Even attacking the Republicans would be a far better use of his time though. Not a bad idea, but just so many better alternatives than attacking the Democrats.

I was imagining most people, at least right now - considering the recession and everything, are more concerned with the economy than anything else. Couple that with the Treasury Secretary holding a town hall...

Although widening the ravine between the Progressives and Democrats isn't all that bad of an idea.
If you want the Progressives to be a permanent kind of party, you need to give them a geographical area they can rule in, and the left coast is what's best for that, which means stamping out the Dems there. You'll also really want to try to cut away the splitting of the vote if he wants to survive.
