So "The death of Earth" is not really its destruction... but... something that made it uninhabitable?

No, it's still inhabited.

So, the "death of Earth" was figurative?

Koizumi is pretty transparently an Asian Krennic. I have no apologies.

The Yamataian Death Star is supposed to be a North Korean Nuke-type thing and after numerous weeks harping about it (and getting permission) I am finally moving that storyline forward. Not really that scary, but still dangerous enough to warrant perhaps some discussion about it elsewhere after they visibly test it to show that they can be as big as the real big boys.

Finished.

My main species app is a little lazy, but I don't want to stray too far. I don't think I could pull off a widely exotic species and all the consistently different style that''d need :P

True Refuge wrote:First species app, close to done aside from quite a few details.
Species App

Species Name: Hawks (Voidhawks, Blackhawks), a.k.a “Mindships” or “Bitek Starships”
Species Appearance: Most Hawks hold the appearance of either some variety of streamlined starship, or a shape approaching a teardrop with ridges on the top side of the ship. Blackhawks have the former appearance, while voidhawks mostly have the latter.
Height/Weight: They’re spaceships, therefore the weight is around several hundred tonnes or higher depending on age or sup-species. Generally, voidhawks are around 110 metres across the circular shape, and 30 metres deep, while blackhawks often reach 150-250m long.
Lifespan Voidhawks: 100-130 years. Blackhawks: 80-110 years. (Based on decay rate of patterning cells, see Biological Information)
Tech Level: Level 8-10 dependent on definition. Hawks are artificial, sentient and highly intelligent creatures created by the “INSERT OTHRE SPECIES” through bitek, capable of FTL over 10-21 ly (distance and accuracy of jump varies based on actual distance and age of the hawk), while the gravitational manipulation that causes the FTL travel could be considered telekinesis.
Average Psionics Rating: Level 2: Capable of long-range instantaneous telepathy and empath abilities like the other populations of the Remnants equipped with the affinity gene.
Biological Information: Hawks are completely organic bitek (More on bitek in Nation App) constructs made out of a hard flesh similar to Earthen coral. Their outer layer of cells boil away into space and are constantly regrown, creating a requirement of frequent specialist nutrient fluid feedings from Tranquillity Stations or otherwise.
Weapon systems, shields and otherwise are artificial and added on during the later stages of what could be called the hawk’s adolescence and its growth towards full size. Interior passageways and rooms for crew and passengers (bridge, corridors, etc.) are grown with the rest of the hawk, only becoming useable around 5 years of age.

In the centre of the hawk, which is most often below the bridge, are a cluster of cells which use most of the energy required by the hawk for operation. Patterning cells are what give hawks the ability to manipulate gravity, gravitational waves and the space-time continuum around them with practical applications such as wormhole creation, the hawks’ choice of FTL travel. Over time, these cells decay, leading to a decreasing accuracy in “swallows” (the name for wormhole manoeuvres created by hawks), and the species’ life expectancy. A downside is that hawks have trouble entering the atmospheres of planetary bodies due to the stress it puts on its abilities.

The methods of natural reproduction have not been tested as hawks are a relatively new species, but it is intended that at the end of a hawk’s life that it heads to a large gas giant with another hawk of any mature age. The dying hawk will have stored between 8 and 12 eggs within it in special bays. The other ship will give the eggs part of its genetic material, allowing the reproducing hawk to dive into the atmosphere. The gravitational waves would let the hawk overcharge its patterning cells, and then pour that energy into the eggs enough to awaken them and to shoot them back towards the surviving hawk while the parent dies. Prior to the reproduction, all weapons and exterior artificial add-ons are removed to prevent interference with the eggs release, while the crew is allowed to watch from the interior of the second ship.

One of the most notable characteristics that hawks share is the bond that a hawk creates with its captain, one that is created as the hawk is born and the “INSERT SPECIES” youngling waits for it to be permanently forged. The two creatures invariably share a familial love for each other throughout their lives. Such a bond is not formed with crew members, although friendship is almost certain. Telepathic contact and emotion sharing between captain and ship becomes nearly constant. Captains actually begin captaining their ship around the age of fifteen Kulu years, equivalent to sixteen Earth years.

