So I'm kinda out of the loop big time; what has happened that I am missed oh so much on?

In IC, meeting broke up, though some people are still chatting among themselves.

Ah I see.

Also, I looked back a page to see that there are some missions(?) that are in need of people for different reasons, no?

Well that's nice to know.

So I believe that I can have Henry do some training if it's possible. Kill two birds with one stone (Mind your flag).

Just peepin' in for the first time in a while, kind of amazed to see this is still going! If you'd still have me, I might finally have the time and space to actually contribute this time.

Min posted a helpful video on the Madhouse OSF. After some considering, I'm passing along its link as well as my own input on it. Happy gaming!

Min's video: "One Shot Campaigns"

My input:
"Or, hell, letting somebody else GM so the GM can actually play." Truer words were never spoken.

Thanks for the video, Min. Several tips stand out, and I've added my own commentary here:

1. Theme. Decide upon it before you begin. Figure out what players are into. If you don't know, ask them. (PbP players tune out if not interested, by the way).

2. Plot hooks: you need a good, strong plothook. You don't want them wandering for half the story, wondering what they're supposed to do. In PbP formats, that initial wandering can stall a game for weeks. Frustrated, with interest waning for both players and GM, the entire story falls apart. Grab their interest early. The technique he recommends - something large that can't be missed, and that gives your players no chance for anything but swift response - is a technique I commonly employ.

We can see the difference between an explosive plot hook and the "player wandering" issue by looking at PL's last two IC thread kickoffs. In Epic, players were hit right away with the Fiends. Everyone scrambled. Posts flew. Holy hell rained down upon their characters and they rose to the challenge. The play didn't lose speed until the GM (that's me) got pulled away for real life problems. Players stalled themselves with "feelings" conversations and planning. In contrast, the Demens Chosen IC kicked off with the world's most incredibly boring meeting. Players were left wondering what they needed to do. This was the fault of the GM (that's me). Through no fault of our own, our exciting kickoff was fettered by the project lead CoOP's untimely illness. As OP, it's my responsibility to, well, take responsibility. Epic fail adventure is epic fail, and soon to be corrected. Might even start a new IC (rare occurrence) to rekindle the energy.

3. Design a solid Big Bad. You want the climax of the story to be worth the effort.

4. Make the Big Bad and other elements fit the theme. (Make it challenging, but not insurmountable.) What resources (manpower, traps etc) to they have at their disposal? (I'll add this: your character is NOT the star. If your story involves them rising to a challenge and overcoming the Big Bad while the other party members serve as an audience to their greatness, you're doing it wrong.)

5. Design a middle. Figure out key NPCs that can provide information/resources. Be flexible. No plan survives contact with players. The party is supposed to meet the NPC upon entering a clearing, but the part circumnavigated it? Don't be rigid. Don't pout and demand they change their posts. Don't railroad them into the clearing. Think of a reason for that NPC to meet them elsewhere. Be flexible. Adapt, improvise, and overcome.

6. Design some challenges that are tailored towards each PC's abilities. Let those players shine for a moment. In PbP, focusing on just one character can leave others with nothing to do for several RL days/weeks. You have to balance it to keep the group engaged. This is where your OOC thread comes in handy. The other players love to show off their knowledge. They'll pipe up with all sorts of advice for that player. Encourage that discussion. It keeps things interesting for the group.

7. Give them a chance for loot, resources, experience, and more. Design in some locals that tie in with the story. I consider these GM gifts. You know that a player has been craving a helmet for his fighter. He's engaged in your stories, has worked hard at char dev, and helps the group. Repay his good efforts by offering him an unexpected boon. It's no skin off your nose to design something that allows him to gain it without detracting from the overarching story. Reward and praise - two things players love getting.

8. Starting off techniques: I'm in agreement with this video. Don't just start off with "everyone meets in a bar". Prior to starting the game, find reasons for the characters to know each other. Or give them a reason right off the bat. In one of my games, I started the characters in a lab. They awoke to the odd rumble of generators dying, and found themselves trapped together in a padded room. Each had a tag in their ear (the sort used to catalog animals in the wild). They had to move quickly, and forged bonds with each other while escaping from their predicament.

