Long, long ago before there were the Second Children, before the First Children, before the world was formed or the Illuminated came to being, there was darkness.
But even this eternal dark was not all that had been. Before the Great Night as it was called there had been four great beings. The first was Gegerot, the most powerful of the four, next was Shermiga who's voice was said to make the stars weep, third was Eldeiath who's prowess with the blade and the bow was beyond anything the any mortal could dream. Finally there was Arsul, whom the other three kept weak out of fear of his power, for Arsul was the keeper of the Flame of Life. And for an eternity these four great beings ruled over the world. But the three soon to fear Arsul more and more with each passing eon, and Arsul grew stronger and stronger than they.
And so while Arsul was out amongst the world the three came behind him and bound him. Hand and feet tied together they threw him into the void beyond creation. And so the Flame of Life, without its keeper died and corruption entered to world. Corruption swept through that first world, consuming all, twisting life into terrible monstrosities. Not even the great beings were spared, turned to terrible beasts that hungered for light. And Gergerot and Shermiga and Eldeiath consumed the stars and the sun casting the world into utter darkness. All the while Arsul was bound in the void, his anger rising till his chains burst and he was free. And with the strength of his righteous fury he burst the veil and the brilliance of his arrival stunned the other three, and they were afraid of Arsul for vengeance gleamed in his eyes.
The three monstrosities tried to hide, but were ever Arsul looked he found them, and there hunger over came them and the attacked Arsul. They believed that the three of them would be stronger than Arsul, but they were mistaken for Arsul's rage had become more powerful than anything they had ever known. Terrible was the clash that followed. For eons the fought, the three versus the one. The three never gaining the advantage over the one and the longer they fought the hunger the became, driven more and more mad by the unstated disier for light. And than on day in that great battle Arsul overcame the three, and he bound them and cast them into the void as they had done to him. With them his cast the abominations of the First World.
With the three gone Arsul saw the vastness of the empty universe. So he rekindled the Flame and called it the Sun, and around it he build his palace. And beyond the Sun he placed the planets and beyond he placed the stars. And around all this he built a great wall between the void and the Second World to insure that his new creation would be protected from the terrors without. After he had done all this he created ten beings that would care for the worlds he created. These he called the Illuminated, and the created they first life on Mermdus.
The Illuminated were the first true beings to inhabit the Second World, created by Arsul to keep watch and to fill his creation with life. The Illuminated all reside the the In-between, a region not quiet in the real world and not quite within the Void. Here they have kept there vigil over the World. It is unclear how many of the Illuminated were created, but there are ten who have made there presence known to the mortal Second Children.
