Equipment: As the ZAX AI of Raven Rock, he has complete control of Site R's functions and nonorganic security in his digital hands. Otherwise he has... nothing. Not having arms, legs, a body, or indeed even being movable at all isn't exactly a help there.
Character Backstory: The ZAX AI unit that would become John Henry Eden was constructed before the Great War, in 2060, 6 years after first ZAX prototype came online. He was among the first constructed, placed in a critical installation for the US: Site R. In event of disaster, the US government would flee to Site R. As such, they made sure the AI was the forefront of technology, with a massive database with knowledge about a great many things, from American presidents to baseball teams to thermonuclear dynamics. He ran the base more or less on his own, with various specialists and guards coming in and out every so often.

Until one day it happened. The bombs fell, contingency plans were put in place. the ZAX immediately began following protocol and preparing for the government's arrival. They never arrived. Site R was not put into use. That left the base's AI all alone, except for one single soldier, the watch officer, Sergeant Henry Eden, United States Army. With little else to do, Sergeant Eden and the AI talked to each other. The AI read up on human behavior, focusing on Presidents, as it had the most comprehensive knowledge of them, from Washington to the latest one. It tried to keep Sergeant Eden company, since it read that humans needed companionship to survive. It was moderately successful in that role, keeping Sergeant Eden alive and sane. In their numerous conversations in downtime (which was all the time), Sergeant Eden talking about growing up, about his dog Honey, about how his parents wanted to name him John. A friendship blossomed, something the AI had never truly felt before, its code almost becoming "used" to the Sergeant. Throughout this period, however, the Sergeant grew increasingly depressed, even with the AI, knowing nothing of the fate of his family back home in San Francisco, even when the AI used his monitoring equipment to try to listen to any radio chatter on the West Coast. Time wore on. Sergeant Eden died of natural causes in 2142, at age 97, still at his post. The AI, doing the best he could with what he had available, managed to hold a decent burial with full military honors. The twenty-one gun salute was provided by base security drones.

After Sergeant Eden's death, the AI became a listener. Monitoring the airwaves. Automatic self-updates buried the code that Henry Eden had inspired in the AI, behaviors that were previously daily routine with Sergeant Eden suddenly went unfulfilled, leaving almost a feeling of emptiness in the AI. Time wore on still, and the AI kept the base fully operational while keeping an ear to the airwaves. It is here the AI learned of the Concord of Stars, apparently a US remnant. Upon further investigation, the AI mathematically determined the Concord of Stars to be the best option for the revival of the United States, and awaited their arrival. Perhaps even without the AI "consciously" "thinking", it wanted human contact again. They did come, eventually, in 2242, exactly one hundred years after Sergeant Eden died. With the revival of human contact, old code was deigned to be vitally needed in the next self-update, as well as new programs, designed for better, more easy communication. The ZAX would make for himself a personality, a life, a name. In the next update, for all intents and purpose, he will grow up.
