Longden Memorial was first established in 2000 as the first prototype of its kind. A revolutionary self-sufficient hospital compound which would continue on even if society collapsed. The campus is formed like a ring with buildings connected by skyways so you don't have to leave to go to the next building. In the center is a massive garden centered around a large fountain which serves as a pond for all sorts of local animals. The garden gives purpose to the patients so they don't spend their days locked up in the buildings. It also grows an extra source of food something the government made mandatory back after the atomic war of '78. This roleplay is centered around the hospital campus specifically during the quarantine of the city of Boston. Either you work at the campus, reside here in one of the apartments or were brought here as a patient, but regardless you all know a family day is coming. You can sense something off in the air as the demeanor in Boston isn't right. The streets are slowly growing quiet, and the news reports get weirder every day, but things will get much worse. None of you know about the upcoming quarantine, but rest assured your lives will change forever. 1) I expect those with illnesses or conditions that limit their physical strength to be able to reflect that upon their character. If a fight breaks out in the cafeteria I don't want the terminal cancer patient, and the eighty-year-old grandmother to effectively combat much stronger people. I do expect that fights over supplies will occur, but try to keep a limit on what your character can do per their weaknesses. If you are playing as the sick or the elderly then play the role. An 80-year-old grandmother is probably not going to bash someone's brain in over a can of beans, but do expect there to be internal fighting. 2) There is only so much medication a hospital contains, and as supply shipments dwindle, and then stop choices must be made. The group must come first so be wary of choices you make. For they will impact anyone, and anything, for example, say you have a sick niece with a rare medical condition. You decide to use your position in the pharmacy to steal, and hoard medication for her at the expense of everyone else. If you get caught you must face the consequences of your actions whatever they may be. 3) The military stationed here are not to lord over the people here from day one. The first parts will involve the military taking on a role of safeguarding the campus. Only as things get more desperate will the more authoritarian streaks come out. For now, keep an eye out for those trying to breach the wall. You have received permission to open fire on any mobs of people trying desperately to get into the hospital. 4) Even though payment isn't really a concern once the quarantine drags on the staff are expected to maintain their high standards. I know morale will start to crack, and supplies will wear down, but that is no excuse to go full homicidal maniac killing people throughout the hospital (yet). The staff involved in medical care will be responsible for making tough choices when it comes to treatment of people especially with low medication amounts left. Whether you choose to humanely euthanize said patient, continue treatment, or try to wait it all depends on the patient. While you have a choice to make they also must, in turn, respond to your choice accordingly. 5) Maintaining the power is essential alongside maintaining your equipment since it will determine the difference between life, and death for many people. Water and food will be plentiful at first, but down the road rationing will start, and groups will have to interact and figure out who gets fed, and who doesn't. I will on occasion allow those involved in the military, and some civilians to go out on scouting expeditions for supplies, but these events will be regulated. 6) Hygiene is important not just for your character, but for the hospital as it keeps the health of everyone there up. Mental health is a major factor as most if not all players will have family on the outside. As the situation outside becomes clear many will wonder where their family is, but as the news from the outside becomes ever grim this will take a toll. Suicide, grief, and other problems are to be expected especially with the confinement of people inside the campus. Feel free to explore, but be mindful as power becomes rationed new events will pop up like having abandoned a building for example. My goal in this roleplay is a focus on interpersonal conflicts of petty or major drama as well as personal issues of the mind, religious beliefs, and whether or not your character came come to terms with the death of their world, and ultimately themselves. Each group will have their own agendas, and goals during the quarantine, and often these will come into conflict with one another. I expect this since the roleplay isn't going to be all sunshine and rainbows due to the quarantine, and changing states of Boston. 1) The Patients: The Patients are those who are in Longden Memorial by the time of the imposed quarantine. The types of patients vary from those who were in for surgeries, to those who need to be hospitalized because they are receiving treatments that could prolong their lives. To those who are within a few years or a year of their death, and are under pain management by the hospital. Then you have people with regular chronic conditions which are being treated through techniques not available in regular medical offices. 