Mana Academy OOC III (Fantasy, Open)

Postby Rhomaia » Sun Dec 25, 2016 4:35 am

"...As time continues marching on around him, and having grown older and wiser from his many successes and failures, Man has learned that there are precious few constants in this world in which he resides, save for the doubts which will forever plague his fragile mind. Even so, it has been for many centuries that he has come to believe that there are indeed fewer uncertainties than he once thought. With the advent of the sciences, culture, the Enlightenment, and the new structure of the world in which he lives, Man has indeed advanced much.

Yet for all of his progress since the Dark Ages, he has since discarded a crucial truth about his world, for in his great strides towards the stars and quest to understand the universe, it has become so terribly easy for him to forget his past, and become blind to what lies behind him...

"Magic, that fantastical force of the supernatural, that facet of fiction most people in the modern world disregard as the stuff of fairy tales and old legends, is far more than the work of reverie, for it is the unseen power that has shaped the world since it's very inception, and Mages, the keepers and guardians of all of it's secrets, are but anomalies in a world where they are thought not to exist...

...Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, it would surely seem...No stranger, of course, than the tales yet to be sung, and all of the despair that has yet to be woven...But fear not, for every story I have to tell shall be told in due time..."

~The Storyteller

Mana Academy has existed for hundreds of years and continues to thrive in the present day, making its home on a small island on the shores of Lake Superior, in North America. Students from all across the world are discovered, and approached to attend starting at age 14. These students, however, aren't like any other: They are mages, naturally predisposed to the use of elemental magic: The ancient magics of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water, and all the combinations thereof. Students who attend have purposefully or accidentally displayed potency in conjuring and manipulating these elements, usually with one element in particular. It is the role of the Academy to give the young witches and wizards of today the chance to grow and learn about both their talents and the world around them.

Our story has been an interesting one so far, filled with pride, drama, prejudice, romance, mystery, and bitter rivalry between students and teachers alike. All the while, demons and dastardly plots lurk in the background, threatening to tear apart a fragile piece between the forces of Light and the agents of the Dark...Yet one question remains unanswered still... How will your story unfold?

Lore and Order

Postby Rhomaia » Sun Dec 25, 2016 4:36 am

Lore and the Academy
Work in Progress

There are four houses to choose from in Mana Academy. While you are sorted into a house based on your proficiency at orientation, you can choose to be in another house, if you desire. Houses share class time with others, and are rarely segregated, save for sleeping, and specific elemental activities.

Solum

Solum mages are mages of the earth. They follow a strict honor code, and believe that the path towards an ideal life is through hard work and trustworthiness. Solum mages are taught from an early age to be resourceful, independent, and live off of the land they are given. However, this also tends to turn these mages into incredibly stubborn and selfless people.

Ignis

Ignis mages are of fire, and are cunning, bold, and take charge. Never ones to shy away from a challenge or change who they are for others, the mages of fire burn the brightest in all aspects of their lives. However, this also means they burn hottest, and are quite brash and quick to anger.

Venta

Venta mages, which control wind, are athletic, carefree, and creative. While they may not command great respect or responsibility as often as their peers, they much prefer to be free to do as they please, and make life a smiling affair while they do so. Never standing still however, Venta mages can also tend to be unfocused, naive, or not as well respected.

Aquo

Aquo mages, who manipulate water, are level-headed, collected, and intelligent. Not preferring to be leaders as much as Ignis mages, but not as supporting as Solum mages, Aquo students prefer to work secluded but have their achievements admired by all. Ever the academics, Aquo students are often fascinated by the inner workings of the mind. However, they can also be obsessive, introverted, and unable to handle stress.
Mages and the Magical World

You may consider yourself familiar with such fantasy settings as those in literature, film, and perhaps even the daydreams that populate your own imagination. Outlandish, chaotic, and utterly nonsensical in their mechanics and intricacies, much like the supposed magic act of a man pulling a rabbit out of a hat or the plot a Saturday morning cartoon.

Mystical as a fantasy wizard setting might be, with all of it's wand waving and spell casting and curse chanting, the Magical World as mages in the modern day know it is far more akin to that of a rigorously structured society wherein one is far, far, far more likely to be subject to obscene amounts of bureaucracy or byzantine regulations than be warped into a toad by way of some accident.