There are two main kinds of hawks, each with major and minor differences. Voidhawks were the first kind of bitek starship created, back in the days of Estan II’s failing reign, made with the simple notion of making something sentient with the revolutionary biteknology discovered by Discoverer Ameri and her supporting biotech companies. Blackhawks, on the other hand, where derived from a mutation in voidhawk genetics that led to slightly increased patterning cell stamina, swallow distance, size and other benefits. Ameri’s team quickly used the mutation in an enhanced form to form another type of hawk, one that would be faster, stronger and better in most ways with more potential for the addition of extra structures.

The blackhawks were of course better in many regards, but a cost of the mutation and its enhancement was a reduced lifespan. Despite this, blackhawks were constructed quickly to meet the demand of the growing refugee fleet (See the Remnant’s History.)

Culture: Hawks display a considerable amount of reverence for the several voidhawks and blackhawks created in the first batch of their respective sub-species, known to them as the Elders. Additionally, most hawks maintain membership to the Great Consensus, a wide entanglement of telepathic connections with appointed leaders in the hawk species, usually the Elders that represent the ships and their captains’ interests in the Remnants they reside in.
Hawks consider themselves equals to the other inhabitants of the Remnants, and those inhabitants generally agree while also offering them respect due to their higher intelligence and wisdom.
Other information: The personalities of hawks are often warm and welcoming, with some childish immaturity for the younger ones that is often compounded by the young ages of their captains.

Nation App
(Image)
The citizens of the Remnant of Kulu place incredible significance in their flag and its emblems. The five stars signify the Lord of the Remnant and his four High Tacticians, while the four segments of the central star-like symbol represent the four species of the nation: "INSERT SPECIES", voidhawks, blackhawks and the habitats.

NS Name: True Refuge
Nation Name: The Remnant of Kulu, also known as “The Remnants”.
Government Type: Monarchy/Oligarchy
Description of Government: Ruled by a monarchical Lord of The Remnant
Capital(System, Planet, City) Tranquillity Bitek Station, Pacem, orbiting the gas giant known as the Duke.
History:
Only a short decade or so ago, The Kulu Kingdom was once a massive empire ruled with a gentle hand for centuries, flourishing under the rule of the Saldana royal clan and the Parliament below it. Spread across several hundred star systems and a formidable regional power with potential to eventually become a Great Power, certainly in a time shorter than a millennium, as the Kingdom and its territories were set to expand much further during its golden age under Queen Cathri I. The teachings of values similar to those of human Christianity without religious aspects unified the Kingdom and brought peace to most of its lands. A state-owned company, the Kulu Corporation, that laid in the hands of the royal family maintained massive influence in an extremely diverse portfolio of industries. However, like many powerful nations, this was not to last, as a series of unfortunate coincidences swarmed the political side of the government.

An idiotic and naïve Estan Saldana II took the throne, and a corrupt Prime Overseer was elected in an embarrassing farce of an election that ridiculed Estan’s namesake. With these two blundering morons ruling the country, the large royal family split into numerous factions, the main ones being those supporting the leaders, those politically against them and those truly infuriated by the ridicule the monarch and his highest servant was bringing the Kingdom. Jarvan Saldana was the only member of the last faction, but he held considerable influence in a rapidly growing bio-technics industry. It had long been restricted by religious views which denied genetics and AI development the room and support it needed for "going against the organic values of Kulu", but had bloomed again under an industry watchdog that was rapidly becoming neglectful.

Jarvan received nanonic implants from the biotechs, namely a neural processor, and was "wetwired", a term meaning to have weapons implanted inside the body, for his own safety. While this greatly angered his family, the last straw that led to his ostracisation was him undergoing genetic altering, bequeathing him an extended life, a greater immune system and greater intelligence. Despite the mounting opposition, Jarvan marched onwards, albeit with the distaste of former family, friends and allies. Calling in old favours from within the few that still enjoyed his company, he secretly diverted funding into the bio-technics corporations, with the objective of discovering something life-changing.

