Companio: The Awakening (IC)

OOC LINK

In the Princesspality of Spawn
'SPAWN DAY!' the banner read as it stretched across the front of a great tree fort just outside the ramshackled settlement of Big Tree which was shadowed by the mountain known as Thunder Point. A great bon fire was being prepared in the clearing as some of the dirtier residents emerged from their 'warren'- greeting a passer by with "From the ground to the ground!" merrily as roots where brought up for a communal stew. The great many of these resembled Lagomorphs or Rodent while those in shacks where more diverse. It wasn't the largest of settlements, with around 60 persons but it was a home none the less.

The Alliance
The Alliance was far more fortunate then the land of Spawn; it's streets gleamed, lit at night by the glow of electric lamps, and each home a module of it's own right. Pippoton was a great example of the average town. Named after Pippos, a small glowing Companio resembling a dew drop in shape, the town was proud of it's lighting system. The houses where of red and blue shades with metallic paneling and the town had been expanding with the aim of resembling a light bulb in shape. It was generally another pleasant day in a pleasant land but Numans where known for their adventurous spirit- how would they repopulate the planet if they didn't have a drive to travel to new lands?

Two weeks had past since Leaf last felt the touch of the sun grace her earthly features. That was the Inhumanoid's best estimate at the very least, having already lost her grasp of time. Maybe it has only been five days. Perhaps a month. Or maybe she wasn't even here at all but a nightmare. Truly that would be the most ideal saving grace from the unfortunate circumstances she found herself in.

Dwelling in this pitch black captivity, the air was dry enough to invoke a crisp burning sensation building up in her throat. The only thing worse than being deprived of sunlight was to also be denied water. After all the foundation of her body was composed of bark and leaves, which were now both is a serious state of deterioration. She remembered being able to move freely in the first few days of her imprisonment before her limbs gradually withered down to the point they were too hollow and frail to continue supporting her weight.

''Its said that our ancient ancestors, the Homo Sapiens could last only three days without water but up to three weeks without food. Quite an balanced dichotomy but at least 60 percent of our body weight is in fact a fluid of one kind or another.''

''Wh... who ar... who are you?''

''But with trees I've read the ratio's give or take, fifty-fifty of water and carbon. I wanted to see how far I could take these parameters with you. Afraid you've still disappointed me though.''

''What do... you want from me?''

''That is the question. Hahaha... Its simple really, I was hoping you could be my new Companio. Alas however, you couldn't overcome the conditioning. Even you're will to live isn't strong enough. You're a failure.''

''I'm not a-''

''You and the rest of your ilk call yourselves Inhumanoids, I know. But just because you have some of our DNA doesn't mean you're on the same standing as us. You're species are a filthy inbred mix of the world's animals parading around as if you have a right to exist without subservience to your masters. It makes me sick just thinking about it.''

''Please... just let me go.''

''At this point your leaves have been dried out, thus you can't absorb sunlight anymore. Even if I do let you out, you'll still die of the plant equivalent of starvation, no matter how much water you'd drink.''

''Water... water.... waa...terr...''

''My, my... a thirsty tree, literally begging me for water. Whatever shall I do...''

''WATER... WATER... WATER!

''I understand. Of course.''

Leaf never saw the face of her captor, but it had the voice of a young eloquent woman, most likely a Numan. Puzzled over this stranger conceding to her demand for rehydration, her confusion soon changed to an intense raw feeling of relief when she felt the soft and wet flow of water pouring over her parched shell. Without question she immediately proceeded to absorb it, feeling the rapid effects of elasticity returning to her face ad limbs.

''Not all plant-types are created equal. It seems most of you sub-types are without a doubt, living with absolutely no point to your existence. You're free to leave.''

She heard the sound of a heavy metal door sliding open and looked up to be greeted by a blinding white light. Slowly it illuminated her blurred vision to the steps to a staircase leading upwards. Her prison had been an underground vault all along and she summoned what little strength she had regained to crawl towards freedom, but not before tilting her head slightly to get a picture of her cruel captor. It was indeed a young woman in her early twenties, staring back at her with a dispassionate glare that only half acknowledged her. Whatever this sick experiment was for the Numan appeared to have lost all interest, much to Leaf's internal chagrin that she was too weak to express out loud.

Image

''Go on. Don't keep your parents waiting now, they will surely burst with joy upon seeing their daughter again,'' she spoke again, this time more tenderly.

Leaf's eyes were too dry to tear up but the thought of rejoining with her parents overwhelmed her with a new sense of drive to keep moving forward, fatigue be damned. Her Mama and Papa, how she missed them more than words could express. Never again would she wander the borders of the Princesspality unattended. May Spawn forgive her stupidity, may tomorrow embrace her with a brand new day where she could forget this and start anew ,may she grow stronger and wiser and learn never to let her guard down again.

''Oh and one more thing if you don't mind,'' came the voice of her captor again, this time with the coldness of before.

''AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!''

Something had etched itself into the back of her right shoulder, soliciting a sharp burning pain that momentarily shocked her completely awake. Breathing rapidly she struggled to maintain full consciousness as she continued making her way up to the exit, her limbs frantically rattling as the pain instilled her with terror and she felt afraid for her life. Desperate to make it out alive she only just managed to hear the woman's parting words to her:

''Tell Flower, Helvetica says hello.'' This was soon followed by a series of chuckling as Leaf pictured the Numan with a sadistic grin.