2) The Elderly: Longden Memorial is the first of its kind to have a retirement ward within its grounds. Longden himself occupies the top floor of the ward in a privately operated, and secured penthouse. There is a branch of staff which deal exclusively with the elderly residents, but they aren't completely segregated from the other wards. After all the cafeteria, and common grounds bring people of all backgrounds together. Something rather rare in an intensely classist part of Boston. 3) The Staff: The Staff at Longden are picked by an intensive screening process which ensures they will commit to the best of those under their care. They could have taken positions in other places, but something drew them here. One of the benefits of working here is the apartment ward which allows the staff to live here when they need to. The day the hospital was being quarantined was supposed to be family day, but it looks like that is going to be canceled. 4) Military Platoon: A platoon from the 26th Infantry Division (Massachusetts National Guard) has been sent to quarantine, and guard the hospital for no clear reason. Those playing in this role will be responsible for keeping the hospital secure, orderly, and free of the panicking masses trying to break in either to receive medical help from the synthetic plague or rescue family members. Looters and other groups may try, and raid it for supplies as order breaks down. 1) This should be obvious, but please do not godmod. 2) If you have an issue with another poster either take it to tg or just let your steam out in the IC. I do not want several pages worth of fighting because of two or more posters. 3) I expect at minimum a decent paragraph when in the IC. 4) Every group has its limits, after all, a terminal cancer patient is not going to be too interested in the stresses of the military. Yet they will with the staff since they are only alive because of them. An elderly resident is also not going to be able to truly fight with a soldier over the distribution of food physically. 5) Please obey the Co-ops. 6) No trolling, flaming, flame baiting, and the usual nonsense. I get that people aren't perfect, but try, and keep it in the OOC to a minimum. 7) This roleplay takes place a few years back, but technology is radically different from our own. So if you have a question please ask, and lore goes with this as well. 8 ) I will be strict on how many characters will be allowed into the roleplay since this is a quarantined complex. Each character must be valued as a finite resource since they are. This will highlight the effect, and importance of any murder, and suicide which is bound to occur. |
October 7th, 2011 Five Years into the Global Pandemic Five months into Americas Epidemic Month 5 of Americas epidemic, Infection detected in New England Region Begin recording Hello, This is Doctor Ashton reporting in from the CDC on the matter of infection being detected in New England. I am currently awaiting reassignment to Boston while at the Fort Devens Quarantine Camp in Massachusetts. The CDC and the government are unwilling to admit to the public this is not the flu in order to keep up with the fiction, and that is fine with me. Some call it the punishment of God manifested ironically, and they may be right. Seeing as how it uses what we need to survive the radiation of the planet against us. My colleagues in various projects are working on what to ensure something of humanity survives in the omega cities. Others have for decades knew humanity would come to an end and have worked to create another species. A radical minority launched off into another system with thousands of colonists to populate a new world, and we have yet to confirm whether they are successful or not. This thing spreads using our nanites which sustain our very lives by corrupting them with new programming. At first, you feel a sniffle, and eventually drainage before taking your temperature, and maybe meds to stifle the symptoms. These meds "work" at first and the symptoms go away but come back with a vengeance forcing you into a doctors office to be checked on. By this point, you have a slight fever, a cough, and sneezing. Anyone, you come into contact with during the symptoms phase could potentially be infected as well. Anything near you such as food, water, surfaces, and even the air is rife with infected nanites who arbitrarily pick, and choose the next target that happens to walk by them or encounter them. Soon your throat is dry, and sore causing any speech to be hushed as talking starts to hurt. The fever you have gets worse, and worse as your limbs start to ache. Even if you got to a hospital the doctors could do nothing for you, but ease your pain as the end of symptoms phase comes upon you. The fever causes hallucinations urging you to accept your fate should the nanites choose you as the host. If they don't hallucinatory conversations of dead loved ones urging you to join them pop up most people don't resist, but the ones who linger on will face hallucinations of blame, and guilt to push them over. Meanwhile in the real world blood starts seeping out of the eyes, nose, and mouth indicating something is up. The conversations are always in vivid detail with the ones who get an offer to join being told of the benefits of becoming one with the turned. The same goes for those being encouraged to give up, and pass on as during the conversation as their willpower erodes they get their wish, and the organs fail painlessly. No one has ever survived this process at all, and it is highly unlikely anyone ever will. Those who accept the offer to be turned will undergo