They provided two completely revolutionary discoveries. The first was called it the affinity gene. A gene that when spliced into an organism’s genome gave them the ability to communicate through telepathy with other creatures with the gene through quantum entangling, and also the ability to perceive a rough idea of emotions in others with the gene. Jarvan, keen to show his support, immediately spliced this into his genome, guaranteeing it would survive in his descendants for as long as his clan survived. The second now forms the foundations of the Remnants today. Bitek as made by Discoverer Ameri became a manipulable living tissue that could be genetically modified into nearly any form within imagination and plausibility. In secret, the first voidhawks were created and bonded with several orphans with nowhere else to go. The formation of such things was a travesty to the Saldanas, but they never found out about Jarvan’s clandestine projects.

Unfortunately for the Empire, these discoveries coincided with the beginning of the Highbreed War, a war that King Emanuel brought the weakened Kingdom into in a stumble. The decision, going against the unwarlike nature of “insert Species” shattered an already dissatisfied populace, and Jarvan re-emerged in the public, trumpeting an alternative against the terrible leadership. Support was incredibly high, increasing further as worlds were lost to the unconventional enemy. The royal family attempted to restrain the disobedience with heavy military force, and at that time Jarvan defected, organising an exodus for millions and bio-technic corporations to leave for another habitable system far away from the rapidly crumbling Kulu. Towards the start of the war, the Saldanas lost their hold on their Kingdom, and it fell into anarchy. It quickly faded into insignificance among the nations that survived the war, dismissed as another of the horrific casualties.

Prince Jarvan led his refugees over a massive journey with thousands of ships led by the Ombey, a grand kilometre long battleship that once served as the command flagship of the Kulu Navy stolen by an ally. The planets and systems behind them slowly fell to the Highbreed as more and more joined them on their escape. As the fleet progressed, the scientific community that he had rescued conducted yet more research into the affinity gene and its possibilities, and ships crammed full of fleeing citizens began to follow them into the unknown. The first “habitat” personality was created using bitek in the early stages of travel, which became a sentient living intelligence that was stored inside Jarvan’s personal ship, and he and the growing number of voidhawks conversed with it until it broke apart and died after several Earth days. He commissioned further research into making longer-lived bitek organisms of the same species.

By the time the expeditionary force found its ideal system to survive in after a year of near constant-FTL travel and several stopovers among small unknown agrarian nations to replenish and recuperate, it had grown to several hundred million travellers along tens of thousands of ships, all sustained by a rapidly dwindling supplies. The researchers had improved bitek tissue immensely, giving it the ability of creating several different species, each of which were sentient, intelligent and infused with the affinity gene, which most of the refugees had received. A habitat species was germinated around the new system’s one gas giant, and was named Tranquillity, and it rapidly grew to accommodate its citizens. The system was named Pacem, to signify and celebrate the end of their journey and the arrival of peace. As time passed, the refugees split into agrarian settlements on planetary surfaces, Tranquillity residents and the workers of the nearby Estia system, an inhospitable but extremely valuable collection of gas giants and asteroid belts around a red dwarf star.

At the nation’s formal unification after its stabilization, Lord of the Remnants Jarvan IV dubbed it the Remnants, with Tranquillity as its capital, a reminder that it was what was left of the long-gone empire, and a reminder to him that he had journeyed and left his family behind. Jarvan’s single daughter, Ione, is in suspended animation awaiting him to weaken of old age or otherwise be unable to continue his duties. Tranquillity watches over itself in conjunction with the Lord of Remnants, making itself available to its residents and assisting their monarch wherever possible.
Nation Type: Fledgling Power
Tech Level: Level 8-10 based on definition. Energy weapons are being brought into the military, but conventional ballistics and explosives remain popular for their inexpensive nature
Number of Systems: 4 (Pacem, Aurais, Estia and Cathri’s Palace.)
Population(1 trillion or less): 1 billion.
Species: TBD

Economic Theory: Protectionist
Economic Strength: Underdeveloped due to the lack of foreign trade, but otherwise self-sufficient and reasonable.
Manufacturing Strength: Strong, powered by the needs of a new and growing nation.
Agricultural Strength: Good, reliant on large swathes of terrestrial fields of the wheat-and-vegetable-analogue crops taken from the Kulu Kingdom.