Back to seriousness, the Magical World is a world hidden away from all those not gifted with the rare talent of magic, or Mundanes as they are so often called. The population of the Earth numbers over seven and a half billion, but there is a grand total of a half of one percent of people in the world capable of manipulating mana, known as Mages.

Mages, by definition, are learned persons versed in the arts of mana manipulation, and thus elemental magic. Their abilities are wide and varied, examples including Firebreathers who hold sway over molten earth, to the Stormbringers who bend lightning to their will, to even the Cloudwalkers that can control the very air itself.

The history and documentation of Mages goes back a very long time, from their origins as shamans of the first primitive human cultures to holy priests of the Egyptian pantheon, to assassins and scholars in the days of the Roman Empire, to outlaws and blasphemers during the Great Scourges of Medieval Europe, and their gradual re-ascension to power during the late Renaissance with the advent of the Great Houses, and even today in the modern era that long and diverse history is celebrated by Mages, who for all their differences and idiosyncrasies found themselves able to survive through unity and strength.

Segmented and segregated as a society, within the Magical World peace, knowledge, and ingenuity came to be revered as virtues, and it is to this end that the accumulation wisdom through proper tutelage is seen as a must for the children of the new generation, so that the art of magic will always be remembered. Clandestine places where magic could be practiced away from fearful Mundane eyes were established in England beginning in the 17th century, and from there the practice grew more widespread until nearly every country in Europe had developed it's own magic schools. Mana Academy is but a descendant of these, but is nonetheless a fine example.

Centuries of persecution and witch hunts have done much to shape the Magical World, which functions almost like a hidden kingdom working behind the scenes of the Mundane one. It's very existence is kept an absolute secret from the public eye, and those select few non-magical people that do discover it are usually of high place in Mundane governments, but those without such a status, those liable to disclose it's existence are...Well, let's just say they have a bad habit of disappearing and never being heard from again, that's the kid friendly version.

To summarize, the Magical World is Earth's largest secret society, with all of it's networks and intricacies of power woven together through the strict style of law kept by it's rulers, the Nobles, who are similarly interwoven into some of the richest and most powerful Mundane families there are. It is all but concentrated on keeping the decades long peace between it and the Mundanes, simultaneously sending it's sons and daughters to learn it's ways and trying to keep itself from falling apart from simple feuds. All is in a delicate state of balance and calm, with it's scales in nigh perfect equilibrium...

Oh, how easy it would be for a single drop of blood to tip them, and send it all crashing down...
Mana

Before you go on further, dear reader, it would be prudent of you to learn just what 'mana' is, and just how it is relevant to the Magical World as a whole. After all, we cannot truly have a story about magic without discussing how magic works in the first place.

It has been known by many names throughout history, by many different mages of many different creeds and cultures. Whether it is called Chi, Prana, Ka, Archaeus, Pneuma, Manitou, Väki, or more simply as 'Life Force', every mage in the world is familiar with at least one of these terms, but for those in the West, the most widely recognized name for it is, as aforementioned, 'Mana'.

Mana is the energy that flows through all living things, from Mages, to Mundanes, to the evergreen plant life, to all of the creatures mystical and not that dwell within the uncharted wilderness, running like a vast network of rivers through ley lines underground. It is, if you will, the essence of life itself, and is theorized by some to be vital to life, like some fuel to the soul, though there is no knowing whether such speculations are true or false. What is most definitely true about mana, however, is that it serves as the one and only catalyst for magic, and that Mages are among the only beings on the planet capable of harnessing it. Depending on the wielder, it can be used for any number of feats. With the power of mana, and proper training, a Mage can master the elements and use them for any number of situations.

The act of manipulating mana is fairly complex, and thus requires a great amount of focus and willpower to be utilized effectively. To perform this act, the user can cast their magic from any one of eight main points in their body; one for each shoulder, one for each hand, one for each leg, one in the heart, and one in the forehead. The most common method of using it in the process of casting magic, an example being a Stormbringer throwing a lightning bolt, is to cast it from the hands, though skilled Mages tend to vary their methods.

It is important to note that humans and other creatures do not generate the mana they use, they collect, store, and focus it. The ability to use mana is present in all living complex living things, though very few are able to harness it in such a recognizable way as Mages do, such as the act of levitation, crafting illusions or anything else.

