was the battle which his extreme apathy and extensive scarring stemmed, his unit largely failed their objective, and they suffered over 90% casualties.

Since then he has served with the 22nd ODSTs, serving with distinction in several battles and engagements with the Covenant. Before eventually being transferred to ONI's BLACK initiative as a demolitions expert.

NAME: Cazenave, Gabriel
BIRTHPLACE: Serres-et-Allens, Meridian, Hestia System
SEX: Male
AGE/DoB: 32 yrs (2/7/2517)
FAMILY: Cazenave, Perrin (Father, deceased at age 61)
Cazenave, Julia (Mother, alive, age 59 - Meridian)
Cazenave, Sylvia (Sister, alive, age 30 - Meridian)
Cazenave, Avril (Sister, alive, age 27 - Meridian)
Cazenave, Laurent (Brother, alive, age 26 - serving aboard UNSC Oliver Cromwell)
Cazenave, Matthias (son, alive, age 3 - Meridian)

APPEARANCE: Standing at 5'11 and weighing in at 190 lbs, Gabriel is not particularly tall and looks slightly slim in comparison to many of his comrades. His medium-length hair is of a light brown color, while his eyes are hazel. A mildly rounded nose is the most prominent future of his face. Gabriel's mouth is stuck in a perpetual half-smile, which gives the man the appearance of being constantly in on a joke that everyone else is oblivious to. His complexion is tan, though not very, and there is still a youthful, boyish color to his face.

RANK: Lieutenant
PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT: -5th Airborne Regiment, UNSC Army (2539-2545)(Alluvion, Draco III, other engagements)
-SPECWAR/Group Three, UNSC Army (2546-2549)(Skopje, various other minor engagements)

SPECIALTY: Marksman
BDU DESIGN: Sharpshooter
SKILLS: + Legolas. Cazenave grew up in Meridian's rural frontier, where hunting game was often not only a hobby but a necessity. His upbringing combined with war experience has honed his marksmanship abilities to incredible levels.
+ Farmhand. Being used to long days in the fields and long hikes in the mountains, Cazenave possesses a high level of physical endurance. He can just keep moving, and moving, and moving. It has also helped him develop a relatively high pain tolerance.
+ Genial. Something to do with his smile, humor or optimism. People generally have a hard time disliking him. Generally.
- Country Hick. He grew up in a relatively low-tech environment. Fixing things and dealing with highly sophisticated technology is really not his thing.
- Inflexible. Cazenave is poor or at best mediocre when it comes to driving, piloting, or handling explosives or heavy weapons. He's just not very mechanically oriented.

PSYCH EVALUATION: Despite his long service record and myriad experiences of brutal combat against the Covenant, Cazenave has remained a bedrock of stability. His ability to remain steadfastly positive (but not annoyingly over-optimistic) is a great boon to those around him, helping (most of the time) to sooth frayed nerves. The sense of easy-going calm that he portrays can be infectious in all but the very worst situations.

BIOGRAPHY: Gabriel was born into a farming family on Meridian, a relatively recently settled moon of Hestia V. He grew up hunting game in the rugged northeastern regions where the Cazenave ranch was located, a childhood hobby that went a long way towards honing his exceptional marksmanship skills.

As he received good marks in school, Gabriel seemed on track to go to university, but as the war with the Covenant worsened he decided that it would be of far more use to enlist. In 2539, he filed into his local UNSC Army recruiting center. By then the war had escalated to such a point that his unit, the 5th Airborne, was sent to the front almost immediately after the new recruits had finished basic training. Gabriel got his first combat experience during the Battle of Alluvion, in which the 5th Airborne endured horrific casualties. In the end, the siege concluded with the planet's glassing. Only the remnants of the 5th and a few other Army units were successfully evacuated from the surface. Gabriel's company lost so many men that he advanced in rank more thanks to officer vacancies than any individual achievements.

From then on, the the under strength 5th continued to fight in a number of engagements throughout the Outer Colonies. Gabriel's skill with a battle rifle became apparent, and he received a promotion to sergeant after slaying two Brute Chieftains during a heated firefight in 2543.

In 2546 he was approached and offered a place in Special Warfare Group Three, directly subordinate to UNSC Special Warfare Command. Gabriel thrived in this new role, distinguishing himself in a number of lighting raids against Covenant forces that year.