9. Keep it moving. Use your elements to nudge them back on track. Introduce an NPC earlier than expected, for example, or give a new clue. The video suggests using atmospheric elements to increase tension - a storm, a sound, a smell. This doesn't always work in PbP. The GM can't use their voice to stir player emotions. Instead, it's based entirely upon your ability to convey tension in your writing, and on your players' reading comprehension skills. This is why I tend to forgo lengthy posts in favor of an attention-snatching, brief paragraph with easily digestible nuances.

The sole post: They stumbled almost blindly through the deep, black forest. The dense and gloomy leaves gave them brief glimpsed of faint glows as the rain drops shifted each leaf. The moisture filled their nostrils with damp. Boots squelched through muddy earth. They tread on, cautiously and sometimes caught by surprise by spooky and mysterious noises coming from all directions. Suddenly something big and dark flapped across the path, startling a few of them into shock and almost fear. It's only an owl, which now sits on a high branch, cooing loudly as if the warn others of their humble presence. The party sighs and begins to move again, and then unnatural and ringing silence envelops the world around them.

As a brief aside: do not let your players write out every action as you transition the group. You're the GM. Players grant you limited license to control their characters. Move them collectively from element to element. It keeps the tempo and allows the story to flow. Also, you should never assign emotions or actions to one character. Instead, introduce elements to the entire group (They tread on, cautiously and sometimes caught by surprise and startling a few of them into shock and almost fear) that give your players the privilege of tailoring their character's unique reaction (Ulgarth could sense his friends' tension. Each new noise made him grip his sword more tightly. When the owl swept from the gloom, he drew his sword by instinct, and then almost laughed at his foolishness. He sheathed it, and then gasped as total silence broke out. Oh shit, things were about to get real! His lips parted in a whisper, "Guys? I don't have a good feeling about this!").

Notice how my "player reply" is as short as my GM post? Sometimes short posts are necessary in order to maintain the atmosphere. Don't insist on large paragraphs. Usually three lines do the trick in tense situations.

As he says in the vid, these techniques aren't just for one-shot stories. These work well for any kind of story, including a major campaign.

"Ho, shit, Cer. GMing is a lot of work! I have to do all that?"

You should. The game is your responsibility. Your players contribute to the story. It's a group effort. However, they are blind without your vision, and they will flag and falter without your guidance.

/Cer rambling

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

PERSONIFICATION LIFE
CHARACTER APPLICATION 2.0

PLAYER INFORMATION
NS nation nickname: Dance, Dancy, Dancy-wance, or Dan

Skill Level (beginner, intermediate, advanced): Intermediate. I can write eloquently, just not often. Don't expect me to clog up a whole page on writing about gnawing on a piece of toast

How often can you post? Daily, but as these are rigid standards of RP-posting, perhaps one or two posts per day.

CHARACTER PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Character First Name: Darth

Character Surname: Drathen

Character Title: Sith Lord

Character Gender: Male

Species : Trandoshan

Age: 29

Appearance: This face with these robes; Standing 2.13 metres and weighing about 96.62 kilograms. He's much lankier than one might initially think of such a behemoth, and carries himself with an inquisitive, but refined grace. As far as clothes go, he prefers plain robes due to their mobility, and as most other forms of clothes are either too baggy or too tight.

URL to Character Picture, if any: Lol whoops, I already described him to you above.

Character Occupation or Specialty: Most likely helping repair or fashion any piece of equipment, or studying to teach subjects such as engineering.

Character's biggest strength: His ability to learn and adapt, yet remains grounded in the moment so he can solve most problems.

Character's worst flaw: His natural distrust and suspicion towards people he doesn't know personally. However, he disguises this as an aloof demeanor.

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS
(REMOVE THIS SECTION
Primary Objectives are what drive's your character's actions and their part of the plot. When not engaged in stories, these are what occupy your character's thoughts or keep them busy. Examples include: acting on a desire to become a powerful and respected leader; attempting to overcome some horrible thing in the past which hinders the character on a day-to-day basis; seeking to break out their shell by overcoming profound shyness (getting involved with stories); comping to terms with a major flaw that inhibits the character from reaching full potential; etc.