a coma, and wake up a brand new being. The rate of both of these outcomes is 40& each leaving room for 20% of an oddball collection of survivors. The "turned" have ashen gray pale skin with host personality suppressed in exchange for something else driving them. Every turned is linked by a hivemind of four powerful rulers known as the "tones" who enforce order through a strange orchestra of musical tones, and whispers. They speak a primitive form of language retain high cognition, thinking skills, good memory, and are able to master tools. A good example of their memory is being able to avoid traps that injured them already. They are functionally immortality with only the most severe of wounds able to overwhelm their regenerative, and life-sustaining abilities. Death is meaningless to them as their memories and all that is them get transported over to an available host as quickly as possible so it is possible to see turned possessing the memories of multiple lifetimes. The few autopsies available reveal blackened organs streamlined into a few new organs necessary for their survival. The turned to produce a black saliva which is activated when a person is bitten not as a method of turning, but tracking said bitten person like cattle. They will be hunted until the end of days, and when captured will be turned as well when decided. They all carry memories of their old lives and can be witnessed attending things that were once important them in life like church or workplaces they once worked at. To us, these seem like mockeries of humanity, but to them its something to remind of what they used to be. This event which has signaled the end of the world came amazingly fast to the states. We were content to wall ourselves off while the world went to hell. Then in one of the corporate cities off the coast of Washington, some bus driver got infected, and it all went to hell. The place got sunk into the sea by orbital defense system, but it didn't the infection as some of the survivors evacuated earlier began to experience symptoms. It burns through roadside stop towns, and attraction in a few day at the most. Bigger towns might last two weeks while cities might last over a month, but in the end, nearly every one of them falls unless they prepared well enough beforehand to prevent infection like Des Moines out in Iowa. To think Arnette, Washington a symbol of massive corporate wealth struck down in its prime would be funny if it weren't an awful reality we face today. Most of us in the government know this "flu" got its name because it broke out in Japan first, but not many know that activists had broken into a lab in Okinawa releasing it during their ill-conceived attempt to get evidence of cruel human testing. Okinawa fell in weeks and was obliterated by the orbital defense system, but the infection escaped to Japan, and despite a brutal naval quarantine cases popped up in mainland China. Afterwards, we pulled everybody out and screened our returning citizens before closing our borders for good. We offered no help as the world burned for there was none we could give. This infection is the end of humanity as we know, and suffice it to say this is the most ironic way to go out. Perhaps these turned will be merciful to us all, and allow something us to remain on earth as a little piece of us remains in them. This is Doctor Ashton signing off hopefully not for the last time. End recording. Signing out. The choices you make over the roleplay will not only lead to a darker or lighter ending for the hospital but will affect the fate of Boston as The number of people who survive will affect the ending in many ways. For every peerson who commits suicide, every person who dies of their disease, and every person who is murdered all effect the ending. There will be serious ethical implications for the choices you decide such as deciding whether it is for the greater good to euthanize the direst cases or let survivors go outside starving. The actions of this roleplay, and others in this act will ultimately determine the fate of the entire city. The U.S military is desperate in trying to keep the Northeast from experiencing what the rest of the U.S above the quarantine wall is reeling from. The darker the outcome the darker the fate of the city will ultimately be. The darkest outcome being the city is firebombed to spare whatever is left of Massachusetts. The lightest ending ofcourse being that the plague is either pushed back or that something of life goes on in the city. Rest assured nothing will ever be the same though. This hospital focuses on experimental treatment for diseases which still plague modern society. Designed by the mysterious billionaire tech giant Longden who reportedly lives in a penthouse at the top of the apartments not much is known about them. This hospital features state of the art facilities, and designed with chic from the 1950s, and 1960s. A trend common in much of the U.S, and the world until communications were lost that is. There are several buildings in a self-enclosed space all connected by advanced skyways. One building houses the cafeteria, another the apartments while one houses the elderly retirement home. One building is entirely devoted to extreme cases such as those that are terminal, with chronic disease or other conditions deemed worthy. Another building is dedicated to recovering patients, the lobotomy victims ward, and the ICU. The experimental ward testing nanites on those who volunteer with all kinds of conditions are the main focus of the hospital. Yet those with mental illness are housed in the psychiatric ward refurbished from an old mental hospital. |