But as she got closer to the light, another figure made its presence known. A humanoid shape loomed behind her, standing well over two meters tell. It was like a ghostly apparition taking the form of a mummy, completely faceless and wrapped in black layers with one of its disproportionately long arms having reached for her where she had been grabbed. Feeling the terror swell beyond her control, Leaf found herself on her legs once again, this time running as if nothing could stop her. Whatever that thing was she couldn't let it catch her. She now remembered the day she had been captured, salvaging materials near the border with the Alliance for the Princesspality's upcoming festivities she heard rustling and was immediately engulfed by darkness.

Until now...

''I... made it... Mama... Papa, please...'' she felt dizzy and collapsed.

Gradually she felt the sun bless her broken skin after being denied it for so long. Her head was spinning and she noticed she had fallen against a soft bed of flowers. And for a moment the pain subsided into bliss. It was then she noticed the horrifying truth: a green fluid was leaking from her mouth and spreading out in a pool around her. The flowers began to vibrate upon contact and within seconds burst apart in tiny explosions. The liquid she was drooling was some kind of chemical agent that corroded plant life and she was its unwitting carrier.

The water she gave me... I was so thirsty I didn't notice it was... oh... no... no!

Feeling the backside of her shoulder, Leaf realized she had been branded with an insignia.

Of course, it was the Horde.

Except then she recognized it was actually the symbol used on Alliance banners. But it couldn't be, the Alliance didn't have a reputation of kidnapping and experimenting on Inhumanoids. That girl calling herself Helvetica had to be of the Horde. The symbol on her shoulder was to misdirect Spawn that the Alliance had declared war on her Princesspality. Leaf couldn't let this happen, she refused to be the Horde's puppet and have her family suffer for it.

Summoning the last of her strength, determined to right this grievous wrong against her and Inhumankind, she dug her finger into the mud and began to carve out a word. It was harder than she thought, the poison was immobilizing her and it was only through sheer willpower she kept going. With much strain and effort she carved out the first letter:

H

Before she could continue Leaf felt a sharp crack against her forehead and her eyes shot wide open as her face swelled up and burst open.

POP!

The black ghost stood beside what remained of her, its faceless expression marking a stoic and silent exterior, showcasing neither grief nor regret. Its tendrils wrapped around the ground while producing a much thinner thread that found its way back to its owner, to whom it was relaying the scene through the telepathic wire established between them. With no one around, the ghost then dematerialized, leaving Leaf's now toxic body to be found by the Inhumanoids.

''So the little tree tried to warn the Princesspality to watch out not for the Alliance but the Horde. Surely Flower will see through, although I do wonder if Spawn will reciprocate her judgement,'' mused Helvetica at learning of Leaf's pathetic last ditch effort as she already crossed back into Alliance territory. She did have a cover to maintain.

''Either way, until the Alpha Lord puts an end to them, this should prove quite... delicious.''

Located within the territory of the Princessipality of Spawn there was a Cave located outside the settlement of Big Tree. This cave was complex, extremely so, and althouh it looked natural, it was man made, well Companio made. Despite being complex, it is otherwise mundane in nature, apart from its occupant. The dweller in this cave is an Arkton, massive bear-like Companios, but this one is unique. He is one of the first Companios and one of the first of his kind. He had been sleeping a deep slumber in this cave for an untold amount of time, ever since he parted from one of the few non Companio he had become close to. However his slumber has ended, from deep within the cave a deep rumbling noise emerged as he awoke.

A large shadow descended from the cave, when the form emerged it was revealed to be somethign akin to a brown furred bear. The figure stood up, standing taller than most numans or other creatures. It's fur was tinged with a silvery grey in some areas, signifying the figures age. Despite its apparent age, it looked impressive, perhaps even more so than in its youth. The Arkton stood up and stretched much as a man would. Its joints popped and the muscles beneath its skin shifted impressively. His ears twitched, as the sound of revelry wafted through the air and made its way towards him. He took a position similar to a normal bear as he lumbered from the cave, towrds the noise, carefully.

From the Ground to the Ground had only one meaning, and it was fitting in this moment. It was a saying of comfort for the Innumanoids of Big Tree- to know where one came from, where one would return, and that life feeds life creating a constant cycle- in a way it meant that one had no worries. All is stable and part of the great mechanism that is the world.

Such words where uttered now by a green haired youth with brown robes and a stick- his eyes seemed to be completely that of the color alone, and his feat reptilian. He had around him a group of others like him- varying in features but mixed in form. Things seemed solemn till a great banshee wail emerged from near the Big Tree it's self- three men held the woman back as a man collapsed nearby- his fern covered head wilting.

A cot was being brought forth to move Leaf's remains and as it approached a countenance of worry came upon those that had gathered.

''You're an Arkton, aren't you?,'' said Helvetica making her presence known. Sitting atop a maple tree she eyed the giant bear with a newfound sense of curiosity. She had been meaning to inspect that unexplored cave near the Big Leaf settlement and was reasonably surprised at the sight of the Companio that emerged from it. Could this giant bear be the Arkton that escaped from the Horde all those years ago? And did it just come out of hibernation just now?

''Can you understand me?,'' she asked wondering how feral minded this creature might be. ''You'll be interrupting a funeral held during a national celebration if you keep going that way. ''

Strong and intimidating but it likely values solitude. Could be useful as my personal Companio. With its help I could deliver a swift and brutal blow against the Princesspality. But taming it will take too long and from the looks of it this creature has been around for a long time and won't just submit to anyone. In that case I'll have to see how it reacts to me first.

