If they kill a million and the magic breaks, how will they know they're innocent?

Well unless they incinerate them it might take a moment for them to die, and normal people might not react to dying the same way mindless minions do.

Maybe you can add to the mythos a little. Like, Azrael has enslaved some of his species? Makes the entire fight bigger.
