Appearance: Standing at 1.91 meters and roughly 89.36 kg, he carries himself with a mild-mannered reptilian grace. This can either attract people, or repel them.

Character Occupation or Specialty: Starfleet Lieutenant. He is apt at piloting and repairing most starships. Anywhere he can work with his hands and with people is the best place to put him.


Character's biggest strength: Well trained and determined, Asklat adapts well to new situations and works well with others. His open-minded nature enables him to see both sides of the argument, and how to find a new solution.


Character's worst flaw: His own internal insecurities, mostly about contributing to a larger group or making a positive difference. At first you might not think of him as a timid person by how he is doggone determined to return to his home universe, but when not being flung into other dimensions, this is his MO. He genuinely wants to believe in the best of everyone, so he can be naively trusting and seem wishy-washy in regards to interpersonal affairs. However, in line of duty, he will reluctantly sacrifice either himself or his crew in order to achieve the goal. Just so long as said goal is greater than the closeness/amount of lives lost, and those incidents are few and far between.


OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

Primary Objective: To return to his native world. As he was flung into this world after unearthing a great conspiracy, he wants to return as quickly as possible to spread the news.

Failing that, he will always search for a place to belong. Almost all of his life, he has been trying to find a group where he can truly be himself. He once thought that was in Starfleet, but now, he is unsure. This dynamic between fighting for the preservation of the group or his place in a group versus being honest to both himself and to others is a consistent theme in his character.

Take up an art (either painting, sculpting, poetry/writing, playing a musical instrument or acting)

Acquire an occupation (he’s out of a job at the moment)

  Power Level: 2.5
  Strengths: At a young age, almost all Cardassians are trained at a young age to resist mental indoctrination. Further honing this discipline with telepathic students at Starfleet Academy, Asklat is able to withstand mental probing such as Vulcan Mind Meld or Betazoid probing. On top of that, he is able to withstand more mentally stressful situations and keep a cool head. As such, it is very difficult to extract information from him, mentally control him, or inflict PTSD upon. No matter if it comes from a machine (computer sucking his brains out), biophysical (Vulcan Mind Meld or Jedi Mind Trick), or chemical (mind-altering drug).
  Weaknesses: However, certain energy enhanced means of persuasion (read as: Magic) seems to be the way to sneak past this otherwise sturdy mental defense. A magic spell would be able to occupy his mind, or even control him begrudgingly, but Asklat would know that his mind would be controlled. Nevertheless, this would be a good idea to temporarily distract him for a quick counterattack or escape. Magical potions (depending on the amount of “magic” cast upon the substance) also receive mixed success, as his body is able to detect and work on flushing out the chemicals (although, it will certainly give him an upset stomach and migraine). As always with mental manipulation, less is more. While you might not be able to wholly control his mind, subtle spells and suggestions and good old fashioned persuasion might do you good.
  Restrictions: This is a purely defensive move, Asklat is unable to tell precisely who did the mental manipulation (in terms of magic or other long distance means), when, where, or how it’s happening. Also, when Asklat experiences large amounts of trauma or mental indoctrination (for example, if a Ludovico/Clockwork Orange technique is pulled on him), his mind will shut down and he will have barely any recollection of the incident until days later. So sending him to the Brainwashing Cult™ as a victim would not be a smart move. However, sending him to the Brainwashing Cult™ as an undercover member would be more successful, as he is able to withstand the mental traumas of whatever torture the Cult™ has planned, with one or two moral qualms.

BACKGROUND
(Be detailed please. You must explain how your character acquired their skills, talents, abilities, and special items. Wrap your primary objectives and goals into it.)

Education or Training: Self taught mechanic further enhanced by Starfleet mentoring (Bachelor’s in Engineering in terms of degrees of experience, or a Master of Science), five years of interstellar piloting and diplomatic missions for Starfleet.

