You said it makes no sense how I got my Caribbean land before the Japanese and I'm inclined to agree so would it make more sense to say we came over and took it in the early 1300s? When we already have access to Japanese technology and ship-building techniques?

Yeah, but you were still kinda recovering in multiple ways including your pop, but yeah, you'd have to take the land after the Japanese came, and after you recover to the point you stringed your society back together to the best of your ability. Then you have all that land you need to redistribute and use, which your population hardly does in 1310,'let alone 800,000 in 1350. I have more people in French Juresulem with less space than you have in your entire country. You have more land than the Aztec, with 5 million people, and 200,000 people in their capital. Just saying.

Lol. We have a fuckton of land, but hardly anyone lives more than a day's ride from these cities.

National pride you could say. Also, the Mayans see themselves as a kind of rival to Japan. Of course, it would be the equivalent of Canada trying to rival the USA but it's still how they feel.
