I'm afraid I don't actually have time to post today- at least not in detail. So I'll just summarize the gist of the responses.

@ Nuxipal: A message returns from the north expressing wary interest in trade, offering bronze weapons for great price and agriculture goods in exchange for copper.

@ Norv: In the court of the Pirate-King your agent discovers one of the old King'a captains, a formidable strategist named Markav, holding court. He seems fairly level-headed, but you hear talk of executions of dissenters and a massive naval building program to counter the threat from his rival. That rival, Komenos the Bloody-Handed, appears to have retreated to Crete with his followers, and has been waging a fierce campaign against merchant shipping to fund his war with Markav. Apparently the battles on land have been favoring the sitting Pirate-King and his support amongst the smallfolk and landsmen, but the captains are with Komenos and wish to return to the old days when Jeledic raiders reaved along the coasts of the Middle Sea instead of merely levying a tariff on commerce as was the way of the old Pirate-King.

As your spy watches a captain approaches the driftwood throne, and reports that biremes from the patrol fleet have engaged and boarded a vessel of Peliton scudding east, and captured it. The courtiers seem dismayed by how the vessel of a naval rival could approach so close to Nem'Jeled itself, but Markav vows to build more ships which seems to allay some of their concerns.

The next few days are hectic for me, but I'll aim to get replies up by midweek - Thursday at the latest.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

G-Tech Corporation wrote:Is that all you're claiming for professionals? Because I would see the shield-bearers as such, and that's where your numbers got dodgy for me. Anyone in this RP should be able to mobilize thousands if not tens of thousands of levies for a campaign. Professional soldiers are the only numbers I'm actually concerned with.

I wouldn't call the Sparbara professionals. A professional force for me is a standing force and that the Sparbara is not. They are well trained but during peacetime they are demobilized in peacetime and return to civilian life.

Wikipedia (and thats the best I can do) describes them as "The Sparabara were taken from the full members of Persian society, they were trained from childhood to be soldiers and when not called out to fight on campaigns in distant lands they practised hunting on the vast plains of Persia. However, when all was quiet and the Pax Persica held true, the Sparabara returned to normal life farming the land and grazing their herds. Because of this they lacked true professional quality on the battlefield, yet they were well trained and courageous to the point of holding the line in most situations long enough for a counterattack."

So how do expansion work? Do you simply say you want a territory and then you get it?

Hmm, interesting description. I would call those a bit of a hybrid between a citizen soldier and a professional, though, being trained from birth and whatnot. As such, four thousand of them is a bit of a large semi-standing force, no?

Expansion can be RPed essentially however you like; most lands will be populated but likely unorganized in this time period, so fairly easy to simply occupy and conquer. I would like IC posts about expansion, but then the most important part is that you TG me exactly where you are expanding so I can amend the map and let you know any things of importance about your new holdings.

Less urgent question: how will tech advances be working? Will they be distributed like resources (i.e. by telegram privately), or will there be a tech advance round-up IC post?

A tech advance will be publicly announced, like the civil war in Nem'Jeled. It probably won't be as public knowledge ICly, but it may take some time for tech to actually progress- tech advancement will be relatively infrequent.

CODE: SELECT ALL
Civilization Application
Formal Name: Kingdom of Ebron
Form of Government: Despotic Monarchy
Location: Catalonia (Will have a map up shortly)
Brief History: Ebron was founded several hundred years ago by sea faring traders, likely from Greece or Phoenicia. Over several generations the merchants intermarried and settled amongst the local Celtiberians people. This over time generated a very unique culture, drawing aspects from both the local Celts as well as the Mediterranean settlers. The nation is largely agrarian but with a single sizeable port, the capital city of Brigos, which sits on the northern side of the river Abon (Ebro). This city acts as Ebron's gateway to the outside world and many agricultural products are shipped downstream to Brigos where there sold to merchants who operate throughout the Mediterranean. Religion in Ebron is largely based off of the old Celtic religions with some Mediterranean influences. The primary gods are Borvo (god of healing), Cariocecus (god of war), Sucellus (god of agriculture), Visugius (god of knowledge), Nabia (goddess of rivers and water) and Trebopala (goddess of protection). There are several hundred minor deities, designated to specific mountains, lakes, rivers and islands. Most of the shrines/temples are simple wooden structures or cairns, however in Brigos there are a number of stone temples based on Greek and Phoenician architecture. The current king, whose great-grandfather is considered the first king of Ebron, is the 34 year old Ludocus the Third.
Military Description: The standing military of Enron is 400 in size and fairly well equipped with double edged swords, throwing spears and bronze armor being the mainstay equipment of the military. The military is clan based but less so than in the past and steadfastly loyal to the king.
Naval Description: The navy is relatively small and only meant to defend Brigos and Ebron's shores from pirates and raiders. It consists of 10 trireme manned by marines and oar slaves.
Color for Map: Burgundy