Character Background/Biography: Stardate: 37667.141, an ordinary day on Cardassian occupied Bajor. A son was born to two upper-middle class Cardassian colonists, almost the third generation of the original Cardassian conquerors. The reason why he would be “almost” the third generation was due to another seemingly ordinary revolt by the enslaved Bajorans. An uprising that would kill the boy’s parents. A group of Bajoran freedom fighters would discover the wailing Cardassian toddler beside the charred manor, and discover his name: Asklat Rejal. Like many displaced Cardassians during the war and after Bajor won its independence, Asklat would be raised as a “war orphan”, and in the culture of the Bajorans. Sadly, like many atypical orphanages, not much funding was available, so Asklat had to learn to work at a young age. Thankfully, he found himself apt with machinery, and ever curious for knowledge of life outside of Bajor. He would often frequent librarians, Bajoran priests, offworld relief efforts, and offer his expertise in repairing or upgrading machinery in exchange for tidbits of knowledge and records about space and other worlds. Sometimes he was seen as charming, sometimes as naive, sometimes as a nuisance, but always would he persist. At night, the young Cardassian would gaze up at the heavens whenever smog wasn’t there, and point out the stars he learned from his books, and the planets that orbited them. If he could not, he would lay his eyes on the orbiting Starbase where he hoped to work one day, the starbase known as Deep Space Nine.

That day would come to him when he was 12, when he smuggled himself aboard the Starbase and remained hidden largely from most of the residents aboard Deep Space Nine. There he would work several odd jobs at the local Celestial Cafe and at the Bajoran Temple before attracting the attention of fellow Cardassian Elim Garak, who in turn directed him to the Constable Odo. The Changeling constable noted Asklat’s mechanical aptitude, and between them the young Cardassian learned much. From Garak, he learned about his heritage as a Cardassian, from Odo, he learned how to believe in himself and how to work with others. For once, Asklat found a place he could call home. Perhaps he would even go so far as to claim that he had found a family. War came once more and the “family” was parted briefly, despite the Cardassian boy’s sincerest efforts and pleas to stay aboard, even when it was occupied by the Dominion. It was in Asklat’s best interests not to stay aboard, as he would have seen the uglier sides of his family, and even discover Odo’s connection to the Dominion. He would have seen Starfleet’s paranoia, it’s rigidity, it’s hypocrisy. Once the war was over, Asklat came aboard the starbase for a final time, for a new chapter was about to begin in his life. The young Cardassian had expressed interest in sending an application to Starfleet Academy, but Garak disagreed. “Cardassia needs you.” the Cardassian Tailor stated “Someone with your experience and my tutelage would yield not only a Cardassia healed of the scars of war, but prosper as well.” Citing the hypocrisies that his beloved Federation had committed during the war, both aboard Deep Space Nine and across the Federation, Garak hoped to turn the young boy into his pupil for political advancement in the now ravaged Cardassia. Running to the Changeling constable, he demanded to know the truth, and to not be treated as a child any longer. Odo was silent for a moment, and confirmed it all. On the verge of being disillusioned, Asklat demanded to know how could he, how could anyone serve a system that does not enforce the ideals it espouses. The Changeling’s answer was at first simple, but then grew. Odo asked on how Asklat came aboard this starbase, his own hopes and desires. How the young Cardassian would find joy and hardship, learn and mature, never once flinching an opportunity to better himself, no matter how difficult the situation may be. Finally, he cited Newton’s Laws of motions, on how “the only thing that inhibits your ability to make a change in this world is yourself, and you’ll eventually inspire others to do the same. That is how you change this universe, one small step at a time.” After a few days he came to a decision, and invited his two mentors over to a Cafe for a long chat.


The three parted ways. For good this time. Odo went back to his homeworld to help reform his people, Garak went to rebuild Cardassia. Asklat went to Earth, after successfully enlisting in Starfleet Academy.


Even with the recommendation of three war heroes and Asklat’s talents, life at the Academy was not easy. Once more the Cardassian found himself alone and an outsider, as the war did little to improve his species’s reputation. However, it was also here that Asklat built his character and his core skills in the grueling training. In preparation to a post war Starfleet, he needed to exemplify the physical and mental traits of a successful officer. An ability to plan, as well as improvise. To know when to be diplomatic, or more direct. Knowing when to stand on his own two feet and when to consult others. Above all else, to obey and uphold the ideals of the Federation. This final part would be the most obvious issue that Asklat would face amidst his peers and himself, as tensions between students of different species and origins would often butt heads with one another. The war between the Dominion and the Federation didn’t mend rifts between different star-faring nations, or even inflict new gashes of their own. It merely widened the scars, both seen and unseen, between people in the galaxy.

