History: The Old Swiss Confederacy was established in 1315 and continued on until 1798, where it was turned into the Helvetic Republic. In 1712 the Toggenburg War was fought between Zurich and Bern, Protestant cantons, along with the Protestant subjects of Toggenburg, against the Catholic cantons. It was simultaneously a civil and religious war, and ultimately shifted the power from the Catholic cantons to the Protestant cantons. However, the cantons in general brought equality of either religious preference before the law, and gave religious freedoms. During this long period Switzerland was generally France's ally, although the Protestant cantons sometimes vied for the attention of Prussia. Ultimately, in 1777, the alliance was renewed with favorable terms for Switzerland, such as the recognition of Switzerland's independence. There was a rise of a certain form of nobility in these years. Switzerland was a hotspot in the Age of Enlightenment, with Leonhard Euler being the most notable scientist. The writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau during his stay in Geneva sparked a flood of tourism to Switzerland.
In the 1790s the Revolutionary Wars of the French, the French and their Republican armies began charging eastward, and by 1798, Switzerland was overrun, with little resistance from the Swiss people. Soon after the Helvetic Republic was set up, abolishing feudal laws and any sovereignty the cantons had, as well as limiting freedoms of worship. A rebel army marched against the French, but established a truce. The Helvetic Republic frequently experienced coup-attempts, and it largely required the French army to help maintain control. It was made so that the local populaces of Switzerland would have to support the French soldiers, which bore down on the economy, and Switzerland was no longer a neutral state. Austria, Russia, and French armies repeatedly fought battles in Switzerland in 1799, making Switzerland another battle-zone against Napoleon, with the Swiss refusing to aid the French or the Helvetic Republic. By 1802, instability grew to such an extent, and the Helvetic Republic was so much in debt, that it eventually collapsed. The Act of Mediation restored the confederacy and removed the central government.
A delegation of the 19 cantons met to discuss writing a new constitution in the Tagsatzung (Long Diet), but were largely unsuccessful at deciding. Sending a delegation to Vienna for the Congress of Vienna, Switzerland ultimately gained a few new lands. With the resurgence of Napoleon, the Swiss were inclined to let allied powers through Swiss lands, and the Swiss and Austrian armies besieged a French fortress near Bern, which had opened fire on the city. Soon the Treaty of Paris came around, and Switzerland was heavily affected. It received some financial compensation and a small land gain, but it also received the recognition as being a neutral state by every European power. The Tagsatzung met to come up with a replacement constitution, and the cantons began to restore feudal rights and such in 1814, and there were many rebellions against these laws. In 1815 the Tagsatzung got re-organized by the Federal Treaty. The Federal Diet was overtaken by the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland, a liberal party, that came from majority Protestant cantons. They drew up a new constitution with progressive measures and increased centralisation of government, but were also anti-Catholic. The majority Catholic cantons reeled from these measures, and formed the Sonderbund in 1845. The Catholic cantons ignoring several calls by the Federal Diet to disband the Sonderbund, in 1847 the Sonderbund War erupted.
The largely rural Catholic cantons were at several automatic disadvantages at the beginning of the war, and soon the Sonderbund had lost. The victorious Potestant cantons invited the Catholic ones to reform the federal constitution to be more like the American one. The Jesuits were expelled from Switzerland, and the central parliament now decided on national matters. In 1848 Switzerland assumed a federal constitution because of the 1847 civil war.

Nationstates Name: Orson
Group Name: Manifest Destiny Party
Flag (Optional): MDP Flag
Governing Ideology: Democratic on paper, but has autocratic tendencies in practice
Movement Type: Nationalist, revanchist, far-right political party
Leaders: Chairman Gerald Hudson
Territorial Claims / Occupied Areas: Strong bases of support in the unincorporated American territories and rural areas in the U.S. proper, as well as several major cities in the U.S. proper. Their headquarters is located in New York City.
Population: Approximately 1,000,000 official members as of 1870
Personnel: 50,000 people are employed in the "Security Operations" wing of the MDP, and they are tasked with providing security to important party members, local party offices, and party rallies.
Point of Divergence (if any): 1863, end of American Civil War
History: The Manifest Destiny Party was founded by Gerald Hudson, a former major general in the U.S. Army, in 1864. Hudson greatly detested the way the war ended and the fact that the Confederate States had been allowed to walk away with their independence. Hudson argued that the army had been "stabbed in the back" by the U.S. government (especially the Republican Party), and blamed them for completely botching the war and allowing the great American Experiment to be shattered. The Republicans proved to be very unpopular in the 1864 election and fell into obscurity; seeking to take advantage of the new power vacuum, Hudson put together the beginnings of the MDP.
Hudson was greatly inspired by the idea of manifest destiny (which the party is named after), which was a belief that American settlers were destined to expand across North America. Hudson expanded the original idea, claiming that it was the United States's "manifest destiny" to reconquer the rebellious southern states, restore order, and re-establish itself as the predominant major power in the Americas. Hudson was also a strict Abolitionist, believing that slavery was a cruel and evil institution and that it should be permanently abolished. The Party gained extraordinary ground over the next six years, winning many seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate, winning hundreds of state upper chamber and lower chamber seats, and even state governorship's. By 1870, it was one of the main dominant political parties in the United States, filling in the void that the Republican Party had left.
The MDP first attracted disgruntled soldiers who supported Hudson's stabbed-in-the-back legend, but later expanded to the middle and lower classes (including African Americans) and some of the upper class, as the MDP supported policies that would end the economic depression in the U.S. and help the common man. The MDP's party platform would also become more extreme over the years, with Hudson and his political committee using the threat of the Confederate States as an impetus to gain more support. The MDP also began to engage in clandestine projects to further weaken and divide the people of the Confederate States; for example, they have been providing clandestine aid to the Underground Railroad, and are even rumored to be funding terror attacks and slave revolts in the South.
The MDP's hatred of Southerners has grown to be so extreme that they support open discrimination against any Southerner in the U.S., believing them to all be "traitors" and "enemies of the state".

The MDP's hatred of Southerners has grown to be so extreme that they support open discrimination against any Southerner in the U.S., believing them to all be "traitors" and "enemies of the state". Furthermore, the MDP now not only wants to abolish slavery, but grant equal rights to all African Americans and put them on equal footing with whites.