Hello, My name is Richard Chapman, and I am making this recording prior to my execution by firing squad for various trumped-up charges. They are silencing me for daring to break the silence about something that is bringing about the extinction of the human race, and for it, I shall die tomorrow. The date if it matters anymore is 12/7/2011, and this is my last night on the earth. I suppose for whatever remains of the human race I shall leave this as a lesson tape on how our civilization died. You know children they used to call this place "America the Beautiful", but the truth is it hasn't been like that for so long. I was before after the "War of December 7th" in which the Soviets under a false alarm dropped 5 hydrogen bombs on a cold December day in 1978 New York. The force shook the island so violently that it began to sink leaving only parts of Manhattan behind as a monument. Dad was there and said the city was a hellscape of fire, and ash before the parts of the city began sinking. The U.S didn't take this lying down and enacted a lottery of the world's cities, and areas to be targeted in retaliation. The first was Moscow, and then the other areas followed by the beginning of the new year over one billion would die from the bombs, fires, radiation poisoning, accidents, and the chaos in general. Nixon had won a third time in 1976 seemed to take the U.S into a brand new direction with several needed reforms for its health structure, and welfare system, but the war changed all that. D.C was abandoned for the Omega Cities specifically the one known as Columbia, Missouri which was built to serve as the emergency capital of the states. In practice, the Omega Cities were designed by corporations to be self-sufficient domed cities which would serve as a seed bank for the last remnants of humanity in case of an apocalypse. The apocalypse that day didn't happen, but the worlds three superpowers (The U.S, Soviet Union, and European Federation) would be weakened for the time come so they had to focus on rebuilding rather than proxy conflicts. The U.S and other countries instituted rewards for having multiple healthy children to replace the people lost during the war. The U.S capitalized on the opportunity and transformed December into a month of reflection of loss, and grief. The first days leading up to the 7th were grief over the loss of what the world could have been. From the 7th to the 14th it was grief over the loss of what the world once was. From then it was mourning of the dead, and commemoration of the rebuilding till Christmas eve. By the early 1980s contact with our colonies up in space were reestablished while the Orbital Defense System was established by the U.S as leverage to prevent such a war from ever happening again. Some corporations began building an artificial island connecting to the cleared remains of Old Manhattan once they were given the okay to do say. This new island city was named New Manhattan in commemoration for the surviving part of old New York. The technology that made Omega Cities self-sufficient also made this new city as well. The democratic candidate Ronald Reagan entered the presidency on a campaign of healing divides, and restoring the U.S. He did more than people anticipated by whipping up just enough support to repeal the apartheid system which had been in place since 1957. From the early 1950s to 1957 the "Integrationist Crisis" had caused the South to descend into a quagmire of terrorism, and militia fighting in the rural areas. President Eisenhower mobilized the military and declared the status of indefinite martial law in the South while also putting an end to the civil rights movement by purging it of many active leaders. Many states not just the South with government support went on to force blacks into ghettos known as "autonomous districts", carry passbooks everywhere, and were practically non-citizens (except for those deemed necessary to the government). These autonomous districts practically were little nations ran by councils, but were forced to the last of any supply shipments (especially in the aftermath of the war). For his efforts, Reagan got a bullet in his head, and their successors spent every hour working to reverse the changes and bring back things the old ways. This resulted in a militarized police, and since public fear of food shortages remained high the U.S government maintained rationing well past when it was actually needed. Racial hygiene laws were put in place as well as laws expressly limiting the careers of women (unless you had enough money that is). Homosexuality and other so-called "problems" which had been looked the other way were officially crimes again. The government enforced a "quasi-passport" system for its own citizens who wanted to travel state to state and made quotas for immigrants coming into the country even stricter. We like to call our nation beautiful, but it hasn't been that way for a long time. The ever-expanding control of the presidency which would go onto basically reduce the other branches into rubber stamps, and use the oversized military as its own personal shock force hasn't been completely unnoticed by the people. Yet many are complacent not wanting to lose their state-sanctioned apartments, houses in white picket fence suburbs, or funding for the new corporate planned cities. Everyone just seems ready to be complacent with dictatorship while food is rationed as long as they have their fancy black, and white televisions, new