Ah... What a beautiful Pippoton! There must be no other town as peaceful, cheerful, and wonderful as this one!

But when this town is all you see for eleven years, all you want is a change of scenery.

It was another perfect day in Pippoton, but when every day is perfect, perfect just gets boooooooring.

That is how Marcus feels. Yeah, his parents went to hell and back to travel the unforgiving wilderness and help settle this place. Yeah, he's lived a pretty comfortable life with plenty of friends and the best companion a boy could ask for. Yeah, things might be a bit too comfortable.

So that is why Marcus is leaving. Today.

His parents were A-OK with it. After all, they did the same thing just eleven years ago. So he packed his bags with everything he would need: clothes, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and enough food and water to las him a month. Once he was out there, he was going to have to live on what the land gave him. Everything was set – except for his companion.

"Come on, Kanny!" Marcus shouted as he ran down the stairs and out the door.

But no one followed him.

Marcus had to flail his arms to keep himself from falling down the stoop. With a grunt, he turned around and looked back into the house. He was not surprised by what he saw.

In the corner of the living room, a small, white, rabbit-like creature lay curled up in its bed. It had wrapped around its neck what looked like a short, black cloak, with an electric-blue broach holding it together. Its eyes and the fur on its tail shared this shocking color, and its long ears fell down at the sides of its side. This is Kanilin, or Kanny, as Marcus calls him. He is Marcus' Companio, although Marcus cared for Kanilin more than Kanilin cared for Marcus. The lagomorphic Companio first joined Marcus in the last stretches of the Last Exodus, but since then, he's gotten a bit too acquantanced with the comort of Pippoton.

"Kanny, I'm about to leave Pippoton. You know, go out and see the world, and your supposed to come along" The Numan called out to his Companio, but all he did was turn around in his bed. Marcus sighed and went back into the house and up to Kanilin's bed. "Come on, buddy. We've been talking about this for years– well, I did most of the talking. All you do now is sit around the house. Let's go!"

Marcus knelt down and pet Kanilin until the Companio woke up with a grunt. Kanny turned around, looked up at Marcus, and in a soft, squeaky voice, said, "No"

"No?" Marcus repeared, crossing his arms. This wasn't going to get anywhere anytime soon. Kanny needed some motivation, and if Marcus had to give it by force, well... so be it. "Alright. I guess I'll just have to carry you" In a swift motion he picked the rabbit up and held him in his arms like one would an infant. Obviously, the rabbit did not like having his slumber interrupted. Kanilin fought back for some time, kicking and sending out small electric shocks with high-pitched "no"s, but when he saw that it didn't bother his Numan one bit, he just fell back alseep in his arms.

This was going to be an interesting journey.
What is a sig? A miserable little pile of words! But enough talk!
Have at you!

Arkton had been lumbering towards the settlement, when a figure made their presence known to him. He turned towards them as they spoke, while loosely paying attention to them he took them in. They were feminine in form, and had black hair, they appeared to be Numan, which could be good or bad, rarely had he met a 'good' Numan. As they finished speaking Arkton responded in a deep bestial voice.

"Yes I am. What do you want Little youngling? I have been around them more than a bit, so i am aware of their culture, to a point."

After responding to her he warily eyed the Numan. He had no real way of knowing whether this one was with them, it was possible. Regardless it would be a good idea for him to be cautious, he was well acquainted with the ways of the Horde, and loosely so with the normal more moderate Numans.

How intriguing... I think I understand now. This creature won't fight anything unless provoked and its clearly trying to surmise whether I'm a threat or just a nuisance. But I can see the weariness in its eyes. This bear has lived for a long time and won't be easy to control, at least not directly. Come to think of it, even though I'm standing above him he still looks upon me. I will have to rectify that...

''I'm just curious to know something. It must be sad waking up into a new era where the rest of your unfortunate kind has long died off. It seems Arktons value their pride above their lives, as the last of their kind didn't fare well in captivity. Their sentimentality for freedom it seems was their very undoing.
And here I've defied the odds and discovered the last living Arkton. Destiny it appears continues to favor me so. But you on the other hand? You may have chosen quite possibly the worst possible time to come out out of hibernation.
How does feel, knowing that you are fundamentally alone and disconnected from the rest of this world? That in a sense you're already long dead?''

She smiled, before leaping backwards and vanishing into the leaves. Maintaining personal distance from the Arkton was key to the next stage. Hoping that her words would distract the Arkton for at least a few seconds, two long black strands flew out adjacent to her shoulders and converged towards the Arkton's location. They merged together forming a fist and slammed into the ground below its feet. The resulting impact was so strong it formed a medium sized crater and a large cloud of soil obscuring the bear's line of sight.

Long black tendrils came together to form a two meter tall mummified humanoid shape that took a fighting stance raising both arms up. The black strands that formed the first inside the crater unraveled into a spiral shaped web and lunged forth at the Arkton's legs, intending to immobilize him. Meanwhile the humanoid shape wasted no time, stretching out its right arm to throw a punch aimed at the giant bear's forehead.

Will he counter Amonio's punch to avoid brain damage and let the net trap him momentarily? No doubt he's strong enough to tear it apart with relative ease, but even a second of distraction with the web will be enough time for the main body to knock him out.
Alternatively he could dodge both but I doubt his response time and agility are up to the task. Then again he is surely an experienced fighter. This won't be easy... I'd prefer not to kill him as he would make a more valuable prize alive than dead.

