I tried to learn both German and Russian, but I gave up on the latter and put the former on hold.

I tried to learn some German in school (it was either that or French or Spanish), but I just gave up because TBH I don't think Middle School and High School are really effective places to learn a language.

But hey, at least I can look at a sentence in German and, like, vaguely grasp some of the basic words and concepts.

As someone who had to take Mandarin Chinese in Singapore thanks to my Chinese blood (the Singaporean government is quite big on the whole "learn your mother tongue" thing), I can safely say that, at least here, the lessons seem more like the results of a "How to Kill Interest" championship. The only reason I am even fluent in the first place is because, like Japanese, I use Chinese on a regular basis at home and outside school in general.

(On a side note, I like to impress people by reading out long, invented German words like "Nationalistischesdeutschesschwerionenforschungsgesellschaftsdirektor".)