Graduating among the top of his class, the Cardassian boy was now a man officially. He quickly found himself aboard the Medici under the command of Captain Hugo Hernandez. The Medici’s, to patrol, explore, and ferry supplies and diplomats among the Cardassian and Romulan neutral zones. There he saw the scars left behind by the war, and mended them whenever he could on whatever mission he was assigned. His hard work did not go unrewarded, as he quickly jumped from a lowly cadet-ensign to a Lieutenant and pilot of the Medici over the course of her first five year mission. Along with helping the populace of war-scarred worlds, Asklat underwent another project. At first, it was merely reading up about...odd missions that Starfleet ships underwent. But it wasn’t the whispers of vanished starships snatched by unknown forces or tales of hidden treasure laced with the curses of betrayal. It was the ridiculously mundane missions, more specifically the timing of said missions. Romulus was destroyed in a nearby supernova gone unnaturally awry. Almost seven years prior, a rogue Romulan attempted to wipe out all life on Earth, but was stopped before he could reach Federation space. Since then, an unusual increase of trilithium shipping, a material could reverse nuclear fission and theoretically collapse a sun. These questions would gnaw at Asklat’s mind, but he internalized his doubts in favor of accomplishing the duties of a Starfleet Officer. Eventually, Asklat enquired to the Captain, near the beginning of their redeployment about not so much of his discoveries, but rather what one would do when confronted with circumstances similar his. Hernandez responded with cool professionalism, that petty disagreements and minor casualties do not outweigh the dream of a society better for all. That society, or goal, should come first. Taking those words to heart, he discovered the opportunity to do precisely that.

The Medici was redeployed, this time to the distant Gamma Quadrant, along with a Klingon vessel. The two allies convened once arriving to the unexplored swaths of space, a gesture of goodwill and happy hunting, and Asklat was invited aboard. The Cardassian lingered, stating that he was interested in keeping touch and comparing notes with the engineers, and Captain Hernandez consented, surprisingly. There he laid bare his concerns to the Klingon captain, and provided the evidence he compiled. Stating that he could not in good conscience ignore the all too blatant “coincidences”, however, he could not also blatantly risk court martial by openly confronting the Federation about their transgressions, so he enlisted the help of a neutral third party, the Klingons. As soon as it appeared that the Klingon captain would consider helping Asklat, an Ion Storm occurred, blocking the scanners and nearly coating the Klingon vessel. This would normally be a startling inconvenience to any seasoned starship crew, until Asklat was mysteriously transported off the ship.

Now, the Fates deem that his particles not be scattered to the void of space, and that he has a purpose in this wonderland of mortals and magic. Wherever “here” is...

Making the most of being thrown into a vastly different world filled with magic and mayhem, he steels himself to return home. If he doesn’t, the secrets that he’s uncovered will die with him. The secrets that will ultimately determine the fate of a galaxy.

Honest, humble and honorable, this quiet Cardassian works well with others. Resolutely discovering new means to solve problems whether mechanical or logistical, he is a valuable ally and his high moral standing makes him a worthy foe

Generally, the app is sound, but there's a few details that need to be looked over and amended:

1. Garak didn't have any pupils or underlings to guide. Ziyal was about as close to one and that was a mentor/relationship mix that ended in tragedy.
2. Odo similarly did not have given he was too busy trying to bust Quark, pine over Kira, or explore what it meant to be 'a solid'.
3. Most importantly, it is the canon facts. Unfortunately it won't work as my character follows what's already been laid out by the franchise up to Nemesis, not a divergent of it, and the events following the novels after it (e.g. Romulus wasn't destroyed).

Feel free to TG me if ya want to help with the editing. The idea of a Cardassian among the Residents would surely irk Mezran to no end