Just as the Numan finished speaking Arkton gave a dark self-depreciating chuckle. He was about to respond when her actions signified who she was with, them the Horde. Her words had brought some feelings to the surface, but now was not the time to be swamped by such things. It was at that moment that a strange Companio descended and took shape in front of him. Its impact shook up a large amount of dust, It swiftly took action against him. A large web shaped mass of tendrils was heading towards his front limbs while a large fist was heading towards his head.

Just as the tendrilled web was about to make contact with him he gave a loud deafening roar as he reared up. It impacted against the fist with an almost physical force, buying the Arkton a few precious moments. He then swung his massive paws down, extending his several inch long claws as he did so. They tore into the webbing shredding it, the webbing fell to the ground. As his body moved with his paws, the fist still on its trajectory moved closer and closer to its target, Arktons head. He extended all of his limbs, flattening himself, the fist thundered over his head.

He swiftly rolled to the size and ran a short distance at a surprising speed. He was not too far away, but far enough to give him a bit more time. He turned back towards the Numan and her Companio. He gave a heavy sigh as he finally responded.
“So you are one of them[i/] huh, a member of the Horde? Yes it is sad, But my kind can easily adapt, as we must. I have woken at worse times in the past, such as when you Numans first came out, and forsook the bonds laid for you. Are you sure you want to do this Little One? I have lived far longer than your race, your faction, and will most likely live longer still.”

As He finished speaking he stood up taking his full impressive height, easily dwarfing the other Companio by over a meter if not more. He made an impressive sight, standing fully upright. He gave the impression of an unmoving mountain, firm and sturdy. He extended his claws to their full length of several inches and they gleamed black in the light. As he waited he thought '[i]I wonder if she is right and i am really the last of my kind?

That roar... it's as strong as a physical blunt force. I could use that quite well...

Amonio's front half was shred open from the sonic impact but luckily with the Arkton fleeing it had enough time to regenerate.

''You will learn what you're place is in this era, Companio. Subordinate to mine,'' replied Helvetica, her gaze fixed upon the Arkton. He would not be allowed to flee her. His destiny was either to serve her and live or refuse and die. There could be no compromise. Victory was the only course of action, no matter what obstacle stood in her way. This creature had fought off the Horde before but it was unlikely to have faced off against a unique Companio like Amonio or someone of her caliber.

But... did the Alpha Lord ever fight this Arkton? If so then why wasn't he captured? The Alpha's Companio makes him virtually unbeatable in any circumstance... it doesn't matter. Once I have this creature under my heel and destroy the Inhumanoids I will gain the respect I deserve.

The shredded webbing threaded back into Amonio's humanoid body before it too unraveled and split into several long strands that flew after the Arkton. But rather than attempt to make direct contact, this time the strands used the environment to its advantage as it slid through various trees to form a entangled network of wires surrounding the giant bear. If the creature was trying to run away then Helvetica would literally restrict the radius of land available to him. It was difficult to form while the Arkton was still running at its high speed but its momentary pause to stand up and present its imposing height brought the Companio enough time.

''You're species was an honor bound race. So I will give you an offer: swear fealty to me and find your place as my berserker. You have no home or family to return to after all. Or predictably, refuse and forfeit your right to life.''

You will be beaten into submission. Pain will enlighten you of your place in my world.

Knowing the Arkton was too proud to submit that easily, Helvetica clenched her left fist tightly, giving the signal to her Companio. Amonio had encircled the giant bear and was now scoping inwards, literally tearing the trees from their roots and pushing them towards the center where the Arkton stood. Utilizing the forest itself as a weapon, a ring trees just as tall and imposing as the bear itself engulfed its target like the jaws of a predator.

Though he was angry at the Numan for her foolishness he gave her another chance. It was during this time that the Numan set her Companio to work. It winded through the trees, encircling them, before pulling then towards Arkton in the center. He gave a short sigh before he came to the realization that he would have to hurt and injure her, if he wanted to escape. As he watched the tree come hurtling towards him he thought quickly about what he would have to do. The Trees were banded together on the outside, so their bark and somewhat softer interiors were exposed and accessible to him.

As the Trees came closer to him he braced himself and tensed his muscles before he jumped. He was headed towards the upper part of the trunk of one of the tree. He gave a loud roar, shredding the bark from the tree revealing the softer Sapwood. He extended his clawed paws forward, tearing into it, they stopped when they hit the Heartwood, which was hard enough his claws could tear through it so easily, even with the extra momentum. It was then that he wrapped his arms around the trunk, as his full weight impacted against it. A thunderous crack resounded and the partially intact portion fo the trunk snapped under the force of over 2300 pound hitting it at high speed.

As the massive tree snapped it thudded against the ground, its weight more than double of what it should be. While the Numan’s Companio continued what it had been doing, Arkton stood up shakily, before stabilizing himself. He stood up and sniffed, smelling where the Numan was, he walked toward the heavily branched top of the Tree, tearing of a large log sized branch. He turned towards her position and ran forward before throwing the branch at her position. It impacted agaisnt the area she had been at, knocking her to the ground. As She recovered he broke off another branch and walked towards her. He raised the branch and slammed it toward her head.

