KazuyaCall to Arms
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Signature card:
Brief Backstory: As a young boy, Kazuya adored dragons, and thought they were just about the coolest thing in the world. He had books on their biology, history, or just stories. It was nearly an obsession, but that wasn't too abnormal, being that he was only, what, six? Maybe seven.
It took a darker turn when he went on a vacation with his parents to a foreign country. To save money for the otherwise expensive trip, they'd stayed in a rather shady, run down hotel, but he hadn't really minded that much. They'd seen lots of cool stuff, and he'd gotten a really neat necklace with an intricately carved dragon on it as a souvenir, as well as some duel monsters that he really just looked at, thinking they were pretty cool.
Of course, things took a darker turn when that shady hotel turned out to be the wrong choice, after all. As they were walking down the stairs, there was no elevator, his dad was walking in front of him, and he stopped very, very suddenly, telling him, very quietly, to shush and go back to the room just as Kazuya asked what was going on.
He didn't know then, or for a few weeks, what had been going on, and didn't understand it until he was older, but they'd come across a rather low-profile drug deal that had been very poorly planned, due to where it had taken place. Within seconds of a harmless "Dad, why are we stopping?" the little boy was curled up in a corner, eyes that couldn't look away peeping through spread fingers at the limp forms of his parents, the ringing in his ears to loud for him to register the sirens or continued gunshots.
He had screamed when the police took him away, but he'd been screaming before, too.
The next few months were awful. His parents, as young and healthy as they had been, hadn't left a will, and the entire family immediately began fighting over everything they'd had.
Everything, that is, except for Kazuya.
Not only could he not, himself, fight back with a lawyer of his own, but no one seemed to want the orphaned grandaughter, niece, or even cousin, as much as they did the now 'free' possessions left by his parents. By the time the legal fighting was over, he was left in an orphanage, with nothing but his clothes, his books, the necklace, and one card, his Armed Dragon.
Before, he'd thought it was kind of cute, but after the incident, he'd torn most of the little cards up, and that had been the last one, and he'd known he'd regret destroying it, too. And so, almost as more of an escape than anything else, Kazuya began collecting more of them, if only to give his aching heart some hell of solace. He did enjoy dueling, and wasn't bad, his free time split between that and burying himself in books about dragons to escape the pain that wouldn't stop squeezing at him.
Over the next two years, he was adopted many times, and sent back many times when the foster families realized that he seemed to have the impression that they would really care after a week when he spent half the day crying, and the other rocking back and forth, staring at that card while clenching the necklace his parents had given him just before the incident he he simply refused to refer to as anything but "It."
By the time he was ten, no one came anymore, and that was about the point he began 'talking to himself,' but he would swear that that Armed Dragon was on his shoulder, talking right back to him, a little voice of compassion in the back of his head in such an awful world. Of course, it didn't take long for him to stop doing that in public. The other kids had begun to give him funny looks, and he'd become even more antisocial. Not that he hanged out with them much anymore. More and more, what should have been his time in school became time he wandered the streets, petty theft becoming a common occurrence. Nothing big, but sometimes it wasn't exactly small, either.
Granted, it was only a matter of time before he got caught. Eventually, when he went back to the orphanage, he was met by a single officer. He'd been caught by some fat guy after swiping his wallet, which he'd gotten quite good at, and he surrendered the wallet, but what he didn't tell the officer was that he'd already bought a few packs of cards from a local store. Granted, once the report on his appearance went out, suddenly a lot more came up from his past to bite him, hard, where the sun don't shine.
But for once, the orphanage did something for him, and got him two options after a good deal of haggling. A year behind bars, or Starlight Academy. That had been an easy decision.
And, in a wonderful display of his skill, he ended up with the glorious rank of bronze, with a note on his grades sheet reading, "Relies too much on brute force."
