History: The winds of World War II and the resulting new order in Europe caused massive chaos in the Belgian Congo, one of the largest European colonies in all of Africa. As Belgium lost it's independence, it's grip over it's African colony weakened, and an independence movement, the Congolese National Movement, formed. This movement grew more and more powerful as time went on, and finally, in 1950, the tide turned and the Belgian colonial rule was disestablished in favor of the new Free Republic of the Congo, with Antoine Gizenga as the new President and de facto leader of the country.

The nation was soon to destabilize, as many opponent revolts began to plague the country. Katanga attempted to break away from Congo, but their efforts were soon stopped with a military intervention. A large portion of the Congolese are leftist sympathizers, too, and this led to the formation of a guerilla communist movement based in the east of the country, the Simbas. The army of the Republic has so far managed to defeat the communist insurrection, but they are regrouping in the jungles, led by Patrice Lumumba and Pierre Mulele, and Congo looks less and less stable by the day...

I guess, I'm under the assumption most of them declared independence following Nazi control of France, and France was to weak to try and get them back, but Algeria was close and nearby, and much easier to maintain.