The branch shattered as it impacted against its destination. As the branch shattered against the ground next to the Numans head bits of wood and bark flew everywhere. He then looked down at her and spoke. “This is your last chance Numan, leave and you shall keep your life and what little dignity you have left from being defeated by a lesser being such as I.” His last few words were tinged with obvious sarcasm.

I underestimated his sense of smell, he's pinned me down and any sudden movements on my part will result in death. But I can tell he's reluctant to land the killing blow. That will be his biggest mistake...

Although at first it felt like her greatest fear of losing control was coming true, it seemed this creature just didn't have it in him after all. Had she been put out of commission her Companio too would have neutralized. It was clear all she had really done was irritate him and failed to drag out the bloodlust she desired to see light up within its eyes. Despite being dangerously close to the giant bear she realized it was a mistake for him to turn his back on Amonio.

''Why Arkton, what strong paws you have,'' replied Helvetica looking over that the torn tree branches.

Amonio manifested under her sleeve, covering her left arm and extending forward tendrils extended from the fingers to reach the Arkton in front her. Immediately they gripped around his right the girl deliberately had her Companio dislocate her own shoulder, telepathically transmitting the pain over to her opponent. It would not injure him in the physical sense but the shock would be proportionally adjusted to the sensation of the Arkton crippling his own large shoulder. And that shock would hopefully stun him long enough for her to regain her footing. Maintaining distance was going to be more difficult now.

Without wasting another second, Amonio severed itself from the tendrils connected to the Arkton, knowing the bear would tear them apart soon enough. Taking advantage once more Helvetica's augmented arm readjusted her shoulder back to normal, the pain notwithstanding as it then clutched a lump of dirt and rubble on the ground and threw it at the Arkton's eyes, attempting to blind and further agitate it.

Springing back on her feet before the Arkton attacked her out of instinct, she used her Companio arm to boost her jump into the air and grab onto a higher tree branch. Bears were good climbers and this one was strong enough to simply knock her off, therefore she leaped from one platform to the other, attempting to make it more difficult to pin her down in spot one again. Amonio unravalled around her arm and reformed itself into another body on the ground. Lifting a large torn off branch, with great momentum it swung forward the makeshift bat, aiming for the Arkton's torso.

The minute the Numan acted Arkton realized that he had been a fool and there was no reasoning with this stubborn Numan. As He waited or an answer he was suddenly bound by the Numans strange Companio. He had never seen or faced anything quite like it before, though had seen a similar plant Companio before that fought using a mass of vines. It was far less nimble than this Companio however, and lacked the versatility and tenacity this seemed to have. The threads had begun to tear due to his struggles when it momentarily reconnected to him. A sudden intense pain assaulted him, akin to an accident when he was younger.

He had fallen from a tree and one of his arms had got caught in between the v of the tree and the arm had been wrenched out of place. Soon after the tree had fallen on him, the feeling of which was thankfully absent from this pain assaulting him now. As the other Companio detached itself from the Arktons bindings the pain caused him to lash out with his unburdened arm, shredding the threads binding him. His haphazard swing also block the dirt thrown by the Companio to get in his eyes, but it scattered over the rest of his head. He recovered just as the branch swung by other Companio was about to hit his torso.

Arkto twisted into the strike and let it move him, he was less injured than if it had struck him while bound, but still injured. As te strike made contact with him, he wrapped his uninjured arm around it and grasped it tightly. His body weight dragged across the ground, because of the force of the blow. The other Companio was moved with him, as they settled he tensed his arm around the branch and twisted his body before letting go. The other Companio was launched toward one of the largest trees in the surroundings; it was especially planted by him, to honor his former Partner.

The Tree even dwarfed the gargantuan figure that was Arkton. The other Companio landed a few feet in front of the tree. The Arkton growled as he popped rubbed the shoulder he was feeling the pain in. He rushed towards the somewhat prone Companio and stomped down on the thread connecting it to the branch. He then kicked the Companio away, closer to the Tree. It impacted against the massive trunk, Arkton shook the remaining threads off of the branch before it stalked towards the Companio. He hefted the branch as one would when throwing a javelin or a spear before he launched it towards the recovering Companio.

It impacted against its form and pierced through it and into the softer layers of the tree. It was into all that sturdy, but should hold the Companio. Seeing his move successful Arkton rose up and extended arms outwards as he let out a bestial roar. He then fell down to a position of all fours, before he sniffed to catch the scent of his prey; he faced her direction and started a limping gallop over to where she was.

The Arkton wasn't actually injured but the pain was real enough to make him believe he was. This had the desired effect of slowing him down without permanently harming him. Helvetica needed him healthy thus preferred to abstain from having Amonio inflict any grievous wounds. After all the giant bear was of no use to her if it was maimed and she was impressed by its resourcefulness and resilience against her attacks. If that power was nudged in the right direction this Arkton had the potential to be a formidable war beast.

But now it was time to change tactics: she was going no where by continually assaulting the Wild Companio and having him counterpart. Agitating him did not bring the Arkton's bestial side to surface as she had hoped for, thus the only logical recourse was to appeal to its reasoning. Watching the bear charge at her direction, obviously intending to knock her down again, she clenched her fist and then released it, giving Amonio the signal to unravel. At the same time she shrugged off the soreness in her own shoulder as she made a daring leap towards her target.