Military Population(no more the 3% of your population): ~1.1 million.
Branches:The military, dubbed the Remaining Forces, consists of two sections, completely independent from each other due to the great differences between the technology and weaponry used, along with ethnic, rank and other disparities between the sections. The full military, which is actually quite puny compared to other nations, can only be scrambled under an order from the current Lord of the Remnants.

Land: A large collection of grunts, officers and other lowly soldiers, the Terran Combat Division utilizes old Kulu technology, along with whatever can be scavenged and reworked from other fallen nations. Squads are in sets of 12, platoons in 48. As the Remnants has not had the opportunity to go to war and is not likely to do so in the near future, rank and advancement are awarded based on a soldier’s dedication to their orders and tasks.

Infiltrators are a very small group of elite soldiers, many of whom were soldiers in the Kulu era, forming the Remnants’ only significant special forces program, although they remain one of the most commonly deployed units of the Land Division. Depending on their mission, Infiltrators either carry small SMGs, or high-powered sniper rifles, along with either mini-crossbows or suppressed machine pistols as their sidearm. An advanced version of a personal shield generator, something taken from an experimental laboratory during the fleeing from Kulu, allows Infiltrators to activate a temporary invisibility cloak, although a ‘shimmer’ is still visible while moving quickly. Their objectives are described as missions that require quiet or quick entry and exit, such as raids, assassinations or long-range support for normal platoons.

Navy:The Navy division of the Remaining Forces is held in high regard due to a lot of captains not asking for pay of any kind other than food, shelter and duty. Bitek is used liberally in the construction of ‘hawks’, living spaceships that are bonded to their captain through the affinity gene, and exist in multiple varieties. Hawks reproduce by self-destructing in the atmosphere of Pacem's single gas giant, the Duke. (See Hawk species app for more.)

For this reason, soldiers of the Navy rarely rout from their battles, as captain and crew feel the need to let the ship live a full, honourable life to reproduce or die fighting. There are only two ranks, crew, and Captain. Bitek ships have the advantage of each being quite different from each other, a decent ability to self-repair after a firefight, and a resistence to electronic warfare (although on-board systems will still be affected without shielding). The weakness of hawks is that they do not function well in gravity, as such they cannot enter planet atmospheres, making them ineffective in providing support for ground troops.

Captains and their ship must serve ten (Tranquil) years in navy service, the usual path from there usually is either trade, continued service or exploration of space.

In addition to hawks, Spatial Defence Platforms (usually called SDs), essentially mounted heavy electron lasers, sit in orbit around the Ruin’s planets and Tranquillity to assist in defence. In wartime, SDs production can be somewhat accelerated to ensure safety of valuable assets.
Average Infantry The majority of the technology, weaponry and designs utilized in the infantry forces are based or directly taken from the Kingdom.
The MAX is a hulking terror, capable of soaking an incredible amount of small arms fire through heavy armour, and can hold two large weapons clipped to the suit’s arms, which can range from chain guns, anti-vehicle grenade launchers, light anti-aircraft cannons, gauss guns and rocket launchers. Prototypes of the MAX suit used today were created after farmers began modifying powered exoskeletons intended for terrestrial mining operations, welding shotguns and homemade metal plates to them for use in defending their crops against wild xenoc animals.

After their potential for both saving and taking lives was realized, revisions to the initial design were quickly adopted by the Land Division. The end result is a lumbering juggernaut capable of adapting their flexible weapons systems to a variety of situations while absorbing immense amounts of fire. While the MAX suit’s reduced mobility and reliance on complex repairs and materials has prevented it from replacing entire armies, its combat flexibility and cover it provides for fellow soldiers marks it as a valuable asset of the Remaining Forces. The MAX-V variant features airtight armour and removes most of the ammunition to replace it with oxygen storage, allowing for use in thin atmosphere and vacuum environments.