Despite all that it is used for in terms of spellcasting and routine instances of magic use, the true nature of mana remains an utter and complete mystery to Mages, even in the modern day. After the results of varied experimentation over the centuries and even the discovery of a pure, crystallized form of mana found within the Apennines, little has been gleamed about the true nature of it. The truth eludes the Magical World to this very day, and only leaves it's scholars with an ever growing pool of questions.

How does mana power the magic of living things? Why are Mages, of all the peoples on the Earth, attuned to it and Mundanes not? Will Mages ever run out of mana? These are all burning questions that have dwelt within the scientific circles of the Magical World for ages, and have given birth to countless theories and speculations ranging from interdimensional energy to ancient astronauts, each one more bizarre than the last. But, with nothing concrete to latch onto, the rest of the Magical World has simply stopped questioning and gone about as it always has. As fo what results this will bring, only time will tell.
The Blood Caste

In the Magical World, there are two sects of society, two different castes that governs one's place and status within the world. Much like in feudal society, the system is strictly regimented, meaning that an individual mage hailing from the lower caste can be almost guaranteed to remain there for the entirety of their life. However, though the low may never rise to the top, it is not unheard of for the opposite to occur, for those on the top of the pyramid to fall from grace.

Whichever sect you were born into, whatever blood runs through your veins, you would do well to learn and study the intricacies of the ages old system which has managed to preserve itself even going into the modern era, the system that the entire Magical World is built upon.

Commonbloods

To start off, we have the first sect, primarily known as 'Commonbloods', so named due to the fact that the vast majority of mages within it's ranks are of non-Noble or even Mundane ancestry, making the use of the term something of a disdainful slur in regards to it's usage.

Composing roughly 90 to 95 percent of the Mage population worldwide, Commons are the Magical World's craftsmen, fighters, merchants, teachers, and general citizenry, much like the middle to lower classes of medieval European society. However, unlike the image of serfs or peasants that may come to mind, they oftentimes tend to be mobile, taking their work, magical or not, with them wherever they go. As such, they are both extremely diverse in heritage and interspersed all throughout the world, and are versed in virtually all walks of life that any person could think of.

Noblebloods

Scholars. Aristocrats. Leaders. Philanthropists. Lorekeepers. Remnants. These are the words that so often come to mind when one wishes to describe the second, higher class of magical society. The aptly named (and sometimes not so aptly named) 'Nobleblood' sect is comprised of the most wealthy and powerful clans in the Magical World, adopting their moniker from the term applied to the European families that constitute it's backbone, the Noble Houses.

With their power and influence having been established centuries, if not a millenium ago through intermarriage with prominent European dynasties such as the Habsbrugs or the Capets, mages of the Nobleblood sect are prominent land owners and entrepreneurs, as well the veritable rulers and administrators of the Magical World. Their vast demesnes provide for the upkeep of the various organizations that keep the world safe from Black Mages, such as the Accord, the Inquisition, and the Order, on top of also funding education initiatives to nurture and train the new generation of young mages. As such, it has been said by many the Noblebloods have indeed laid the foundation and thus maintained the infrastructure that allows for order in the wild world over which they preside.

This far reaching influence, however, does curse them with great arrogance, and thus hubris. Bad blood, feuds, and a mad scramble for power mark the history of many a House, and for some of the Great Houses today there hangs a great sword overhead. Nobleblood families, often involved with the byzantine politics, are never solely concerned with wealth, but preserving their lives from rivals that would seek to usurp their power, and the sacred knowledge they have held dear for centuries...
The Inquisition
"Where we stand, we shall defend."

The Inquisition is a paramilitary and police force created to combat the rising threat of rogue mages in the twentieth century. It drew from many other similar organization when it was founded in 1933 in the United States. It earn initial renown for helping to defeat Black Mages used by Nazi Germany, and continued in the tumultuous years after the war. They were even incorporated as a NGO in the United Nation charter. Eventually a dark side of the organization started to emerge, as it started to more and more resemble its name sake of the middle ages. As the list of dead innocents and abuses of power grew, it has lost much of its former prestige and is now viewed with fear mistrust by most Mages.