While back home on Meridian during a period of leave, Gabriel initiated a brief romance with UNSC Navy Lieutenant Marie Goulard, a fellow Meridian native serving aboard the cruiser Steadfast. However, the realities of war cut short the relationship after a few months. They were forced to part ways when duty called once more. It was only later that Gabriel learned Marie had discovered that she was pregnant with their child. Later, she gave birth to a healthy boy, whom she christened Matthias. The baby was delivered back to Meridian, where Gabriel's sister Sylvia and her husband agreed to care for him until the couple could return from duty.

But it was not to be. The Steadfast was lost with all hands during an engagement against the Covenant in October 2547. Gabriel withdrew into his duties with SPECWAR/3, where he continued to perform admirably. A promotion to Lieutenant followed the Battle of Skopje, in which his squad was responsible for rescuing a besieged Marine company from a mob of Kig-Yar.

Since that ignominious defeat, the Gabriel's sense of loss began to finally wear away at his morale. However, a new opportunity presented itself. A new recruiter came calling, this time for a new special forces unit called Quasar, part of something called the BLACK initiative. The recruiter presented the job in such a way so as to make clear there was no 'BLACK Initiative,' not really . .

NAME: Shin, Chae-Won
BIRTHPLACE: Bounty, New Busan
SEX: Male
AGE/DoB: 28 - 2521
FAMILY:
  • Shin, Sung-Soo - Father (Dead)
  • Shin, Hana - Mother (Dead)
  • Shin, Sun-Hwa - Sister (Alive/Enlisted)
  • Shin, Dae-Sung - Brother (Alive/Enlisted)

APPEARANCE: Shin or Chae stands at approximately five feet and eleven inches when not dressed in full battle gear and weighs just shy of eighty kilograms. This gives him a slightly slim but athletic build. Shin also has a noticeable crescent shaped Hypertrophic scar on the right side of his head located just rear of the eye, this is the leftover result of a shrapnel wound caused by a stray piece of flying metal. Though not visible in full battle dress or even in normal outerwear, Shin possesses a tattoo of a serpent like dragon on the upper left bicep that wraps around to part of his torso, the Tattoo depicts a battle between the dragon and a great demonic figure.

RANK: Sergeant
PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT:
  • Battle of Bounty (168th Bounty Colonial Garrison)
  • UNSC Imperious Overture - Battle of Miridem, Sargasso - 21st Marine Force Recon Battalion
  • UNSC Pit Viper - Battle of Skopje - 19th Long Range Reconnaissance/ODST (SOC) Battalion

SPECIALTY: Reconnaissance
BDU DESIGN: Recon spec ODST Armor. Helmet equipped with MILINT acquisition package and hardened uplink module.
SKILLS:
+ Analyst. A sharpened mind can make all the difference on a constantly shifting battlefield.
+ Nimble. Quick on his feet, Shin can move like the wind and make little noise whilst doing so.
+ Practical. Shin can make the most of a dire situation with little more than an idea and a handful of ingenuity.
- Blood Knight. Longing for the rush of battle, the addiction to adrenaline can sometimes be a frightfully dangerous thing.
- Twitchy finger. Though trained and honed for forward reconnaissance and path-finding roles, Shin has room for improvement on the long range shooting side of things.

PSYCH EVALUATION:
(PSYCEVAL and polygraph test carried out by UNSC Dr. Nolan Mathers - 05/18/2549)

Sharp, self-assured and to the point. Chae-Won or as he prefers to be known, Shin is a dedicated individual when it comes to his work and carrying it out to the highest proficiency possible given the circumstance. From what i have gathered, Shin from what i can gather has very little regard for the worth of his own life and would rather put himself in the line of danger before anybody else, perhaps altruism or some misguided presumption that somehow others will think less of him if it were any other way. We did note a certain, almost 'unhealthy' affinity for the more tangible area of his work, however this is the case for many subjects acting in frontline, high stress military positions and the mood regulating medication given to most frontline combat troops should help keep this in check. No observable signs of PTSD or similar related effects.

We ran him through the standard polygraph procedure for all ONI personnel by the book. Everything came up clean including analysis into his background and close family, no ties to any known Insurrectionist or Separatist individuals or factions.

BIOGRAPHY:
Born on the appropriately named agrarian outer colony of Bounty, Chae-Won Shin or simply known as 'Shin', was the second child to grace the family a year and a half after his elder brother Dae-Sung. Shin was born and grew up in the populated mega-city of New Busan which as the name suggests, was a majorly Korean settlement and was one of the first placed to be settled when the planet was first colonized so many years ago. New Busan was not only a key industrial and processing center for the many outlying farming communities in the surrounding area, but was also home to the planets largest spaceport which made it a vital infrastructure hub for exporting its many foodstuffs to the nearby local colonies in the system, it was here that Shins father worked as an Electrical Technician, working with various civilian freighters and not too uncommonly, UNSC vessels that frequented the port.