The standard soldier* of the army utilizes standard projectile weaponry, a cheap alternative to the energy weapons popular among other nations. Every soldier carries a personal light shield generator and light body armour, although the strength of both of these vary wildly depending on soldier role, rank and importance. Weaponry includes carbines, light machine guns, and a variety of different explosives. The standard soldier is not completely well-trained, and membership is high due to the lack of wars and other military requirements in the Remnants’ region.

Each squad’s twelve members is divided into a Squad Leader (utilizing communication equipment, flares, and leadership skills), four Heavy Assaults (LMGs, heavy shields and overdrive for said shield, picture shown), five Light Assaults (jetpack equipped), a MAX, and a medic.
Standard weapons The majority of the Remnants’ weaponry and MAX suits is manufactured by Nanite Systems (NS), which despite the name does not use nanites in its design. NS is a small domestic outfit, owning most of the factories, defence contracts and is well-known amongst the populace.

*Please ignore the human ethnicity of the soldier :P
Ordinary Soldier
The TX1 Repeater is the standard pistol for most soldiers, utilizing both a 3 9mm round burst and semi-automatic fire selection. Very reliable but slightly weak in firepower.
________________________________________
The NS-44 Commissioner provides a powerful sidearm chambered in a .44 calibre round for Heavy Assaults, but is very loud and creates a large amount of recoil, an apt description for such a ‘hand cannon’.
________________________________________
The T1 Cycler is the standard issue carbine for most, featuring reliability, a decent 40 round magazine of 7.62mm, semi and automatic firing.
________________________________________
The T9 Carv is a brutal 5.56mm LMG capable of tearing through the morale of enemies, although they’re usually used to scare off animals. Carrying a 100 round drum magazine, it is a favourite among Heavy Assaults.
________________________________________
The NS Decimator and the NS Annihilator are utilized as the main shoulder-fired anti-armour weaponry in the hands of Heavy Assault troops. The former shoots a large low velocity rocket capable of dealing medium damage to well-armoured targets and devastating damage to lightly armoured or otherwise soft targets. The latter is able to lock-on to signatures of both air and ground vehicles and can do so rapidly, but is unable to dumb-fire. The two launchers are alternated between depending on enemy composition.
________________________________________
MAX Units
The MRC3 Mercy minigun is often wielded in conjunction with the M3 Pounder HEG rotary grenade launcher, NS-Burster AA cannon, MR1 Fracture high-velocity rocket launcher or with a second MRC3. With the MAX suit’s recoil dampeners, along with a massive amount of ammunition carried, the Mercy is capable of long, rapid and somewhat accurate suppressive fire.
________________________________________
Infiltrators
Infiltrators carry either a bolt-action RAMS .50 or a semi-automatic 99SV for long-range missions, and a NS Hunter QCX crossbow . For closer engagements, a MKV-Suppressed 9mm bullpup SMG is used.
Common Ground Fighting Vehicles:
Terrestrial patrols utilize a lot of old vehicle technology, such as the Prowler(which’s unique two-barreled design combined with a AP HMG attached, gives it great anti-vehicle firepower), and the Mosquito. While these vehicles and the designs behind them are old, they are not often needed and are reliable when they are.
Ship Classes: Voidhawks and Blackhawks, with a number non-bitek starships although they are too unimportant and varied to be given specific classes.
Weapons Type(energy, rail, missle?): Combination of conventional for ground troops and railguns/missiles for ships.

Lazy Species App

Species Name: Kulu
Species Appearance: The weakness of the star that the Kulu's homeworld orbited led to a pale white skin that could be compared to the tone of humans of Scandinavian descent aside from its subtle grey tint, although it has darkened over the millennium or two since their first spacecraft launch.

The Kulu are, due to their home planet having the similar conditions of said middle-aged yellow star and an abundance of water, they are, with the exception of a slightly thinner, lankier build from living on smaller sized planets throughout their relatively short-existence, somewhat alike to humans or at least of humanoid stature.

A noticeable addition is two seaweed frond-like that hang from their shoulders down along their arms. Originally, they extended to the wrist, but a lot of the Kulu have shortened them with genetic and surgical operations. Before the dawn of affinity and the fashion of long-sleeved clothing, the fronds would let off subtle movements to indicate emotions, but since affinity has made that ability redundant, they have no current practical use.