The First Accord of Mages
"From Chaos and Deceit, Order and Truth."

The First Accord of Mages, or simply known as the Accord in most circles of the Magical World, was a political organization founded in 1854 in an effort to promote cooperation and friendship between the countless disunited magical clans and academies across the world in order to foster a spirit of solidarity and strength against the threat of Black Mages in their time. Under the symbol of the blue moon, the Accord's many followers worked towards a bright future, for both the magical world and all of mankind.

In recent years, however, the Accord has fallen from grace and lost it's popularity for it's adoption of policies relating to 'Mage Supremacy' and it's new policy of inaction towards Dark Mages, which most of the magical community frowns upon and thus shuns the movement for. But by no means does this mean that the Accord is not influential in politics, quite the opposite. They remain among the largest followings in the Magical World, and use their power to conceal their world's very existence. Be it through political means, or otherwise...

The Jaegar Brotherhood
"Fear not the shadow of the Moon...Fear what lurks in it's wake."

In the Dark Ages of Europe, where darkness, disorder, and death reigned over a shattered and divided Europe, the concept of Magic was not one that inspired awe and wonder, but a dark art that brought ruin to everything it touched. However, despite what many Mages would like to say, these fears of magical individuals were well founded. Dark Mages, or simply normal Mages infuriated with the state of their existence, would often bring indiscriminate destruction upon Mundane towns and villages. There are even records of groups that were organized for just the purpose of striking back against the Mundanes.

Chief among these splinter groups were the Jaegars in the Holy Roman Empire, a powerful pagan cult of Black Mages and swordsmen that sought blood to satiate the fury of an ancient goddess of the moon, whose name has been long lost to the annals of history. It is not known how many thousands died by their hands in those centuries alone, but they did not go unpunished. Europe's Light mages rose to the call, and waged war against them. The end result was the near extinction of all the Lightbearers in France, Germany, and the Benelux, and the fading of the Jaegars into the shadows...

Centuries later, after the rise of fascism in Europe culminated in the birth of Nazi Germany, the Jaegars resurfaced, and were, after the war, found to be utilized as a secret division of the Reich's formidable army of Black Mages, to which only the inner circle of the Party was knowledgable. However, by the war's end and the capitulation of the state, they were taken into the service of the First Accord, a faction which had remained neutral all throughout the war, before it's members could be tried for war crimes.

Today, the Jaegars do not actively hunt Mundanes or Light Mages, but instead act as the black operatives of the Magical World, working in the shadows against demons and Black Mages, and double as the strong arm of the Accord in times of political crisis in order to ensure that there is peace between the Great Houses. Since their adoption and subsequent reorganization by the Accord, the reach of the Brotherhood has spread beyond Germany to Western Europe, North America, and even Japan, though whether or not this constitutes a genuine need for security in these areas or something else entirely, few know for sure...

Abusus Ordinis in Virtute
"By the bite of our blades, by the might of our shield, by the grace of our God."

A knightly order founded in the time of the Crusades, they originally fought to purge what they saw as the abuses of power by mages in the Near East. Later they started to realize the same corruption existed in Europe, and from their fortress in the mountains of Switzerland they dealt their brand of justice. It was swift and often brutal, but rather fair when compared to other groups in Europe. They have maintained the same ethos into the modern world, and refused to join the Inquisition when it was formed. They have become the shock troops of the magical world, sent in to the most dangerous of situations, normally called in by governments too weak to fight black mages on their own, and ignored by the Inquisition.

Reliqua Romana
"For the ashes of our fathers, and the temples of our Gods..."

Formed in the years following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire by the subsequent exodus of mages from the Imperial capital, the Reliqua Romana is not a military or political organization in the traditional sense, but rather a small community residing in the Apennine Mountains in Italy. It holds no real presence in the Magical World, secreted away even from the communities looking to integrate with it. The Reliqua, or the Remnant in English, does hold ancient secrets of Sun, Light, and Wind magic that were thought lost after the fall of the capit mundi.

Stationed high on Monte Amaro, intricate barriers of Light magic cleverly conceal it's existence from land and the air, and with an atmosphere made more habitable by alterations to the landscape, it is one of the first and only surviving magical settlements in the world.

But as with all things, there is a reason that the Remnant hides away it's secrets in the high mountains, away from the prying eyes of Mages...