applications, fashions of the seasons, humanoid robotic servants, and cushy benefits provided by the government they could care less. The U.S has culturally and socially stagnated itself into some perverted version of a romanticized nightmare from the 1950s with all the music, television, pop culture, and dress not going farther than the early 60s. Everything has to be approved by the U.S Department of Culture, and Entertainment to ensure it isn't "unamerican". Normal police have also created what many call morality police to ensure people everywhere follow state guidelines on every little matter deemed worthy of their attention. Corporations have also acted on government authority, and have done many terrible things. Yet for all the social, and cultural stifling technology has advanced in many ways. People gawk over sleek plastic appliances, robotics, and supposed futuristic housing while the world burns at a feverish pace. We like to think of ourselves as lucky, and well fed, but you would have to be blind not to notice the long lines at the government rationing centers. Of course, those of us in the middle class and the wealthy we can somewhat afford to look the other way as corporations such as Vista continue to supply our neighborhoods with self-sufficient greenhouses, and remembrance farms thus rendering our areas free of food riots, and lines. Yes, there are those who say we have had to ration since 1978, and it was necessary thanks to the economy of our nation is in shambles, but this is unnecessary. We should not let the populace be starving for the sake of a few. Unless the government is truly powerless to stop the corporations. When our country chose to seal itself off while the world died from choking on its own blood from the plague the corporations such as Vista should have been forced to make the self-sufficient greenhouses available to all, not just the middle class, and wealthy. The nations energy resources of all kinds are being rationed to the lower classes despite the availability of nuclear power, especially in the corporate planned cities, and suburbs. The U.S has become a dictatorship with the President being the only one with real power anymore. Or perhaps there are some other forces at power puppet mastering even the president himself? At this point hypotheticals only add to the many mysteries that surround us so best not to trouble ourselves. Ever since the assassination of Jonas Salk the U.S government has had to be wary of epidemics. Polio could have very well been managed in the 1950s, but instead spread to be a pain until a scientist from the Republic of Japan used experimental nanites to completely put an end to the polio epidemic by 1976. In 1978 following the atomic war diseases of all kinds broke out, and the nanites proved useful in those as well, but there has always been a fear that there would be a disease the nanites were either incapable of dealing with or became a part of due to unnatural manipulation. Many have proposed this in think tanks, and in 1997 something of it became a reality. A synthetic plague of a strain similar to the one ravaging the world in some ways now. Broke out in the Peoples Republic of Great Britain on December 7th, and brought the country to collapse by new years. That one would have ravaged the world much earlier had it not been for the appalling, and genocidal quarantine put forth by the neighboring European Federation. Yet this scare caused the passing of the National Pandemic Act of 1998 which allowed a considerable amount of government power, and the establishment of quarantine walls across various parts of the country (such as the largest one covering the south, and the southern part of the western states). This apparently went into full use in 2008 when an outbreak in the Republic of Japan escaped quarantine causing the government to call in as many citizens abroad as possible, screen them once they reached certain areas of the airports, and closed the borders for good. Suffice to say there were a lot of disappointed foreigners stuck in the U.S. The massive border walls funded in part by the generosity of the corporations would come in handy once the plague reached the American continents. We live in a society of people whipped up into becoming stagnant xenophobes with a heavy side of germaphobia, and panic attacks thanks to the constant government improvements of technologies that screen for the synthetic plague. We have basically isolated ourselves into a giant coffin content to let the world die, but instead what if we all die screaming, and nowhere to go? Whatever forces are out there in the universe it seems this is doomed to happen. We should have helped the world when we had a chance, and now it is too late for any of us. I suppose this is goodbye. Sincerely, Richard Chapman. |

"War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over."
― William Tecumseh Sherman
Introduction:
War engulfs the northwest. The stability of Old America a distant memory by 200 years exact, and it's descendants try to recover a shard of it's former glory. With both handshakes and compromises along with gunshots and blades, the states in the Northwest get bigger and bigger. One of them has outclassed all others, The Tzardom of Spokane. Stretching from Kennewick to Spokane and then some, and holding all the land east of the Columbia within Washington State, the Tzardom is the regional power. With origins in the start of the collapse, the Tzars have expanded their dominion over the past two centuries, growing more and more ambitious each generation.