Height/Weight: Within 1.6 to 1.9m, 60-80kg (healthy range.)
Lifespan 80-140 Earth years, although genetic modifications continue to be researched with the purpose of extending this even further.
Tech Level: Level 8-10
Average Psionics Rating: Level 2: Affinity-equipped citizens are capable of complete, unlimited duration telepathy although there is not much else.
Biological Information: Quite similar to most humanoid's, consisting of a lack of an exoskeleton, soft damageable skin and oxygen-breathing.
Culture: The remaining Kulu citizens pride themselves on the values their fallen Kingdom once taught, morals similar to that of Confucionism in its polite superficial respect for all. Such rules are now only loosely followed, however, as the values are a common source of nostalgia, even more so than the numerous traces of their old empire that now lay scattered around them.

During the growth of the Kingdom, the majority did observe a secretive religion closed to outsiders centred around the worship of an unnamed group of godly beings called "The Seven", but as the technology of the nation developed and the praise of transcendent beings fell out of fashion, these beliefs faded until it only remained in academic archives and the diehard believers. Those too were lost in the Kingdom's collapse, and it is not known whether or not it survives in the Remnants.

Currently, the Kulu, being in their vulnerable state, are suspicious of outsiders and their society's outliers. This is emphasised by the extremely strong sense of unity that affinity and the emotional contact involved with it bring.

Okay, I think I asked this before, but out of curiousity, was Japan the only nation to survive the "death of Earth"? We've got the Uesugi Confederation, the Yamatai Empire, the Pratorian festival with Japanese theme music, et cetera. There have to be Russians or Botswanans or some other humans out in the universe!

Earth isn't dead. I messed up in the op and there are some places that say it's still alive and others were t says it's dead. The parts where it says were dead were overlooked when I decided to have Earth be available to play. Earth is currently a part of the Orso Empire, which has replaced the Republic of Man on the map.

You also forgot the Ostians who are Germans, and the fact that the Tagali Federation and the United Antivarian Republic have humans within them of very mixed cultures and ethnicities.

The Ostian Imperium started as a collection of Human colonies. The majority ethnic-group in the Ostian Imperium is German. There are two official languages into the Ostian Imperium, High Ostian (German) and Low Ostian (English). In Ostian custom, when speaking to a member of the higher social strata, member of the government, member of the military, and the nobility. You speak High Ostian to them. All government documents and laws are in High Ostian. Low Ostian is used for everyone else and everything else. In school, students are required to know both Low and High Ostian.

There are also other human ethnic minorities in the Ostian Imperium, but they are small compared to the german majority. Halibut, most of the names of the systems (Pieck, Postdam, Suhl, Leipzig, Brot, and such are German names.

Quite literally, the Ostian Imperium's aesthetics are East German. And there are references to this like the royal names of the monarch such as Karl Engels (Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels) and Lenina Marx (Vladimir Lenin [Admittedly not East German but still a major infulence] and Karl Marx). The word Ostian is derived from the German word Ost meaning East.

Fun facts.

Veroxia, when is the meeting is taking place? In the present or in the past? Just asking for clarification. Because if it is in the present, then the Tagali and the Ostians have been at war for about one hour now.

Anyone want interactions with a fledgling power that has unique biotechnical tech?

Also, can I have a dot on the pat along the Perseus Arm, near the Orion Spur on the map? (just on the actual arm itself.)

I mean, if nobody else wants to, I can. I'm doing an expeditionary venture by the Grand Company anyways.

Perhaps the classic stumble by the Remnants?

Although it'd probably be more interesting if both parties were in the middle of exploration.

Or the new guys could stumble upon each other, thinking themselves the only ones in the galaxy. That should make for an interesting interaction.

My nation used to be part of a regional power that would have probably interacted with other nations, but that sounds even better.

Perhaps we'll all end up in a coalition of fledgling powers that actually would haves ome influence.

This might seem like a silly question, but are there any weird, Lovecraftian species active in this RP?

Also, second question - are there any rules regarding non-sentient extraorbital fauna? I.e. "space whales"?