Minor Goals. These should be an undercurrent for your character when they are engaged in stories or on their free time. They are what your character does to aid them in achieving their Primary Objectives. Examples include: acquiring weapons and becoming proficient with each one; improving sundered relations with a companion; improving their reading comprehension; mastering news spells; researching a cure for a plague; etc.

Objectives such as "making friends" or "finding love" are NOT acceptable. Please put much though into your character's objectives - they are what flesh out your character and one of the most important aspects necessary to portray the character as 3D. REMOVE THIS SECTION)

Primary Objective:

Minor Goals:

MUNDANE SKILLS
(These do NOT require points. These are the average, daily things your character can do. Examples are "drive a car", "speak one Foreign Language", "play a guitar", "write poetry". Some mundane skills come from your bio and are freebie. A soldier has gone through Basic training. However, Medic, martial arts or sniper would be a Specialized Skill or Talent.)

    List Mundane skills here
  • College Bachelor level of knowledge in terms of Engineering and Machine Reparing. While one may argue that this is a "specialized skill", I figured this combined with education would be a sufficient rationale?
  • Knife Throwing
  • Stealth/has made it a habit to walk near-silently.
  • Observation
  • Elo Score of roughly 2300, which means he's very good at coming up with strategies quickly in games such as Scrabble or Chess.
  • Driving vehicles

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND TALENTS
(These are specialized skills that set you apart from the average person. You have 7 points to spend here, no more than 4 points in each skill or talent. Examples are swordsmanship, sniper, coercion, medic, spellcraft, piloting helicopter, manipulate water, etc. You must take a skill pertaining to a supernatural power if you plan to use that power.)

  • Ability 1 and Points Spent: Combat(Armed and Unarmed) (Sith are wont to stab each other in the back, as such he combines grappling, graceful kicks, and a defensive lightsaber style to quickly subdue an opponent) (1)
  • Ability 2 and Points Spent: Machinery (He's a fixer upper, and at times a test pilot. Though he much prefers making his own upgrades rather than following a set of instructions) (2)
  • Ability 3 and Points Spent: Diplomacy/Eloquence (From mediating arguments between who parked where to convincing you to hand over that last slice of cheesecake) (2)
  • Ability 4 and Points Spent: Da Force (2)

OPTIONAL SUPERNATURAL CHARACTERISTICS
(You have 7 points to spend here on supernatural skills or abilities, no more than 4 in each. Sonic Scream, Levitation, Shape Shifting etc. Superman MUST have his kryptonite thus weaknesses are things which inhibit the ability. Restrictions are what can't they do with their power or what balances it. They can only use it when they genuinely need it? They can't use it for more then five minutes without serious side-effects? Some things are allowed without points. A pegasus has wings thus it can fly: list wings. A raptor is fast thus no points are spent in speed: list speed and give us its stop speed. These "natural" abilities should be listed here. What isn't allowed: teleportation beyond a few feet; the ability to alter or go back/forward in time. IMPORTANT: You need a knowledge in Specialized Skills and Talents in order to work these abilities. Example: you'll need "manipulate water" to do just that, and this section is where you record what water manipulation abilities the character has.)

  • Ability 1: Telekenisis
    Power Level: 2
Strengths: All Force Users can typically use the Force to lift up objects and move them. An example of this is when/if Drathen is forced to use his lightsaber, he uses the Force to spin it at high speeds at a safe distance as a whirlwind shield. An ability almost exclusive to the Sith is the use of Force Lightning, only used when a Sith calls forth is most primal aggression upon a target. Most times he uses it to aid in his crafting. Another useful ability the Sith has is the Force-choke, or rather, he uses the Force to grasp the trachea or internal organs of an opponent.
Weaknesses: Yslarmi, pesky little plothole beasts of the Star Wars universe that create energy bubbles that seemingly sever the User's ties to the Force. If said bubble buggers aren't around, then a broken concentration or another Force/Energy Manipulator can overpower his grasp. He can only manipulate five objects (roughly the size of a potted tree) at the same time with precision. Larger objects require larger exertions of energy. As for Force Lightning, the voltage/severity increases with Drathen's rage, and can be also countered by an equal/more powerful energy wielder.
    Restrictions: See above.