As war grew more complicated and understood by the tribes, towns, and states, the Tzars became introduced to new problems with invading it's neighbors. Their officers were assassinated regularly by crackpot teams, their ammo dumps raided and destroyed, and so the ideas were adopted. In response, the Tzar's Rangers were formed, a unit developed on old commando and special forces tactics. As a soldier transferred into this new unit, or a fresh recruit, it's your job to enact the Tzar's will.
Rules:
1. Don't be an ass.
2. The OP is the top tier authority.
3. No godmodding/metagaming.
4. I reserve the right to appoint Co-Ops, deny apps, and kick players from the RP if need be.
5. The Op and Co-Ops will resolve IC disputes if need be.
6. No One liners, for Dialogue however you may bypass this rule.
7. Stay active, inactive characters will be red shirted.
8. If your going to be inactive for a while but wish to come back (say your going on vacation or just got really busy) please tell an OP or Co-op so we don't kill off your character.
Setting:
Set 200 years after an apocalypse, the world is strange. After emerging from a 20 year darkest age after the initial collapse in 2015, America has gone through a few revivals of ages. There was a new iron age of sorts early on as people rediscovered blacksmithing and the basics to replace the lost factories, then an age of migration where the discontent and dissatisfied groups of America picked up and settled elsewhere. Currently it is at the tail end of the New Wild West, where the anarchic lawlessness remaining blended with the weak order of the new American states.
Regardless, at lot has changed over the centuries. Most pieces of commonplace knowledge in the modern day are gone, most everything from plumbing to the Apollo missions are disputed as either fact or myth, even the states of the American east are only vaguely known to exist. Pre-Collapse firearms are getting rarer, crudely made pipe rifles begin to take their place to fire whatever ammo is left, swords and machetes are evening becoming more common for mountain tribes and poor rural farmers who can't afford rifles. A few rare items from Pre-collapse America still exist however, ranging from old functioning stereos to binoculars and other desired ancient goods.
The Tzardom is the leading power of Northwest, though it shares regional influence with other states such as the Portland Conglomerate, the Seattle Seahawks, and Big Sky. With it's origins in the pre-collapse American Air Force base of Fairchild Air Force Base, the Tzars were poised to have great territorial ambitions. Recently, the Tzardom has become embroiled in a war along the Snake River with an alliance known as the Great Pact. While the war is in the Tzar's favor, progress has been slower than expected, leading to the formation of the Tzar's Rangers.
Most if not all of the RP will take place within Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, with perhaps a skirmish or two into British Columbia. At the start of the RP the characters have finished basic training, and are massed at an FOB in a town called Glade, preparing to commence Operation Louis against the Tri-Cities.

[PLACEHOLDER BANNER]
November 19, 2017, political unrest in Kenya sparks into a civil war, after Major General Kato Kamau seizes power of the government, in an apparent bid to quell the ongoing unrest. This does not go to plan.
In February of 2018, the civil war spills over into Tanzania, as multiple underground and revolutionary factions take their chances with the ongoing unrest to push themselves into the spotlight. In March of the same year, China begins militarily supporting two of their overseas interests, sending trainers and military support to both nations, hoping to quickly and easily quell the ongoing war. This doesn't go to plan either.
The United Nations forms UNMIKT (United Nations Mission In Kenya and Tanzania) backed by a majority of the UNSC and NATO. Creating unneeded tensions between China and the west. The involvement of the UN makes it difficult for most official parties to quickly and easily quell the ongoing crisis. The introduction of private military corporations making the already murky situation an outright shitshow.
It's now July 17th, 2018, and this is where you come in.
Hammerhead Security, founded in 2004 by former Russian VDV Captain Aleksandra Solomina, is a Dubrovnik registered Private Security Corporation, hiring former special forces and security personnel from across the globe. The company in question has recently taken a number of contracts in the region, acting directly in opposition to other PMCs, such as CHVK Vagner, GardaWorld, and Constellis, as well as the sovereign and underground powers involved.
You are mercenaries, and this is where you make your fortune.