Amonio had been damaged and pinned against a gargantuan tree that must have stood for centuries and strong enough to withstand the impact that landed him there. Regenerating its humanoid body was taking time but fortunately it hadn't been torn to shreds. The undamaged strands that made up its current body unraveled out, freeing it from the tree as they reformed into various sharp thin strings. Merging together into a serpentine form they moved smoothly at an accelerated rate, catching up to the heels of the Arkton's rear legs.

Simultaneously Helvetica came midair into the Arkton's line of sight, letting herself be the distraction, her face ecstatic with exhilaration. This had been more fun than expected but it was now time to reinforce her ultimatum. Amonio's serpent form broke off at the mouth, splitting into two hands that tightly gripped around the Arkton's back ankles, briefly halting his movement. Timed just right, Helvetica landed against the bear's forehead and bounced off just as quickly, landing behind him. Her Companio severed itself from the Arkton once more and forming a protective encirclement around its master, rapidly regenerating and increasing density. If the bear attacked her the numan would be instantly shielded, allowing time to continue their current quarrel.

Mundeo wrote:Ah...

"That's so adorable."
"Quite!"

A woman in a grey blue uniform with black boots and a green vests and a kepi cap is present along the road that leads out of Pippoton posting a notification on a board just below the welcoming sign of the town;

NOTICE
As per Council Decision the Alliance Selim Mounted Patrol has been formed. Your community will now be hosting Patrolman Sylvia Wilford and her trusted Selim Candace- you are to provide what ever accommodations are necessary for your new protectors including and not limited to food, shelter, and medical assistance. Patrolmen Sylvia and Candance will travel frequently between Pippoton and Fritzburg. The force may yet increase in number in the near future as per Council Decision this program is in a testing phase and if proven helpful to the public shall become a permanent feature of our Alliance and symbol of our growing unity.
-The two are imaged below-

As the nail is finally secured the woman turns to the Selim and with a smile runs her hand across the bridge of her beak. Looking out to the town she notices Marcus approaching;

"Greetings!" she says cheerfully, "Traveling to Fritzburg?"
A light in casing is still a light.
Tomorrow is made today.
You can't stop progress, but you can direct it's course.

He was catching up to the Numan when he heard the other Companio start to recover. It slithered towards him in a snake like form, soon enough it reached his legs. It was at that time that the Numan jumped off of his head and landed behind him. He slowly turned once his temporary bindings were released. He realized her intentions had changed somewhat and his mind started to clear, the curious spectacle he looked upon that taking place in front of him, helped. The Numan had her Companio revolving around her, in a protective manner you could say; probably to fend off an attack should he take advantage of the close proximity between them.

He stood to his full height, the pain from earlier wearing off gradually, not it was but a dull ache, but a pronounced one. He gave an echoing chuckle before he responded. “This world is not as broken as you might think Little Youngling. Before my kind were helping to fix this world, but things changed since your kinds betrayal.” He paused briefly as gave a long somewhat mournful sigh before he continued his response, this time giving a laugh. “You say I will be forgotten? The Inhumanoids will remember me due to my near constant presence and the fact that I was once a Companion to one of their kind.”

“Your Horde will remember me for the trouble I have given them. As well as the fact that I have thwarted what do you call your leaders? Alpha Lords? I have thwarted being captured by at least one of your Alpha Lords. I only know of that one because that one compatriots were worried, and I may have faced more of them.” He paused to thump a fisted hand onto his chest proudly before he continued. “I am one of the First Companio, Eldest of the Arkton. The oldest of your kind are but cubs before me, what purpose could you offer me?” He stood there proudly in all his impressive glory as he waited for a response from the Numan.

Marcus - outskirts of Pippoton

"Hm?" Marcus turned towards the voice that called out to him. Kanilin was still fast asleep in his arms. On his way through town, a couple of people wished him good luck on his journey- everyone here is extremely supportive -but this is the first person to actually ask him something regarding his journey. A woman in a uniform asked if he was traveling to Fitzurg. At first, he wasn't sure how to answer.

'I never really set a place to go' Marcus thought to himself. 'I guess I never really thought about that in advance. The fun is in the journey, right? Maybe I should stop there, if it's nearby. Maybe I can get a map there, too..."

"Um..." Marcus hummed for a moment, then he said, "Yep! I am en route to Fitzburg! Yep, Fitzburg... which is down this road?"
What is a sig? A miserable little pile of words! But enough talk!

'Simple: to continue where you left off,'' she replied calmly gazing back at the Arkton's magnificent display of its very presence.
No doubt it still held her kind in contempt for what they did in the name of manifest destiny. She was indeed just one of many others before her who had demanded his allegiance to aid in conflicts that were intrinsically meaningless to this creature who had already seen and lived through the worst of times. If her plan to ignite war with the Inhumanoids were to succeed the Arkton's raw power would be a tide turner for whichever side it took. Which meant letting him live to aid the enemy would be a great hindrance to her plans.

''You've been asleep for a long time, haven't you? The world you have awoken into is not the same one you left,'' she continued, weighing in on her options to deal with the bear. If this just went back-and-forth she would have to get serious about killing him. The Arkton was too dangerous to be left alive but staying here too long would attract the locals. Which could be a mixed blessing if it meant getting to fight Spawn. Killing her would cut the head off the snake that is the Inhumanoid threat.

''Although you're ancient you recall the purpose of your creation: to help us rebuild. But Numanity is divided, aiding one side is akin to abetting another. The Inhumanoids are getting stronger and ruled by a despot who will if given the opportunity will wage war and expand their territory. And you don't have to take my word for it, I'm sure you already know this from experience.''

