My president asked Assad if they could have an informal meeting at the Olympics. Mostly to gauge Assad's interest in more cooperation between Syria and Iran, probably including a mutual defence agreement and open market including several other middle eastern states. Unfortunately other than Iraq and Syria none of the states I want to approach about it are player controlled at the moment.

Following the victorious 2009 refferendum that started the process of forming the Northern Italian Federation as a separate entity, a new wave of Sardinian separatism has swept through the island. Local separatists had used the opportunity to form a temporarily unified front for the independence of Sardinia compromised of all pro-independence parties of different ideologies. Both the regional election of 2009 and the provincial election of 2010 were won by the separatist bloc by a fair margin. It has been proposed for the island to join the newly formed North Italian Federation, but the proposal was turned down by separatist politicians. Instead Sardinians opted for full independence, which was finally granted to them in 2014 after extensive talks with the Italian government. The Republic of Sardinia was formed as a unitary parliamentary multi-party republic, subsequently the United Sardinian Separatist Bloc dissolved and the country's first ever elections were held. The socially-democratic government has successfully stabilized Sardinia during its four year term and is now awaiting for reelection, hoping to enact further reforms. The next election is scheduled to be held in April 2018.

Following the 2006 Canadian Federal Elections, under the new Conservative Government led by one Peter MacIssac, Canada underwent numerous changes. The Canadian government, and by extension the military were much more transparent. Actually publicly addressing key issues instead of publically denying them. Staying true to their promise, the CPC government boosted military funding and veteran's aid programs. While boosting military funding, they also encouraged Canadian citizens to enlist, filling the many of the crucial civilian positions like equipment procurement, and project funding, as well as many unfilled soldier positions. While gaining applause by the international community for stepping up and staying true to their promises, this move was heavily criticized internally and externally, citing that PM MacIssac was a warmonger trying to imitate the US war economy.
While in power, the CPC under MacIssac was also geared towards separating the Canadian dollar to oil prices. While oil was crucial in the modern world, there were other countries in the world much more capable at producing oil that could flood the market and tank the economy. Instead they focused on Canadian businesses, IT and raw materials like minerals. On top of this, successfully negotiating numerous free trade deals, and phasing out pennies.
Following the 2015 Canadian Federal Elections, the CPC became the opposition to the Liberal Party of Canada who won the majority. The CPC losing due to a lack of confidence, and an ever receding economy. Under PM Philip Mann, the LPC would vow to work on Canadian infrastructure, the middle class, aboriginal relations and the environment. With the Afghanistan mission over, the LPC vowed to move the military away from war and into UN Peacekeeping.

One paragraph history of your character: Philip Mann was born in June 27th, 1980 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a child he detested politics, thinking it something of a bore. He wanted to an athlete, skier to be exact. To say that he was influenced by his parents was an understatement. Them being instructors themselves, they took him skiing every winter, building up his talent, and confidence. After university, he continued to practice/teach skiing. The end goal was to become an Olympian, which he did. In 2006, he participated in the 2006 Winter Olympics for team Canada in cross country skiing, bagging a silver medal for Canada.
Unfortunately his sports career was short lived. While training for the next Olympics, he was severely injured in a skiing accident. His injuries too severe to continue sports, he looked at other outlets. Looking back, he found his disinterest in politics, and prodded at it. In his prodding he found numerous social and economic issues plaguing the nation. With a new purpose, he entered the world of politics. Using his five-minutes of fame well, he brought to light social issues in Canada, and the world. After a solid four years of building up support, and popularity, he ran for prime minister in 2015, and won a majority government.