The Nychta Syndicate
"All that is fair must fade, just as day falls to the night's shade..."

Just as the Brotherhood, Inquisition, and the Order were formed to maintain peace and order, the few bright sparks ignited from legacies of persecution, anarchy, and loss that sought to bring the Magical World light and hope in it's darkest times, so too have there been groups working in the shadows to snuff out those age old flames.

The Dark Mages of Europe have only twice in history ever been unified under a common banner, during the Black Death and the Second World War, periods of great bloodshed, anarchy, and disorder that brought out all the worst in humanity. First was under the Circle of Seven in Poland during the spread of the plague, and the second being the Blind Legion in Hungary. Neither was very long lived, lasting a few years at the very most thanks to the work of the Lightbearers and the Inquisition respectively.

However, there does exist a third rendition of these groups within Europe as of the modern day. The Nychta Syndicate, as it is known in underground circles, is an especially powerful organization with numerous ties to the Romanian and Russian mafia. Headed by a single, ancient family of Black Mages, it has been moving slowly to gain power in Europe shielded from the prying eyes of the Accord, Inquisition, and the Order...Though how it could remain a secret in the Magical World is anyone's guess...Perhaps they are not yet strong enough to warrant revealing themselves...Or, they are simply waiting for the right time to strike.
Mana Beings and Otherworldly Creatures

The Magical World, as complex as it is, does not only include secret Mages, but also creatures beyond the understanding of Mundanes. Perhaps the great Professor Scalamander found many of them on his travels, as recorded in his excellent book, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" but there are many that exist even beyond the understanding of some of the great Mages...

Angels

The Christian understanding of Angels has nine categories of Angels, all of whom have various roles in serving God and defending humankind from evil. The Angels of the Magical World are similar, but rather than being beings made of Heavenly Light itself, they are beings made entirely of Light Mana. They can take many forms, as Christian Angels can, and many prefer humanoid forms while they are on Earth. Their realm, much like Heaven, is a bright and lovely place, a manifestation of all Light Mana in existence.

Meteor showers, to many humans, are often signals of some sort of celestial beauty entering our atmosphere. While this is true, it is not primarily because of the reasons one would normally think. The "meteors" are actually the result of catastrophic magical events, anything from genocidal magic to the creation of forbidden magical creatures. Meteor showers, in reality, are Angels that have fallen to Earth, in order to seek the overwhelming presence of darkness and to cleanse it. This occurrence related to Angels has also mysteriously been responsible for the creation of Light Mages, who have become very scarce in the last hundred years...

Demons

In the same way, Demons of the Magical World are not the Demons of Christianity, aimed directly at the spiritual destruction of humans. Rather, they are spiritual manifestations of Dark Mana, beyond the understanding of most Mundanes. They live in a dimension made entirely of Dark Mana, however, and thus their world is mostly uninhabitable, save for beings that contain immense amounts of Dark Mana. Most of them are violent, power-hungry, and competitive. After all, their 'Hell' is a place of constant turmoil and power-struggles.

While they are not mainly aimed toward the destruction of humans, they can very well be summoned to fight humans. As with Christian demons, however, making a deal with them normally means giving one's essence to them, and-if the spell is not broken-the soul of the individual in the deal will be in 'Hell' when the person dies. Generally their existence in the human world means a magical catastrophe of some sorts has happened, generally also signaling the appearance of Angels to fight them.

Mana Beings

Humans have attempted to credit beings of monstrous magic since the beginning of time, and their efforts have caused many odd results. One of these is the creation of Mana Beings. Beings made of pure mana and all five elements, or Aether as they are collectively known, they are generally neutral, but also incredibly powerful and beautiful. Unfortunately, their power and beauty have equally played a part in their near-extinction, with only three recorded specimen still existing in the world. Creation of these does not usually result in a Magical Catastrophe, as they are made from Mana itself, though attempting to create one of human-level intellect and function normally causes far more Mana than a normal Mage is capable of producing...

Dark Mana Beings

The antithesis of Mana Beings, these are beings made specifically to contain Dark Mana. Created with Dark Mana, aether, and any number of human sacrifices (the more that are used, the more powerful, intelligent, and physically beautiful the being is-hence why creating these is considered a capital crime), they are prized weapons and accomplices among Dark Mages. Unlike Mana Beings, which are mostly independent, Dark Mana Beings are generally made with a built-in loyalty clause: a Dark Mana Being will protect whomever they consider to be their "Master" with their life.