Shins mother Hana worked as a doctor at the local municipal hospital as a nurse which made her unavailable most days, since his fathers work too, took up a large amount of his time, therefore Shin was minded by his grandparents for a lot of the time along with his brother, Dae-Sung. The two had a typical love-hate relationship and there was a youthful rivalry between the two as siblings tend to have, the pair did fight and scrap but they were also inseparable from a young age.

Shin had an unremarkable childhood for the most part. Though he was an above average student with an aptitude for mathematics and the sciences, other than that he was just like any other typical teenager growing up. Whilst his parents continued to work long hours, he found a job at a local butchery and began working to earn his own living wage and take the pressure of his ageing parents. Life was good, yet Shin longer for a less mundane future and was desperate to see life outside of New Busan, often dreaming about travelling the stars to far off worlds he had read about and watched in Waypoint Documentaries.

A career in the military was far from what Shin had in mind at first and was only encouraged by his brother who took him to a UNSC Recruitment event at the local college, Dae-Sung was training to be a Naval Corpsman and encouraged a doubtful Shin into joining the local Colonial Militia. Shin passed the aptitude and academic tests with flying colors but barely passed the physical, not being nearly as athletic or strong as his counterparts. Despite this he scraped past and completing his basic training and chose to specialize in Signals, eventually being assigned to a pathfinder platoon with a local garrison.

Now word of the Covenant had been around for a while, at first it had just been rumors or some made up fairy-tale that had caught momentum within fringe Insurrectionist groups thinking that it was the UNSC making up lies to strengthen their grip in the outer colonies, yet as world after world fell, it was a threat that could be ignored no more and soon every colony from Miridem to Mars was preparing for total war, Bounty was no exception. Shin began partaking in training war games to prepare for battle, but no amount of mock fighting could prepare them for the enemy that they were about to face.

A sight that would haunt his memories for the rest of time. A CSS Battlecruiser blotted out the very sun, casting a shadow hundreds of miles long across the golden landscape. The Fleet of Particular Justice had come. The initial defending fleet in orbit had been decimated and with their only orbital line of defense broken, the Covenant instantly set upon the surface by scores and scores of Phantoms, dropping off the first wave in what would be a total invasion force. New Busan was the first to be targeted.

Untrained and Unprepared in every way for such a terrifying enemy, over half the defending forces routed without even a shot being fired, command structure quickly crumbled which left pockets of defending units totally out of the loop without supply or reinforcement. Evacuation efforts were similarly hampered by the sheer amount of terrified civilians trying to push their way to any vehicle they could. Stampedes of people tried boarding any ship they could get their hands on, often being piloted by inexperienced civilians, many vessels failed to even leave drydock before crashing or exploding.

Shin was with his unit on the other side of the city during the attack, initially performing reconnaissance on enemy landing zones when all contact with their command was lost, leaving his squadron in the dark in enemy territory without a clue what was going on. After fighting their way back into the heart of the city, they found the rest of their platoon had either fled or had been wiped out and so the mission quickly became a fight for survival, luckily a few men managed to commandeer a police pelican and escaped to a nearby UNSC Frigate on the dark side of the planet which made the jump to Slipspace, darting around various systems to avoid detection before jumping to Reach.

By the time Shin had made it back to Reach, the news had come in about the complete destruction of Bounty. Shin was re-united with his brother and sister there but also learned about the death of his parents, their freighter was hit by a Covenant Banshee on takeoff and was lost with all hands being confirmed KIA. On Reach, Shin underwent more training and was eventually redeployed with a Force Recon Unit on the UNSC Imperious Overture where he saw combat on both Miridem and Sargasso, the latter being where Shin earned his prominent scar. A plasma grenade destroyed a Mongoose he was stood near and the resulting shrapnel carved a nasty gouge through his face, the damage however was superficial.

The 21st Force Recon took heavy casualties in the jungles of Sargasso and so, was re-assembled and Shin was assigned to the 19th Long Range Recon Batallion which had a detachment of Special Operations ODST's. Shin dropped into Skopje and was involved in heavy fighting both with UNSC defenders and far behind enemy lines in sabotage and asset denial missions, eventually Skopje was glassed and its battered defenders withdrew for the next fight.

Unknown to Shin, he had caught the attention of ONI who had been watching his performance since Sargasso, his proficiency in battle in addition to his capacity to operate independently behind enemy lines had landed him a position in a newly formed unit under the name of Quasar.