Knowing the Arkton had lived through many battles he was surely aware of the inevitability of conflict arising from one event to another. The Princesspality was ruled by an inhumanoid known to look down on numans. It wasn't too far fetched that it would eventually seek to displace them and steal their resources for her own race. Peace was a lie, the only truth in this world was power. And Helvetica wanted just that.

''Do you really want to be caught in the cross-fire again? Why not take preemptive charge, showcase your power to them, put them in their place, at the ground below your feet. We are all but children in your eyes whom you've left to do as they please, paying no heed to the path of death and destruction they leave behind. Perhaps its time to change that.''

''I want you to accompany me into the Inhumanoid Princesspality and put one little child in her place: Spawn.''

Indeed, with a creature as old as this, it could have been a King with a domain of its own. How could it opt not to use its power and reshape the world in his own image? But if she could get it into the Princesspality and trigger a confrontation with Spawn, it would surely result in the self-proclaimed monarch's death. And with her own Companio she could seize leadership and build her own army.

"Um..." Marcus hummed for a moment, then he said, "Yep! I am en route to Fitzburg! Yep, Fitzburg... which is down this road?"

"That's correct," beamed Slyvia with a smile, "Home of the Selim Association," she said putting her head upon Candace's beak, "It's a long journey by foot," She moved to the saddle bags on the other side of Candace, "and I wouldn't be doing my job without providing some essentials." She looked at Marcus's bags, "Hmm...." She pulled out a flashlight and put it back into the bag, "Hmm... I suppose," she said coming back into full view, "That some simple advice is warranted," She stood tall, "Stay on the roads and treat your fellow travelers as you your self desire to be treated." Her expression changed as she slouched a bit, "Though you not likely to make it to Fritzburg in a day- likely three, or five- and that's assuming one walks with out sleep and such isn't likely. Since you shouldn't sleep on the road it's self ask the Companio about places to rest, there is a clearing half way- but that's based on the distance a Selim can travel. If you do go far off the path travel to where the sun sets- your sure to find civilization that way."

Candance turned her head and reached into one of the saddle bags with her beak producing a map of some kind. Sylvia seemed a tad embarrassed, "Oh..." she said rubbing the back of her head, "Have a map, It's not the best- but it's a map."

The map was roughly palm size and seemed to primarily show some the road from Pippoton to Fritzburg- even had some settlement called Big Tree away from the roads and to the East of the primarily featured road. It was a shorter distance then Fritzburg from Pippoton. But also had no roads leading to it- and a fast open plains between it and Pippoton while the road was cut through the forest it's self. The map compass was nice- a Sun going to sleep in the West a Sun waking up in the East, a four pointed star in the North and an eight pointed star to the south.

Unlike before where he had laughed in response this time here was a growl evident in his voice. “Do not lecture me on my Purpose little Youngling. I have long since fulfilled it in a multitude of ways. “ He raised up a clawed paw as if to swipe at her and rid himself of this nuisance before he slowly lowered his paw and gave a long sigh. “However you do have a point, in that I do not which to be caught in the cross fire as you put it.” He backed up a short distance and paced back and forth for a short while, wearing a path in the dirt beneath him.

As he paced he thought, he thought about many things. Chief among them were whether her previous words about him being the last of his race were false. If they were true, he would have to leave this area and perhaps find another mate, to bring his kind back. Perhaps he could once again be a part of something larger, something more. Some of the Numans words had merit, but they were still really suspect. She was not a being that he should trust so easily, if at all. He stopped in his pacing to speak once more.

“I know that you are attempting to pander to my arrogance and confidence. You are not the first of your kind to attempt this, I have no use for power and Authority. Rather I have not had a use of it in the past, you are right that times are changing, or have changed since I last woke. The reason I have not hurt you or your kind in the past is because your death could or that of the others could cause unshakable animosity between I and them. That type of animosity breeds hunts, your kind has already hunted me enough in the past, I do not wish for more now.”

He gave a sigh as he turned back towards the Numan and continued. “You are right that I have lived for a long time, I have seen many things, Companiio that dwarf even I as well as the birth and release of your race. I have seen and met many of these Inhumanoids, they can be worse than your kind at times, but I also know how your kind is. Why should I trust you or your word?” As he waited for an answer from her, he simply gazed at her with his ancient golden eyes.

Marcus - Outskirts of Pippoton

With each piece of advise that the lady gave, Marcus nodded comprehensively in response. It wasn't anything he hasn't heard before: stay on the road, treat others the way you want to be treated... but it takes five days to get to Fritzburg? That really puts a damper on things... wait! She has a map! How generous of her! Maybe there'll be some neat landmarks for Marcus to see along the trail!

"Thank you" While trying to balance a sleeping rabbit with one hand, Marcus used the other to grab the map and put it in his pocket. "Yep. A map's a map. Take care, ma'am!" He started to walk away from the woman and down the path, waving to her as he did so. This was it. The beginning of a grand adventure!

Some hours later...

A grand adventure that is nothing but trees! Trees! Trees everywhere! Marcus would look to his left and what would he see? Trees! He would look to his right and what would he see? Trees! Nothing but trees as far as the eye can see! At least he caught sight of some wild Companios, but they were the same ones that he always sees around town: Risuns and Torales. Risuns are those little brown and gray rodents that you see climbing up trees, and Torales are those birds that always wake you up at six o'clock in the morning. Did those birds ever here of beauty sleep? Marcus also saw some bugs, but let's be honest, who cares about bugs?

