Are the Tarly's really a powerful house? I mean they're only marcher lords like the Dondarrions, Peakes, Carons, Swanns and Selmys, and I can't remember them being mentioned as a especially powerful, the only stand out thing I can think of is their Valyrian sword.
EDIT: And they don't even have cool title like the Carons (Lord of the Marches)

They are primarily powerful not perhaps due to their resources, but through the leadership of Randyll Tarly. I would put them as one of, if not the most, powerful Marcher Lords.
That being said, they pale in comparison to House Hightower, who couod be considered the most powerful non-great family.

What about the Rowans. They aren't as powerful as the Hightowers but I believe they are one of the most powerful in the Reach. They have a lot of land and are called Marshals of the Northmarch

Of all the 5 most powerful Reach Lords, aside from the Tyrell's, I put them in this order, generally.
Hightowers
Florents
Redwynes
Tarly
Rowans

i think that while Randyll Tarly is an extremely capable leader, their house means nothigpng until the War of Five Kingdoms

A Wiki of Ice and Fire says that "One of the strongest sworn houses to House Tyrell," and that they have "Rich lands and a strong keep.

Maybe if the Hightowers and the current High Septon get into arguments, I can create an Anti-High Septon to try and usurp power of the High Septon!

Would House Hightower still be interested in a possible Humfrey/Arianne match?