Many of these actually exist in the natural world, as a result of Dark Mana having entered the world very early in its existence. These are ruled by a hierarchy of princesses and of one Queen, who is the "Mother" of all natural beings. Normally, DMBs are amoral, following the will of the Queen above all things. Very few are both independent and capable of human intelligence. Those that are are mostly beset with other disabilities. Creation of these generally causes a Magical Catastrophe, especially if several are made at once...

Much Christmas, such wow. Also, I went to the gayest holiday party ever last night, it was gayer than the Mana student body. Out of 12 people there were 3 lesbian couples and 1 gay couple. I found it both awesome and hilarious. Now, though, it seems I must do the oposite, go to my grandma's house, the land of no internet and 1950's idea's about sexuality.

'Gayer than the Mana student body'.

Well, that's definitely a thing. XD

How many gay couples do we have...

Aria and Catherine
Shaun and Allistor
Katelyn and Hailey (I think?)

So yeah. Gayer than the Mana student body. Accomplishment! XD

"Gayer than the Mana student body..."

I feel like we have accomplished something. I'm feeling happy now. Or should I say gay?

Also we have a new OOC. That's a nice Christmas gift; how fun.

Now I'm gonna go lay down. I ate too much food and is currently debating on whether or not I should take a nap even though I just took one or go play some video games.

It seems I was the only one here who was reasonable while eating in Christmas.

Also "gayer than Mana's student body" is quite a way to describe your environment.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I was also very reasonable. I usually am--I don't have much of an appetite at all.

Yes. Katelyn and Hailey. We have more non-paired gay students though.

I mean, let's look at my characters... hmm.

Kasumi: Straight
Hikari: Straight, but has issues
Katelyn: About as straight as the Nazca Lines
Aether: Asexual but able to compromise if partner(or should I say Rabbit) is not
Natalie: NO! NO SEXUALITIES FOR HER! Do you want to traumatize the poor thing? After what her late best friend and her Mama went through? There is only one possible ship for her anyway. Orso. (This happened when I had the most adorable mental picture of the two of them trying to dance at the ball, and then an even more adorable mental picture of Orso in a tux and Natalie in a tiny doll wedding dress. Cutest. Ever.) Cheese does not count as a ship because it is a food.
Himiko: Bisexual, or she will be if/when she gets over the whole Momoko situation
Sadako: Straight.

Once again:

Soleil: Straight...?

Rabbit: PLEASE JUST LOVE ME, I'M TIRED OF BEING HURT.

Cecily: Rabbit. Straight.

John: Straight.

Momoko: Straight.

Himiko: Straight.

Katsuko: "STANDING ON TOP OF MY MIGHTY FORTRESS LOOKING OVER THE BURNING REMAINS OF MY ENEMIES. BOW TO ME. BOW TO ME. WORSHIP ME YOU-I mean...straight."

Catherine: Very much Lesibian
Annice: Straight, but really isn't a sexual person.
Tsukuyomi: Well, she had a husband and kids, but now is just too old for this shit
Hailey: Pansexual, though in a gay relationship
Amelie: Busy with other things ATM, check back later.

Henry: Straight
Amber: Straight
Basil: He's already married, [strike]which doesn't mean much things, but anyways[/spoiler] so he's also straight.

Also, apparently I've survived through Christmas. New Year's Eve is my next trial.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Let's see....

Shaun: Gay, but can rarely find certain women attractive, but won't get with them.
Simone: Straight.
Dominique: Mostly straight, but is opened minded to try new things.

Oh, I didn't? Let me take care of that later on

And since we're listing our characters' sexuality, here's mine:

Allistor: Bisexual
Artosh: Rabbit I'm always sick help me
Aloysus: Straight
Mercillia: Give me tea and a few people to punch then we'll talk
Random stuff here. Random stuff there. Bla bla bla. Whatever I don't care.

That's quite an accurate summary of their marriage.

Confirmed, Piedmont and Navarre are now Serbia in 1914. Etienne shall now be renamed Franz.