It was also at this time that he felt some movement in his arms. Kanny was waking up. Hopefully we won't get too jumpy after seeing that he wasn't home... The rabbit looked up at Marcus with those big, blue eyes of his.

"Finally awake? I hope you enjoyed the nap, 'cause we're in for the long haul" Marcus said to his Companio. At first, Kanilin didn't know what his Numan meant, and then he looked around him...

With a frightened squeek, Kanilin jumped out of Marcus' hands, kicking with hands down with intense force. The rabbit landed back on his feet, and started to look around him, turning this way and that in a panic.

"Hmph. Don't be so scarred, Kanny" Marcus said in a gentle yet exasperated tone, getting on his hands and knees. "There's nothing to be afraid of"

'At least not yet'

After a few moments, Kanny finally looked like he was calming down. Thank goodness he was quick to adapt; maybe those ancient Companio instincts of his are finally kicking in. "See? Nothing to worry about"

Marcus sighed. "But I wish I knew where we were, and how far we are from Fritzburg... the map! I forgot about the map!" In this moment of obliviousness, he reached into his pocket and found nothing. Then, he reached into the other, and felt a piece of folded paper. Here it is! He took the piece of paper out, unfolded it, and held it out in front of him.

"Any landmarks around here?" He mumbled to himself. "Anything that stands out? Anything but trees... huh?" He noticed something on the map. What's this. Big... Tree? Well, at least it wasn't a normal tree. Wait, that's not it. The icon for it looks just like the one for Fritzburg and Pippoton. It must be a town! And it was closer than Fritzburg! Marcus can head there much sooner than he would on his previous location, and then head to Fritzburg from there. After all, seeing every town was a part of seeing the world.

But the lady said, don't delay! Follow the path and never stray!

Kanilin seemed to agree. "We're not going to that place, right?" He wimpered. "I just got used to the road, and the forest looks scary..."

"Then we will have to brave it!" Marcus asserted with intense enthusiasm. "My parents forged their own paths, and so shall we! It'll be okay, I'll protect you. Let's go"

Without another moment's hesitation, Marcus walked right off the path and into the forest, and Kanilin, with no other option, followed close behind.
What is a sig? A miserable little pile of words! But enough talk!
Have at you!

Helvetica's shoulder twinged slightly as the spark of anger erupted within her. The Arkton's resolve was as firm and solid as its imposing stature and it wouldn't be talked into helping her. Perhaps it was simply too aged and senile to desire power, as the young woman was perplexed why such an evidently strong Companio would prefer to idle. Such a dull and tedious existence of eating and sleeping was utterly incomprehensible to her and she was getting annoyed of being continually looked down upon by a Companio, a race specifically engineered to serve Numans.

Perhaps if she hurt it just bad enough to destroy its pride and put it at her mercy, the creature may then out of shame agree to serve her. But it would be a difficult task as the Arkton could shake off most wounds Amonio could inflict thanks to its considerable endurance. If it could fend off the Horde's armies and multiple Alpha Lords then continuing to take it on alone would be suicide. If Amonio could latch itself around the bear's throat and choke it into submission then she could win. But at this range the target could see it coming and her companio would be torn off before it was able to adjust its density. Therefore to defeat the Arkton and, at least in her mind, win control over him, she needed him distracted for a stealth attack. An ancient and legendary Wild Companio would take effort to capture.

''I understand,'' she said conspicuously raising her arms up surrender. ''But you will see the error in your judgement not to take charge. I shall leave to your rustic lifestyle, as short-lived as it may be. Only a matter of time until you realize I'm right.''

Amonio disentangled itself from the encirclement and moved under Helvetica's sleeves where it disappeared from view. She would need to replenish it after this fight as well as plan for how to best use a giant bear in her fight against the Princesspality. Lowering her arms she kept her eyes fixed at the Arkton, keeping prudent watch over its movements whilst staying still. After almost a minute she sighed and took two steps back.

I will have to bring the fight to him...

One of the loose threads left behind from Amonio's original netting slowly made its way under the bear's left foot, snaking around its huge ankle, where it remained hidden among the Arkton's hair follicles. The thread was so thin it was virtually unperceivable to the naked eye but it safely implanted there it would be easy for Amonio to detect the bear's presence regardless of distance. Its two parts functioned independently but could still sense each other's presence. This way the Arkton wasn't truly going anywhere Helvetica couldn't follow.

Arkton gazed at the Numan as they came to a final decision regarding this foolishness. He could see that they were upset with him, but such things were to be expected from the self-entitled cubs. He lost most of his wariness seeing her drop her Companio shield. He listened to her words attentively and nodded at times. As the caution and adrenalin left him he felt twinges over his body, among them an awkward feeling on his rear left paw. He shook the feeling off as such things weren’t unfamiliar to him during or after aggressive breakdowns of negotiations.

He spoke wearily for a brief amount of time. “Thank you for your understanding Little Youngling. Though my way of life may be short lived, the choice is still mine to make. I have put fighting behind me long ago, probably longer than I think. You may be right, but the choice is still mine to make as of yet.” As he finished speaking he backed up slowly a short distance before he turned. He just as slowly walked over to where the tree he had damaged was. He the largest part and hefted part of it on his shoulder before he started walking back to his Cave. All the while he kept his attention on the Numan, in case her attitude got the best of her.