  • Ability 2: Shatterpoint
    Power Level: 1
Strengths: As the name implies, he is able to find the points where an object or person is the weakest, and by pouring the Force into it, shatter them.
Weaknesses: Plot Wanking invincible armor of the Mighty MacGuffin, or if someone manages to alter the shatterpoint or moves it just out of Drathen's reach.
Restrictions: It's a fairly new skill, and one that only works when Drathen's concentrating and has his hand on the object for maximum effectiveness.

  • Ability 3: Force Rage
    Power Level: 2
Strengths: By channeling his inner hatred and pain, he is not only able to survive and lash out with animalistic fury, but due to his Trandoshan heritage, he is capable to withstand and even heal otherwise critical injuries.
Weaknesses: It's a glass cannon, and lasts only for a little while before he passes out.
Restrictions: Only a last minute trump card. Due to his level-headed nature, he rarely uses it, and if you're fast enough, you will be able to avoid it. Hopefully. Or just hit him harder.

  • Ability 4: Far Sight/Force Sensing
    Power Level: 2
    Strengths (what it does):
    Weaknesses (what counters it):
Restrictions (limitations or other factors that hamper it/the character):
MAGICAL OR SPECIAL ITEMS
(If it's not on this list, your character doesn't have it. Magical items are rare and hard to come by. Please list what they can/can't do - treat them like a supernatural thing. Items not allowed: anything that can alter time; anything that allows a character to teleport beyond a few feet. Magical items have 7 points to spread among all of them. No items may be over 4 in power.)

List:
[*] None
[*] Available
[*] Unless
[*] You
[*] Count
[*] This
[*]

EQUIPMENT
(This is what your character has on their person at the very moment when they are pulled from their home dimension. Laptop? Firearm? Cigarettes and matches? Don't abuse this. They won't be clutching an entire bunker. You have 7 points total to spend on magical items. No single item can be more powerful that 4.)

List:
Lightsaber

BACKGROUND
(Be detailed please. You must explain how your character acquired their skills, talents, abilities, and special items. Wrap your primary objectives and goals into it.)

Education or Training:

Character Background/Biography: (Please write this in first person. Have your character tell us their history, their sorrows, their triumphs, etc. Be as detailed as possible.)

OTHER GAME MECHANICS
URL to Apartment Picture and description: LINK TO IMAGE
(What's the inside of their apartment look like. Note: no balconies, please.)

Link to RP examples: (this MUST be a DIRECT LINK to your IC post in an RP, NOT a link to the RP thread itself. If you don't have examples, make your biography good.)

IMPORTANT FINAL STEP:
Cool and collected, this Sith Lord has found himself flung outside the galaxy he knows into the meddlings and madness of Gods and Mortals. Steeling himself to whatever comes his way, and tinkering on whatever he can get his hands on, Drathen attempts to make the best of the cards he's dealt with.

The nickname you go by on NS: Dancy
Character Name: Darth Drathen

Dance, the application is incomplete and not in anyway balanced regarding character abilities (the satirical detail notwithstanding), it will be denied.

No. You can run something similar to, but not the actual character. Even so, you'll need to balance the Soong-type Droid accordingly and fit within pre-existing PL canon (mine, as I run a Trek character).

TNEL! Who are you planning on running? We're more-or-less limited to two chars currently.

Also, guys... I have been kind of out of it, and I'm sorry. I'm trying.

Come to the light side.  We have teamwork, waffles, popcorn, grape juice, and way too much ramen.

Unless one is a genealogist, therapist, geneticist, or FBI agent - who is acting within the scope of their job - to claim that anyone is wrong about their own identity is not merely absurd but also extremely rude.

You're doing alright, Fvaar, no problem. You matter to us. We don't mind when you have off days and feel out of sorts.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

Well, looks like we'll launch on Friday. Make sure to wrap things up. From what I'm hearing, he's going to start a new thread since... well  ... my absence fucked up the energy at the IC's start.

It's okay Swith! No one could have predicted that would happen to you, it's nobody's fault. And we're a determined group that'll stick together through anything rough and tough, this was just a minor hiccup on the launch pad, we'll be on our destined way in no time. :D

Sal and Truth, sorry if the reply seems abrupt, but given we're going to advance ahead Friday, I'm excusing my chars until that time. Your chars are free to do as they like, but keep the Friday happening in mind as noted above.
