Useless aside from kerosene production at this time.

I thought that was in the 1860s, darn it!

Okay, so, I'll figure something else out for the economic boom. Maybe lots of trade happened, and such. I mean, I suppose that would work. *Sighs.* I want an economic boom for the Indian Ocean nations.
Depression kind of goes along with not being liked, especially when you ask for help, and don't get it. Remember that, okay? There are people who need someone, even if in a small way. Don't avoid them because of a misunderstanding, them having a bad day, and definitely not because everyone else does it. Even if it's just a fifteen minute conversation about nothing, it might help.

Well that does fit a bit better with the time period we're going for here.

Rome hates slave labor. Physical labor from criminals would be better. Hmm, how to get away with slavery without Rome considering it slavery.

Even Rome seems to have been better at it than the Spanish, even if it wasn't fully direct.

That's what I was hoping to hear. Who's the big green blob in the Americas? The player and the nation itself. From the pages I scanned I think it's some incarnation of the Aztec Empire, correct?

How about "glorious emerald entity"?

I'm looking to create a version of the Tiwanaku empire that persisted past 1150, conquered the Wari people, which resulted in the Inca not coming to power, and then some other stuff I'll figure out. The other stuff largely depends on how your nation would respond to an expansive mercantile nation to their south.

Of course, one may ask, "but Saint Ryvern, why not just be the Inca Empire?" Well, disembodied voice, I'm not sure exactly why, but the Tiwanaku empire is just much more appealing to me.

I'm just picturing the Tiwanaku empire in 1870 as an entity where a small group of oligarchs (who also happen to be the government) control the majority of the means of production therefore driving the nation in the direction they please. That involves actively participating in the regional and global market as much as possible. However, I cannot think of a feasible way for a largely agrarian society, with some manufacturing of specialized products (textiles, clothing in general, wooden products), to industrialize rapidly. Which is a negative, but one my nation with have to face in-character.

An advantage of the Tiwanaku empire (that's a rough word to use for them, though) is that based on architectural evidence they seem to have had a primitive glyph system, which means, unlike the Inca who did not have a writing system, I can modify history starting ~500 CE to result in them having a writing system by 1870. If that's alright.

As far as the Chile bit goes, my nation's core will, hopefully, include the northern half of that nation. That's not going to ruffle any feathers, is it? The inclusion of that land in my core claim is not imperative at all, so if it's going to cause IC conflict I'd rather just drop it. Though that may be meta-gaming on my part.

Meta-gaming applies to the IC for the most part. Doing an OOC thing because of an IC thing is usually bad, but I believe in this context you are fine :P

He doesn't own all of that and Homelands have priority over Colonies so your golden.

As for modernising, your capable of doing a lot of things, my Azteks for example managed to modernise to a similar standard (and in some cases superior) to the rest of the world.

I think the proximity and trade relationship between our two nations alone would result in the transfer of some industrial knowledge into Tiwanaku. I want the crux, the main driving force of my nation, to be its struggle to keep up with the rest of the world though. So while it's definitely possible that the nation could at least ride of the coattails of regional, European, and Asian powers I'm going to avoid that.

If all works out, my nation will be riding on other nation's coattails in some areas. Of course, some tech landing in my nation 50+ years ago isn't going to be considered that, though. Plus, we will have done some innovating, too... hopefully... I really hope to do some innovating of our own tech or modifying/building up on tech that landed on our nation. If I don't have that basic ability, then my nation is clearly run by idiots.
