Not like owning Sicily is incredibly nonstrategic unless Russia owns the Dardanelles. Nothing will get to Sicily in wartime and the island will end up surrendering before the warships even leave Sevastopol.

That assumes that the warships are stationed in Sevastopol. Using Sicily as a naval base could be extremely useful for Russia.

Then it leaves the Black Sea relatively undefended.

The strait would be blocked off and no supplies would get through from Russia proper anyways.

"Relatively" still allows for the use of air power, and the Black Sea is small enough, and Russia-surrounded enough that they can keep control of it. The Dardanelles work two ways, you can't get a battlegroup through their unmolested

Besides, you are assuming wartime. It's most useful in patrols and projection in peacetime.

A poor way to think of it, putting many naval assets in a place that can be starved out is not wise.

Why is Mexico getting ignored by Cuba? We are an ally which mostly supported Cuba during the Cold War.

Given the extreme suddenness of the annexation, lack of any popular input, distance, and foreign assets there, it is perfectly reasonable to assume that Panama broke from the attempted union.

It's reminiscent of when Panama broke from Colombia back in the 19th century.
